Top 10 Best Decaf Coffee Options

1. McCafe Decaf Premium Roast Keurig K Cup Coffee Pods

Enjoy the McCafe experience right from your home with these pods to insert into your keurig. This coffee is for those who use their keurig in the mornings. These pods can be easily inserted into the keurig for a delicious roast. It has a very rich smoky flavor just like the restaurant. The packaging comes in a variety of sizes ordered by the amount of pods. The smallest size is the 12 count and then the largest the 96 count.

Specifications

  • Premium roast
  • 100% Arabica bean coffee
Pros
  • True to the taste of McDonalds Coffee
Cons
  • Have to be used only for Keurig
  • Check for Expiration Date

Sample customer review…McCafé Premium Roast is a medium roast coffee for the Keurig machine, and it has quickly become one of my favorites. My favorite thing about the coffee is that it tastes very close to the coffee you can get at the local McDonald’s. Too often I buy a blend that tastes like a weaker cousin of the blend it is supposed to be. McCafé Premium Roast doesn’t have this problem.

When brewed at the 8-ounce setting, it isn’t weak and tastes like what McCafe coffee should taste like. At its current price of around $35, the 84 count box works out to about 42 cents per cup which a great deal for K-Cup coffee that I actually enjoy. I will definitely be buying more of it.

2. Peet’s Coffee Decaf House Blend

This decaf coffee is one that is very liked and talked about. The Major Dickason’s Blend is one of the most popular options from Peet’s Coffee. It has a very rich and smoky and spicy flavor. This company has many decaf options: Decaf French Roast, Decaf House Blend, and the Decaf Major Dickason’s Blend. The packaging for this coffee is 1.12 pound, 10.5, 12, 20, 18 ounce bags. Peet’s coffee is very popular and is known for the world’s best coffee beans that have all the right amount of freshness.

Specifications

  • Dark Roast
  • Decaffeinated Arabica Coffee
Pros
  • Freshly roasted
  • High Quality Beans
Cons
  • Expiration date can vary

Sample customer review…Peet’s makes the best dark roast coffee in both regular grind and K-Cups. Believe me, I have tried many different coffee brands from medium to dark to Italian/French and decaf dark roasts and nothing compares to this coffee. There is no bitter taste like most other dark roasts on the market. You get a smooth and deep coffee taste with every sip you take.

A true test of a good coffee is to make a pit in the morning and let the pot get cold or simmer all day. If the coffee is still good after it’s rested then it’s a great coffee. Peet’s certainly meet the coffee challenge head-on and passes with flying colors.

3. Cafe Don Pablo Decaf Coffee

This is one of the top decaffeinated coffees. It is Swiss Water processed with low acidity. The taste is rich in caramel and coca with hints of citrus and low acidity. It is roasted in small batches but rich in flavor. The packaging for this decaf coffee is offered in the 2 Pound or the 5 Pound which guarantees a greater amount of use. Even though this specific company is not fair-trade certified, it has its own Colombian certification.

Specifications

  • Medium/Dark Roast
  • Whole Bean Coffee
Pros
  • Rich in Flavor
  • Low Acidity
Cons
  • Not a great smell
  • Bitter Taste

Sample customer review…I’ve been researching the best organic water processed decaf and have honed in on Don Pablo. I grew up in a household of Illy espresso drinkers but wanted an organic/fairtrade Swiss Water Processed Decaf. Although they don’t have an “organic” designation on this Don Pablo product, I’ve read they are pretty much an organic farm and have their own fair trade type system. (They do have an organic caffeinated coffee that got 90 marks on Coffee Review!) This coffee is deliciously flavored. Heaven in a cup. Just the right roast too.

I’m glad I chose Don Pablo. I’ve got a few other organics and water-processed decafs I’ve tried and more to come but nothing compares to this yet and I already know this is going to be one of my favorites. Great customer service too (kind, quick, and helpful).

4. Kicking Horse Decaf Dark Roast Coffee

This dark roast coffee was roasted in the Canadian rocky mountain peaks. The perfect touch of decaffeinated coffee that is organic and fairtrade. Decaf beans came from Central and South America done using the Swiss Water Process, This Arabica coffee tastes rich in dark chocolate, with hints of brown sugar and roasted hazelnuts. The packaging on this decaf coffee comes with two options: the 10 ounce pack or the 2.2 pound pack of 1. The methods that are best recommended is the french press.

Specifications

  • Dark Roast
  • Organic
  • Kosher Diet
Pros
  • Rich Tasting
  • Fair Trade Certified
Cons
  • The bag was old

Sample customer review… Amazing coffee! I’ve purchased Death Wish, Valhalla Java, San Francisco Bay, Starbucks – all manner of whole bean coffees, and this was the absolute best. It is smooth, non-acidic, mellow, and yet somehow still kicks you in the backside and gets you going in the morning.

I found I needed a few fewer beans for a couple of cups than I did with other coffees, so even though it’s a 10oz bag, I’d say it easily goes as far as a 12oz bag of most coffees, maybe even a little further. I have also had the decaf of this, and it is delicious as well. There’s a great aroma, a nice amount of oil, and it works great in a French Press. Treat yourself to some Grizzly Claw. It makes getting out of bed bearable. Bearable, Grizzly Claw – see what I did there?

5. Verena Street

This is a family owned company made this coffee in Dubuque, Iowa. This medium roast coffee is rich in mellow flavor with natural decaffeinated whole beans. They use the 100% natural Swiss Water Process that enhances the flavor. The packaging comes in 2, 5, 11, 12, Pound Pack of pure decaf coffee. This specific decaf is Kosher certified which is highly recommended and the world’s most trusted. It has also been deemed Climate Pledge Friendly.

Specifications

  • Medium Roast
  • Arabica Coffee
  • Whole Bean
Pros
  • Kosher Certified
  • Freshly roasted
Cons
  • Beans may be roasted inconsistently

Sample customer review… The ‘Cow Tipper’ is easily the best coffee that I’ve ever had. Nice medium roast without any acidic or bitter taste. The smell of the coffee beans with the added flavoring is very powerful. I grind the whole beans by hand in a mortar and pestle and my kitchen smells like vanilla, caramel & coffee for hours. Make sure you use filtered water and brew it at 195-200 degrees (30 seconds from a boil) to avoid leaching out excessive bitterness that you get with water that is too hot.

The whole beans are nice because they still have all of the great oils on the inside and outside of the beans that get lost to a degree when you get it pre-ground. The oily grounds can gum up coffee grinders though. Again, this is easily the best coffee I’ve ever had. The added flavors are very pronounced before, during, and after brewing.

I can’t say that I actually taste them in the brewed coffee, but you can certainly smell them. I’m going to set up the subscription/auto-delivery and get a 2lb bag every month or two.

6. Jo Coffee No Fun Jo Decaf

This Coffee is one of the top decaf coffee recommended because it has been USDA, Fair Trade and Kosher Certified. This No Fun Jo Decaf has the taste of blueberry with a combination of milk chocolate for a rich taste that makes it good. It uses the Swiss Water Process to make the decaf coffee organic. The packaging is available in two sizes in the 12 oz or the 2lb. For the best use it is recommended that use these 2 tablespoons of ground coffee and 6 oz of water and blend those to enjoy 🙂

Specifications

  • Arabica Beans
  • Medium Roast
  • Organic Coffee
  • Fair Trade Certified
Pros
  • Swiss Water Processed
  • Good tasting Decaf Coffee
Cons
  • Watery Results
  • Grounds can be dry

Sample customer review…I had to give up caffeine for pregnancy purposes and since I love coffee, that is a scary thing to do! I knew that the decaf options at my local grocery store were NOT going to cut it, so I went online looking to find something better. I wanted a coffee that tasted like the real thing even though I would not get the caffeine. The No Fun Jo decaf has a nice, full flavor. It doesn’t have that “decaf” flavor I’ve encountered in other decafs.

Sure it’s not the cheapest decaf, but it’s worth it to get a decent cup of coffee while I cannot have caffeine. I also appreciate that it is also organic and fair trade certified. While it isn’t quite as bold/intense as a true caffeinated cup (I love my coffee dark and rich and bold), it does a great job as an alternative and actually tastes good.

The flavors say “blueberry” and chocolate” but it isn’t flavored or sweet so don’t let that worry you. I brew it in my cheap drip coffee maker on “bold” setting to get more flavor. I’ve purchased this coffee several times now and I’m gonna keep on drinking it.

7. Koffee Kult Colombian Decaf

This Medium Roast Decaf is known for its rich flavor in whole coffee beans from Colombia. Depending on your specific preference you can buy the coffee either whole beans or pre-ground. Specifications

  • Colombian Decaf
  • 100% Arabica
  • Whole Bean
Pros
  • Resealable Bags
  • Delicious in flavor
  • Great Customer Service
Cons
  • No certifications
  • Bland tasting

Sample customer review… This whole bean Columbian 100 percent Arabica decaffeinated coffee has an excellent aroma and a rich smooth flavor, particularly for a decaf. The coffee uses the chemical-free Swiss Water Process and I appreciate that the coffee is stated to be rainforest friendly. I brewed the coffee in an automatic drip coffee maker and used a burr grinder set to medium-fine–and these things are subjective but I found the result delicious.

To estimate shelf-life this two-pound re-sealable bag has a long Best By date that is 22 months in the future. But to ensure optimal taste, after opening store in a cool dark place or vacuum seal. A good choice when deciding to reduce caffeine consumption or wishing to brew coffee in the evening and not interfere with sleep.

Pros
  • Mayan Swiss Water Decaf
  • Swiss Water Processed
Cons
  • Chemical taste and smell

Sample customer review…Wonderful coffee! Best decaf I’ve ever had! I can’t even tell it’s decaf. This roast is superb and works great as espresso. It has an excellent crema! I generally like medium roast coffees and this one is perfect. So flavorful and definitely superior to grocery store brands or even the other top-rated coffees on Amazon. I was looking for a Swiss water decaf and apparently Mayan process decaf is the same style, decaffeinated without chemicals. This process is much better for the environment.

I spent some time in Guatemala this summer and found the coffee there to be the best I’ve ever tasted. I was thrilled to find the same organic, shade-grown, fair trade, delicious coffee in a natural decaf formula! It tastes just like the coffee I had on the small coffee plantations in Guatemala. Top-notch quality in an affordable product. Thank you, Stone Street! I highly recommend this item

9. Volcanica Coffee Sumatra Mandheling Decaf Coffee

This coffee is from the volcanic mountain in Sumatra, where they focus on the high quality single origin coffee. It has a rich and earthy flavor full of brown spice that is well balanced with mild acidity. The aftertaste flavor is syrupy. The decaf coffee is processed by the Swiss Water Process and it is semi washed while being sun dried. This item is packaged in a 1 pound bag

Specifications

  • Arabica
  • Medium Roast
  • Organic
Pros
  • Single Origin Coffee
  • Swiss Water Process
  • 100% Customer Satisfaction Guaranteed
Cons
  • Way more acidic
  • Dry tasting

Sample customer review… So, this coffee is exactly what I expected with the bonus of being Swiss water process decaf. The flavors are close to earthy cocoa, with a pleasant hint of roast. You have to make sure that you use the right ratio of water and coffee, and I found that setting the grinder to an espresso grind gives the best flavor. It is better than another decaf Sumatra by far.

I am really enjoying this coffee. I grind the beans every morning to make a fresh pot. Sumatra has a slightly herbal flavor that I have come to love. The fact that it is decaf does not seem to take away from the flavor.

Things to Consider Before Buying

What is Decaf Coffee?

Decaf coffee is the idea that it is 97% less caffeinated than regular coffee. In order to brew decaf coffee it is the same way you would brew regular coffee. Decaf is the normal amount of coffee just without caffeine. Because they have invented processes that take away the caffeine in coffee that improves the taste and quality of decaf.

The History of Decaf Coffee

The first decaffeinated coffee was made by a german man Ludwig Roselious. He wanted to invent a decaffeinated version because he believed that the reason his father died was because the excessive drinking of caffeinated coffee has poisoned him. This shows that since the early days that drinking too much caffeine cannot be good for a person. That is where decaffeinated coffee comes in and it also can be sweetened to have a similar tasting to regular coffee.

Why Decaf?

Decaf is about the taste and pleasure of a caffeinated drink just without all of the caffeine that comes in it. Not all decaf coffee is the same there are tons of different kinds all with different flavors depending on your preference!

How to Know if the Coffee is Decaf?

To know if your coffee is Decaf simply look to see if it says Swiss Water Process or Carbon Dioxide Process. The Swiss Water Process removes only the caffeine and leaves everything else. It is a completely natural process and it does not need any additional chemicals to remove the caffeine. Although it works it can be expensive but in the end you will not regret the results. This process tries to remove caffeine without taking away the delicious flavor of coffee. The Swiss Water Process removes up to 99.9% of caffeine in coffee beans.

How Do I Brew Decaf Coffee?

To brew decaf coffee, it is quite simple although this process depends on whether you have coffee grounds or coffee beans in your package. If you have coffee grounds then the first thing you do is simply take 2 tablespoons of it and pour it into a cup. Then add hot water specifically 6 oz and then stir until completely mixed afterwards feel free to add the desired creams or sugars if needed.

If you buy the coffee beans, the first thing to do is to soak them in cold water unless you have swiss water decaffeinated beans. Then you roast them through a coffee roaster and the final step is to grind it and to make sure you clean the grinder thoroughly.

Is There Caffeine in Decaf Coffee?

Yes there is caffeine in coffee beans naturally. Coffee contains many chemicals that make up the delicious taste and aroma that we love. Most decaf coffee already comes with 2 to 12 milligrams. The FDA made it known that there can only be a maximum amount of caffeine in each decaf cup. The amount that can be in each cup varies on the size of your serving.

Why Should You Drink Decaf Coffee?

You should choose to enjoy a cup of decaf coffee while the flavors continue while remaining an organic product. It allows you to enjoy the nice cup of coffee without feeling all the energy and without it keeping you awake. Everyone has different side effects to coffee and some drinking decaf is the healthier option without all of the caffeine.
