Grinding your coffee beans is a crucial step to making the perfect cup of coffee. After all, your cup of coffee is only going to be as good as the coffee beans you use to make it – and the coffee beans are only going to be as good as the grinder you use to grind them! Any coffee enthusiast will tell you that if you grind your coffee beans yourself – right before you need to use them – your coffee will taste that much better!
Once coffee beans are ground, it is hard for them to stay potent and you will notice that the flavor will start to degrade. Hence, you are going to need to own one of the best coffee grinders if you want good coffee in your kitchen!
Grinding is a ritual that is not only worth savoring but can be an almost therapeutic process. A good coffee grinder can make all the difference in your cup of coffee. From finely ground beans for the perfect espresso to larger consistency for amazing French Press coffee, and everything in between.
When you start grinding your own, carefully chosen coffee beans, right before brewing, you are most likely not going to want to go back to the boring world of pre-ground coffee. And that is exactly why we are here! We have compiled a list of the best coffee grinders to help you find the perfect grinder for your specific needs!
Best Coffee Grinders: Electric
1. OXO Brew Conical Burr Grinder
Oxo’s Brew Conical Burr grinder has a sample and intuitive design that delivers consistent grinds regardless of how you brew.
- Item Weight: 4.5lbs
- Product Dimensions (LxWxH): 7.4 x 12 x 16 inches
Sample customer review…This grinder is so simple to use and it makes the perfect grind for me! I am now thoroughly enjoying my old espresso maker because this grind is exactly what it needed! I like to start the day with espresso then make a pour-over cup of coffee for the drive to work. Switching between the grind is so simple it’s ridiculous! You just twist the top to line up the numbers for the brew you want (it didn’t take long to figure out which ones I need) then push the button to grind it… the knob turns to set the length of time to get the amount of coffee you want.
I have used other burr grinders and they weren’t able to grind the beans the way I wanted. One grinder couldn’t get it fine enough for espresso. Plus they were messy and plugged up easily. Not the case with this one.
I’ve used it daily for over a month now and I love it!Read more reviews at Amazon.com.
2. Baratza Encore Conical Burr Grinder
Baratza’s Encore Conical Burr grinder has been on the market since 2012 and is the company’s most commonly used grinder. Not only is it reliable but its grind consistency makes it the perfect choice for your home-brewed espresso, drip, or French Press coffee setup.
- Item Weight: 6.83lbs
- Product Dimensions: 4.7 x 6.3 x 13.8 inches
Sample customer review…This was a huge upgrade in our coffee game. I’m really impressed with the evenness of the beans being ground when they go through the grinder. We are more comfortable with weighing our beans and putting them through the grinder with this one than our other one. Plus, since I need decaf beans and my husband has regular beans, we can both use this grinder. It’s fairly easy to clean and the brush makes it pretty easy to reach those difficult cavities near the burr chamber.
We use French Press and find that the beans have a more robust flavor after using this grinder. We had a CoffeeMate grinder prior to this one. There is a huge difference in sound, bean grind consistency, and the grounds actually being made into coffee rather than being a mess on the counter.
I wholeheartedly recommend this exceptional coffee burr grinder to any coffee lovers or even mediocre coffee lovers who want to have a better coffee experience.Read more reviews Amazon.com.
3. Hamilton Beach Custom Grind Coffee Grinder
Coffee enthusiasts know how hard it is to find a burr grinder that is both decently operable and truly affordable. That is why we have included a blade grinder in this list – for those who want a solid grinder that they would not need to spend more than $30 on. Understandably, this grinder is not as sophisticated or customizable as the other more expensive models however, it offers a broad adjustment option that will give you at least some degree of precision as compared to single-button designs. One thing we love is that it can hold up to 14 cups worth of coffee!
To use the grinder, all you need to do is fill the stainless steel chamber, choose how much you want to grind and how coarse you want it to be, then press the button. That’s it. The machine will automatically grind until it reaches your desired consistency and then it will turn itself off. The chamber is removable which makes it that much easier to pour out the coffee you are done grinding and clean up right away.
- Item Weight: 1.87lbs
- Product Dimensions: 4.69 x 8.07 x 4.45 inches
- Manufacturer: Hamilton Beach
Sample customer review…I used a previous model of this grinder for over 15 years, until the blade broke. This grinder is an upgrade in several respects, all of which make it more durable as well as quieter. First, the grinding chamber itself is all metal where the previous one had been plastic with metal bands; after several years the plastic had cracked. The grinding chamber cover is much sturdier plastic. These improvements will prevent the situation I had to manage for several years with the older model: the interlock loosened due to cracks in the plastic, and I had to hold the cover in place while it was grinding. This interlock seems to be quite strong and I do not anticipate this problem any longer. It is much quieter than the older model. I usually grind a full chamber. I have used it with a sleeping baby on the other side of the counter peninsula in the kitchen without awakening her. There are five grinding settings, but you can also adjust the grind by varying the amount you indicate to be ground. I usually just keep it on medium and 14 cups, and the coffee tastes great to me. I like the cord-keeper feature, which works easily and helps keep the counter uncluttered when not in use. I am very satisfied after about 6 months of weekly use.Read more reviews on Amazon.com.
4. Cuisinart DBM-8 Supreme Grind Automatic Burr Mill
If you’re looking for a more budget-friendly option, this best-selling burr grinder is the one for you. Cuisinart’s DBM-8 Supreme Grind Automatic Burr Mill offers incredible versatility with over 18 grind settings so you can have your beans superfine or extra coarse. This grinder can grind enough to make anywhere from 4 to 18 cups of coffee, and it also features a removable chamber that can store up to 32 cups worth of grounds.
- Item Weight: 4.5 lbs
- Dimensions: 10.75 x 7.13 x 6 inches
- Manufacturer: Cuisinart
Sample customer review…This is my second grinder by Cusinart. My first one died after nearly 8 years of faithful service. I could have taken it apart and perhaps fixed it, however, at the price I paid for the replacement, it really wasn’t necessary.
This grinder is exceptional in service, has several levels of grind possibilities, takes 1/2 lb of beans at a time, and only takes a few minutes to fill up a container of ground coffee ready to go- wake up to the smell of delicious coffee and not have to fuss with the grinding noise of a cheap machine that doesn’t give you what you want.Read more reviews on Amazon.com.
5. KRUPS Precision Grinder
The KRUPS precision grinder, as described by Paul Schlader (co-founder and head roaster at New York City’s Birch Coffee), is the “more affordable alternative” to most other burr grinders. This grinder is very simple yet has all the essentials, including 12 settings to pick your desired grind size. It also has a “cup selector” option which allows you to grind the exact amount of coffee you need depending on how many cups of coffee you are planning on making – how cool?!
- Item Weight: 4.44lbs
- Product Dimensions: 13.60 x 10.00 x 6.90 inches
- Manufacturer: KRUPS
Sample customer review…Amazing Burr Coffee grinder! Best one for the price!!! Get it!!!
This is the best Burr coffee grinder! I really love it. I make fresh coffee weekly and this little machine helps me with it every time. I have searched and browsed a lot of grinders on Amazon and this is the one I chose. I am very happy with it.
Here are few things I love about it.
1. It’s compact
2. It allows you to adjust coarseness of the grind from 0-10
3. It allows you to automatically set how many cups you want to grind – from 2-12 cups.
4. You can press ON and switch OFF manually if you wish to control yourself how much to grind
5. It’s durable and works already for a long time.
6. Quality made.
I highly recommend this Burr Coffee grinder! Buy It without thinking!!!Read more reviews on Amazon.com.
6. Braun KSM2-WH Aromatic Coffee Grinder, White
This grinder by Braun makes grinding coffee simple, reliable, and completely safe! And it doubles as a grinder for finely chopping nuts!
- Item Weight: 1.5lbs
- Product Dimensions: 8.3 x 4.2 x 4.1 inches
- Colour: White
- 150 watt motor
Sample customer review…My former Braun coffee grinder lasted for 25 years old! So I was really worried that the quality of Braun would be diminished in comparison to that trooper of a product, because so many products these days go downhill in quality with replacing old school quality materials with plastic crap. However, so far after three months I have been wholeheartedly won over by this latest Braun iteration of my former model.
It feels lighter, which initially made me really worried that all the fabulous metal parts were now replace with cheap flimsy plastic, but interestingly the motor sounds identical to the former on, and the blades are even sharper than the old one. Well, because after 25 years, yeah, the blades get dull.
Overall, this product just performs great. So happy it is almost exactly like what I had. Still high quality! Woot! Glad it isn’t large so it takes up small real estate space in my kitchen. It seems to have tremendous power for such a small grinder, which is what I liked 25 years ago as well. This grinder just kicks out the power and performs.Read more reviews at Amazon.com.
7. De’Longhi Dedica Digital Coffee Grinder
The De’Longhi’s Dedica coffee grinder is one that Erika Vonie, coffee consultant and Q grader, swears by! Especially because it is able to cover a wide variety of grinds and features an easy-to-read LCD display. When asked about why she loves the grinder she said: “I can use it for literally every brewing method at home, from espresso to cold brew, which not all grinder can do”. When it comes to the digital LCD display, she expressed how it “makes it easy to read how much coffee is being ground, and at what grind size”.
In addition, by having grooves that you can slip a portafilter into when making an espresso at home, this grinder does a great deal by cutting down on waste.
- Item Weight: 6.10lbs
- Product Dimensions: 6.90 x 11.20 x 18.10 inches
- Manufacturer: DeLonghi America
Sample customer review…I love my DeLonghi Dedica Burr grinder, my only wish is that I had ordered one sooner. Its ease of use and digital display showing coffee strength, number of desired cups you want to brew etc. The ability to grind my coffee from Expresso to Drip to French Press with 18 different grind settings from very fine through course is awesome. I love the product and would highly recommend it to anyone looking to step up there game when it comes to a Burr coffee grinder. This grinder works great and looks great along side my Bonavita BV1900TS coffee brewer. For my next purchase I will be getting the Delonghi EC680M Dedica 15-Bar Pump Espresso Machine to complete my home coffee bar.Read more reviews on Amazon.com.
8. Breville Smart Grinder Pro
This grinder has a Precision Digital Time, giving you complete control over dose and grind time. There are 60 different grind settings that you can choose from to customize the coffee to your specific taste and favorite brew. These settings allow you to go from the finest Espresso to the coarsest French Press. The machine is programmed to automatically dose the same every time you grind which makes it much easier to achieve a consistent dose.
- Item Weight: 6.4lbs
- Product Dimensions: 8.5 x 6 x 15.5 inches
- Material: Stainless Steel
Sample customer review…This is an excellent, albeit expensive, coffee grinder. I ordered 3 machines in the $ 125 to $ 250 dollar price range and this was the only one that didn’t have an unacceptable design flaw. It has way more adjustments than I will ever use but it has many features that make it a perfect choice for me. It doesn’t generate an excessive amount of static and spews grounds all over our countertop even when using a stainless steel coffee cup for the grounds receptacle. The grounds are uniform and once you adjust it to your preferences you push one button and it does the job. It’s pretty quiet as these things go and many of them are as loud as a tornado siren. Hopefully, we will get a few years of service out of it.Read more reviews on Amazon.com.
9. Baratza Virtuoso+ Conical Burr Coffee Grinder With Digital Timer Display
This grinder by Baratza is an upgraded version of their widely loved Virtuoso grinder. It now features a digital timer, making it easy to repeat your dosing and consistency!
- Product Dimensions (LxWxH): 6.69 x 6.69 x 12.6
- Colour: Silver
Sample customer review…Other coffee grinders I’ve used or owned were slow, noisy, and produced uneven grinds that clung to the receiver when it was opened (and often caused grinds to scatter on the countertop). This grinder has none of those flaws and is often used by coffee shops as a backup machine or for special orders. Very clearly worth the price, and able to be repaired and renewed at a very modest cost. My last grinder!Read more reviews on Amazon.com.
10. Krups GX5000 Professional Electric Coffee Burr Grinder
This grinder’s Burr mill system will not only avoid overheating, but it will also ensure the best grinding result all the while preserving that delicious coffee aroma. The machine has a fineness selector that includes 45 settings all divided into 9 steps which will allow you to have control over the texture of your grinds – from very fine for espresso machines to the more coarse texture ideal for a French press. From the cup selector (2 to 12), you are able to choose how many cups of coffee you will be brewing so you can grind the perfect amount for your needs. Another feature we love is the coffee container with a lid that ensures your ground coffee is fresh and flavorful!
- Item Weight: 3.2lbs
- Product Dimensions: 4.29 x 7.24 x 10.4 inches
- Only works on 120V (per US standards)
Sample customer review…Very happy with this grinder. Replaced a 10-year-old Capresso that would no longer come apart for cleaning and could no longer be adjusted for grind level. It was also a regular (non-conical) burr grinder and it made phenomenal coffee, both for our Bunn and for our espresso machine. We didn’t want to go above $30-$35 range so chose this one instead. It comes apart more easily than our old one (great for cleaning). It has the words “fine” and “course” on the adjuster so I won’t forget which way to go (on the old one I never could remember if 1 was fine or course!!). And I love love love that the bean hopper on top is blocked from view by the silver “Krups” pedestal. Bean hoppers get so greasy and grimy with coffee oil that they don’t stay looking cool for very long. And the button to turn it on is huge and required only one finger, which our 5-year old thinks is super fun. Great design, Krups!Read more reviews on Amazon.com.
Best Coffee Grinders: Manual
11. Hario Skerton Plus Ceramic Coffee Mill
If the bells and whistles of an electric coffee grinder are not for you, this grinder may be the perfect option for you, as it has been described by many as the best manual grinder!
Having separate parts makes the Hario Skerton Plus Ceramic Coffee Mill an idea travel companion! It comes with a screw-top lid so you can take off the grinder top, seal the bottom bowl in place, and use the grinder as a storage container for freshly hand-ground coffee! How amazing is this feature?! Because of how long-lasting and precise the ceramic burrs are, they produce grind particles with incredibly even sizes – especially given that this is a manual grinder!
- Item Weight: 1.20lbs
- Product Dimensions: 8.00 x 4.00 x 5.00 inches
- Manufacturer: HARIO
Sample customer review…Great product. Did a lot of research like everyone else looking to upgrade from the basic electric grinders. After reading comments and watching video reviews, I chose to go with the Hario Skerton Pro. I mainly use a French press and it is grinds the beans very well. The consistency of the grinds is perfect. Was looking to remove as much of the fine sediment as possible. With my electric grinder I feel made the grinds too fine even when set to coarse.. The Hario has significantly reduced the sediment. Takes a little longer than the electric one, but it just adds to the morning coffee ritual. Adjustment’s are easy to make, the nut on the bottom clicks out every 1/4 turn (feels like 1/4 turn, may be 1/2) so when you clean it you know how many clicks out from fully closed you were set at. Would recommend this to anyone looking to upgrade from the cheap spice/coffee grinders.Read more reviews on Amazon.com.
12. Porlex Mini Stainless Steel Coffee Grinder
The Porlex Mini Stainless Steel Coffee Grinder is a manual grinder and its compact size makes it perfect for grinding on the go. Ideal for camping and traveling, this mini grinder doesn’t require an outlet to get the perfect grind, and the durable stainless steel means you don’t have to worry about it getting ruined in transit. The handle is also detachable which makes for even easier portability. The Porlex features ceramic burr grinders which are less susceptible to rust than steel burrs, and less prone to breakage than plastic burrs. While it is a manual grinder, which means you’ll have to do the work yourself, the grinder still requires very little effort. It also has 13 different grind features which allow for a fine espresso or a coarse French Press.
- Weight: 8 ounces
- Dimensions: 6 x 2.3 x 1.8 inches
- Manufacturer: KT Coffee Company
Sample customer review…I gotta give this little guy a lot of credit; it’s a spectacular portable grinder that has replaced, in quality, many of the larger, more expensive, electric grinders I’ve used or owned.
This small manual grinder is a great little device. It’s machined to perfection (the parts fit together securely, are well constructed, and sturdy). The construction, weight, and size are light and small, which is perfect for traveling and it fits perfectly in the AeroPress, which, at work, is a perfect combination for travel.
Onto the important part: the grind. The device is incredibly stable from super fine (almost Turkish coffee fine) to a coarse French Press style grind (although, some folks don’t like its coarse grind, I think it’s pretty good and very even). I strongly recommend this as it gives a more consistent grind – especially at coarse settings – than the Hario grinder and is made completely out of stainless steel, so it’s more portable and sturdy than the Kyocera.Read more reviews on Amazon.com.
Buying Guide: What to Consider When Purchasing Coffee Grinders
Type of Grinder
There are three main kinds of coffee grinders: blade grinders, burr grinders, and manual grinders. Blade grinders are a kind of an electric grinder that works by cutting up the beans using a spinning metal blade. Typically the most beginner-friendly, blade grinders are great if you’re looking for the fundamentals. The brew quality is usually more inconsistent and uneven, however they’re often smaller in size and easier to store than burr grinders. Burr grinders crush the coffee beans using two flat plates, one that spins and another that remains stationary. Burr grinders offer a more consistent grind but are typically larger and noisier than blade grinders. Manual grinders, as the name suggests, require the most work on the part of the user. Users crank a handle that grinds the beans through two flat burrs, similar to those of a burr grinder. They’re generally more time-consuming because they can’t handle the large number of beans that the blade and burr grinders can. Though this requires more time and effort, manual grinders are the quietest of all the grinders, and they can produce an evenly ground consistency.
Typically the most expensive grinders are the burr grinders due to the uniform grind and the number of options it offers, depending on the type of brew. Although these are the biggest and noisiest of the bunch, experts generally agree that they’re the best option. Blade grinders are less expensive than burr grinders, however, they lack the consistency and evenness that burr grinders provide. However, if you’re looking for the bare necessities, blade grinders get the job done and for a lower price. The cheapest option is the manual grinder. Manual grinders require you to put in the effort of grinding the beans yourself, but they produce an even grind while being virtually noiseless, all for a reduced price.
Number of Settings
The number of settings depends on the number of different brews you are looking to make. More settings will ultimately give you more options, but more isn’t always better if you’re just looking to brew a basic cup a few times a day. Grinders that have 40+ settings are for the true coffee connoisseurs that want to be able to make everything from fine espresso to coarse cold brew. Grinders that have 20-40 settings are best for those who want to make all their standard brews, but still want a little flexibility to be able to branch out and try new things. Grinders that have 20 settings or less are best for users who know what they like and stick to it. More settings will ultimately ramp up the price, so make sure you pick the grinder with the number of settings that fit your specific needs.
All in all, we hope that we have made it clear that the best coffee grinders can make all the difference in your coffee! Transitioning to making and grinding your own coffee can seem overwhelming at first but once you start you will notice how fun and therapeutic it can be. Don’t let the fear of the process stop you from buying one of the best coffee grinders that will change your coffee game!
