Having already used it earlier this week; I can say that the new Mantis with the Honda engine is a match made in heaven. There’s more than enough torque/ power to handle any job that you’d attempt with this sized tiller. Plus, this engine starts, runs, and idles much easier than the 2 cycle Viper. Other improvements include much more substantial/ ergonomic grip handles, better accessible: choke lever, throttle and shut-off control, and a very solid/ handy kick-stand that wasn’t part of the old Mantis. Originally I had the Honda tiller 23cc and I thought that it was good but would quickly big down and the handle was uncomfortable so I went searching again and found the Mantis. Not too small and not too big where I can get into the right spaces. 2 cycles in my opinion is more powerful than 4 strokes. Very easy to make it till or cultivate. I just tilled approximately 2,500 square feet of space in our backyard for planting a new lawn last weekend and this machine was just killing it. You will want to carry a utility knife with you if you plan on tilling over vines/yard protection mesh. We purchased a fixer-upper house that had nothing but a giant mud pit in the backyard. While tilling, I ran into the dreaded yard protection mesh that they apparently covered the entire thing with, as well as leftover vine roots from a large patch that we cut and poisoned — large enough that it climbed up and almost strangled two 40ft+ pine trees to death. This little tiller cruised through the mesh and the vines without a hitch, as in I never stumbled or tripped because it got clogged. All I had to do was stop tilling if I felt like it was running a little slow, take my utility knife and cut any vines/mesh wrapped up in the blades, yank them out, then get back to it — which is as easy as just pressing the safety and pulling the trigger. Very handy device and by far on my top list of tool purchases for our big fixer-upper house.

Well, that didn’t work out because it never died. I tilled up about 10,000 sqft of the yard in preparation for sod installation. The ground was everything from hard-packed, dry clay with tons of rocks to very wet clay. This thing just bounced off all the rocks with almost no issue. In the wet clay, I would have to remove the clay that got stuck in it, but it would just keep going regardless. It just kept plowing through everything without a hiccup and I was done with the yard in no time at all. Definitely a better value than renting a large one, highly recommended.

Two pulls and the motor started right up. Took the choke off and it kept running. Throttled down and all was good. Let the motor run slow then fast then slow then fast for break-in. Motor never skipped a beat. Hope it continues to work well as I plan to use it in the woods to make small food plots. I will write another review this fall when I have some time on the tiller.

I put in a new garden this year, about 15×15, and I tilled it to about 18 inches deep. Even with clay soil in spots and puling out rocks and clods of grass then mixing in soil amendments, I was done in 1.5 hours. The tiller never jammed although I did clear it twice to keep it working efficiently. I wouldn’t have believed it was possible, but I’m convinced now. I’m done with gas tillers for good. This is actually the second Sun Joe product I’ve purchased and really liked. I’ll be watching this company for future releases. Their engineering and quality are impressive. I religiously read user reviews before I buy something and it appears all of the objections most people had with this tiller were addressed by the manufacturer. First of all, it was very easy to assemble and there were no parts missing. Yes, the clutch lever should be on the bottom, not the top but that was an easy fix. I had originally opted for the larger horsepower Kohler model but it appeared it would not be available for a long period of time. I settled for the 99cc Viper engine and find it has plenty of power. It chewed through my compacted Colorado clay garden soil with little effort. it is also balanced very well so when it hit a hard spot and started to buck a little I found that if you push down on the handlebars it stops and continues to chew through. Also if you lift up on the handlebars slightly in softer soil it will pull itself through. I have raised beds and it was very easy to maneuver at the ends. Overall, it did a great job and was a dream to use. I normally rent a 16hp rear tine tiller but I put in raised beds this year so that large unit was not going to work. I wanted to purchase something that would do the job but easy to operate and affordable. This was money well spent and I recommend it highly.
