1. Gen7Pets Natural Step Dog Ramp

This ramp has an attribute that makes it special among others. That is its faux grass surface. The material is both aesthetically pleasing to the eye and super soft for your dog’s paws as it goes up and down the climb. It also provides a much more natural step, which will ensure that your dog gets that strong grip he needs for sure footing.

It is 72 inches long and holds up to 250 pounds, making it sturdy enough for all kinds of dogs without unnecessary wobble. For storage, it can be easily folded flat into two so that once you finish using it, you can make it smaller and store it at ease inside your car. It also locks into place, which is great as it won’t move from side to side be it during use or after when stored. The secret is in the strap that you attach between your vehicle and ramp. The tighter is placed, the stronger and safer the ramp is.

Specifications

  • Measurements:
    • When unfolded 72” L x 16” W x 1.5” thick
    • When folded 26” L x 16” W x 3” thick
Pros
  • Lightweight, only weighing 17 pounds
  • Holds up to 250 pounds
Cons
  • The strap’s pin is uncovered which can scratch your car
  • Too narrow for an older and larger dog

Sample Customer Review…I bought this for a lab that has hurt her back twice jumping out of my CRV and for a collie who has a longer body than she does tall -so it’s awkward for her to jump in and out at that height. It does take a little coaxing at first to get dogs up and down this ramp, but the ramp is steady – not wobbly, easy to open and shut, even semi one-handed as I am using the other hand to keep the dogs from prematurely jumping before I get the ramp set up, and the turf keeps the dogs from slipping. My husband was skeptical that the dogs would use it, and although I still do have to hold their collar to get them up and down, I feel like I am saving their backs.

2. PetSafe Extra Long Dog Ramp

An extremely light dog ramp, only weighing 18 pounds, perfect for any type of dog, and easy to carry around. It also folds until it becomes small enough which makes transportation and accommodation easier inside your vehicle. And do not let the weight of this ramp fool you as it can hold up to 300 pounds.

The secret is in its core, which is made of plastic aluminum. This ramp is extra strong, making it easier for your dog to climb up and down high vehicles. It also helps that it was made with a gentle incline, making it far easier than others to climb higher vehicles like trucks. What is best is that it has an extra level of safety with guard rails that are covered in paraffin wax, making it safe for both your car and your dog.

Specifications

  • Measurements
    • Normal: 47” L
    • Extended: 87” L
Pros
  • Guard rails for safety climbing coated in paraffin wax
  • Textured walking surface for extra traction
  • Can also be used for other animals, like goats
Cons
  • Even folded can be a little too long
  • The sandpaper texture can sometimes not provide enough grip

Sample Customer Review…Wow! this thing is great. Our dog is getting older now and is having problems getting in the Tundra. Bought this and it arrived in 2 days. We opened the box and there it was. No assembly. The ramp was light enough for my wife to carry. The finish was good quality and the ramp was very steady. Putting it in the truck was a breeze. There’s one snap on the back that locks the ramp closed. We opened the snap and the ramp extended smoothly and easily. It fits in the truck perfectly. We got the security strap for stability and that did add extra stability. Quite frankly, I don’t think it was necessary.

3. PetSTEP Original Folding Pet Ramp

This ramp is made to fit most cars, SUVs, and trucks, which makes it perfect for dog parents in need of a ramp fit for their ride. Holds up to 500 pounds which makes it virtually perfect for any type of canine, be it big or small. The two-piece contraption is easy to use and to put in place in the vehicle, which ensures a safe climb for your dog. Take no times to store, as it folds in a matter of seconds and that also helps with the installation.

Any owner can carry it with ease as it only weighs 18 pounds. This ramp is made only out of the best and most durable material, with high-quality plastic. The textured surface helps prevent skids or slips from your pet as it goes up and down the climb. Additionally, the surface is soft enough not to harm your pet’s paws. If that wasn’t enough, the plastic is known to be resistant to rust and corrosion, while also being extremely easy to clean.

The only bad thing to be said of this ramp is its bulkiness as it folds, since it’s made of sturdy and thick material it doesn’t contract to a small size. It also requires extra handling of the safety clasp as it’s made of plastic and can be broken if handled roughly.

Specifications

  • Measurement: 70” L x 17” W
  • Weighs only 18 pounds
Pros
  • Holds up to 500 pounds
  • Versatile; for all kinds of dogs and vehicles
  • Easy to mount and use
  • Extra safe with a rubberized surface
  • Fits most vehicles
  • Folds in two parts
  • Resistant to corrosion and rust
Cons
  • Bulky when folded
  • Heavier than other ramps
  • Safety clasp made of plastic

Sample Customer Review…I purchased this two months ago after having my second aluminum extending ramp fail on me in two years (see my review of that ramp). I rescue, adopt, and rehabilitate giant breed dogs, so this ramp gets a serious daily workout at my house. My dogs range in size from 100 pounds to 200 pounds. I am very pleased with this ramp so far. The surface is a unique rubber-like compound that is the easiest on a dog’s paws I have ever seen, while still providing excellent traction. The ramp itself, as well as the hinges, are extremely sturdy, well and thoughtfully designed, and well built. The ramp folds and unfolds easily and safely. The ramp is about average weight for a ramp this size, and no easier or more difficult to use than any other comparable ramp, though I find this folding ramp easier to use than the extending aluminum ramps I have had in the past. This ramp cleans easily, as well. The ramp is wide enough for my giant breeds, though I wouldn’t want it any narrower, and would appreciate it if it were an inch or two wider. Still, I haven’t had any dogs slip off of this ramp, even those dogs with arthritis. In my 23 years of experience with dog ramps, I definitely recommend this ramp over any other.

4. PetSafe Solvit Deluxe Telescoping Pet Ramp

This dog ramp supports dogs that weigh up to 400 pounds while being dependable and sturdy. The high traction surface along with side rails allows your dog to comfortably climb up and down without slipping. The ramp is made of reliable aluminum materials equipped with a wider and longer stride that is a necessity for large breeds.

The telescoping feature allows you to adjust the length of the ramp to your custom car size while also providing you the easy option of folding the ramp-up for storage. This ramp includes a safety latch that makes it even more secure and safe to use.

Specifications

  • Measurements: 39-72 inches L X 17 inch W X 4 inch H
Pros
  • Holds up to 400 pounds
  • Wider and longer than most other ramps on the market
  • Easy storage
  • Includes safety latch
  • Has non-slip tracking
Cons
  • The non-slip grip can be rough for some dogs’ paws

Sample Customer Review…Perfect for my 120lb German Shepherd. His joints get sore after running all day and jumping up in the back seat of my truck is a little rough on him at times. The grip feels like sandpaper but I’m sure it will be effective even when wet. The rubber feet make it very stable even with sick and heavy dogs going up and down. It is also very stable using lengths in between the max and minimum length. It’s nice not having a fixed length because of the different areas it will be used to get him in and out. My dog goes to work with me every day so he’s in and out of the truck a bunch and this ramp is perfect for daily use as it is quick and easy to set up. The ramp is very sturdy so I don’t worry about throwing it in the bed of the truck.

5. Maxpama Premium Nonslip Steps

The Maxpama Premium Non-slip steps are proven easier for dogs to climb up and down versus the typical ramp. No training is necessary for this new tool. The stairs are collapsable for easy storage and fold up smaller than the typical dog ramp as well. They fold out to be 30 to 40 inches tall which is plenty high for most vehicles. They are made of strong metal for durability and sturdiness. The stairs are made of well made strong fabric that doubles as a non-slip surface. These stairs are perfect for all weather conditions. These steps also include foam handles for easy gripping and a safety tether strap.

Specifications

  • 19 x 16.5 x 6 inches
  • 12.35 Pounds
Pros
  • Holds up to 150 pounds
  • Can be used indoors and outdoors.
  • Helps your dog climb up places other than the car
  • No assembly needed
  • Slip-resistant
  • Can be used for cats and other small animals too
  • Extremely lightweight
Cons
  • May be harder to fold up than the typical dog ramp

Customer Sample Review…This pet staircase has been a game-changer. Trying to get our 80 & 130lb dogs up and down from the back of a pickup has been challenging. They would get their front paws up on the tailgate and we would have to lift them the rest of the way. Them jumping down is also very hard on their bodies and something we didn’t want them to keep straining themselves on. This tailgate ladder is easy for them to use. It’s light and folds up VERY easily. It is a little harder to expand all the way out because of the full stair length, but not difficult by any means. My arms just don’t reach all the way so it takes a couple of extension attempts. The cloth-type step material holds up firmly under their weight. Nails don’t appear to be a risk to it. It does have a latch to secure it but we haven’t found a good anchor point to do that. We hold the securing arms in place on the tailgate while they use it so it doesn’t slip off. Those arms have a nice no-slip foam on them that makes it easy to do so. I think this ladder will hold up very well over time and am thankful to have such a light, slim, and easy option for our pups!

6. Pet Gear Tri-Fold Ramp

This ramp is one of a kind in its own category among the Pet Gear ramps. Its 71 inches of reach make it perfect for your dog to have plenty of space to walk from Point A to Point B. It also helps that it is extra wide, meaning it accommodates all kinds of dogs of all sizes. The spacious ramps make it perfect for skittish or jumpy dogs who need more space and time in order to make the trip.

It is also amazingly sturdy, holding up to 200 pounds of weight with ease. Its patented safety tether replaces the legs and makes it one of the safest designs to exist, making it sturdy and strong enough for you to let your dog walk in or out without assistance from your part.

It has a foldable design, folding in three pieces made of strong joints, making it durable and easy to store and move around. The surface of the ramp prevents your dog from slipping, as it’s made of textured material. Even so, some owners have mentioned having trouble with it due to their dogs not getting enough needed grip. Another thing to keep in mind is the durability of the security strap, so it is best to keep an eye on any changes as time progresses.

Specifications

  • Measurements: 71” L
  • The wide ramp makes it easy for all types of dogs
Pros
  • Weight limit: 200 pounds
  • Good for virtually all kinds of breeds
Cons
  • Textured grip does not provide strong footing to heavier dogs
  • The strap can give with time

Sample Customer Review…We are pleased our two German Shepherds are using this ramp easily and willingly – they act like it’s a new toy and happily run up it into our RV. There was no training involved and they had never used a ramp before; I think they were comfortable with it because of the width being ample. We found a rubber mat in Walmart for $2.77 each that fits each one of the 3 sections of the ramp perfectly! It doesn’t even need to be attached to the ramp, it stays in place but gives the dogs more traction. We did this after reading the reviews about not enough traction for some dogs. It folds up easily, has a small latch to hold two of the sections together and a handle to pick it up which keeps it all together. As a female I can pick this up, unfold and fold, and maneuver this ramp. The ramp stays in place when in use and doesn’t have any tendency to kick out or move when they run up and down it, both are on it at the same time which means a total of 140 pounds. My husband has walked up and down it and he is about 175 pounds and has no problems. We’re thrilled this is working out so well for our pups.

7. PetSafe Happy Ride Folding Pet Ramp

This ramp is made of plastic and can easily reach up to 24 inches high and support 150 pounds of weight. It comes with four rubber feet, which provides sturdiness and safety as the dog goes up and down the climb. The sandpaper surface makes it perfect for your dog because it provides enough strong footing to prevent any slipping off in the middle of the climb.

While it has this feature, there have been some comments between users about it being not enough traction or not being sturdy enough. Overall, it is a great ramp and its ability to reach up to 24 inches high makes it attractive to any dog owner in need of a ramp for a high car. It is also easy to store as it folds in half.

Specifications

  • Measurements: 62” L x 16” W x 4” H
  • Weighs only 10 pounds
  • It comes with a warranty
Pros
  • Holds up to 150 pounds
  • Reaches 24” of altitude
  • Folds in half
  • Easy to clean
  • Lightweight
Cons
  • Not enough traction

Sample Customer Review…I did a lot of research into purchasing a dog ramp after we bought a new small SUV (VW Tiguan) that was too high off the ground for our 104lb., 10-year-old mixed breed. I know a lot of dog people with different brands of ramps, but nothing compares to this folding ramp by Solvit. First, it only weighs 10 lbs.! I’m only 5′ tall and entering senior years myself, so I didn’t want anything too big and heavy. It’s the perfect size to fit in the cargo area when our dog comes out or it easily goes behind one of the front seats when he’s in the back. It’s simple to use, simple to store, very sturdy and the surface is slip-proof – even with a dog who walks half sideways. I taught an old dog a new trick in about two attempts with a cookie upon landing and now he trots up with a wag and walks down like a gentleman. If you’re looking for a dog ramp for any size dog, this is a great choice.

8. Pet Gear Travel Lite Bi-Fold Ramp

This ramp is perfect for medium and small-sized dogs, although it also comes into mind to think of how skittish your dog is on narrow surfaces. The SupertraX material of the surface makes it a protective and soft layer perfect for paws as it doesn’t injure them.

It also provides sure footing. The best thing is that the surface is also removable, making it easier to clean and maintain. The ramp folds, making it perfect for storage as it fits virtually anywhere. The rubber grippers at the bottom of the ramp make it so that it won’t move or bulk with weight. The ramp can reach up to 20 inches in height which makes it suitable for SUVs.

Specification

  • Measurements: 42” L x 16” W x 4” wide
  • Reaches up to 20” of height
Pros
  • Holds up to 200 pounds
  • Comes with a handle for easy storage
  • SupertraX surface gives it a sure grip
Cons
  • Models can vary and can all depend on which car you have
  • No wide enough for skittish canines

Sample Customer Review…This ramp has dimensions (length and width) that strike a perfect balance between being ideal for your dog while not being cumbersome. Also, it is extremely solid, safe, and heavy-duty for sure with a clever recessed handle molded in on the right upper side. The supertrax surface is superior, meaning non-slip and durable. The ramp truly checks off every box. in fact, the velcro keeping the removable walking surface secure is continuous and screwed into the frame, and stitched nicely on the underside of the walking surface. That’s as good as it gets. Every detail screams of quality. Here’s the best part! I noticed 2 holes up top where the ramp rest is located. I wanted to eliminate any fear of this ramp slipping. I used 2 one inch L brackets, 2 screws, 2 washers, and 2 wing nuts. Tokes under a minute with no drilling, and no tools, putting the washer on top and wing nut on the underside. Nothing sticking up or out to hurt my dog. Now I can hook this on the side rail of my bed knowing the ramp will never slip off the rail while cutting the jumping distance in half! So while I got this ramp for the backseat entrance to my Kia Sorento, I now can use it bedside as well. My dog is a 10 yr old 75 lb. female Labradoodle that shy’s away from stairs since my home is a rancher. I’m so delighted with the ridiculously cheap and easy modification I made to make this possible, that I felt it was a good thing to share with those reading the reviews. This ramp is the one to get and worth every penny of the modest cost to keep your dog injury-free while doing the things that have become difficult.

9. Pet Gear Full-Length Ramp

This is one of the greatest there is in the market because of its folding nature. It can either extend to two pieces or three, depending on how much you unfold it. The slip-resistant material of the surface provides the dog a stronger grip as it goes up and down the ramp, making the climb and landing easier.

The rubberized bottom makes it so that it won’t slip as the dog stands in it or moves up and down. You don’t have to attach it to any place in the car and it’s so big and sturdy that you won’t have a problem with your big dog or your even bigger car.

This ramp is designed with pet parents in mind, making it easy to carry and move around. It also is easy to wash, as the matt surface is made of washable material.

Specifications

  • Folds up to three times
  • Comes in three colors: chocolate, black and blue, and black and yellow
Pros
  • Holds up to 200 pounds
  • Perfect for big dogs
  • Easy to handle
Cons
  • Sandpaper surface similarity can hurt your dog’s paw, depending on the canine
  • Weight limits are debatable depending on the dog

Sample Customer Review…My old ramp would not fit into the new car so I started looking for something easier to manage that took up less space and was usable for my critter. I narrowed down the choices to the tri-fold one with carpet and the other without. The one with the sandy surface was similar to the older ramp. None of my dogs had a problem with the sandy traction surface so I got it. I really like how small the tri-fold packed up and how easy it was to fold/unfold. It fits well in the Jeep and although it has a steeper slope when set up than my old extra long one, it works great. Although my dog had never used a ramp, a string cheese stick and the desire to “go for a ride” got her up and down the ramp in two tries. She could jump into the Jeep but jumping out was getting to be a challenge and like my dog (getting old), I was also finding it a challenge to lift her down out of the Jeep. She seems to really enjoy the ramp and I know the stress of in and out of the Jeep is greatly reduced for both of us. The surface of the ramp is getting scratched by her toenails from her first tries using the ramp but now she knows the routine there has been no further significant wear. It is a lightweight ramp but seems to be very sturdy in use.

10. Rage Motorsports Folding Pet Ramp

This is a 32-pound ramp that holds up to 250 pounds of weight, making it reliable for any type of dog. It is 18 inches wide, giving enough space for your dog to move freely up and down the climb. Perfect for trucks, vans, and any SUVs. The ramp extends up to 96 inches, making it one of the largest here in our list of products.

The surface is covered with a grip tape surface that makes it easier for your dog not to slip and protects its paws as it goes through the climb. When not in use, it folds easily in half making it easy to store and transport from one point to the other. A bonus is that it comes with a carrying handle.

Specifications

  • Measurements: 96” L x 18.75” H
Pros
  • Holds up to 250 pounds
  • The surface over 18” wide
  • Folds in half and comes with a handle for carriage
Cons
  • Screws require tightening upon receiving it at first
  • Weighs 32 pounds, making it on the heavier side

Sample Customer Review…This ramp is the answer to my prayer! We have an awesome dog with equally awesome medical issues. Due to her weight (50#) and the fact that she can’t jump or be comfortably lifted, she missed out on all of the “rides” on our Mule and inside our pickup. With this ramp, the slope is gentle, the footing is non-slip, the construction is strong, it’s wide and lightweight. Who could ask for more?! Definitely a great purchase.

Sample Customer Review…We are very pleased with this ramp. Our two large dogs go right up until it without hesitation. We also plan on using it to load the dogs onto our pontoon boat. Very sturdy construction, lightweight, and after trying out two other ramps we were sold on this one!

Buying Guide: Things to Consider Before Buying the Best Dog Ramps For Cars and SUV’s

Benefits of Dog Ramps

Some breeds are more prone to health issues such as arthritis and musculoskeletal pain. Taken into consideration that fact, a ramp can help reduce the stress of the joints and ease the pain of the climb and jumps that are required to go up and down the vehicle.

It also prevents injuries, and this counts for healthy dogs too. Going up and down a car without a structure to support the jump can leave your dog’s paws and joints damaged in the long run. For senior dogs, it can be a hassle to move as agile as they did before which makes a ramp perfect for these situations.

Finally, be it small or big, old or quite young, a ramp helps with mobility from one place to another. With this little gadget, your furry friend can accompany you anywhere.

Types of Dog Ramps

Ramps come in different types and they all vary. Fixed ramps are those that only come in one piece and won’t fold. This does not make them easy to store, therefore not a great solution for cars or SUVs. These types of ramps are perfect for houses as there, they aren’t required to fold and be put in storage.

Foldable ramps are, on the other hand, great for storage and mobility. You can save space with them, be it in your house or vehicle. They are mostly easy to transport and great for taking them on rides as they fit in back seats or trunks. Finally, we have telescopic ramps. Like foldable ones, these retract instead and are also easy to store and transport from one point to another. These are mostly made of panels and are very easy to use. The only thing you need to do is detach the safety lock and slide down the panels to give it a go.

Important Features

You need to consider some of the features these ramps come with. Size and shape are one. It all depends on your dog’s size, weight, and level of energy. Not every economic and small ramp will help your dog if he is on the smaller side but highly jumpy.

Small ramps can be tricky if your dog is energetic and moves a lot. It can cause him to fall and then be scared for the rest of his life on ramps. The weight limit is another implication you should take into consideration. If your dog is heavier than what the ramp says it holds up, don’t go for that one. Trust the weight limits. It will make your purchase smartly and possibly help you acquire a durable product.

The material of what it’s made of also plays a key role in the decision. Plastic can be durable, but it can also be troublesome under a lot of weight. However, because they are so lightweight, they are perfect to transport virtually anywhere. Metal and wood are the other two materials with which they are commonly made, so take into consideration how much you would need to move it around.

Conclusion

Ramps come in all shapes and forms, with many things to consider from portability to durability, among other things. But so, do our dogs. The best option is always the option that aligns your dog’s specific needs. This list provides you with products that come for all kinds of canine and their needs. The key here lies in that they are perfect for cars and SUVs so in the end, whether you choose one or the other, you will be making a smart choice of the ramp.

FAQs

Which dogs benefit from dog ramps?

The range of canines that benefit from a dog ramp varies a lot. It can even be said almost all of them. But to be more specific we can consider senior dogs and short-legged dogs, like dachshunds for example, or those that may have mobility issues based on health-related issues, like arthritis

Collapsable or adjustable stairs vs. dog ramps; which one is better?

It all depends on the dog. Some, with longer strides and wider steps, have it better using stairs since they are almost the same height as their pace. Others, on the shorter side or with muscle ailments can prefer a gentle slope, something which a ramp provides.

How to know if this is the ramp for your dog?

Two key factors will help you know and take this decision, the weight of your dog and the width and height of your car’s doors. Your dog will need a ramp sturdy enough to hold its weight but won’t also put unnecessary pressure on your vehicle. This could end up scratching or denting it in the long run. The right ramp is also the one that can be easily stored and assembled.
