Sample Customer Review…My Lenovo Thinkpad – that I purchased last May – died and I needed to buy a quick replacement before a research trip. I did a little research on the “best laptops” and this one came up at the top or near the top of almost every tech site’s listing. AND I CAN SEE WHY. I am loving this little gem. It’s quick, beautiful, light, and has everything you need for non-gaming purposes. It’s a 13″ laptop and I have small hands – so I don’t mind the keyboard or the screen size. They have a 14″ and the X-Pro if you need more power or more screen and more keyboard. But other than that, this may be the perfect laptop for travel. The battery life is reasonable and it has a C-type charger so I only need ONE charger for everything when I’m on the go (which is so much easier). The screen quality is awesome and I prefer touch screens, so I’m happy here as well. The mouse pad is huge for those that don’t love the touch screen while working.

For the money, this is – so far – the best little laptop I’ve ever had. I like it far, far better than anything else I’ve had in the last 10 years. If you’re on the fence, let me push you a little. Get this laptop.

2. Apple MacBook Pro 16

Apple is one of the most well-known technology companies around the world. Apply released the Apple MacBook Pro 16 in 2019. Compared to past Macbooks, there is clearly an improvement. Moreover, this is the first Apple laptop that has a screen size of 16 inches. There are two choices of color: silver and space gray and it still has a similar appearance as all the other MacBooks. The MacBook Pro has 3072 * 1920 native resolution (226 PPI). The height of the MacBook Pro is 1.62 cm, the width of it is 39.79 cm, and the depth is 24.59 cm. MacBook weights 2.0 kg.

The processor is either 2.6GHz 6‑core Intel Core i7 or 2.3GHz 8‑core Intel Core i9. The storage of the MacBook Pro is either 512 GB SSD or 1 TB SSD, which can be configurable up to 8 TB SSD. The memory of the MacBook is 16GB of 2666MHz DDR4 onboard memory and this can also be configurable up to 64 GB. The operating system is macOS. MacBook Pro 16 has four USB-C ports for charging, DisplayPort, Thunderbolt, and USB 3.1 Gen 2. Its battery life lasts up to 11 hours. Based on the app you will use and what you do with it, the battery usually lasts around 9 hours.

You will need to consider the size of the laptop when you decide to buy it. Since its screen size is 16 inches and it is not light to carry it around. However, it allows you to have more room on the screen and it’s good for multitasking due to the 16 inches screen. Its memory and storage are both configurable so you are able to add more when you need it in the future. Apple uses a redesigned thermal system and this helps to cool down the laptop faster.

Heating is one of the biggest problems for a good performance so having the redesigned thermal system allows the MacBook to have better performance and lasts longer. One of the most impressive parts of the MacBook Pro is the speaker, in which there is a “high‑fidelity six‑speaker system with force-canceling woofers” (Apple.com). This provides a clear and comfortable sound. However, compared to a lot of laptops, MacBook Pro 16 is more expensive.

Specifications

  • CPU: 2.6GHz 6‑core Intel Core i7 / 2.3GHz 8‑core Intel Core i9
  • Operation System: macOS
  • Storage: 512 GB SSD / 1 TB SSD
  • RAM: 16GB of 2666MHz DDR4
  • Dimensions: 39.79 cm X 24.59 cm X 1.62 cm
  • Weight: 2.0 g
Pros
  • Retina display
  • Comfortable touchpad
  • Great battery life
  • Good Audio Quality
  • SSD storage options up to 8 gigabytes
Cons
  • No USB-A
  • Expensive
  • No microSD slot

Sample Customer Review…Like most people, I was tempted to wait for the new MacBook Pro 16″ with the new M1 chip coming out this year, but the more research I did, the more I realized that if you need to run Windows (work, etc.), it makes a lot of sense to buy this model. New M1-based Macs simply cannot run Windows at this time (1Q2020). Even if/when Parallels or VMWare does come out with an emulation software layer, its performance will be questionable due to the latency introduced by performing low-level instruction translation between M1 & Intel chips. On the other hand, with this current model, Windows runs natively on Intel chips giving you the option to run it on a thin virtualization layer in Mac OS (VMWare/Parallels/Wine, etc.), or at the bare metal level using Boot Camp. For anyone that wants the ability to run high-performance MS WIndows now and in the future, this is the best choice for the long run.

3. Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 2

The processor of Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 2 is a 9th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-9850H Processor with vPro™. The screen size of the laptop is 15 inches and its weight is 1.7 kg. The height of the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 2 is 361.8mm, the width of it is 245.7mm, and the depth is 18.4mm. Its resolution can be up to 3840 x 2160. The operating system is Windows 10 pro. The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 2 has a memory of up to 32 GB DDR4 2666 MHz and its storage can be up to 1 TB PCIe SSD. There are up to 10 ports/slots, including 2 USB 3.1 Gen 1, 2 intel thunderbolt 3, and so on. Its battery life is around 5 hours and 36 minutes.

When you decide to buy this laptop, you will need to consider it has a short battery life so you will most likely bring the charger when you go out. There is a really big issue of Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 2 is the heating issue. It takes a long time to cool down the laptop, which is bad for performance. In addition, Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 2 is pretty pricey.

One of the impressive parts of Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 2 is its keyboard. The appropriate travel distance between the button and it is made from good material. It has a decent amount of memory and storage that allows you to work on your project fast. Moreover, it also has a 4K touch screen.

Specifications

  • CPU: 9th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-9850H Processor with vPro™
  • Operation System: Windows 10 pro
  • Storage: 1 TB PCIe SSD
  • RAM: 32 GB DDR4 2666 MHz

  • Well built
  • Thin and light
  • 64GB DDR4 Memory
Cons
  • Expensive
  • Speakers are average

Sample Customer Review…I’ve owned and used laptops from HP, DELL, ASUS, ACER, Toshiba…. In particular, I LOVED my Dell XPS 9370. It is light and BEAUTIFUL and provided a VERY good overall experience, both in hardware, design, customer service, warranty claims, and Dell’s own included support software. But I swear the minute I started using my new LENOVO X1, I instantly realized oh, this is a different league!. Design opinions aside (I still like my XPS look more), I am completely in love with how well this Lenovo X1 is built, the amazing performance, the GREAT support software (Lenovo Vantage). The keyboard is so satisfying! The screen is impeccable, even compared side-by-side to the 4KIPS on the Dell. With the availability of MANY USB ports (C and A-type) plus HDMI, other brands don’t come close to how well this laptop is put together. The word PROFESSIONAL is what comes to mind while using it. Other laptops feel like toys in retrospect. This Lenovo means serious business! Minor thing: it gathers fingerprints, very much, but a lot less than many other laptops I’ve had. I AM SO HAPPY with this purchase! I feel like never switching to another brand ever again. I plan to recommend Lenovo in general, and this laptop in particular, to everyone that asks me for advice.

4. Microsoft Surface Pro 7

The processor of Microsoft Surface Pro 7 is Quad-core 10th Gen Intel. The screen size of the Microsoft Surface Pro 7 is 12.3 inches with a resolution of 2736 x 1824 (267 PPI). Moreover, it’s a touch screen. The length of the Microsoft Surface Pro 7 is 292 mm, the width of it is 201 mm, and the depth is 8.5 mm. Its weight is 775 g when it’s i3 and i5 and 790 g when it’s i7. The memory of Microsoft Surface Pro 7 is LPDDR4x RAM and there are choices 4GB, 8GB, and 16GB. Moreover, the storage is a Solid-state drive (SSD) and there are choices: 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB. The battery life of the Microsoft Surface Pro 7 is around 10.5 hours. The operating system of Microsoft Surface Pro 7 is Windows 10.

Microsoft Surface Pro 7 finally includes USB-C but it still doesn’t have Thunderbolt 3 support. It has a really impressive battery time and it is really light so these allow you to carry out Thunderbolt 3 support easily. However, it doesn’t come with the stylus pen and keyboard so you will need to spend extra money to buy it. Its price is affordable.

Specifications

  • CPU: Quad-core 10th Gen Intel
  • Operation System: Windows 10
  • Storage: up to 1TB SSD
  • RAM: 4GB / 8GB / 16GB
  • Dimensions: 292 mm X 201 mm X 8.5 mm
  • Weight: 775 g (i3 / i7) or 790(i7)
Pros
  • Snappy processor
  • Long lasting battery
  • USB-C included
  • Sharp display
  • Kickstand
Cons
  • Keyboard is sold seperately
  • Only 2 ports
  • No thunderbolt support

Sample Customer Review…It’s the perfect combo of an on-the-fly tablet, to a fully functional computer. I study languages for personal interest, but I do audio production, recording, DJ gigs (on rare occasions as I get older), and also work on tech hardware and software. The surface can handle my DAW software with midi input, can do all my editing, provides me the access to code, and make quick notes on lines of code to review. Not to mention its capacity to run WLS2 Linux operations through a command-line interface, or run virtual machines, remote access to help fix something for someone. It’s rare to find a task the Surface Pro 7 can’t stand up to.

  • Poor audio quality

Sample Customer Review…I love this Chromebook, first the build quality and feel and touch are fantastic and one of the best keyboards I have experienced! This replaced a previous Chromebook, a different brand, and is great to use, though some of the android apps are still phone-sized, though I know they were working on the adaptation. There are a lot of great Chrome OS apps and the number is growing, but for everyday use or thin client as someone else stated it’s great. I got the 512 Gb which should last me a while and the response is lightning quick. I would highly recommend it if you like Chromebooks and want a premium experience. And the screen is pretty good too.

Sample Customer Review…Let me start by saying that I’m traveling right now. With me, I have this laptop, along with my work laptop, a 2020 16″ Macbook Pro, and an iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard. Not once I have reached for the Macbook. I absolutely love the form factor of this 13″ Dell. It’s tiny, but the screen and keyboard are magnificent! The screen has rich, gorgeous colors that radiate across a near-bezel-free presentation. The Gorilla Glass touch screen is incredibly useful when consuming content, like the newspaper. In addition, the keyboard is comfortable and full-sized, despite this laptop’s tight little package.

In addition to the form factor, the laptop is speedy and comes with loads of storage and RAM. I regularly edit photos in Lightroom and it’s working perfectly. I often have a dozen windows open, including Lightroom, a Figma design document (I’m a UX designer) with heavy graphical elements, and Pandora or YouTube TV running in the background. This little laptop supports it all. In fact, it’s hard to find ANYTHING bad to say about it. But I’ll stretch a bit and say that it can get a little hot. That said, even at its hottest, it’s still quiet.

If you’re looking for a great laptop that incredibly portable and lightweight, look no further. I’m truly in love with this gem!!

7. LG Gram 17″

The processor of LG Gram 17 is the 8th Gen. Intel® Core™ i7 processor. The operating system of LG Gram 17 is Windows 10 Home. The screen size of LG gRAM 17 is 17 inches with a resolution of 2560 x 1600. LG Gram 17 has a battery life of up to 19.5 hours. The memory of LG Gram 17 is 16 GB and the storage of it is 512 GB SSD. This laptop includes a thunderbolt.

LG designed this laptop that can handle hot and cold weather. However, it gives people a plastic feeling when teaching it. LG made it really elastic, which you are able to bend slightly but this won’t change its shape. Furthermore, the screen is not matte so it reflects light easily. Even though it’s less weight, it’s hard to carry around due to its size.

Specifications

  • CPU: 8th Gen. Intel® Core™ i7 processor
  • Operation System: Windows 10
  • Storage: 512 GB SSD
  • RAM: 16 GB
  • Dimensions: 22 inches X 12 inches X 3 inches
  • Weight: 2.95 lbs
Pros
  • Lightweight
  • Great battery life
  • Amazing display
Cons
  • No touchscreen
  • Expensive
  • Feels flimsy

Sample Customer Review…You know those cardboard laptop mockups they display in model homes? That’s what I thought I was holding the first time I picked this up. It is impossibly lightweight- even if it were a 13″ tablet, much less a full-size 17-inch laptop. Even the power source is lightweight, with a remarkably tiny, mini L-plug. I’m telling you, you will not BELIEVE how light this thing is!

But that’s just the first impression. This baby boots in 6 seconds, and continues at lightning speed through every task I have asked of it, from VPN-ing to two computers at the same time, to opening multiple databases and spreadsheets, etc., etc. I am NOT a gamer, so I can’t speak to its speed in that environment. But it is an essential work tool.

The keyboard is ergonomically excellent- plenty of space for my large fingers and just enough “give” to be satisfying without slowing my 86-word-per-minute typing. The complaints I’ve seen about the small “Backspace” key have been irrelevant to me.

The screen is vividly brilliant. I could do without the mirror-like reflectivity, but that’s only a problem in a brightly backlit environment. The speaker audio is plenty adequate for a laptop. HDMI works flawlessly. Oh, and the battery life reviews have proven accurate. I can put this laptop through challenging use for four or five hours on end and have more than half the battery life remaining.

Outstanding value for the money. I’d grab one before the price rises too much further.

Sample Customer Review…After owning three economical laptops, and the last seven years as a Samsung owner, I decided to upgrade from my 15 in Samsung laptop to the luxurious HP Spectre. I’m a daily laptop user – I Toodle, browse, and surf – so my computer needs are fairly basic. However, I did a lot of research before purchasing and this was my criteria: portable, long battery life, and 13in screen size. So far, the HP Spectre fits the bill. In comparison to my ancient Samsung, this laptop is sleek, light, and very aesthetically pleasing. The ports are easily accessible but are cleverly built into the design of the laptop so they don’t stand out. The feature I’m loving is the ability to turn the webcam on and off. There is a small little button on the side for on/off. I was using a piece of felt to cover the webcam on my Samsung, so this is a vast improvement. I use OneDrive and have a Google Account, so setup was fairly easy.

As for housekeeping, delivery was very fast, the packaging was equally as sleek. The packaging was actually pretty glamorous and it increased my anticipation of cracking the baby open. Overall, I’m very pleased with this laptop and couldn’t be happier. It is spendy and about $500 more than what I normally spend on a laptop, but if you are a light computer user and are looking to treat yourself or upgrade, the HP Spectre is for you.

Sample Customer Review…After ten years of wanting a MacBook but never “needing” one, I finally decided to bite the bullet and treat myself. I am SO glad that I did. It’s such a rich and smooth experience that can’t be described unless you see it for yourself. The keys are like butter. The display is incredible. The touch-ID is super convenient. It’s as light as a feather. And I love how my MacBook “communicates” with my iPhone and Apple Watch.

I was worried that I’d have a tough time figuring out how to navigate the operating system because I’m not very tech-savvy, but within a few hours I figured everything out just fine. I will NEVER settle for Windows again. Like my headline says, “Once you go Mac, you never go back.” Lol

I mainly purchased this because I needed a new device to trade stocks on after my old Dell PC took a dump. This MacBook is lightning fast and allows me to complete my work so efficiently. I do, however, recommend buying a USB-C hub because you won’t be able to connect any accessories without it.

Just buy it already.

Sample Customer Review…I just wanted to echo the positive reviews. This is a spectacular Chromebook. I’ve had an Acer 720 since Jan 2014 (and have been happily Windowsless since that time). Even though I’ve found many of the newer models sexier, I was never able to find an upgrade that was as speedy and portable as the 720. However, this new Asus 302CA is what I’ve always wanted out of a Chromebook, and it is an amazing step up from the Acer. It’s faster, the screen is MUCH nicer, and it has twice the memory and four times the drive space. As a professor, I’ve found my Chromebook to be an indispensable tool in the classroom, at home, and at the coffee shop, and because the hardware of this Asus is so fantastic, this computer will likely serve me just as long (if not longer) than my Acer 720 (which is still going, it’s worth noting).”

Buying Guide: Things to Consider Before Purchasing A Laptop for Developers

Mobility

It’s important to consider if you are going to carry it around a lot or not. Since you are going to need to multitask, you will need to have multiple windows open on your laptop at the same time, and the display of the laptop should be 14inches minimum.

Moreover, the battery life should last at least 6 hours so that you don’t have to carry your charger around when you only go out for a short period of time. In addition, you should check on the weight and this should be based on your own opinion. If you are going to carry your laptop around a lot, it is good to have a laptop that weighs less.

CPU

The central processor unit (CPU) contains the datapath and control. In other words, the CPU can read and write the memory and command different parts of the computer to do corresponding tasks. The most recommended are i5 and i7.

System Memory

System memory is where the temporary data is, which is not permanent. You can decide it based on the size of the RAM (Random-access memory). The recommended size of the RAM is at least 16 GB.

Storage

Storage is where the permanent data is and the data is saved unless you delete it or the storage breaks. A solid-state drive (SSD) and hard disk drive (HDD) are two types of storage. SSD is much faster than HDD when you try to fetch data. As a programmer, you will probably want to have an SSD. However, a laptop that has an SSD costs more compared to the one that has an HDD. The recommended size of the storage is at least 512 GB.

Operating System

The main operating systems(OS) in the world now are Linux, macOS, and Microsoft Windows. Based on your programming preference or future programming tasks, it’s really important to choose the correct operating system. You should choose a laptop that pre-installed the OS you want or the product is able to be changed to a different OS you want.

Display

As a programmer, you will spend lots of time looking at your screen. It’s important to have a display that’s good for your eyes. The recommended display is Full HD, in which the screen resolution is 1920 x 1080.

Keyboard

One last most important thing you will need to consider is the keyboard. Try it out first before you purchase the laptop. A good keyboard should be comfortable for you to type and it should not be easily broken.

Conclusion

Based on the different components that you are willing your laptop has, the price will change dramatically. It’s important to decide which you will actually need the most for your laptop. Since you are going to spend so much time with the laptop, you should be careful about the choice you make. We hope our list of the best laptops for developers gives you a chance to narrow down your search.
