Brother ST531HD

Quality Brother ST531HD Review

Most of you have been searching for the Brother ST531HD review for a while. Well now, you can finally read it. This model makeup is very unique, and lots of attention to detail. It is hard to describe, but let’s just say it looks better than many of the other models around. However, there are many hidden features under the “hood” that you may have never heard of.

The Brother ST531HD is an excellent machine for those who believe that a sewing machine’s power depends on the number of stitches that it can provide. The machine contains 53 stitches in all. Decorative, basic, and even some rare ones are all included in this model.

Brother ST531HD review had to begin with this positive element, solely because it is one of the most essential elements that the machine provides.

As you can tell from the picture, the Brother ST531HD is made of plastic. Look deeper, however, and you can see metal; all the main components and frames are made of metal.

The bedplate uses a bit of a stronger type of metal than other parts of the machine. This part is important if you want a machine that can be used for difficult tasks. Feel free to use this machine anywhere you want for any reason.

The Brother ST531HD comes with a generous package: 6 presser feet which include buttonhole, zipper, straight zigzag, and others. All parts can be swapped in a matter of seconds.

This machine is great when you are in a hurry, and you want to complete a task quickly. This makes the ST531HD the perfect model for more difficult tasks.

Should You Oil The Brother ST531HD By Yourself?

Buyers should NEVER oil the Brother ST531HD. To make sure that your machine doesn’t get damaged, it is best to let an expert oil it if need be.

The manufacturer should have thoroughly oiled the machine at the time of purchase; that is, you should never have the need to oil it at home. If you have problems with it, such as unusual noise, or the handwheel not turning as it should, stop using the machine immediately and get in touch with your local authorized dealer or the nearest authorized service center that you can find.

How to Use the Brother ST531HD

Now that you have been introduced to Brother ST531HD, you will now learn how to use it.

It is easy to turn the machine on; all you need to do is plug it in and turn on the switch. This will turn the sewing light on.

After you have turned the sewing light on, you must wind the thread around the bobbin. After you have done that, you can start your sewing. Just make sure the bobbins that you use are specifically designed for this model; otherwise, the model won’t work right.

To start, you must first put the bobbin on the winder shaft and push to the right. Once you have done that, you must thread the spool onto the spool pin and get the thread hooked to the guides as instructed in the manual.

Make sure you follow the diagram that comes at the top of the machine when you are wrapping the thread around the pre-tension disks and attaching it to the bobbin. This will help to ensure that you are going in the right direction (this might be clockwise or counterclockwise).

Finally, push down on the presser foot until you get the thread rolling around the bobbin.

The feature that users tend to have the most trouble with is switching between SS1 and SS2 stitching patterns. This feature can be confusing for people who are just beginning to learn how to use this product. It is probably the biggest disadvantage of this model.

Before you do anything else with the Brother ST531HD, always place the needle up; this is to prevent the needle from being damaged. You can do this easily; just the back wheel counterclockwise.

Once you have done that, turn the stitching length dial left, past where it feels like you have turned it as far as it will go. A little more force may be necessary to get it turned Once you have done that, you will have selected the SS2 setting.

Once you have done that, you can pick whichever pattern you like with the pattern selection dial.

To reverse stitch, all you need to do is hold the reverse lever down, while simultaneously pressing the foot lever. Be sure to keep the lever down throughout the whole reverse stitch operation. Once you release this lever, the model is going to go back to sewing regularly.

Also, keep in mind, you will not be able to adjust the pressure of the foot controller; you will have to get used to it.

Eventually, you will need to replace the needle. Either it will get worn out, or you will need a different needle for the specific type of fabric that you are going to be sewing. The process of replacing a needle is easy, but don’t forget to switch the machine off when doing so; this will help to protect your fingers.

Brother ST531HD – Notable Pros and Cons

Notable Pros

Many Useful Stitches

The Brother ST531HD has more stitches than most other models, which is a great advantage for seasoned sewers. As mentioned above, it contains 53 built-in stitches. It is easy to select which one you want to use; just turn a dial on the back of the machine. Additionally, there are 3 dials at the top that permit you to set not only the stitch’s length and width but also the thread’s tension. YMetal frame – This sewing machine can last a long time. Metal frames tend to last longer than ones made of plastic. Plus, having a frame made of metal reduces the chances of the machine jerking around when you are using a high speed in your sewing.

Metal Finger Guard

As the name implies, this is to keep you from hurting your finger. The finger guard is a wonderful feature of this brand. Many people who have used older brands have hurt their fingers when learning to sew. Imagine the pain and frustration they went through while trying to sew. And it is not just the needle or the machine that can hurt your finger; sometimes, the needle can break and the thread can get into your finger. If that happens, it is going to be painful to pull the thread out.

Free Arm

Another great feature of this model is that it comes with a free arm. A free arm makes for a smaller sewing area when you need to sew parts of clothing that are difficult to reach. This feature can help if you are sewing shirt sleeves, pants, or cuffs.

This makes the feature particularly useful if you are sewing baby clothes; those clothes are small and more difficult to sew than clothing for older people. When you are not using the free arm for sewing, you can store your accessories in it, and they will be available when you need them. To open the storage case, all you need to do is swing the flatbed lid toward you; there’s your storage case.

800 Stitches Per Minute

Unlike most brands, the Brother ST531HD tells you the maximum speed of the machine: 800 stitches per minute. This is a pretty good speed for many tasks you might perform with this model. This speed is a bit more than other models offer and is made possible by the motor and precision needle systems. You can sew up to 6 layers of fabric with this model with the maximum speed.

Notable Cons

Does Not Use Leather Very Well

Although the machine is advertised as being heavy-duty, you can only use needles up to size 16 for this model. You might need higher-size needles if you are using really dense leather. To be fair, size 16 is great if you are using really thin leather. However, if the only fabric that you will ever use is leather, this machine is definitely not the right model for you. Using thick layers of leather for this type of machine will jam the needle. The needle will jam, and you will be sorely frustrated.

Frustrating for Beginners

Beginners are likely to have a hard time with the Brother ST531HD and all the different functions. It will be hard for them to figure out all those functions, and they are in for a frustrating experience if they choose this model. This machine is recommended only for people who have been sewing for a long time and have become excellent at it.

Machine is Hard to Carry Around

Despite the advantages of the metal listed above, metal is heavier than plastic; this makes the machine harder to carry around. If you want a machine that you can carry around with you wherever you go, the Brother ST531HD is probably not the model for you.

No Wide Table

There is no wide table to use for big projects. If you want to try some big sewing projects, this is probably not the model for you.

Hard to Choose a Sewing Pattern

It is a lot harder to choose a sewing pattern with the Brother ST531HD machine than with other models. You might end up damaging the presser foot, needle, or fabric if you forget to raise the needle position. Remember to turn the handwheel either toward you or counterclockwise when you pick your pattern.

No Automatic Thread Cutter

The Brother ST531HD does not come with an automatic thread cutter. This can be annoying. Although it has a built-in manual cutter that works really well, it is a bit high up from the pressure foot and some sewers may not enjoy the idea of a manual cutter. In this case, it’s time to get out the scissors.

No Start/Stop Button

This machine does not have a start and stop button on it. If you want to have a machine with this function on it, you might want to consider trying either the Singer 7258 or the Brother CS6000i instead. However, if you decide to try one of these two, keep in mind that you might NOT be able to sew six layers of fabric all at once, as you can with the Brother ST531HD. So there is a trade-off.

This basically covers all you need to know about the Brother ST531HD. It is not easy to find a recommendation, as this model is quite a popular one. This is a great sewing machine especially for seasoned sewers, and the results of the tests performed on this model were excellent.

This model has a plethora of stitch types to offer, a metal frame, and wonderful precision. Professionals, in particular, will love this model and the advantages that it provides.
