1. JUKI TL-2000Qi Sewing and Quilting Machine

This mechanical, heavy-duty sewing machine has a variety of features that will aid you in all of your sewing endeavors both big and small. Although this machine is not officially industrial, it might as well be with its durable build and amount of technical features. This machine is easy to use for beginners and expert sewers and will last for years and years. One of the best features of this sewing machine is the speed of the machine which can sew at 1500 stitches per minute, which is one of the fastest speeds for an at-home sewing machine.

This is the perfect machine for heavier projects like a big quilt, as the machine can do quilt stitches at a record speed, saving you a lot of time. This Juki model has one straight stitch, which may be a bummer for some sewers, but it makes using the machine incredibly easy to use. This model comes with LED lights surrounding the machine that is bright and makes seeing even the darkest fabric and threads possible. This machine might be best suited for a beginner sewer or advanced sewer who mostly quilts, but either way, this Juki model won’t disappoint.

Pros
  • Sews at fast speed
  • High-quality metal and durable build
  • Really good for quilting
  • Bright LED lights
Cons
  • Heavy machine
  • Can be expensive for what you get
  • One type of stitch

Sample Customer Review… I am absolutely in love with this machine! I have had a Singer Curvy for basic sewing for the last 8 years, but I wanted to upgrade to a quilting machine. After much research, I chose the Juki as it had great reviews, and is sturdy enough to be able to sew canvas which I will need in the future. It has NOT disappointed! It is a very sturdy build (which means it does have some weight) which makes for incredibly smooth sewing. I’m used to a machine that vibrates so much my entire workspace bounces.

My table stays completely still. Setup was very simple when following the instructions, and it was fun to find all of the little “perks” this machine has that I didn’t know exist. Every issue that I have had with my Juki has been due to user error, and the one time I was SURE it wasn’t me, I contacted Juki support and had a technician solve my problem within hours of emailing. (Hint, the problem was me.) So I now have a very sturdy, high quality machine, and great customer service and support to back it up. Worth EVERY penny!

Pros
  • Easy to use for all types of sewers
  • Inexpensive
  • Great for layers
Cons
  • No automatic thread cutter
  • Doesn’t come with a cover

Sample Customer Review… I have used this machine almost daily since I bought it in October. It is by far one of the best machines I have ever owned. I have never owned a Brother before. I always bought Singer. This machine surpasses Singer by a large margin. It sews through multiple layers without even slowing down.

The stitch control is easy to change from one to another without fuss, he buttonholes work flawlessly, and you don”t have to change from one setting to another just to do basting-just lengthen the standard stitch you are using. I found out that this is the first machine Brother has made with a metal inner frame. I say they have a hit on their hands.

Pros
  • Not too expensive
  • 25-year warranty
Cons
  • Dull light
  • Mixed reviews

Sample Customer Review… I’m a professional seamstress, and have been using the same machine for the last 23 years. Last week I had to take my steady Eddy into the shop for the first time ever, and needed a replacement/backup ASAP. It would be easy for me to go completely overboard on a new machine, but we just bought a new house so the budget is cinched very tight right now.

So I ordered this one. It arrived right on time, I took it out of the box and strung some denim gold thread through it and went straight through a pair of jeans, like butter. It hung up and hummed just a little at the tripled over flatbed seam (12 layers of stretch denim), but did go right through after that and it did everything else beautifully. And the finished seam looked exactly like a factory hem.

The stitch length was dead on and the machine didn’t get cranky over that heavy topstitch thread like my regular machine. Then I got a piece of scrap purple satin and played around with the settings, I went up and down with bright white thread changing the stitch and the stitch length just to see what they all look like. One word “WOW”, she’s a dynamite little honey, and fast too. The scrap bit was so fun my daughters were fighting over it last night.

4. Janome-HD3000

This heavy-duty Janome model sewing machine is one of the best sewing machines for heavy fabrics. Although this sewing machine is not computerized and more traditional, it can certainly handle a variety of projects with its unique and useful features. This machine is 20 lbs and can stay stable on a machine without making a ton of noise. It is built to study and physically looks like it can take on a challenge. One of the unique features this machine has is a transparent bobbin plate so you can see the thread from the bobbin and see how long it can last.

Other features include 21 built-in stitches, a one-step buttonhole, reverse stitching, and a built-in needle threader.  This is the perfect heavy-duty sewing machine if you are looking to spend a little more than average. However, Janome is a well-known company and has a variety of sewing machines, but is best known for their high-quality heavy-duty models. The Janome HD3000 is no exception to the high-quality and durable type of sewing machine that Janome makes and will last you years to come.

Pros
  • Easy for beginners
  • Comes with a cover
Cons
  • Pricey

Sample Customer Review… I LOVE this machine! I sew a lot, sometimes many hours a day for days at a time. I stick fairly close to the basic stitches, straight, some zig-zag and buttonholes, so I really do not need a $3,000 machine that does 200 stitches. I have been using my last Singer for 30 years. I decided to treat myself to a new machine, and after reading a lot of reviews, bought this one. It was truly like going from a black and white TV to a new color flat-screen.

It is so easy to use! I love the storage compartment for the various attachments. It takes about two seconds to change a pressure foot. Although it is basic enough not to need much instruction for an experienced seamstress, the instruction booklet is extremely easy to follow. I usually do all of my hems by hand, but decided to try the blind hem available on the machine, when doing a set of drapes. It turned out beautifully, and of course took a fraction of the time. Highly recommend!

5. Singer 4411

Singer is known for producing top-quality sewing machines and this heavy-duty model will exceed your expectations. It is one of Singer’s best sewing machines for heavy fabrics. With a motor that is significantly stronger than your traditional sewing machine, you will not experience motor burnout. This model features 11 built-in stitches, four-foot presser options, an automatic four-step buttonhole, and a drop-in bobbin system.

This machine is easy for beginners to use, but still has plenty of advanced features for an experienced sewer. This machine can stitch up to 1100 stitches per minute, saving you lots of time for bigger projects. This is the perfect machine for quilters as it has features like the quilting guide to attach and ensure a top-quality end result stitch.

This is not an industrial level sewing machine, but it can still handle several layers of fabric very well for an at-home sewing machine. As long as you use the correct thread and needle with this machine it can sew fabrics like canvas twill, denim or jean, velcro, lightweight vinyl, drapery, or leather.

This machine can handle many thick fabrics but stay away from fabrics like sheepskin or thicker leathers, as this machine is not equipped to handle anything over ½ inch thick. This is the perfect machine for sewing heavier fabrics with ease and quickly from a brand, you can always trust.

Pros
  • Very affordable heavy duty machine
  • Fast sewing machine
  • Automatic features making it easy to learn
Cons
  • Not many stitches to choose from and all preset
  • Loud machine

Sample Customer Review… Oh wow, my machine arrived and I am impressed! I am a Singer girl from way back but this is a dream machine if you are looking for a workhorse! I held off writing my review until I had put it though the paces. I am not a light weight, sometimes sewer, I sew daily for several hours a day. I have made clothing, a quilt, repaired denim, and made doll clothes, all since my machine arrived! It handled all without a hiccup!

If you are looking for a pretty machine to set in your sewing room so you can say you have one, keep looking. This machine is not pretty. If you are looking for a workhorse, I high recommend this machine. All needed dials and knobs are within easy reach to change needed settings for each project, it’s a breeze to thread and wind bobbins, the reverse lever is a dream! It’s right where a serious sewer needs it! I have used the free arm several times!

I confess, I have not put a zipper in, nor have I used the button hole feature but I have had Singers in the past that work the same way so I am confident this will be no exception. Love, love, love the machine! Thanks you Singer and Amazon!

6. Juki TL-2010Q

When looking for a machine that is very precise, this is the one for you! With white LED lights, sub tension mechanism and a speed control slider it makes the job easy when it comes to precision. The automatic needle threader allows a quick threading service without a struggle. This machine is portable and contains a lockstitch system. The only downside when it comes to this machine is that it is not a long arm machine.

Pros
  • Works fast
  • Smooth
  • Sturdy
Cons
  • Not a long arm machine
  • Poor user manual

What a dream machine. I needed a straight stitch for piecing and the ability to quilt including free motion quilting. This is the machine. It is substantial. With a larger harp area, it is easy to see what you quilt. The table helps support larger items. It has a couple of more steps to thread than my Singer, but it was not difficult. I like the bobbin that loads from the side. The auto trim is neat. It snips top and bottom threads and doesn’t lose the bobbin thread.

I am finding this to be a great feature. This is really a workhorse machine. The stitch is consistent and it feeds the piecing very well. The feed dogs take the fabric easily. I am really falling in love with this machine already. I debated on the price, but after quilting a lap quilt, which would have cost over $100 at the quilters, I feel it will pay for itself in no time. If this machine could talk it would say “Here, let me help you with that”. Love it!!

All of these features and more will help you customize your sewing projects and leave you with high-quality end results on heavier projects that may include quilting or leather-work. Either way, this machine is fully equipped and ready to help you in all of your sewing projects.

Pros
  • Affordable
  • Easy to use
  • 25-year warranty
Cons
  • Bobbin system can be tricky at first
  • Speed can be hard to control

Sample Customer Review… Was sewing perfectly within 5 minutes of opening the shipping box! The “automatic” needle threader is amazing, and routing the thread couldn’t be simpler. I was concerned about some of the negative reviews that said this machine isn’t heavy-duty, but I was able to effortlessly sew through 7 layers of medium-weight denim without using a denim needle.

The stitch selection covers anything I might have need for (and more, I’m sure), and the auto-buttonhole function is pretty cool. I’m not a hardcore sewing aficionado, but when you need a good sewing machine, nothing else will really do. This machine, with proper care and use, should last for many years of service.

8. Janome HD1000

This machine has the same features as higher priced machines but for a portion of the price! With 14 built in stitches and one buttonhole, this allows you to do anything. It has a heavy duty aluminum body to ensure the sturdiness of this machine while working.  Included is a handy threading guide that makes the machine very easy to use. There is also an easy access storage tray that makes it especially easy to store your tools.

Pros
  • Very reliable
  • Works fast
  • Very easy to work
Cons
  • Big and bulky

Sample Customer Review…I am loving it so far!!!!! It has been many years since I have not only had a sewing machine, but had one which was easy to use. I previously had a different brand of machine, which I was never able to get to work properly and only provided me with countless nights of frustration before I finally got rid of it. I don’t even think I was ever able to finish a project on it.

After much research I finally settled on purchasing this machine. So far it has served me very well and I have already completed two projects on it (both of them were bags). I am looking forward to my next project (curtains).

This machine was very easy to set up and get running from the get go and I have already tested it out on denim and it had no issues! The machine is very simple to use and is well built. I also appreciated that the instruction manual was very well put together and easy to understand! This made setting it up a very smooth process and makes it so much easier to look up information when it is needed.

I would recommend this machine to anyone! It is worth spending the money on! I look forward to many years with this machine and hope I will never need to buy a new one, but if I do it will for sure be a Janome.

9. Janome Industrial-Grade Sewing Machine

With both an aluminum interior frame and exterior body this machine is equipped to deal with the toughest fabrics. The installed bobbin system helps ensure the machine doesn’t jam. This machine comes with access to removable storage compartments which convert the machine into a free arm tool. It also comes with 14 present stitches and a four step buttonhole setting which is already programmed into the machine. If you are a more advanced sewer, this is the perfect machine for you!

Pros
  • Reliable
  • Great stitch tension
  • Sturdy
Cons
  • Heavy
  • Hard to transport

Sample Customer Review…I don’t usually write reviews but I have decided to share my experience with this machine so far. I have had this sewing machine for about 2 months. I have just gotten back into the field of fashion design after many years. I have sewn 45 samples of lingerie on this machine in about 35 days. This is an excellent sewing machine. It is durable and up to the task of being in a design studio. I have a Singer, a vintage Kenmore, an industrial Juki straight stitch, Sailrite Ultrafeed LSZ 1 and 2 sergers.

I love the Janome HD1000. It is a basic, reliable machine, especially for those that do a lot of sewing. My electronic Singer sewing machine was much more expensive than the Janome, has more decorative stitches than the Janome, is heavier than the Janome, but cannot compete with the Janome in terms of durability. I have never recommended a product on Amazon but I do recommend the Janome HD1000 for those that want a strong, lightweight sewing machine.
