Top 12 Best Thread for Sewing
1. Aurifil Mako Cotton Thread Solid 50 wt 1422yds
Aurifil is one of the highest quality threads on our list, and Amazon reviews seem to agree. Sporting almost all 5-star reviews, with not even a single 1 or 2-star, we have found that Aurifil integrates itself smoothly into every project. It has very low lint levels and merges in fairly easily with cotton fabric.
Aurifil, however, maybe for the more experienced or advanced sewer. This thread is slightly more delicate than the others we have seen. Yet, shortcomings aside, it is great for quilting and seaming as well as exhibits fewer snarl-ups and knots for sewing by hand or machine.
- Cotton-based thread
- 1.44 Ounces
- Good for seams and quilting
- Low lint
Sample Customer Review… This is Aurifil. What more do I need to say? Low lint, doesn’t shred, suitable for seams or quilting.
The color is a good neutral, not as stark as white but still light enough to use with muslin.Read more reviews at Amazon.com.

- 50-piece set
Sample Customer Review… I was pleasantly surprised with this thread. First of all, the box is great because it has Velcro dots on the front flap for easy open. The thread spools are larger than I thought they were going to be. The spools have a “snap trap” top for keeping the thread ends securely. You flip the top “lip” up to remove the thread then you slip the end of the thread under the flap and snap it shut. SO convenient! The variety of colors covers just about anything you can sew. Someone complained about not enough black or white but you can substitute other colors for white or black, i.e., use deep blue or dark green instead. Also, there are several light colors. There are 9 variegated threads; pink, red, purple, lavender, blue, green, orange/yellow, orange/brown, and a multicolored spool. There are 4 pinks, 5 off whites, 1 black, 1 gray, 4 reds, 3 purples, 6 blues, 7 greens and olive, 3 yellows, 3 oranges, 3 browns, and a peach. I haven’t sewed anything with them yet, but I have used a LOT of thread in my 62 years and I can pretty much judge that this is a nice thread. It is made in Mexico, which was a slight disappointment to me because I have been trying to buy American-made items. The thread comes from Coats & Clark in Greenville, South Carolina so I figured it was made there. There is a complete range of 342 colors and if I were rich, I would buy them all! I was also surprised by the size of the box. It measures 10 1/2″ X 15″ X 1 1/2″, if you care. It is an excellent storage box. I am very happy with my purchase!Read more reviews at Amazon.com.

Sample Customer Review… I got a Singer 4423 Heavy Duty machine for Christmas and spent hours researching thread. I finally went with this one to begin my first project of making our daughter a t-shirt quilt. Learned how to make a bobbin, thread the needle, and assemble the top of my quilt all with Gutermann thread and I LOVE it! Not a single hitch. I started out using the needle that came in the machine but had to switch to a heavy-duty needle because the fusing I used was extremely thick. After making a practice quilt sandwich, I used this thread to practice everything from straight stitching the pieces together, stitching in the ditch, and straight-line quilting. Since I do not have a freestyle quilt foot (yet), I invented my own freestyle quilting using the foot the machine came with by just freestyling forward, reverse, and even large curves. The thread is perfect- no lint, no breaks, looks pretty, and held up to washing & drying the practice square. My freestyle foot will be delivered by Amazon today & I’ll get to try that out after I sew the large quilt sandwich together. For first-timers- enjoy the process of your new machine and project. Set little goals. Be patient and stick with Gutermann thread!Read more reviews at Amazon.com.

Sample Customer Review… I have found a new embroidery thread. I have a Pfaff 7570 and it is very fussy when it comes to threads and needles. I ordered this thread but wasn’t expecting much because my machine tends to destroy the thread, but boy was I WRONG about this one. I tested several colors with an embroidery program that usually causes issues with thread breakage and was very surprised and elated. The thread never broke or shredded (which most of the time is a needle issue) it handled the pattern perfectly. The luster of the thread is exactly what I was looking for.Read more reviews at Amazon.com.

It’s a thick plastic easy to open and organize case. The quality for the price is excellent. Tread has not been weak or broken. Would buy another. 7. LE PAON Sewing Kit
This kit comes with 24 polyester spools for many projects, particularly for adding embroidery details to blouses, blankets, and much more. It comes with 30 needles, seven buttons, one gold thimble, and a threader.
The thread is 100% polyester and doesn’t easily break or fray. The vibrant colors are awesome for many sewing projects. Of course, some people claim that the thread doesn’t usually hold very well and snaps off easily. Some sewers even complained about the spools being made of cardboard, claiming that they could crush easily
Sample Customer Review… I sew A LOT. When I came across this deal, the thread can be pricey so thought I would try it out. I am very pleased with the quality and that the spools are bigger than regular spools assuring I will have enough to complete a project. The variety of colors are excellent since I do a lot of projects for my grandkids. The only thing I found difficult was finding the end (or beginning) strand but that could very well just be my eyesight. Very good product for the price would definitely purchase again. Thanks!Read more reviews at Amazon.com.

Sample Customer Review… I love the colors in this selection. I make blankets for Project Linus so I use a lot of thread in a vast variety of colors. I was going to order individual colors but this selection has all that I needed. The only thing I would change is I would have liked two each of both black and white, but that is my personal need. I have had no problem with the thread breaking while I am sewing. And the price is amazing. Love it. Thank you.Read more reviews at Amazon.com.

Types of Thread
When deciding on what type of thread to purchase, it can be overwhelming with all the types and various measurements available such as strengths (number of plies) and thicknesses (weight of thread). Due to this difficulty, we have provided a buyers guide that simplifies it all – so even the beginner sewer can find their perfect match.
Cotton is both strong and soft, known for not being too stretchy. Thus, it is perfect for things like quilting because it is tougher and can hold its own shape more easily. It is also best for light or medium-weight fabrics.
Cotton is also special in that it is heat resistant; this means you can iron your finished project or have it withstand the heat from quick friction without worry. Cotton combines the advantages of a silk thread with its shinier finish but includes its own colorfastness (how difficult it is for the color to wash off).
A wide variety of cottons are also mercerized, meaning it has gone through plenty of chemical treatments to increase its dye and water absorptivity. One downside to cotton, however, is that because it is not stretchy, you should not try using it on anything that is not already 100% cotton. Otherwise, you risk breaking your project.
Polyester/nylon, on the other hand, is known for being a little stretchier. It is great for projects where you will end up wearing what you have created or modified. It also has very low lint levels – something the advanced sewer typically looks for in a thread. Polyester/nylon often has a waxy or silicon finish, allowing it to slide through fabric with little to no friction and making it perfect for topstitching.
This, however, does burn very easily so we suggest avoiding heat with polyester/nylon at all costs. As well, it does not work very well with cotton, since polyester is stronger than cotton and can break the cotton.
Silk is less often used, but really strong and beautiful. It works well with all fabrics but is best with delicate ones as it would not leave holes in the fabric. Since it is not as commonly used (typically only used when one needs to match the thread percentage), we have not included any on our list.
We hope that after reading this guide, you find your sewing journey a little easier. We tried to include all of the best thread for sewing that you would need – a buyer’s guide, pros, and cons, product descriptions, and specifications, etc. We have also aimed for this to be useful, whether you have just started sewing or are a veteran at the craft. So whatever you are doing, be it machine sewing, hand-sewing, quilting, or anything else in this ballpark, we hope this guide has been helpful.
