VoiceMeeter is a popular virtual audio mixer for Windows which mixes several sources of audio and sends them to various outputs. It can connect you to various devices and applications. VoiceMeeter is free for general use, but if you’re using it professionally, you would need a paid license.

How to Use VoiceMeeter

  1. Install VoiceMeeter and a soundboard such as EXP Soundboard 
  2. Go to sound settings on the Control Panel. On the “Recordings” tab, enable VoiceMeeter input and output. 
  3. On the same tab, set “VoiceMeeter Output” as the default device
  4. Open EXP Soundboard and make “VoiceMeeter Input” the first output
  5. In VoiceMeeter, make your mic the first hardware input 
  6. Choose your speakers under “A1 Hardware Out.” Now you can hear the sound that enters the mic
  7. Go to the “Start” menu. Find “Voice Recorder” and open it. Here, you can test if everything is working by playing back the recording of the sounds from your virtual mic
  8. Click on the mic icon to begin recording and play any sound file on the soundboard

  1. Go to sound settings on the Control Panel

If you use GMod, you need Foobar and Virtual Audio Cable. 

Foobar is an audio player compatible with Windows, Mac, and Android. It can organize, convert, and resample files.  

The Virtual Audio Cable program takes audio from one app as input and transfers it to another app as output. This is all done digitally, so the audio quality is not affected. There is a one-time payment required to use the program.

How to Use Foobar and Virtual Audio Cable

  1. Install Virtual Audio Cable and Foobar
  2. Open Virtual Audio Cable
  3. Under the “Driver Parameters” folder, choose  “2.”  Then open “Audio Repeater” three times
  4. Start up Foobar, click “File,” and go to “Preferences”
  5. Click on “Output” and under “Device,” have “Line 1” selected 
  6. Go to the first “Audio Repeater” window. For “Wave in,” pick “Line 1” and for “Wave out,” pick “Line 2” 
  7. Go to the second window. For “Wave in,” pick “Microphone” and for “Wave out,” pick “Line 2” 
  8. Go to the third window. For “Wave in,” pick “Line 2” and for “Wave out,” pick either “Loudspeakers” or “Headphones.” Click “Start”
  9. Go to sound settings on the Control Panel. On the “Recordings” tab, make “Line 2” the default device
  10. Go to the game and type “+voicerecord” in the developer console

Playing Music Through Your Mic for Rust Users

If you’re on Rust, you’ll need a soundboard, Virtual Audio Cable, and VoiceMeeter. EXP Soundboard is recommended. You’ll also need to change Steam settings.
