1. Don Pablo, Pablo’s Pride Guatemala

Pablo’s Pride Guatemala is a smooth and sweet coffee that offers deep flavors that will make your morning all the brighter! This coffee provides a clean finish that leaves even the pickiest coffee drinker satisfied, and the notes of caramel and cocoa in every sip will most definitely have you coming back for a second cup! Pablo’s Pride carefully caramelizes its beans with natural sugars, giving it the sweet and alluring taste that makes this coffee so addicting, and the aftertaste is almost as addicting as the caffeine itself!

This coffee is also less acidic than many other coffee beans, which some find deprives it of the usual coffee kick, but if you are looking for a less acidic taste, then this might just be the perfect coffee for you. While the flavor profile for this coffee might not be as complex as some other Guatemalan brews, it is nevertheless appealing, delicious, and has received glowing reviews from fellow coffee lovers.

Sample customer review…We have tried a lot of coffee brands. Really expensive brands, but they were too weak or too strong, acidic, and gave us heartburn, and most just didn’t meet our expectations. We tried this coffee and it is just perfect for us. It is full-bodied, smooth, and doesn’t give us heartburn. It is fresh and what a great bargain!

2. Fresh Roasted Coffee LLC, Guatemala Huehuetenango Coffee

One of the many dark roast coffees on this list, Fresh Roasted Coffee LLC has provided a Guatemalan Huehuetenango Coffee with such a powerful flavor profile. It is sure to knock the competitors out of the running! This rich brew contains subtle notes of spice as well as the flavors of sweet, sweet chocolate.

Fresh Roasted Coffee LLC Guatemala Huehuetenango Coffee is a full-bodied, and dangerously sweet coffee, one that might think it is better suited for dessert, and it has minimal acidity in comparison to other brews. The coffee’s aroma breathes both wood and spice, a warm and pleasant flavor/aroma combination that is perfect for a chilly morning.

Specifications

  • Brand: Fresh Roasted Coffee LLC
  • Item Form: Whole Bean
  • Roast Level: Medium Roast
  • Flavor: Guatemalan Huehuetenango
  • Caffeine Content: Caffeinated
Pros
  • Minimal Acidity
  • Aromatic
Cons
  • Some reports of damaged packaging

Sample customer review…We were looking for really good coffee because the one we have been buying keeps getting more expensive and now no more free shipping. Did not think we could find anything we liked as much but when we came across the rave reviews for this Chiapas we decided to give it a try. Boy am I glad we did as we have found a coffee that can compete with our organic Yirgacheffe. This coffee is the perfect roast, smooth with great crema. We are very particular and have tried others but this is the first one we can honestly say we like as much. We can now highly recommend this coffee.

If you are an environmentally conscious individual, then you can rest easy before waking up to enjoy a delicious cup of Java Planet’s Guatemalan Organic Coffee! This coffee is both pesticide and chemical-free, it is eco-friendly, and the flavor alone offers a premium coffee experience.

Their beans are fair trade, organic, and are grown in a bird-friendly manner, so not only do you not have to worry about the use of harmful chemicals in the coffee’s growing and production process, you know that no birds were harmed in any of these processes either! These Guatemalan organic coffee beans are sweeter than some other brews due to their decreased acidity, so like Pablo’s Pride, it might be perfect for those with sensitive stomachs.

Specifications

  • Brand: Java Planet Organic Coffee Roasters
  • Item Form: Whole Bean
  • Roast Level: Medium Roast
  • Flavor: Chocolate, Caramel
  • Caffeine Content: Caffeinated
Pros
  • Fair-trade
  • Bird-friendly
  • Chemical-free
Cons
  • Could be too sweet for some

Sample customer review…First off, I have to mention that I am not a coffee connoisseur by any means. I’m used to drinking plain old maxwell house, and I was just kind of winging it when picking out an organic alternative. This was the first organic coffee I found that gave what sounded to me like a pleasant description of the flavor, so I decided to give it a go. I just received it today, and it is pretty fresh. It was roasted just short of two months ago, and it doesn’t expire for seven months. I coarsely ground the beans and brewed for four minutes in a French press, using a little over two tablespoons per cup, and it came out perfect. Not too weak, not too strong. It is much smoother and cleaner tasting than my usual brand, and there is no bitterness whatsoever. It is really great coffee that I will most definitely order again.

4. Volcanica, Guatemala Antigua Coffee

Antigua is one of the most well-known regions in Guatemala for growing coffee, and that is not without reason. It is from this prominent and prized region that Volcanica produces its Antigua Coffee, a brew that justifies the region’s reputation with each sip.

This smooth medium-roast is roasted to order, which ensures a level of freshness and fierce potency to the coffee’s alluring aroma, one that is sure to catch you by pleasant surprise! Volcanica’s Antigua Coffee beans are incredibly lively, amazingly flavorful, though not necessarily as sweet as some of the other options on this list.

Specifications

  • Brand: Volcanica Coffee
  • Item Form: Whole Bean
  • Roast Level: Medium Roast
  • Flavor: Guatemala Antigua
  • Caffeine Content: Caffeinated
Pros
  • Grown from volcanic ash
  • Decaf option available
Cons
  • Not very sweet

Sample customer review…We purchased this coffee in early December 2018. It had been roasted within 30 days of purchase, the date printed on the package as well as a “use by” date. We opened the bag and the fresh aroma of the beans surrounded our nostrils as we happily inhaled it. We ground up the beans and savored our first cups of coffee. Hands down this are the freshest roast coffee we have enjoyed in a long time. It has a great flavor, decent caffeine kick, and not acidic or bitter. I will buy this coffee again!

5. Two Volcanoes Guatemala

Unlike many of the coffees on this list, this next entry is actually a blend! This is a dark roast blend that is not just full of flavor, including subtle notes of chocolate and caramel, but it is perfect for your everyday espresso lover.

Two Volcanoes take a risk with crafting their blends in bulk, especially with the concern of quality control, and the ratios being very easy to get wrong, but this is a risk that more than pays off in the end! What is produced is an extremely impactful coffee blend that manages to highlight all of the rich and flavorful aspects of Guatemalan coffee as a whole.

Specifications

  • Brand: Two Volcanoes Coffee
  • Item Form: Whole Bean
  • Roast Level: Dark Roast
  • Flavor: Dark Roast Espresso Blend
  • Caffeine Content: Caffeinated
Pros
  • Pleasant dark roast
Cons
  • Ground version goes bad quicker than whole bean

Sample customer review…Arrived at time stated. Simple packaging. When I opened the bag I was immediately gratified at the appearance of the beautiful beans. I use a Chemex brewer with a double-walled stainless steel mesh filter and heat the water to 180˚ The flavor is strong, slightly bright, with an underlying sweetness, and finishes with a cherry-dark-chocolate flavor that lingers for hours. MMM! I drink it black. I have tasted coffee from all over the world. This, to me, is in the top five in flavor and aroma.

6. Volcanica, Guatemala Peaberry

Peaberry beans are considered a finer quality than other coffee crops, and no one proves that better than Volcanica with their Guatemalan Peaberry Coffee. This coffee is bold and smooth, with a sweet acidic twinge and a lingering hint of spice. This coffee is extremely aromatic, and versatile to boot, pairing well with a cold brew as well as your average hot cup of coffee. Whichever way you decide to drink your coffee, Volcanica’s Guatemala Peaberry is an excellent choice for a Guatemalan brew.

  • Brand: Volcanica Coffee

  • Roast Level: Medium Roast
  • Flavor: Guatemala Peaberry
  • Caffeine Content: Caffeinated

The bag delivered is always within two weeks of roasting. I use a 3 to 1 water to coffee ratio. 300 grams of water to 30 grams of coffee.

What You Need to Know About Guatemalan Coffee:

Which Roast Is For You?

Your coffee experience hinges surprisingly on the roast you choose to go with. If you are interested in a more dynamic, and flavorful brew, then a lighter roast will help bring out the complexity of your coffee’s notes. For example, in most Guatemalan brews, there will be hints of some fruits and spices, as well as notes of a rather nutty chocolate and caramel (which you may have noticed being a common thread in some of our listed products).

Dark roasts really help to highlight the chocolate flavor in most Guatemalan coffees, and while the other flavors will still be there, the chocolate will be dominant and the most notable. If you desire a complex cup of coffee that makes you feel like a sommelier with each sip, a lighter roast is for you, but if all you crave is a good cup of coffee with a simple, yet strong, flavor, then dark roast is your brew.

Blend or Single-Origin?

Another aspect of your coffee that is very subject to your own preference, is your choice between a blend, or a single-origin coffee. Single origin coffee contains only the beans from a single producer, region, or crop, and will house some truly unique flavors. Coffee blends, however, take beans from all around the world and combine them to craft one smooth, balanced flavor. Though, if you are looking to truly experience Guatemalan coffee, you can do so with either, just be sure to make sure the blend you choose uses only Guatemalan beans.

Guatemala’s Coffee Growing Regions

Atitlan

Heavily influenced by its proximity to the Pacific Ocean, Atitlan receives heavy amounts of rainfall and kies in a region populated by several volcanic mountains. Atitlan is renowned for its eco-friendly farming methods and production, resulting in full-bodied beans, naturally fertilized, that have a unique floral acidity, with a hint of spice.

San Marcos

Like Atitlan, San Marcos also receives a heavy amount of rainfall and is home to several high-altitude volcanoes. The added heat and humidity create the perfect incubator for some delicious coffee beans, which are distinctly floral, yet acidic in both flavor and aroma.

Nuevo Oriente

Along the border of Honduras, Nuevo Oriente sits as one of the oldest regions for coffee-growing. This land rests on a former volcanic range, and over the long decades, coffee-growers in the region have raised and cultivated unique and premium coffee beans that are notorious for their powerful aroma, high acidity, and hearty and well-rounded flavors.

Fraijanes Plateau

Unlike many of the other regions on this list, the Fraijanes Plateau does not have volcanic soil, but rather receives a dusting of ash from the nearby volcano Pacaya. The land is dry and hot, with ample amounts of sunshine, perfect for the growth of full-bodied beans with complex flavors and a simple, yet sweet aroma.

Rainforest Coban

This Subtropical forest, unlike many of the other listed locations, receives steady rainfall over the course of most of the year. The beans in the Rainforest Coban are grown in mostly limestone soil or clay, out of direct sunlight with a cool, rainy climate, which all culminates into a bean that is less acidic, medium-bodied, and bright!

Highland Huehuetenango

One of the driest and most elevated, and remote locations in the coffee-growing regions of Guatemala, Highland Huehuetenango produces mildly acidic, specialty beans that are described as having a wine-like flavor profile. These beans are grown in a subtropical climate nestled right on the Mexican border.

Antigua

One of the most popular locations found in stores, Antigua coffee is grown in rich, volcanic soil, in a region of low humidity that helps craft the rich flavors that Guatemalan beans are known for. These beans are well-known for their chocolatey flavor, and their apple-like acidity.

Conclusion

Guatemalan coffee has reached such esteem not just because of its rich flavors, and alluring aromas, but simply because it is dependably good! At least in our opinion, the best Guatemalan coffee is easily Pablo’s Pride, with its simple, yet exquisite taste, its subtle richness, and its high regard in the coffee community. This, however, does not guarantee that Pablo’s Pride is the coffee for you, and if you are still in doubt, feel free to look at the other coffees on our list, and you will undoubtedly fall in love with one of these many amazing Guatemalan brews!
