Top 27 Gifts For Engineers

1. Engineering Computation Paper

[amazon box=”B07TJTW96W” description=” ” rating=”4.7″]

These paper pads are made specifically for engineers, and I guarantee they never have enough of them. Make sure they always have a notepad handy in their car, bag, home, and office.

Sample Customer Review…This is a great pad for technical class notes. The front is unlined but you can still see the faint grid pattern from the back page so that helps me keep my writing straight. The back of each page contains grid lines for graphing or drawing. Very handy. Although the paper is thick, it is of high quality. I am able to use a broad bib fountain pen on this paper which bleeds through on ordinary copy paper and unexpectedly this engineering paper did not bleed through! Very impressive! This paper is pricey but definitely well worth it!

As an engineering student, my professors often request that assignments be done on this kind of paper. I thought it was dumb at first, but something about engineering paper is just correct when working out problems. I will note that with a fresh pad, the first few pages don’t tear well, but that goes away pretty quickly. I will always recommend this pad to anyone doing engineering or math problems.

2. Metal Puzzles

[amazon box=”B071JGWTWQ” description=” ” rating=”4.5″]

These puzzles make awesome desk toys for any tinkering hands. These toys improve problem-solving and 3D visualizing, all while feeling like a fun toy. Any curious mind will not be able to put these down, which makes them great for fidgeters.

Sample Customer Review…Exactly as expected, seem strong enough that I can’t complain at all, fun little puzzles you can keep in your pocket on the go if you get bored on the bus or subway or waiting for a meeting to start and don’t want to be on your phone like everyone else! some are easier than others but all are great brain stimulation, shows how to solve each one.

This was the quietest Christmas morning on record because I put these in everyone’s stockings. Everyone got so focused on these that they were reluctant to open other presents! The conversation was quiet because everyone was so focused, but we were still talking and working together on these. We were taking turns and asking for help. It was the most cooperative I’ve seen my family in years! Everyone from my 60 y/o dad to my teen-aged brothers were obsessed. Highly recommend.

3. A Multifunction Plier Tool

[amazon box=”B07MJVZWYS” description=” ” rating=”4.6″]

Engineers can fix anything…with the right tools of course. Get them this super functional leatherman’s multi-tool to keep them prepared and ready to fix anything. Equipped with knives, pliers, screwdrivers, wire cutters, a file, saw, and a ruler so they can be the hero for any job.

Sample Customer Review…I was in the market for a multi-tool and figured I’d give this one a shot once I came across it. I’m usually apprehensive of non-brand name products but I was pleasantly surprised.

This is a very built multi-tool that includes everything I needed!. I haven’t even used most of the functionality yet but I can already see this will last a long time.

The screwdriver, knife, pliers, and bottle opener have been great so far, and I’d recommend this to anyone looking for a multi-tool.

4. Raspberry Pi Kit

[amazon box=”B07V5JTMV9″ description=” ” rating=”4.8″]

Raspberry Pi is the cornerstone for the tinkering community. Programmers and coders will run wild with this computer.  Connect lights, buttons, motors, switches, audio and so much more with this cheap, but powerful computer. The home projects are literally limitless with this gift.

Sample Customer Review…I got tired of the energy footprint associated with running a PC all day every day for my Home Assistant installation, so I moved to RPi.

This kit is more than you really need, and you can certainly buy all the parts individually for considerably less money, but it was nice to get perfect-fitting heat sinks, a little fan, and a case with it. Four gigs are plenty for my application, no need for the eight gig model.

Raspberry Pi is a joy. Get two, they’re small. 🙂

5. A Robot Arm Toy

[amazon box=”B0017OFRCY” description=” ” rating=”4.1″]

If your engineer doesn’t have much mechanical experience, this robot arm is a great way to get them started with robotics and programming practice. This one can be controlled with a console controller, mouse, or smartphone, making it perfect for showing off to all their friends. They will find loads of useful (and silly) projects for their robot arm.

Sample Customer Reviews…Our 16-year-old teenage son is interested in robotic engineering. We decided to give him a little taste of what that involves. This robotic arm was the perfect beginner robot, a great value for the money. Our son had it picking up lightweight items that same evening (took him a couple of hours to assemble). He had a blast with it, trying different-sized objects. We also bought the cd to perform advanced programming to this robotic arm (although, he hasn’t tried that yet). The pride my son had after accomplishing assembly and having it work exactly as described was amazing. Highly recommend this item.

6. V8 Model Engine Kit

[amazon box=”B07QCQNKG7″ description=” ” rating=”4.3″]

If they have any interest in cars or engines, this V8 model kit is the perfect project. Once this awesome-looking model is complete, it actually works! They will be ecstatic to display this model.

Sample Customer Review…The kit is super fun to build and great for older kids and adults. I would strongly advise that if you buy this kit, you locate the two bags of springs and separate them as soon as you open the box. Mine got all discombobulated and I tried to locate replacement springs and could not. The Company was kind enough to replace the entire kit. They, of course, get a very strong recommendation from me.

My 15 year old loves to put together things but has outgrown Legos and into more complicated things like robotics/electronics. He has an interest in all things rotating/gears etc and got right to work putting this together. Even though he was a bit old for the product, he really enjoyed watching it come together and it’s now sitting on his desk and a desk/fidget item. He has ADD and this kind of thing really helps his focus and he was satisfied to see it all together. Price was maybe a bit high but worth it to get him off his Xbox and has something to remind him of his love of mechanics/engineering/robotics.

7. Tesla Patent Prints

[amazon box=”B01H0JJ4JG” description=” ” rating=”4.7″]

A nice workspace is vital for any success.  Add some vintage-looking prints to their workspace to liven up the office or any other room. Any Tesla fan or electrical engineer will smile at these industry-changing blueprints.

Sample Customer Review…As a huge Tesla fan, I know these are going to be some of my favorites pieces in my office. They are printed on heavy (slightly glossy) paper but are printed to look like parchment. Very nice quality and seem very durable.

Excellent decor addition for engineers, electrical, science fans, Steampunk.

8. Makey Makey

[amazon box=”B008SFLEPE” description=” ” rating=”4.6″]

Even simpler than a Raspberry Pi, the Makey Makey is a controller that can be plugged into anything with an electrical current. Yes, that included bananas. This small machine plugs into your computer and is programmed to the keys, so when you attach the included wires to, say, a banana, your computer just thinks you’re pressing a button on the keyboard. Anything you can do on your computer ( including things you can code ) can now be controlled with just about anything!

Sample Customer Review…It’s a really simple idea, but very well executed. If you are a rookie in electronics it’s an amazing kit, if you are kind of advanced in electronics you may find this a little high valued but is still reasonable.

The quality of the board is excellent, and what I liked the most is that is open source so if you have kind of advanced electronics/programming skills you will find that this is more than just a fancy key maker.

9. She Engineers

[amazon box=”1732070105″ description=” ” rating=”4.7″]

Engineering is one of the most male-dominated industries. This book breaks down the industry and goes beyond social commentary and gender issues, I’d recommend giving this career guide a look through even if you’re not a she, or anywhere within the engineering field.

Sample Customer Review…The information that this book contains is not only for female engineers, it is very useful for any female that works (or is looking to work) in any male-dominated industry. It gives you a very clear understanding of how to overcome this difficulty and succeed in such a field.

The recommendations could also be followed by anybody who wants to become an expert in their industry, not just females, therefore this book is a great read for anyone who would like to advance in their career.

I would mention too, that it’s written in a way that makes it really hard to put it down once you have started reading!

10. Solder Suckers

[amazon box=”B0739LXQ6N” description=” ” rating=”4.4″]

Your engineer probably doesn’t have this handy little sucker in their toolbox, but they will use it every time from now on. This small vacuum sucks up debris from soldering to keep a spotless workbench. It can be used with one hand so you can solder and vacuum at the same time.

Sample Customer Review…Based on the reviews, I thought I’d be able to remove a few bits of solder before the tip would melt off – I’ve been using one of these for like two weeks now for desoldering components from boards and I’ve still got two of the three that I received unopened in the bag, and the first one is still going strong.

Overall good sucking power, did my desoldering work satisfactorily. The tip seems to be quite a heat resistant (I was using 350F). Every time the excess solder is pushed out by a metal rod in the middle when you load the pump, kind of self-cleaning.

11. Engineering Scale Ruler

[amazon box=”B01LY2BJ1G” description=” ” rating=”4.7″]

If they are still using regular, plastic rulers, they are missing out big time. The feeling of using high-quality scale rulers really makes work feel like a breeze.

Sample Customer Review…I use this thing daily, maybe even hourly while at work. I bought it almost 2 years ago, has not faded, no issues whatsoever. It’s lightweight, but not in a cheap way like the plastic ones. It’s unmistakable, can’t miss it, color coding means it is easy to read, and easily identifiable as mine in the office.

This is exactly what I needed and the fact it’s made out of aluminum is awesome. Worth every penny. I’m going to pick a few more up to keep around the shop.

12. Marble Mechanical Kit

[amazon box=”B07P17N45H” description=” ” rating=”4.6″]

This is one of my personal favorite DIY desk ornaments. This marble track is fun and easy to put together, and addicting to play with. This model is made with real wood and full of different mechanics to build and admire.

Sample Customer Review…The best “engineering puzzle” I’ve ever had. Many kinds of mechanical complexity all built out of a few flat boards of wood. Beautiful and ingenious. Assembly was easy for anyone who has built any kind of model from parts and instructions before. This is not a starter project. But the instructions were far better than any other I’ve seen. All the parts were clearly labeled, the subassemblies were labeled on their main part, the parts were logically gathered on the popout boards. All the little tabs held up, I managed not to break ANYTHING. I had to use the sandpaper and wax in a few places as indicated in the instructions, and I had to glue 3 joints that were a little too loose, also as the instructions said I might. As others note, the balls tend to climb the escalator in pairs but I like that, I like the way they follow the two distinct paths back down in parallel.

13. Level Cuff Links

[amazon box=”B00PL2AECG” description=” ” rating=”4.6″]

These links are perfect for the formal occasion with any builder. Jazz up their formal attire by showing off their love of tinkering with these working-level cuff links.

Sample Customer Review…These cuff links are great! They’re well constructed from nice heavy materials. Not flimsy junk, but really durable steel. My initial purchase was the green ones, but I’mgoing back for the red ones now!

Great cuff links. Look just like they do in the picture. Look even better in my shirt sleeves!

14. 101 Things I Learned in Engineering School

[amazon box=”1524761966″ description=” ” rating=”4.6″]

Even seasoned professionals could take a few notes out of this engineering book. The main appeal of this book is that it uses real-world examples to tackle common problems, questions, and various solutions. For a book titled “What I learned in school,” is incredibly applicable and insightful.

Sample Customer Review

I have been expecting this book since it was announced in early 2013. As a prospective graduate of 2013, I hoped this would give me some insight or a refresher of what I had learned during my four years in Engineering School. I’m glad to say this book, while not an earth-moving revelation it helps to keep conversations interesting and brings smiles and funny anecdotes to the faculty and teaching body.

I really like the small format of the book, perfect for a small coffee table or bookshelf, definitely a book to keep at hand!

15. Extraordinary Uses for Ordinary Things

[amazon box=”1621454363″ description=” ” rating=”4.7″]

If you have a crafty engineer — or even a wannabe engineer — this book is loaded with unique household projects. This book is great for anyone looking for small crafts or interested in reusing everyday objects.

Sample Customer Review…Excellent buy! Especially in today’s economic times…it’s great to be able to find inexpensive and for the most part, environmentally friendly ways to get things done around the house. Easy to use, everything is broken down by the product and its uses, but you can use the index in the back to look up a problem and the corresponding pages with solutions.

I am very happy with this purchase, especially since I now have an excellent solution to stinky sink drains (baking soda and vinegar). There are multiple others…my mom and my best friend are already asking to borrow this!

16. 3D Pen

[amazon box=”B081C946ZJ” description=” ” rating=”4.3″]

One of the hardest skills to master for engineers and builders is 3D visualization. With practice, this skill can be strengthened, and having tools like a 3D pen can be tremendously helpful when trying to put together a project. Regular 2D drawings just don’t compare to what you’re able to see and understand with a 3D tool, and it’s much cheaper and easier than expensive 3D software.

Sample Customer Review…Was a tad bit worried about the price, but after hours of continuous use it runs flawlessly and is an absolute blast, I also use it to fill in later distortions in my 3D prints as well as build up material in parts that get sanded down too far.

Overall a perfect product for The insanely good price (in my opinion)

Only one thing to be mindful of is the tip of the pen, it gets incredibly hot and therefore I would not recommend children using this until they have parental supervision

17. Cut Proof Gloves

[amazon box=”B01M36AHMR” description=” ” rating=”4.5″]

Nicks and cuts are pretty common when working with many tools and materials; cut down on the band-aids with some cut-resistant gloves.

Sample Customer Review…Use these gloves for sharpening and maintaining the household kitchen knives, my machetes, and my sword collection. As of right now, not as much as a nick, so I’m very pleased with them so far. They are comfortable and breathable enough to keep your hands from sweating. I’ve even used them for yard work. They have held up well so far and they really give you an added feeling of confidence that you’re not going to slice your hands up while working with scissors, razor knives, pruners, or any other utensil with a blade or sharp edges, however, you still have to be careful around thorny plants like roses or orange trees, but this is not a problem with the gloves as they are for keeping your hands safe from sharp edges, not pointy plants. Would definitely recommend and will buy more to replace these when they get worn out.

18. Blue Light Blocking Glasses

[amazon box=”B07R4SG77T” description=” ” rating=”4.6″]

Save their eyes, not only from flying objects around the workbench but also from the harmful blue lights that come from computer and phone screens. Blue light is what causes eye strain and damage, especially if they look at screens for long periods of time. These glasses have special lenses that cut back the amount of blue light that comes through, reducing the strain and headaches of looking at screens.

Sample Customer Review…I was leary while making my selection because you don’t always know the quality or function of what you will get, but I chose right! They actually work! I highly recommend these glasses to anyone who works under fluorescent lighting or stares at a computer screen all day, I noticed the difference almost immediately and especially at the end of the day when I had no headache or that drained feeling I often walk out with. They are pretty and I got a lot of compliments on them too! Well made, nice, and light. I would definitely purchase them again and I have created quite the buzz at the office. Lastly, I will say this, I make it a point to prioritize my health and wellbeing, so $21 dollars to protect my eyes from actually needing real glasses and damaging my vision is beyond well worth it!

19. Floating Planter

[amazon box=”B07VLTWXP1″ description=” ” rating=”4.1″]

Why get a regular plant pot when you can get them this floating magnetic planter? Any nerd will love having this decoration in their office. It’s such to get noticed and complimented by all their co-workers.

Sample Customer Review…Very cool attention grabber! It takes some practice finding the sweet spot to make it float, just use two hands and feel it. I’m pretty sure every time the floating planter makes contact with the base, it resets and you have to push the power button again.

A little pricey but 100% does not feel/look like a cheap knock-off.

Works great! This a great gift for yourself or for a friend. Works flawlessly and as described.

20. A Beer Making Kit

[amazon box=”B001BCFUBU” description=” ” rating=”4.4″]

They love making things, they love beer? Give them the gift of making their own craft beer! The brewing process is fascinating to learn about and experiment with. This project will keep them busy and wanting to make more. Cheers!

Sample Customer Review…For somebody who has never made their own beer, this is perfect. It really is a discouraging turn-off to go to the local homebrew supply store and be told that if you want to make your own beer, you must buy $125 or more just in equipment to get started, and that doesn’t include the cost of ingredients. Mr. Beer simplifies the process and gives you something that works well for less than half the price. I just tried my first batch, and I am quite pleased by the smooth and bold taste that I got. This is a great way to make your own beer in an environment in which you are cramped for space, which those expensive kits demand lots of. Using this doesn’t make you less of a homebrewer, it just means you are frugal and can’t necessarily afford lots of space for making your own beer. Simply put, this kit is great.

21. Geek Dad

[amazon box=”1592405525″ description=” ” rating=”4.5″]

Engineer parent or spouse? This book is full of ideas that get the kids involved (or not!). This book explores the interests and imaginations of kids and adults alike with fun guides and geeky projects that will bring the family together.

Sample Customer Review…Perfect for families looking for creative and amazing projects, Geek Dad had me bookmarking favorites to try right away. Many involve science in a fun, lightweight way. I can’t imagine a child who wouldn’t be excited by the prospect of some of these activities: the ultimate outdoor obstacle course, the light-up nighttime kite, the finger-painting with windup toys. The directions make each step simple and understandable.

Each project has a table that describes the concept, lists the tools and materials needed, and gives ratings for cost, difficulty, duration, and reusability. Costs are from $0 up to over $100. Difficulty levels begin with primary-school kids up to high school age. Duration is from 0 to 15 minutes up to 3 hours or longer. Reusability ranges from one-time-only use to “good forever.”

22. A Tactical Bag

[amazon box=”B07YJ65XJP” description=” ” rating=”4.8″]

All these tools are not easy to carry around; pretty much any engineer could benefit from a nice tactical backpack. Normal backpacks are often open and small, but these large bags are full of all the pockets and space they need to keep all those gears and gadgets.

Sample Customer Review…Wow! I was so thankful we decided on this backpack. First of all, it is so nice to have such amazing customer service. It really means everything. This bag is so well made & is very high quality. This one was actually for my husband. He uses backpacks to take everything back & forth to work. He goes through several bags a year. So we were looking for something different that would last. This is going to be perfect. Honestly, I am also about to buy 2 more for my daughters in 6th & 9th grade. I wish we would have known about these sooner. We had have had to buy 3 backpacks for them in about 4 months. The regular backpacks just do not hold up at all. I definitely know where we will get ours from now on. I know these aren’t technically for school but if You are looking for something sturdy that won’t be ripping & looks like they are made to last. These are the best! If You are looking at these just go for it. You won’t be sorry. Thank You!

23. Echo Dot

[amazon box=”B07FZ8S74R” description=” ” rating=”4.7″]

I can’t tell you how many times the Echo Dot in the garage has come in handy. Full hands? Too far away from the light switch? Need a reminder to check the cookies? Or just want to blast some tunes in the office? The Echo dot is an awesome tool to have around.

Sample Customer Review…Already had one and ordered 2 more because we love it so much. We use them primarily to listen to music and the sound is great. It’s also extremely helpful in the kitchen, when your hands are messy, you can set timers, add items to your grocery list, ask questions about ingredients, recipes, etc without stopping to wash your hands (or trying to type/scroll with your knuckles). You can even connect it to answer or make phone calls. Added bonus, Alexa will call your phone for you so you can find it if you’ve misplaced it…again.

The additional dots were purchased for the bathroom where all great ideas used to go to die. Now Alexa can save them as notes. I used to be leery about being listened to by who knows who but if someone wants to listen to my dinner prep karaoke, that’s their problem!

24. A Rechargeable Lighter

[amazon box=”B07TYPMD53″ description=” ” rating=”4.5″]

This was my best stocking stuffer this last Christmas, and I believe everyone should ditch the disposable lighters filling our landfills and use this way more stylish lighter. The ‘flame’ itself will sell anyone on rechargeable lighters.

Sample Customer Review…First, we rubbed 2 sticks together, then we invented the match, then along came the lighter, and now there is the arc. I got very tired of buying those click lighters to light my candles with. A lot of them are not refillable and so you’re constantly replacing them. And the ones that are refillable, I can never find the stuff to actually fill them without having to order them online. I was actually on Amazon about to purchase more regular lighters when this particular one popped up as a suggestion. I read the reviews read the specs and decided why not. It got here very quickly and in perfect condition. I expected the battery to be dead when it arrived and I would have to charge it, but the battery was only half dead. So I was able to test it right away. I like how easy it is to use, I didn’t even read the instructions and figured out how to use it right away. It works perfectly, the battery life seems to last a very long time, and it’s pretty cool to see the actual arc itself. It comes with a charging cord. I will be buying more of these as holiday presents, I think they’ll make a great gift and very unique.

25. A Wallet Multi-tool

[amazon box=”B00JJVBGU4″ description=” ” rating=”4.6″]

This multi-tool is the most low-profile handyman tool out there; it literally fits in your wallet just like a credit card. Now wherever they carry their wallet, they can have their prized tools with them as well.

Sample Customer Review…Definitely helpful to have on hand! The ninja is small and slim but punches above its weight class in terms of usefulness. The tools are all things you might find yourself searching through a drawer for and are useful in a pinch. You obviously aren’t going to be able to construct a deck with anything on this credit card-sized device, but it fits comfortably in your wallet and will help you open a beer or tighten a screw.

The coolest feature that I couldn’t find on most other similar products was the credit card phone stand. It is great for planes and other travel applications (I haven’t had trouble bringing this on a plane anywhere I have traveled, FYI).

26. Rite In The Rain Weatherproof Top Spiral Notebook

[amazon box=”B01MQFDNSH” description=” ” rating=”4.8″]

An engineer’s notes can face some pretty wild elements, this weatherproof notebook protects them. These pages can stand up to water, mud, snow, grease, and oil! Not to mention the wire binding is impact resistance so it won’t lose its shape or its pages. And, for bonus points, the pages are recyclable (unlike most weatherproof pages). When the notes are no longer needed, just toss them in the recycling with all your other paper.

Sample Customer Review…After growing tired of notebooks that disintegrate in my pocket, I did a lot of research and decided to try these. I always keep a notebook in my pocket and in my pack, and even if they don’t get wet, most other notebooks just start tearing apart.

These notebooks are a whole different story. I’ve carried these in my pocket and in my pack for months now, using them regularly, and they magically still look practically new. The pages don’t fall out, the covers don’t tear off. Even when I get sweaty or get rained on, the notebook stays intact. I absolutely love these notebooks. I’ve even held a page from this notebook under a running faucet to test the water resistance, and the paper was fine.

There is one caveat; you have to use the right kind of pen with this paper. Certain cheap ball-point pens and gel pens don’t work well. I always carry a Fisher Space Pen and a Sharpie with me, and both of those work great with the paper in these notebooks. For me, having a notebook that won’t just fall apart after carrying it in my pocket for a few weeks is absolutely worth the trade-off.

27. 5 in 1 Engineer Ballpoint

[amazon box=”B01IUYGGFU” description=” ” rating=”4.4″]

A pen may feel like an obvious or boring choice, however, this pen is anything but. This 5-in-1 writes, screws, measures, levels, and has a stylus. This handy little tool does a lot without taking up a lot of room. Will it replace their toolsets? Of course not. But it will come in handy in those little everyday moments when you wish you had one of those five things. Not to mention the pen is stylish and certainly looks like something an engineer would have in their hand.

Sample Customer Review…Giving this to my son as a gift and have to say that I was pleasantly surprised. The pen has a metal barrel, giving it a good weight and balance. The rulers are a nice touch as he will be doing some drafting and may need to scale from time to time. The precision screwdriver is a nice touch for when he needs to tighten items, and the stylus is a great addition to his arsenal of tech gadgets. And I forgot to mention the bubble level, really good to have for you really never know when you’re going to have to make sure things are straight.

The pen is awesome, lots of compliments, and comes in handy especially the level, it’s easy to find refills, and this is actual metal.
