1. Bernette 35 Swiss Design

The Bernette 35 Swiss Design is one of the best Bernina sewing machines for beginners or sewers looking for a simple, yet efficient sewing machine to use. This inexpensive, mechanical sewing machine has 23 built-in stitches and customizable features make this machine a perfect fit for the sewer looking to do a variety of projects with ease. Stitching width, length, and pattern can be set with ease by turning the three knobs located on the machine.

Also, the tension can be adjusted as well and the machine also has an automatic, one-step buttonhole function, making buttonholes easy to add to any project. Another great feature included in this machine is the seven snap-on presser feet. Needle threading does have to be done manually on this machine but does come with a needle threader, making it possible for beginners to figure out how to use it quickly. This is a very durable machine that can handle bigger projects that include thick material like jeans. Although easy to use, this machine may be better for adult beginners and not children.

Specifications

  • Stitch Width: 5 mm
  • Patterns: 23
  • Utility Stitches: 14
  • Buttonholes: 1-step
  • Hook System: Front loading

Pros

Pros
  • Affordable
  • Easy to use
  • Can perform a variety of projects
Cons
  • Needs to be oiled frequently
  • Can be noisy
  • Heavy machine

Sample Customer Review… I love that it is an all-mechanical machine meaning maintenance is easier and it won’t require software updates. It feels sturdy without weighing a ton. It isn’t overly loud while sewing and comes with easy instructions on how to use its many stitches. I sew a lot of clothes and this comes with all the features I need. It has a great stretch stitch for sewing with knitting.

The automatic buttonhole took me a bit to figure out, but it works well–I’d say the buttonholes come out slightly larger than needed, but you don’t have to open it the whole way. It comes with the hemmer foot which is the best for turning small 1/4 hems for ruffles, scarves, etc. And the zipper foot, while different from the one I’m used to using, works well. It comes with 5 plastic bobbins but universal bobbins fit as well.

2. Bernette 79

Bernette 79
36 Reviews

The Bernette 79 is definitely one of the best Bernina sewing machines as it is a versatile, computerized sewing machine that is ready to tackle any textile project you may have. With features including the semi-automatic needle threader, this machine can save you an abundance of time for heavier-duty projects such as quilting or time-consuming projects like embroidery which can require tedious work. This machine can create incredible embroidery work as it has several features that specifically relate to embroidery projects, such as an embroidery module with three hoops and hoop detection.

Other features include 500 built-in stitches and designs for both embroidery and quilting. You can also save stitch designs and it has extensive file format compatibility. This high-tech machine is worth the investment.

Specifications

  • Stitch Patterns: 500
  • Touch Screen
  • Embroidery and Quilting Included
Pros
  • Great for embroidery and quilting
  • Durable
  • Can save a lot of time
Cons
  • Pricey

Sample Customer Review… I wanted a machine with a minimum of plastic parts and not made in China. This machine met that criteria as close as my research shows is possible. I did find it important to use bobbin thread specifically for embroidery when embroidering and am still learning about the brands of thread my machine seems to prefer on that side. Oh and one great thing is the needle threader- my brother’s never worked properly and with my bad eyesight threading a needle is hard. This one works every time if you thread it properly. I love that. This machine has the most features for a machine in this price range that I could find and I love it.

3. Bernette 33 Swiss Design

This Bernette 33 Swiss Design sewing machine is a mechanical machine that has a variety of uses. This easy-to-use machine is perfect for a beginner sewer, as it is easier to navigate than some of Bernina’s computerized or more advanced models. The Bernette 33 has 15 built-in stitches and the length and width are adjustable which can be helpful for a variety of projects. Since this is a mechanical machine, it does not have a screen or automated features. Although a good machine for beginners, this machine is still very heavy-duty and will last you a long time.

It can still accomplish projects that include technical stitching and thicker fabric like jeans. You can control the speed with the peddle which can be both good and bad, but it is easy to reverse stitching on this machine if needed. This machine does have a semi-automatic needle threader which can sometimes be more consistent than an automatic needle threader. No matter which of the best Bernina sewing machines you pick, this one will not disappoint.

Specifications

  • Stitch Width: 5 mm
  • Patterns: 15
  • Utility Stiches: 14
  • Buttonholes: 4-step
  • Hook System: Front loading
Pros
  • Easy to navigate
  • Very durable
  • Affordable
Cons
  • Thread can jam easily
  • Can be noisy

Sample Customer Review… This Bernette 33’s sewing table is a perfect size to handle some simple sewing at home. The carrying handle is attached at the top for easy moving. It is light enough to put on a table. A part of the sewing table detaches by left pulling it outward, which exposes a narrow arm for sewing sleeve or cuff or pant’s leg bottom. I got the hang of buttonholes after practicing a few times. The machine came in well oiled in top running conditions. The motor runs smoothly. The stitch selection is perfect for just about anything, repairs or otherwise. After all, this is a practical sewing machine for home use.

4. Bernette 38

This computerized sewing machine is the perfect machine for a beginner sewer looking to purchase a digital machine and one of the best Bernina sewing machines on the market. Not only is this machine easy to use, but it also has a variety of features that include an automatic thread cutter, adjustable foot presser, 394 stitching options, and a feature that will remember and store your stitch combinations. Although this machine is computerized, it is easy to use and affordable. Stitch width and length can be adjusted as well, giving you a large variety of projects both simple and technical to choose from.

It also has three alphabets and 8 one-step buttonhole functions. The ease and low price of this machine make it an excellent choice for beginners or sewers looking for an affordable, yet simple machine to use. The only downside to this machine is that it does not have any embroidery features, so if you are looking to dabble in embroidery, this machine isn’t for you.

Specifications

  • Stitch Width: 7 mm
  • Patterns: 394
  • Buttonholes: 1-step, 8 options
  • Hook System: Drop-in
  • Free arm
Pros
  • Lower price
  • Easy to use
  • 10-year warranty
Cons
  • No embroidery functions
  • On the heavier side
  • Not great for heavy-duty projects

Sample Customer Review… One word to describe this machine would be sturdy. It feels like it is well made and solid. It is relatively quiet and feels like it is going to last. It sews well; the stitches are all even and the tension is balanced, and it is quiet. I can regulate the speed, which helps when sewing around tight curves. Most important is that the foot is stable while I am sewing. I have tested out other machines and often the foot feels a bit wobbly while I am sewing. This stitching is straight. The manual is easy to understand, and the touchscreen is pretty intuitive. I had a very small learning curve.

There are 500 stitches to use, 35 quilting-specific stitches, 17 buttonhole options, and four LED lights to give you the brightest light possible on this machine. Cons

  • Bobbin thread can sometimes get off track

Sample Customer Review… I am more than happy with this machine, very high quality, it is super quiet and has enough “bells and whistles” for me. Love the foot pedal, so much to like with this machine. Would like to add that on this machine you can use the Start/Stop button or the foot pedal without unplugging… Nice! And the wonderful foot pedal, programmable and does not slide around. And this machine will not eat your fabric. The onboard touchscreen can be utilized by a stylus or your finger. The layout is identical or very similar to the Bernina menus. And the quality is outstanding.
