About Importing Music

The Apple Music Logo

It is important to understand that music files have to be in the form of an MP3 file; that is the form of any sound file. If your music is not in MP3 form, then your music will not work even if you follow the steps correctly.

You need to make sure that your music is properly downloaded and COPYRIGHT FREE. Plenty of online content gets taken down or flagged because it uses music that gets claimed for copyright violations. It’s important to do your research on the policies behind the music you wish to use in your videos. If you are unsure of whether or not it is okay to use a song, always take the safer option and not use the song at all or contact the owner of the song to get clear permissions.

The Mac Process

Step 1: Open a New or Existing Project

There has to be a place in iMovie where you wish to use your music. Once you open up a project and are in one, you can go to the top of the screen and select “file”. From there, a list of options will appear from which you should pick “import media”. This will allow you to select the music you downloaded onto your computer and bring it into your project for use.

Step 2: Drag into the Timeline

Now that you are in your project with the music already imported, all you have to do now is select the imported music you want to use and drag it into the timeline of your project.

Just click and hold onto one of the songs you imported and simply drag the mouse (or guide it on the trackpad if you are using a laptop) onto the timeline of your project. Just make sure you do not drag it onto a video clip or audio file that is already in your timeline. Make sure you drag your music into an area of the timeline that doesn’t change the position of the other video and audio files currently on your timeline. From there, you can edit the music file however you see fit! You’ve done it! You successfully added music to iMovie on your mac!

The Mobile Process

Step 1: Create or Open a Project

When you open the application, either hit the “+” button to make a new project or choose a project that already exists on your mobile device to start off with.

Step 2: Pick your Option for Importing

At this point, there are basically 2 options for bringing music to your project. The first option is clicking on the “+” button while in your project and then looking for the “audio” button. From there you can click on the “songs” button; it will appear as an option that will allow you to go through all the songs that are downloaded to your mobile Apple device. A variation of this would be selecting the “iCloud Drive” button after clicking on the “+” button to see all of the music in your iCloud storage to use instead of just the music on your specific mobile device.

The second option is to tap the button at the bottom of the screen that looks like a gear icon. From there, you can select the “Theme music” button which will allow you to use a variety of theme music that is provided by iMovie and isn’t copyrighted. This is extremely useful for those who cannot find and download music that is not copyright free. After selecting “theme music”, you can pick which option you want and it will be used in your timeline.
