1. Brother XM2701

The Brother XM2701 is a great option for the best affordable sewing machine you can buy. It is a lightweight, easy-to-use sewing machine that is perfect for a beginner or someone looking for an affordable sewing machine. Although this machine is easy to use, it comes with a variety of features that leave room for the advancement of sewing projects. This machine has 27 stitches and options for stitching including decorative, zigzag, blind hem, and stretch. The automatic features include a drop-in bobbin at the top and a needle threader, making this sewing machine even easier to use.

At only 12 lbs, this sewing machine is extremely lightweight and portable which makes it the perfect machine to do sewing classes with or take traveling. The LED light attached to the sewing machine is bright and will let you see the thread and details on darker fabrics. Brother is a well-known sewing machine and despite the low price, this sewing machine is of good quality and will give you good stitches every time.

Pros
  • Easy to navigate
  • Portable and lightweight
  • 25-year warranty
Cons
  • Not great for thicker fabrics
  • No hard case
  • Bobbin can be tricky to use

Sample customer review… I watched the DVD and read the reviews and manual before using it. I like the machine very much. Stitch selection is easy. Unlike some reviews, I find that the foot pedal operates like it should once you get used to the correct angle for your foot and/or the shoes you are wearing, just like with car pedals. I also find the light to be completely adequate, so perhaps those with complaints about the light have a defective part. Threading from the spool down to the needle takes practice since the take-up lever is recessed into the machine. Winding the bobbin is easy, as is threading it. My model has the quick-set bobbin, which simplifies it nicely. My machine also has the automatic needle threader, which I have not used and which looks very complicated in the manual and is not adequately demonstrated on the DVD. The reverse lever is positioned well and works great. If I could change one thing, it would be the location of the presser foot lever from the right underside of the machine, which requires you to remove your right hand from the fabric. Also, I wish the lever was metal and not plastic. The carry “handle” is not really a handle, or at least not one I would feel secure in using by itself with one hand. Overall, the stitch quality is perfect. I’ve given 5 stars in spite of the few criticisms because I would buy this machine again and would recommend it if asked. I need to add, many months after this review, that the automatic needle threader is very useful and much easier to use than it appears. I would not want to do without it now. It is well worth taking the time to learn how to use it.

2. Brother CS5055PRW

The Brother Project Runway sewing machine is a heavier, computerized sewing machine that has a lot of different features to sew a range of projects with. The LCD screen is large and you will be able to see and select your stitching with 70 stitching options to choose from. The bright LED light on the machine makes it easy to see dark fabric or detailed stitching.

There are also five options for a one-stitch buttonhole and the size can be custom. The impressive feed system makes this machine great for quilting and handling thicker fabrics. This machine is a good sewing machine for beginners or advanced sewers, as it has the capabilities to sew complex projects with ease. If you are looking for a more modern sewing machine with automatic features, then look no further because this is the best affordable sewing machine.

Pros
  • Computerized sewing machine
  • Automatic features are easy to use and see with the screen
  • Quiet
Cons
  • No case included

Sample customer review… This is an excellent machine for beginners and advanced users. I bought it for my mom but I had to learn about how to use it to show her as she was intimidated by the technical aspects of it. The LCD and push-buttons. Her old machine was also a Brother machine she had forever which was all manual.

The only two negative things I can think of is the “drawer” is open at the back so you need to keep everything in the pouch (provided). Also, I can’t seem to change the machine’s starting stitch (from straight-left (00) to straight-center (01)) when first powered on, but it’s really not that big of a deal. I might call them to help figure it out, but it really doesn’t bother me.

3. Brother Sewing and Quilting Machine, XR3774

Looking for the best affordable sewing machine AND quilting machine? Look no further, because this Brother sewing machine has plenty of features for an affordable price. The Brother XR 3774 has 37 built-in stitches and one one-step buttonhole for added ease and functionality. Tension, stitch length and width can be adjusted on the side of the machine manually.

There is also a manual thread cutter and handwheel to move the machine. Automatic features on this sewing machine include an automated needle threader and quick-set bobbin. This machine is equipped for a variety of sewing projects and small quilting projects but does not have embroidery capabilities. It can handle a range of fabrics but won’t handle thicker fabrics too well. Brother sewing machines are top-quality and built to last, and this machine is no exception.

Pros
  • Soft machine cover included
  • More features than other affordable sewing machines
Cons
  • Needle threader can be tricky to use
  • No drop feed dog

Sample customer review… I started sewing and sewed for a few hours, completed two projects and, I am convinced that it is a really good machine that I won’t be fighting with. I did not have to adjust tension once. I love the backward feature and the light and that it never jammed or had me stopping to fix the machine.

It is very quiet which I didn’t expect.
It looked complicated but the manual got me familiar with it so now it’s easy.
It came with all listed accessories and more, and it came with a white canvas dust cover with pockets for the foot pedal/plug, and accessories. I’m probably going to quilt my own dust cover for it though.

I can’t speak for its longevity since I just got it. So far I’m impressed.

4. Brother HC1850 Sewing and Quilting Machine

This Brother HC1850 computerized sewing machine is the best affordable sewing machine for both beginners and advanced sewers. With 130 stitches, 8 one-step buttonholes, and monogramming font, this machine is extremely versatile for a range of sewing levels. It comes with a flip chart, making this machine even easier to learn how to navigate at the beginning.

This machine also has special quilting features that include free motion quilting, 4 quilting stitch functions, and a detachable table. The maximum sewing speed is 850 stitches per minute and the speed can be easily adjusted according to the sewing project. You can also adjust the stitch length and width, and also the tension of the thread. This sewing machine is a great option for those on a tighter budget but is hoping to do a range of projects from beginner to advanced.

Pros
  • Many automatic features
  • Easy to navigate from the beginning
  • Comes with hardcover
Cons
  • Very basic monogramming fonts
  • Not good for heavy-duty quilting

Sample customer review… I do a lot of sewing & machine quilting. This is my 3rd sewing machine after many years of sewing. This Brother HC1850 is the best I’ve ever had. It sews, quilts & embroideries with a computer that is easy to use. The instructions are clear enough for novice seamstresses. I am disabled so sometimes my leg muscles just will not work. This machine gives you a choice of using the foot pedal or you can use the controls on the machine. It will move the presser foot up/down, start your seam, then stop & lift the presser foot. Of course, you are in control of the buttons & the speed so it is comfortable for your use. Another plus is this machine is not very heavy as my other ones. I also use a serger which is a bit heavier than my sewing machine. This is a real help if you suffer from motor problems as I do. The price is very good for a computerized machine that does so much. Great buy!

5. Janome 2212

The Janome 2212 sewing machine is the perfect machine for beginners or sewers looking to complete simpler projects with the best affordable sewing machine. This mechanical machine is lightweight and easy to set up and use, and with its small stature, it is the perfect machine to keep in a small place or bring with you places. This machine has 12 built-in stitches with a dial selector, a front-loading bobbin, a three-piece feed dog, and a thread cutter that is built into the machine as well.

These features allow the sewer to produce a range of sewing projects that may include quilting or making clothes. This machine can also handle fabric both thick and thin and the three-piece feed dog and thread cutter provide quality stitches on all types of fabric. Janome is a high-quality sewing machine company and this model will not disappoint.

Pros
  • Durable but a lightweight machine
  • Easy to use
  • 25-year warranty
Cons
  • Can be noisy
  • No automatic needle threader
  • Front-loading bobbin can be tricky to use

Sample customer review… This sewing machine is amazing. I can sew through several layers of fabric and it runs like a workhorse. I use Janome brand presser feet but have been buying the Distinctive brand presser feet for several years now, which are less expensive but just as well made as the Janome brand. As far as thread, I use Gutermann’s thread exclusively with this machine and I would suggest you invest in quality threads too. This machine let me know it would not tolerate low-quality threads because whenever I would use any dollar store thread or even Coats & Clark thread, it would tangle up in the feeds. As soon as I cleared the tangle and replaced the thread with the Gutermann’s, the machine ran smoothly and perfectly. It knows what it wants. I have not had to oil this machine since I have had it but if you want to do that, I suggest you find a sewing machine-specific oil and not using WD40 or any other oil in this machine. You take of this machine and it will take care of you. I can take this machine from room to room, it is lightweight and easy to carry around. I have had my machine for well over 5 years now and do not regret Janome one iota. The only part that has ever broken which I had to replace was the storage arm which was my own fault for pulling it off roughly one day when I was in a hurry. The 2212 is an older model machine but I find the older machines to be made better and if you can find this machine for below $300. 00, that’s a bargain! Can’t recommend this machine enough especially to beginners. So user-friendly!

6. Singer M1500

The Singer M1500 is a lightweight, portable sewing machine that is perfect for beginners, children, or any level sewer that needs a machine to perform simple tasks on the go. At just 10 lbs, this machine is incredibly lightweight and can be taken anywhere or stored in small settings. This machine has six different stitching options and they are all manual, meaning you cannot adjust the length or width of the stitch, which can be beneficial for beginner sewers who do not need anything complicated.

The winding bobbin and needle threader are easy to use and set up with the directions printed on the machine itself. The buttonhole system is four steps and has to be done manually, but the machine can still produce a good quality butthole on fabrics. The extra-high presser foot lift can accommodate a range of fabric thickness, but this machine is not heavy duty. If you are looking to do simple projects like alterations, this is the machine for you.

Pros
  • Super easy to use
  • 25-year warranty
Cons
  • Not many stitch options
  • Manual features like the buttonhole can be difficult to learn

Sample customer review… Great sewing machine. Easy to operate for beginners, but has also been designed for serious sewing! Does not have all the” bells & whistles ” that you find on expensive machines, but definitely has features/stitch patterns that are probably all that will be used the majority of the time. The exterior is plastic, but internally it is all metal. It will last a long time in regular use but would recommend a heavier duty machine for hard/ very thick cloth, or prolonged heavy use like quilting.

7. Singer Start 1304

This mechanic sewing machine is simple and the right sewing machine for a beginner or someone looking for an extremely moveable and portable machine. It is lightweight and easy to use. Although it lacks automatic features, this machine is still built to last. This machine has 57 stitch applications and the width and length of a stitch cannot be adjusted, but that is perfect for beginner sewers looking for simple projects to start.

The stitches included built-in to this machine are zigzag, satin, straight stitch, blind hem, scallop, and a 4-step buttonhole that can sometimes be tricky to learn. The bobbin winding system on this machine is fairly straight-forward with instructions printed on the top of the machine. This machine has dual spools and extra presser feet, opening up options for slightly more advanced projects.

Pros
  • Portable and lightweight
  • Easy to use with instruction printed on the machine
  • 25-year warranty
Cons
  • Limited functions for projects
  • Not best suited for advanced sewers

Sample customer review… I bought this sewing machine after reading reviews about its ease of operation and that it was a good machine for beginners. I have never sewed a thing in my life, and I have certainly never used a sewing machine. I had a project I needed this for and it was easier to buy a machine than try to find time to use someone else’s. This machine was incredibly easy to set up. It comes with step-by-step directions and diagrams. It took me about 45 minutes to set up, again because I had absolutely no idea what I was doing, but it was no fault for the directions at all. Once the machine was up and running, I was able to complete my project with ease. I was sewing some heavy-duty fleece fabric and had zero issues with the machine. I was really impressed with how my son’s Jedi robe turned out. I would recommend this machine to anyone looking for a simple machine. I am not sure what kind of limitations it has for the advanced sewers, but for basic, it’s perfect!

8. Bernette 33

This Bernette 33 Swiss Design sewing machine is a mechanical machine that has a variety of uses. This easy-to-use machine is a perfect machine for a beginner sewer, as it is easier to navigate than some of Bernina’s computerized or more advanced models. The Bernette 33 has 15 built-in stitches and the length and width is adjustable which can be helpful for a variety of projects.

This Bernette model is the priciest of the affordable sewing machines. Although a good machine for beginners, this machine is still very heavy-duty and will last you a long time, making it worth the higher price. It can still accomplish projects that include technical stitching and thicker fabric like jeans. You can control the speed with the peddle which can be both good and bad, but it is easy to reverse stitching on this machine if needed.

Pros
  • Easy to navigate
  • Very durable
Cons
  • Thread can jam easily
  • Can be noisy

Sample customer review… This is a real machine. It came in today with everything needed except for thread and cloth: It already had a needle attached to it. The good light came on to illuminate the sewing foot. It came with extra plastic bobbins, extra sewing needles; the plug-in to run the machine, and the sewing foot that you pedal on the floor. The manual was written in excellent English. My own Bernina is 50 years young, and still running excellently. This Bernette 33’s sewing table is a perfect size to handle some simple sewing at home. The carrying handle is attached at the top for easy moving. It is light enough to put on a table. A part of the sewing table detaches by left pulling it outward, which exposes a narrow arm for sewing sleeve or cuff or pant’s leg bottom. My old metal bobbin doesn’t fit the bobbin throttle; therefore I used their plastic bobbin. I got the hang of buttonholes after practicing a few times. The machine came in well oiled in top running conditions. After all, this is a practical sewing machine for home use.

9. Brother XM1010

This compact and lightweight sewing machine is the right sewing machine for beginners or experts who need a portable machine to travel with or keep as a back up machine. This machine has 10 built-in stitches and one buttonhole maker. It is easy to select your stitch with the knob that shows buttonhole, decorative, utility or stretch stitches.

The buttonhole is a four-step manual process and can be difficult to learn at first. The user’s manual makes threading the machine and using the top drop-in bobbin easy and there is also adjustable thread tension. This simple machine is ready to help a beginner sewer start a variety of sewing projects and is well-equipped to handle the projects with ease with this best affordable sewing machine.

Pros
  • Comes with a good amount of accessories
  • 25-year warranty
  • Good for beginners or those who don’t sew often
Cons
  • Not many automated features
  • Does not come with a case

Sample customer review… First, I was happily surprised at its ‘normal’ size. I was expecting something almost toy-like from some of the reviews. Yes, this is a real sewing machine for real adults.

It’s really easy to use, right out of the box with instructions for threading and putting the bobbin imprinted right on the machine. It has a thread cutter too.

It sews at variable speed from dead slow up to a whopping 750 stitches per minute making it perfect for most household projects. It will handle most weights of cloth up to denim and corduroy. But if you want to make canvas awnings, upholster your couch, or sew thick draperies you’ll need a more heavy-duty machine.

Overall, extremely good value!

10. Janome 5812

The Janome 5812 is a simple, yet efficient sewing machine that can help a sewer create a variety of projects. Although suited well for a beginner sewer, this machine can still perform a range of sewing tasks with its useful features. It has 12 built-in stitches and manual features that include a thread cutter, thread tension control, and a reverse threading lever. The top, drop-in bobbin at the top is easy to use as well.

This machine is perfect for a beginner but is also a good option for a sewer looking for a basic machine with nothing too complex. In general, this machine is durable and provides good quality stitch work. This machine is good for projects that include quilting or making simple clothes but isn’t suited for embroidery or detailed projects. Although a bit limited on capabilities, this Janome sewing machine is the best affordable option from this well-known brand.

Pros
  • Lightweight
  • Easy to use
  • 25-year warranty
Cons
  • Bobbin can be tricky
  • Manual features
  • Need to use a flywheel

Sample customer review… I just started sewing, and after my entry-level Singer machine started skipping stitches after 4 uses (over the course of 5 years spent mostly sitting on a shelf in my closet), I donated it and bought this machine. It has 12 stitches– 6 basics, and 6 stretches– and a four-step buttonholer. The stitch width is fully adjustable, and the height is adjustable for the basic zig-zag stitch. The description doesn’t mention this, but the machine comes with 4 presser feet: basic zig-zag foot, zipper foot, blind hem foot, and sliding buttonhole. The feet are all plastic, but seem well-made and sturdy, and are easy to snap on and off. I’ve only used the default zig-zag foot, which is clear so you can see the edge of your fabric even when sewing very narrow seams.

I’ve mostly used the basic stitches, but since getting this machine have been sewing up a storm. This is great for a beginner because I realized my previous attempts at sewing failed largely because of my frustration over my finicky Singer machine. I read the manual thoroughly (very good reference by the way, which includes explanations of how to use each stitch and recommended tension settings), and haven’t had any issues with this machine aside from user error (had skipped stitches when sewing lycra, but this was remedied by changing to stretch needles). Now that I have a sewing machine that works reliably, I get to actually make things instead of fussing with the machine. Also, there are enough stitches that I don’t see myself outgrowing this machine anytime soon– I will mostly be using it for projects around the house (curtains, cushions, slipcovers) and easy projects.

Buying Guide: Thing To Consider When Purchasing An Affordable Sewing Machine

Sewing machines come in a variety of models with a myriad of features, extensions and utilities. This may seem overwhelming at first; however, a simple breakdown of the key aspects to look for in entry-level sewing machines can help tremendously in finding a machine that is both suitable and easy to use.

Ease of Use

The most important thing to consider while picking an affordable sewing machine is the ease of use. Most machines come with easy-to-read and user-friendly guides and manuals; however, it is all about the comfortability you have as a user for each individual model. Some models will include more entry-level adjustments that make it easier for newer to begin projects; however, they may not include some features that more advanced users seek. Think of this relationship as a correlation between skill level and advanced features. The greater your skill level, the more advanced features you can look to use in sewing machines.

Weight

Finding the right weight is dependent on what uses you might have for the machine. Lightweight machines are easy to maneuver – easier to relocate or carry to a different location. The drawback is that these machines are not powerful enough to sew through tougher materials. On the flip side, heavier machines are more rigid and forceful, but they are often clunkier and harder to move around.

Noise Level

Noise levels of sewing machines are an important factor to consider if you prefer quieter machines. This factor is completely dependent on the model, brand and age of the machine upon purchase. If the noise level is a concern for you, consult reviews and demonstrations before you make a decision.

Durability

A case may be a simple addition, but it can go a long way towards the longevity of a sewing machine. Although some brands might offer machines that have great features, it is hard to enjoy those features if the machine itself begins to deteriorate. Additionally, the durability of a machine could also come down to how often it is used and the way the user utilizes the machine. If you are concerned about how long a sewing machine will last, look for warranties that are bundled in with a purchase. Warranties can come a long way if fixing a machine is not in your personal know-how. Keep in mind that machines that have longer life spans tend to be on the pricier side. Conversely, cheaper machines will most likely not last you as long as more expensive ones.

Conclusion

Although some options for the best affordable sewing machine lack some features, there are plenty of best affordable sewing machines to choose from that will last a long time and assist any level of sewer in a variety of projects. Whether you are simply looking for the cheapest option or the smallest option, this list provides recommendations of the ten best affordable sewing machines that are budget-friendly and versatile in features, size, and capabilities.

The most important thing to do when looking for the best affordable sewing machine is to do the research and find the right fit for your needs as a sewer. Whether a beginner or advanced sewer, the perfect and best affordable sewing machine is out there for you.
