1. Audio Technica ATH-M20x

Starting with the one that cuts the closest to our budget the Audio Technica ATH-M20x is an over-ear, wired studio monitor headphones made for studio tracking and mixing. Its contemporary design and use of high-quality materials make for a wonderful studio experience. It’s got great sound isolation with minimal bleed made possible by its contoured and tight sealed ear pads. It may be the most expensive on the list but it is known for delivering great audio and exceeding expectations given its price.

Specifications

  • Over-ear
  • 40 mm driver size
  • 15 Hz – 20 kHz frequency response
  • 96 dB sensitivity
  • 6.70 oz
  • 15-degree ear cup swivel (both directions)
Pros
  • Lightweight but sturdy and durable
  • Comfortable
  • Crisp and clear audio
  • Long cord
Cons
  • Not collapsible
  • Tighter on the head
  • Headband feels still

Sample Customer Review…These have worked perfectly with so many projects, I’ve used them with my mac book pro and the blue mic and I’ve been able to create some great voiceovers, podcasts and edit audio in a room full of people. That says a lot for a journalist trying to meet a deadline without interruption. So comfortable wearing on those long editing days. Clear and crisp sound quality, especially when editing in layers. Great for any professional.

2. Samson SR850

The Samson SR850 is the only open-back headphones on the list as most budget headphones are closed back. These headphones offer an extremely wide frequency range which gives users extremely accurate playback which is critical for mixing. Its earpad design reduces fatigue and makes it easy to keep on for long periods of time, meaning they’re perfectly comfortable for long mixing or listening sessions. In addition to the great earpad design and open back these headphones also come with a self-adjusting headband. While this is also pretty close to our budget, they are the perfect cheap alternative for expensive studio headphones.

Specifications

  • Over-ear
  • 50 mm driver size
  • 20 Hz – 20 kHz frequency response
  • 110 dB sensitivity
  • 5.60 oz
Pros
  • Self-adjusting headband
  • Good open-back headphone for its budget price
  • Excellent sound and outstanding clarity
  • Comfortable, especially for long studio sessions
Cons
  • Open back may make it unsuitable for recording
  • Less reliable for anything else besides home or studio listening

Sample Customer Review…These are fantastic headphones for the price they are listed at. They are super comfortable and lightweight while not really feeling like a cheap pair of headphones. I think the dynamic range and soundstage with these is crazy good and comparable to a pair of expensive AKGs or Beyerdynamic open backs. These headphones are semi-open backs which I really like because you get the best of both worlds.

I personally use these for my home office setup while working and just general music listening, and they are my favorite headphone I’ve owned. You can pick out every instrument in a piece of music clearly, and speech is clear as day like they’re in the room with you. Definitely pick these up for a budget pair of studio reference headphones for a fraction of the price of the big-name brands

3. LyxPro HAS-10

The LyxPro HAS-10 closed-back over-ear studio monitor and mixing headphones were designed and made to provide audiophiles and professionals a great and reliable experience with their monitoring and mixing sessions. Its closed-back design offers a seal for the user’s ears to serve little to no bleed.

The headphones’ lightweight build, leather stitched headband, along with the foam and leather ear pads make for comfortable wear even on long mixing or monitoring sessions. These also have a single-sided straight cable which can be a preference for many people, as well as the durability the screw-on jack adds. These headphones are such a great budget option for studio use.

Specifications

  • Over-ear
  • 45 mm driver size
  • 10 Hz – 26 kHz frequency response
  • 98 dB sensitivity
  • 10.4 oz
  • 180-degree rotatable ear cups
Pros
  • Headband and ear pads are padded
  • Little to no bleed
  • Well built with great quality materials for its budget price
  • Quality feel
Cons
  • Its 6ft cord may not suffice for some people
  • Some reports of its cord being unreliable and easily breakable

Sample Customer Review…LyxPro HAS-10 Closed Back Over-Ear Professional Studio Monitor & Mixing Headphones is a must-have. Firstly, it is comfy on the ears, a very lengthy cord (I have the freedom to get up and do anything in my room with this headphone on due to the lengthy cord it has, just awesome). Secondly, almost everything around me is muted (unless there is a loud sound/noise from something then you might hear it, a little).

Nice ear pads, and what I love overall about the design is, it’s one cord leading into the headphone so if you want to look anywhere in the room then you have that freedom without straining the cord. I give it a five because it is suitable for any type of environment and it gives you so much freedom to work and cancel outside noise, perfect replacement for wireless headphones as well… well done LYXPRO.

4. OneOdio Pro-10

The OneOdio Pro-10 is actually a professional DJ over-ear headphones with its dynamic bass sounds. However, this does not mean they are purely for DJ uses; they can be used and are ideal for mixing, monitoring, and any other high-quality sound use. The ear cups rotate 90 degrees in both directions and the earmuffs are premium soft ear cushions that make for a comfortable headset that can be worn for long mixing and studio sessions.

However, they are a little snug and can be a little uncomfortable for some people. These headphones are also extremely flexible which means they can be adjusted to fit anyone’s head and they’re collapsible/foldable making them perfect for on the go.

Specifications

  • Over-ear
  • 50 mm driver size
  • 20 Hz – 20 kHz frequency response
  • 110 dB sensitivity
  • 10.6 oz
  • 90-degree rotatable ear cups (both directions)
Pros
  • Really great quality
  • Dual input ear pads
  • Collapsible
  • Comfortable
Cons
  • Bulky
  • Snug ear pads make it unsuitable for some people

Sample Customer Review…THESE HEADPHONES ARE AMAZING! They’re comfortable, sound great, are versatile, and fold/come with a carrying pouch for portability! The ear cups flip 90 degrees which allow you to flip one ear cup to listen with one ear. Also, you can flip both ear cups and wear the headphones comfortably around your neck! This may not seem like a big deal, but it makes wearing the headphones around your neck way more comfortable and desirable.

One of my favorite features is the long/adapter-free cable. It stretches to almost 10 feet and allows you to plug into 3.5mm or 6.35mm(1/4 inch)! On the headphones, there are two separate plugs(3.5mm and 6.35mm). The cable is 3.5mm on one end and 6.35mm on the other. When plugging into your phone or other small devices, you simply plug the 6.35mm end into your headphones and then the 3.5mm into your device.

When plugging into a soundboard or other professional equipment, you simply plug the 3.5mm end into your headphones and then the 6.35mm(1/4 inch) end into your soundboard/equipment. You never need adaptors! It also comes with another cable (3.5mm on both ends with a mic). This is for your phone. It allows you to answer/make phone calls and also listen to your music.

These headphones are incredible and should be much more expensive. They perform like $100+ headphones but at a much more reasonable price! You also can register these online with the company and get a 2-year warranty plus a free gift.

5. Edifier H840

The Edifier H840 is an over-ear wired headphone designed to give audiophiles the most accurate audio experience in the studio. Its simple and chic design, along with the quality materials used make for a perfectly comfortable all-day wear. The over-ear design offers users excellent noise isolation against outside noise. Edifier, a pretty unknown brand offers audiophiles such a wonderful studio experience with these headphones at a great and budget-friendly price.

Specifications

  • Over-ear
  • 40 mm driver size
  • 20 Hz – 20 kHz frequency response
  • 90 dB sensitivity
  • 6.74 oz
Pros
  • Overall great sound quality
  • Comfortable for most people (Doesn’t squeeze on the head too much compared to others)
  • Collapsible
  • Sturdy headband
  • Great isolation sound
Cons
  • Its 6ft cord may not suffice for some people

Sample Customer Review…I was looking for a combination of great sound quality with the durability of the material. I had talked to several people who had spent hundreds of dollars on the most popular headphones, only to complain that the material had worn out (wires split, ear pads wore out, head connector broke). In reading online reviews I discovered this European commercial sound room headphones brand.

The sound quality is excellent, I can’t hear anything outside the headphones, even when I don’t have music or a podcast on. The material seems very durable with a thin steel frame through the head connector, high-quality leather-covered earpads (actual leather, not pleather), and thicker than usual connector cable. I’m really, really happy with this purchase!

6. Anker Soundcore Life Q20

The Anker Soundcore Life Q20 are over- ear headphones sold at a reasonable price. These headphones are comfortable due to the memory foam ear-cups. The foldable ear-cups and long battery life make these the perfect headphones to take with you on the go. Not only are these headphones easy to travel with, but the multi purpose power button on the left ear cup gives users the ability to connect to bluetooth. Overall, these headphones are great and are sold at an affordable price.

Specifications

  • Over-ear
  • 40 mm driver size
  • 40 kHz frequency response
  • 35dB sensitivity
  • 9.3 oz
Pros
  • Good sound quality
  • Noise cancelling
  • Long Battery life
  • Comfortable
  • Lightweight
Cons
  • Made with low quality materials

Sample Customer Review…I’m really fond of Soundcore products, especially these over-ear Life Q20 headphones. They’re very comfortable, the overall sound quality is clear – good highs and bass response, with plenty punch in the extra bass mode. Mids are clear and not overpowered or washed out.

Microphone quality is acceptable, average to okay. Charge time is good and the battery life lasts an entire day of use at normal volume without sound cancelation on. The build quality of the headphones is very good, I would not be surprised to see these displayed in a store display that really calls attention to the product.

Speaking of noise cancelation: This is the feature that I think allows these headphones to rival Sony or Bose, it is supreme. Most headsets just pipe in “white noise” and it makes most audio sound… fuzzy. Unclear. Static-y. These headphones offer active noise cancellation and wow, it’s really impressive. If you suffer from sensitivity to background noise bleed-in? These headphones are for you.

Oh, and as a last bonus, they offer a 3.5mm headphone line as well as Bluetooth. That’s the feature that won me over, it’s so simple but so useful to me, an audio engineer. Thanks, Soundcore.

Specifications

  • Over-ear

  • 10 Hz – 27 kHz frequency response
  • 98 dB sensitivity
  • 10.6 oz
Pros
  • Simple design and lightweight
  • Clear and balanced audio
  • From a known and trusted company
Cons
  • Materials used aren’t of the best quality
  • Its 6ft cord may not suffice for some people

Sample Customer Review…For the low price, these sell for you’d expect to get a low-quality product. But what you get instead is something that sounds great! These have for the price very good audio quality.

The highs mids and lows all have great balance and to top it all off they’re made pretty good. The cord length is very long, the cord is nice and thick and the cord is soft and supple. The earcups are directional so you absolutely must make sure you get the left and right earcups on correctly.

The headband is sturdy enough and feels like it’s not even on your head. The earpads aren’t the softest but they’re comfortable since these headphones don’t weigh anything.

So overall these were a good buy. When these headphones are driven by an old CD player or a PC they’ll sound great.

Overall great buy, Panasonic has always delivered on the quality/price ratio.

The music has a great sound!!! They are not Bluetooth and are wired but that works fine for me because my system is not set up for Bluetooth.

HIGHLY recommend if you want wired headphones. Easy to use as well

  • 110 dB sensitivity
  • 10.2 oz

Pros
  • High-quality capsules
  • Lightweight and nice design
  • Comfortable
  • Good noise cancellation
Cons
  • Not the most sturdy headphones
  • Materials used aren’t of the best quality

Sample Customer Review…Three words: awesome, awesome, awesome. Or rather one word repeated three times. The moment I put these headphones on I fell in love with them. Until I had gotten this pair I was borrowing my wife’s headphones. The headphones were smaller so they sat on top of my ears as opposed to over them so they would get uncomfortable. Not with these, however.

My ears were surrounded in comfort. The large headband is comfortable as well. The sound quality is amazing and they can attain an amazing level of volume without losing the sound quality. If you have the right equipment these headphones can reach some really deep bass as well. You won’t hear it as well with an MP3 player because they can only pump out a certain amount of bass. Even then it still sounds great.

Depending on what works best for the user, these headphones can be used with wires or wirelessly. Overall, these headphones are very versatile and made with quality materials due to their anti-scratch surface.

Specifications

  • Over-ear
  • 40 mm driver size

  • Come in a variety of colors
  • Anti-scratch surface
  • Multi-functional buttons
  • Affordable
Cons

Sample Customer Review…The aux cord and Bluetooth both work great. I’m plenty happy with the sound quality and like how these buttons are compared to my last headphones from a different company. These have a good button layout that I don’t have to think about when I want to use them. The pause/play button being so large and in the middle makes it really easy to pause quickly if needed.

Things to Consider Before Buying

There are a lot of products in the studio equipment field, especially in the headphones line. There are things that you might want to consider for your best interest before committing to one and spending your money. We’re here to help you think through these things to see which ones would be best for you.

Over-ear vs. On-ear

This one speaks for itself. On-ear headphones sit on the ears and don’t create a seal in the same way over-ear headphones do given the fact that over-ears sit around one’s ears. In addition, on-ear headphones can create some soreness with the constant press on the ears while it can get hot in over-ear headphones.

Open back vs Closed back

This may not be too much of a deal-breaker when looking into budget headphones because most budget headphones have a closed back. However, for knowledge sake, open-back headphones let air through the ear cups which affect your sound and can help it sound more natural and clear. They are good for critical listening when inside a studio or at home without too much background noise. Closed-back headphones are sealed and don’t let any air or other noise through. While closed-back headphones have a less natural sound they are successful in blocking outside noise.

Conclusion

There are so many options for your future headphones out there and the ones we’ve laid out are just 7 of the millions out there. However, it is a start and the 7 we’ve listed out for you are the best and most trusted pair of studio headphones on a budget. We’re confident that after reading our opinion on the best studio headphones under $50 and considering all your options regarding exactly what you need and what will fit, that you can find the perfect budget-friendly studio headphones for you.
