How to Make a Caramel Macchiato

If you’re like most people, coffee is essential for a successful and productive day. With the rise of trendy and local coffee shops, it can be tempting to try out those new and delicious flavors. The problem with these temptingly trendy coffee shops is that they can become very pricey over time, especially when it’s practically half the cost to make at home. So why spend the money when you can learn how to make a caramel macchiato just as easily in the comfort of your own kitchen? If you’re only making coffee for yourself, make sure to buy the proper coffee maker that fits your needs.

What is a Caramel Macchiato?

Caramel macchiatos are a classic yet simple kind of coffee that can be made with a couple of ingredients and a few quick steps. Caramel macchiatos are on almost every coffee shop menu and can be as simple or as complex as you want!

Before we get started, it’s good to have an idea about what a caramel macchiato is. A typical caramel macchiato consists of frothed milk poured over freshly brewed espresso with a few pumps of vanilla syrup and topped with a generous amount of caramel sauce. It can be served hot or chilled over ice and might even include whipped topping.

To make this delicious drink at home, here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1-2 shots espresso
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 pumps of vanilla syrup
  • Drizzle of caramel sauce
  • Whipped cream (optional)
  • Ice (optional)

To make a simple, hot caramel macchiato, start by brewing 1-2 shots of espresso. When purchasing an espresso machine, make sure it’s perfect for your lifestyle so that your coffee turns out amazing and consistent every time. For coffee brands, I highly recommend the Gevalia espresso brand for caramel macchiatos because it really brings out the flavor of the coffee with the caramel.

Next, you’re going to either heat the cup of milk in a pot over the stove or steam it using the frother attached to your espresso machine.

Once the milk is hot, add about 2 pumps of the vanilla syrup of your choice into the milk then stir until combined. For a sweeter caramel macchiato, add more vanilla syrup until desired taste is achieved.

Once the espresso is finished brewing, pour it into a ceramic mug. Make sure you don’t let the espresso sit for too long otherwise it can burn and result in a poorly tasting caramel macchiato.

Next, you’re going to pour the milk over the espresso. Make sure there is a light layer of foam remaining on top for extra texture.

Now, this is the best part, adding the caramel sauce! You can either make your own caramel sauce using the easy recipe below or a store-bought brand such as Ghirardelli works just as well.

Drizzle a decent amount of caramel on top of the milk foam then add whipped cream if you desire!

The great thing about making specialized drinks at home is so you can customize them to your liking.

To make an iced caramel macchiato, the steps will be similar but without heating the milk.

Start by brewing your desired espresso and pouring it into a jar or glass.

Next, instead of heating the milk, you’re simply going to pour the milk over the espresso shots.

Add a few pumps of vanilla syrup then lightly stir until combined. Once the vanilla is mixed, add some ice cubes before pouring over the caramel sauce.

Drizzle the caramel sauce over the milk, add whipped cream and more caramel then enjoy!

How to Make Caramel Sauce

If you really want to spice up your barista-making skills with the caramel macchiato, you can always make your own caramel sauce!

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 cup sugar
  • ¼ cup water
  • 6 tbsp butter
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • Pinch of salt

To make the caramel sauce, start by mixing sugar and water together in a saucepan over medium heat until thoroughly combined.

Stir the mixture until the sugar has dissolved and starts to bubble after roughly 3-4 minutes.

Once bubbles start to form, stop stirring and gently swirl around the pan.

Continue this process for around 10-12 minutes until the mixture starts to turn a honey color (make sure you don’t burn the sugar)!

Slowly add in the sliced butter and whisk quickly until the butter has completely melted.

Remove the saucepan from the stovetop then slowly pour in the heavy cream.

Once the cream is combined, add the vanilla and salt, stir, then set aside to cool before enjoying on your caramel macchiato!

Conclusion

Coffee doesn’t need to be complicated or expensive. With a few steps and ingredients, you can make an amazing drink in the comfort of your own kitchen with your own coffee machine. Coffee doesn’t have to be complicated either and making a plain cup of coffee is always an option as well. There are always ways to elevate your barista skills as well, such as trying different flavors, experimenting with different types of coffee, and even making your own caramel sauce!
