1. Brother PQ1500SL Quilting and Sewing Machine

Brother PQ1500SL Sewing and Quilting Machine is the powerhouse for the expert sewers and quilters.

It is a heavy-duty sewing machine making it perfect for those starting their own business or offer services as a seamstress. It comes with an automatic needle trimmer and automatic needle threader that can save you precious time instead of doing it manually.

The Brother PQ1500SL sewing and quilting machine can handle every sewing task as well as the quilting need with ease. The machine is a straight stitch that could be used in a manufacturing unit as well because of the sewing speed that it’s given. Because it used a fast technique for needle threading, its ability to sew with a speed of 1,500 stitches per minute is what makes it one of the fastest sewing machines out there.

Also, the machine can make stitches as huge as 7mm with ease that comes with a sideloaded bobbin. On that note, this is a good choice if you have to make straight stitches because it only comes with 1 stitching option.

Specifications

  • Color: Wide Table
  • Dimensions: 7.9 x 12.6 x 19.3 in
  • Weight: 29.76 lbs
Pros
  • 1,500 stitches per minute
  • Precision pin feeding system
  • Includes everything you need to get started
Cons
  • May be difficult to work with
  • Expensive

Sample Customer Review… I bought this machine after doing a lot of research. I was looking for a quality and powerful straight stitch machine. I didn’t have room to invest in an industrial machine with a table so I started looking for a portable one. I know that this brother pq1500sl is designed as a quilting sewing machine. However, I did not buy it for that purpose. I make bags and purses. I have constructed several using this machine. I use fabric and faux leather. I invested in a straight stitch Teflon foot for this type of sewing. I use a larger needle and heavy thread and have had no problems whatsoever. I took my time and practiced a lot to get the tension right. Sews like a dream! The needle-down function is awesome and so is the knee lift bar!!! I absolutely love these features. I think this machine is well worth the money for me. I also checked out the Juki similar model. They were more money for basically the same type of machine. I have nothing against the Juki but for me, the brother was a better fit. I sew just about every day and this machine is the one I use now more than my other machines. With regular maintenance, it should last a very long time.

Brother XR9550PRW Computerized Sewing Machine is an amazing machine for intermediate sewists.

There are other features including an automatic needle threader, easy threading system, free arm, and drop feed for quilting. This is specifically designed for durability as well as the flexibility to enable you to craft unique and interesting projects for decorations.

Specifications

  • Color: White
  • Dimensions: 7.01 x 16.26 x 12.48 in
  • Weight: 19.42 lbs
Pros
  • 8 sewing feet included
  • Hard case and wide table
Cons
  • Not ideal to sew plush fabric or delicate fleece

Sample Customer Review… Great for beginners and experts alike. Very easy to use, and the manual is great when you run into any issues. All the pre-programmed stitches and provided presser feet are simple to use, including the monograms. Also does reasonably heavy-duty work- I used duck cloth canvas in as many as 4 layers and heavy-duty thread, with no issues, after getting the tension right (which the manual helps to resolve). Beats my old manual machine, hands down! And got it at a great price. I’m sure the similar brother machines are equally as good- so pick the one with the best price. PS the “case” is just a cover that does not attach to the machine. And there is no storage for the extension table or manual. I bought a rolling case at Joanne Fabric, which has been a fantastic addition. It holds everything, plus sewing supplies.

  • Weight: 13 lbs
Pros
  • 60 built-in stitches
  • Automatic needle threader

  • LCD display
Cons
  • Users claim there was an E6 error

Sample Customer Review… I sincerely heart this machine! I usually use this machine for making my own clothes, accessories (bags, home items, gifts, etc.) + shooting DIY video tutorials. In all scenarios, it has proven to be an excellent workhorse. The machine is lightweight, very user-friendly + comes with a generous amount of feet/accessories. If you have any doubts about using the machine, the user manual is seriously your best friend! It’s easy to be a little suspicious of the quality because of the lower price-point, but I would recommend this machine to both beginners + more advanced sewers that are in need of a reliable home machine.

Sample Customer Review… Perfectly packaged. All parts were securely maintained inside the shipping box. This model did it all. 50 stitches, free arm for sewing cuffs or sleeves, designer features for blind hems, zippers, overcasting edges, sewing on buttons, knits and stretch fabrics, twin needle topstitching, and more. 5. Brother XR3774 Sewing Machine

The Brother XR3774 Sewing Machine is a mechanical machine that is simply easy to set up and operate with very good ratings. It seems to be hard to find any particularly negative review on this Brother XR3774 sewing machine.

The most common comments under the Brother XR3774 sewing machine are the clear well-written instructions provided and the DVD is very useful.

These sewing machines come in at a reasonably good price which is suitable for beginners and for those who have some experience with sewing. If you are someone looking to do more advanced sewing projects then this may not be the one for you.

There are limitations when it comes to a large number of stitches or features. However, if you are a beginner then this sewing machine is the one for you due to its easy to understand and operate.

This is a lightweight machine that makes it quite portable and has enough features for beginners to have some experience to grow with the machine.

Specifications

  • Color: Wide Table
  • Dimensions: 15.3 x 5.8 x 12 in
  • Weight: 15.87 lbs
Pros
  • Easy to use
  • 37 built-in stitches
  • Extended free arm and table
  • One-step buttonhole
Cons
  • No automatic bobbin winder

Sample Customer Review… I love this machine. My old machine was a Singer and I had problems with it since day one…40 years ago. This machine right out of the box is a dream! I haven’t mastered all the fancy stitches yet, but am working on it. It is light and easy to transport. I like the little table attachment. I find the directions clear in the manual, but being a visual person I find that “playing” with the machine is how I learn. There are some good instructional videos on YouTube as well. For a fairly basic machine with a few extras but not every bell and whistle the price is reasonable. Overall I am very happy with my new Brother XR3774 and would not hesitate to recommend it to others. I would definitely buy it again.

Now with most people in quarantine, everyone is learning basic skills. Be it cooking, cleaning, stitching, etc. Sewing is something I consider to be a necessary life skill. It has pre-set automatic quilting stitches, sewing stitches, buttonholes, decorative stitches, etc. You can even monogram with it. It’s a great investment in a skill that we all need. 7. Brother XM2701 Sewing Machine

The Brother XM2701 Sewing Machine is specially designed for beginners who enjoy a very lightweight and portable sewing machine with a beautiful design.

If you’re looking for a sewing machine that has basic minimum features and doesn’t want to spend a lot of money then this is the sewing machine to purchase. This Brother XM2701 sewing machine features an automatic needle threader, easy to use, automatic bobbin winding, and jam-free top drop-in bobbin.

With these such nice features, beginners can get started as soon as possible and gain more experience with crafting and sewing. A comparison to the Brother CS6000i, this Brother XM2701 comes with a big rotary dial to change the stitches.

It has a fixed from the front and above it, the machine has all the stitches explained in a chart as you can see the number of any particular stitch and rotate the dial to choose one. It comes with a 1 style of the 1 step automatic buttonhole and shipped with 6 sewing feet. Although the Brother XM2701 sewing machine comes with 27 built-in stitches versus the Brother CS6000i that comes with 60 built-in stitches.

The XM2701 is still a great option because it’s less expensive than the Brother CS6000i and it’s user-friendly for newbies who are just starting that don’t want to spend a lot on their first sewing machine.

Specifications

  • Color: 27 Stitches
  • Dimensions: 12.1 x 5.9 x 15.3 in
  • Weight: 12.6 lbs
Pros
  • 72 built-in stitches
  • A versatile free arm
  • Automatic needle threader
Cons
  • Some users stated issues with the tension

Sample Customer Review… I live in a small NY apt. and the machine was a little larger than expected, but not overly so. It fits out of the way when not in use and works just fine on a coffee table. It is much more durable than a “portable” or “mini” machine, which is great as my 13-year-old will be using it too, and has plenty of stitch options for our use. There is a “how-to” video, but I wanted to get to a project ASAP, so just skimmed the included manual and it was similar enough to other machines I’ve owned that getting started was quick and easy. I purchased a sewing kit that included thread and a magnifying glass in order to thread the dreaded needle with my almost 50 eyes. After I finished my first project, I read further and discovered that there is a “needle threader” attached and ready to go…LIFE CHANGER!!! We have already completed 3 projects in less than a week and I owe it to this nifty little gadget that somehow escaped me when I purchased it. Not sure if this would be suitable for a full-time sewer or quilter, but for us DIY crafters, it is THE BOMB!!

8. Brother SE600

This sewing machine is convenient and jam-resistant. With over 75 built-in designs, you can easily customize your projects. It is highly computerized with great features and designs to choose from before stitching. It is useful, convenient, and very productive. There are over one hundred built-in sewing stitches to choose from. A large color touchscreen is another amazing highlight of the product.

Specifications

  • Color: 4″ X 4″ Embroidering Area, 3.2″ Lcd Touchscreen Display
  • Dimensions: 21.18 x 15.51 x 16.54 in
  • Weight: 26.24 lbs
Pros
  • Fast Sewing Speed
  • 80 Built-in designs
  • Efficient color touchscreen
  • Combination of sewing and embroidery
Cons
  • Can result in an injury

Sample Customer Review… I bought this to replace my older Brother SE400. This new model embroiders really nicely and is easy to use. I love that it has a port for a memory stick so you can easily load any pattern or name. I use Amazing Designs lettering software because I mostly embroider names. I can easily use the Amazing Designs software to create a name then just transfer it via the memory stick to the new Brother Embroidery machine. The older models have a similar feature but you have to use a cord to transfer the designs, which was difficult since my computer was in a different room.

9. Brother 2340CV

The Brother 2340CV isn’t exactly a serger but it’s a cover stitch machine. This machine is perfect if you’re into advanced sewing and working on projects such as one that requires making cover stitches or hemming.

Although a high-end serger can be another option, it’s going to be more complicated and time-consuming versus the 2340CV. Using the Brother 2340CV is going to be more convenient and not to mention, you’ll end up with nice cover stitches.

Specifications

  • Color: White
  • Dimensions: 13 x 15 x 13.4 in
  • Weight: 1 lbs
Pros
  • 1,100 stitches per min
  • Easy to thread
  • Accessory feet
  • Made with metal frame
Cons
  • Some users run into issues with this machine

Sample Customer Review… I bought this cover stitch machine to hem knits. I have found this surprisingly easy to use. I read several reviews that seemed to think it was tricky, so I read the instructions very carefully and looked up a couple of videos on YouTube. In one afternoon, I reviewed the manual, watched 3 short videos, threaded it, tested it on a T-shirt, and hemmed two rather expensive tops that were too long. I am very happy with it and wish I had bought it sooner. I did a lot of searching on the internet and when I bought it, the Amazon price combined with Prime shipping made it the best deal.

10. Brother DZ1234 Serger

There is a time and place when sewers want to enhance their skills and take a step to a more advanced level, and when this happens, it’s a wise choice to purchase a serger.

Although sergers don’t have many different abilities and options as a sewing machine does, it can still serve a very important function. For instance, if you want to clean up your fabric so there will be no stray threads, this is when the Serger steps in.

The Brother Serger DZ1234 provides a lot of great choices such as the type of stitches available and adjusting the settings depending on what type of fabric you are working on. This serger includes a blind hem stitch foot, gathering foot, two sets of thread, and a piping foot which allows you to create some creative designs.

The Brother Serger DZ1234 can look a bit confusing at first but depending on your pattern, you need at least four spools of thread that need to be threaded into the right needle.

On the bright side, the serger has color-coded thread paths that can make the task a lot easier than it once was. The Serger has an amazing 1300 spm speed which you can certainly finish a ton of fabric in a very short period.

Also, the worksite has a bright LED light that can help to know where you are and how your project is going.

Specifications

  • Color: “3 Included Accessory Feet and 2 Sets of Starter Thread”
  • Dimensions: 15.2 x 13 x 13.2 in
  • Weight: 18.1 lbs
Pros
  • Easy to use and thread
  • Includes 3 accessory feet
  • 1,300 stitches per minute
Cons
  • Some users claim the machine didn’t last long

Sample Customer Review… I wanted to have my own Serger instead of always borrowing from a fellow seamstress, and this one caught my eye. Brother has increasingly upgraded their products with not only attractive appearances but with performance. I love my Brother CS6000i and decided to go with the Designio serger and I cannot express how happy and excited I am. Everything is clearly marked and illustrated in the books as well as on the machine, and to me, this is the most user-friendly serger in my experience. I haven’t had a chance to watch the DVDs yet but the included books are very easy to understand. It comes with everything listed, which is awesome because you don’t have to spend extra money for nearly all the accessory feet offered for the Designio. The machine runs very smooth, is surprisingly quiet for a serger, and is SOOOOO fast! The cover it comes with is flimsy and has a funky smell but it is just a dust jacket. You could sew your own if you want something more attractive or buy a case if you need something more sturdy. Overall, for the value and quality, this is a decent machine for the price and the perfect investment for new users as well the experienced. (I’ve been sewing for 15 years, and yes it’s nice if you can afford the pricey high-end machines but why spend the money if you don’t have to.) If you need a good serger but affordable and functional, then you must get the Brother Designio Series Serger!

If you are a beginner who wants to start learning how to sew then an entry-level model from Brother is a way to go. If you have a couple of projects that you are planning to achieve and need a sewing machine that will give you consistent stitch then a mid-range Brother model is what you are looking for. A mid-range Brother model is provided in a way that you have a more stable machine versus the entry-level models.
