Features of a Good Laptop: Laptop Specifications List

Before you spend a large amount of money on anything it’s always a good idea to do research and make sure you know the product well enough to make a sound reasonable decision. There are several features to think about when considering purchasing a laptop, like what exactly will you be using it for.

Laptops are something that you’ll want to be able to use for a long time, most are designed to last up to years, but it is up to you as a user to choose the correct one for you and your work needs. For example, if you are an artist of some kind you have a better fit with a 2-in1 laptop, as opposed to what a student who mainly needs it for papers and PowerPoint would require in a laptop.

There is no such thing as the perfect technology in life however you can certainly come close. With this buying guide hopefully, you’ll be able to narrow things down on the important specifications for buying.

Brand

If you’re familiar with any of the laptop manufacturers out then this part should be easy enough for you. For those that have zero ideas about this here are some specifications

Apple:  at the moment Mac doesn’t make any touch screen laptops (that could change in the near future) so for those that would like touch screens this brand isn’t for you. All of their laptops come with the newest operating system of that time, right now it the macOS Catalina. The difference between this interface and the others is Siri and apps dock on the bottom of mac as opposed to Microsoft’s start menu and taskbar. Also keep in mind that Apple doesn’t always permit users to download certain Android apps, finally the most significant would be the price.

Windows:  you are most likely to find a laptop that is both super affordable and highly functional with this brand. Not only that they offer various touchscreen options in their catalog. They offer dual graphic chips, fingerprint readers on some of the laptops and are just overall a great choice for everyone, from students to professional business workers, and gamers.

Chrome: These laptops are great for kids as they hardly get infected with viruses. They are also affordable, have long battery life, and most times are lighter than their competition, making them greatly portable. However, their operations are limited which is why these laptops would be recommended mainly for students, kids, and users who are planning on using them for basic jobs like emails, surfing the web, or basic word processing. Anyone who wants to do any sophisticated programs like the design or video editing with their laptop look elsewhere.

Specifications

Specs should be your highest priority when buying a laptop because getting a laptop whose specs are under the limits of what you need for your programs can be a complete headache.

CPU

CPUs make a significant difference in a laptop’s performance. First off I would recommend getting the latest one or as close to the latest one as you can.

At this point I would recommend getting an Intel Core i5 or higher, anything below that would be functional but it wouldn’t give you great performance. The latest is the Intel Core i9 which provides fast performance and is highly suggested for gamers and others who will be using demanding apps and programs.

Graphics

Focus on graphics if you plan on using demanding programs like 3D work, video/photo editing. Like everything else, graphics come from high-end to low-end. An example of the low one is Nvidia MX250, 1650 GPUs, and an example of high-end graphic models is RTX 2070 or 2080 CPUs.

Screen

First, decide if you want a 2-in-1 laptop or a traditional one, some of these usually come with a pen, and some you would have to purchase the pen separately. For sharper content, and to get more on your screen it is recommended that you get 1920×1080 Full HD.

RAM

The ideal RAM size recommended would be 8GB anything below that would be subpar. Go for 16GB or higher, yes you’ll have to spend a little more but it will be worth it. Get as much as you figure that you’ll be using.

Battery life

Battery life is important because there are laptops that aren’t able to hold on to battery juice for nothing. I’m pretty sure you don’t want to be near an outlet 24/7 just to make sure your laptop doesn’t die on you. So a laptop with 7 hours of battery life or longer would be the best choice.

There are no right or wrong answers here, just what works best for every individual user/buyer. However, these are some of the basic features to look into when purchasing a device that you plan on using for years. Make sure to read reviews before you buy whatever you end up choosing because it’s always a good idea to get ratings and input from actual users.
