When purchasing a laptop, the last thing that you’re probably thinking about is the keyboard. Huge mistake! Why Do I Need a Backlit Keyboard Laptop? Your keyboard is the part of your laptop that you’ll be most acquainted with, and it would be a shame if it hindered your productivity or even comfort. Take pride in your keyboard. Part of that includes having a backlit keyboard.
What is a backlit keyboard?
A backlit keyboard is a keyboard with light underneath the keys. With a backlit keyboard, the illuminated keys allow you to see your keyboard better in a low light environment or it could just add some flair to your setup.
A majority of backlit keyboards emit white light, but some offer more color options. Colorful backlit keyboards are generally found on gaming laptops. Depending on your laptop, you can also fine-tune the brightness levels of your backlit keyboard.
Does a Backlit Keyboard Kill Your Battery?
It may seem like a no-brainer that an additional feature such as light would kill your battery, but backlit keyboards won’t drain your battery as much as you think. A backlit keyboard will only affect your battery life by only 2-3%. You won’t even notice the difference. And with modern technology advancing, I’m sure that 2-3% will decrease in the future.
Why is a backlit keyboard better than a standard keyboard?
Backlit keyboards add a nice aesthetic to your laptop, but the main benefit of a backlit keyboard is the fact that you could use your laptop in areas with low light. For example, if you were taking an overnight flight, and everyone around you is sleeping, you wouldn’t want to turn on the overhead light to disturb others near you. A backlit keyboard gives you enough light to see your keyboard without disturbing the people around you.
Or maybe you’re a college student in your lecture class. What if the professor dims the lights to make the Powerpoint presentation more visible? You don’t want to strain your eyes to take down your notes. If you can’t type without looking at the keys, a backlit keyboard would become your new best friend in class.
Backlit Keyboards for Gamers
It’s no coincidence that a vast majority of Twitch streamers and gamers have backlit keyboards. LED-backlit keyboards are a staple for PC gamers today. You’ll find that gamers’ keyboards are often lit by colors such as red, green, blue, and more. Some keyboards are even fancy enough to feature multiple backlight colors in one. This feature is zoned backlighting.
With a zone backlit keyboard, you can assign different colors to specific keys. PC gamers are often engaged in virtual combat. Zoned backlighting helps simply the keyboard for them through visual division.
If you’re a gamer, you might assign a specific backlight for your movement keys, a specific backlight for your combat keys, and a specific backlight for your items. This will enhance your gaming experience and help you locate the keys you need faster.
Be careful when shopping for a zoned keyboard though. Not all zoned keyboards come with the ability to let you assign the backlight to whichever keys you like, some come with predetermined configurations.
Backlit Keyboards for Creatives
If you work with creative applications such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere Pro, or Adobe Illustrator, shortcuts are your best friend. Similar to how gamers use zoned backlights for their controls, you can use zoned backlighting to highlight your shortcuts.
Competitive industries such as graphic design and video editing often require a fast turnaround time. A backlit keyboard would give you an extra boost to your workflow.
Installing A Backlit Keyboard to Your Laptop
Unfortunately, laptops that don’t come with a backlit keyboard are often unable to upgrade. It would take an incredibly smart computer engineer to install this. Operating a backlit keyboard, not only requires the right components but also requires proper programming.
Taking apart your laptop is difficult and may also void your warranty. In addition to how difficult it is to take apart your laptop, you could even damage it, if you don’t know what you’re doing. Your best bet is to just buy an external keyboard that comes with a backlight. The next best option would be to purchase a laptop that comes pre-built with a backlight.
Backlit keyboards are all the rage for gamers, but can even be useful for creatives and other users, especially with zoned backlighting. Zoned backlighting could enhance your gaming experience, increase productivity and make your setup a little more exciting. Don’t worry about the backlit keyboard draining your battery life either. It will only affect your battery life by about 2-3%, and that number is decreasing as technology improves.
