1. Coway Airmega 400
[amazon box=”B01C9RIACG” description=” ” rating=”4.7″]
The Coway Airmega 400 is one of the best air purifier for large rooms, as it can handle cleaning rooms of up to 1,560 square feet big. Due to this, the Coway Airmega 400 is able to accommodate larger open floor plans, office spaces, basements, and other very large rooms. Although this purifier does not have an exceptionally sleek design, it makes up for that with its interior design and great performance.
As it covers up to 1,256 or 1,560 square feet, (depending on whether you buy the 300 Model or 400 Model), this air purifying unit has a 340 CFM airflow and a CADR rating of 350. This makes this product one of the only air purifiers with a CADR rating higher than its airflow besides the Alen BreatheSmart 75i. These specs make this machine particularly exceptional because the closer the CADR rating and CFM airflow, the more efficient the air cleaning process is.
This air purifier also sports an Advanced Max2 Filter Set, which combines two things: a True HEPA filter and an activated carbon filter. In combination with the activated carbon filter, the filtration system of this product not only removes 99.97% of pollutants the size of 0.3 microns, but it also captures 99% of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and odor-producing particles too. In the meantime, this device also works on reporting the quality of your air in real-time for every air cycle, which is shown by the color of the LED ring on the unit.
In addition to its great performance, the Coway Airmega 400 also has sensors for auto mode so that the machine can read the current air quality and adjust accordingly. There are also four timer options, including 1, 2, 4, or 8-hour timers so that the machine can run for an allotted time frame of your liking. In addition to these features, the overall performance of this product was engineered to be energy efficient as well.
As one of the cheaper air purifiers in the market that are best suited for larger rooms, the Coway Airmega 400 is your best bet if your budget is lower. It performs just as beautifully as the Alen BreatheSmart 75i and even has a lower noise level of 43.2 dB at the highest fan speed. Due to its combined filtration system of a True HEPA and activated carbon filters, it’s almost perfectly balanced CADR rating and CFM airflow, and the additional features that this air purifier comes with, lands this air purifier in second place for the best air purifiers for large rooms.

Sample Customer Review… This unit is best suited for large areas such as living rooms, basements, or apartments. Its effectiveness is outstanding and has features that make its use set it and forget it. The inclusion of a light & particle sensor makes the Automatic feature truly useful. Also has a full lights-off option which makes it blend right into the background. The fan speed will vary when on auto depending on pollutants which reminds the user it’s working properly. Scrubbing the air you breathe to make sure it’s clean and healthy.
At night it slips into sleep mode which makes the fan unnoticeable. At full tilt, it’s loud but effective and will slow down once the air has been scrubbed. Two large filters on either side pull the air in and expel it from its top creating good circulation. The filters are giant and include a carbon portion that eliminates odors which is nice as well. Everything about this unit is top-notch including the wrapped cord. Well built and works as it should.

2. Honeywell HPA300
[amazon box=”B00BWYO53G” description=” ” rating=”4.7″]
The Honeywell HPA300 is one of the cheapest air purifiers in the market and in our list for the best air purifiers for large rooms.
Able to cover 1,163 square feet at 2 ACH, and 465 square feet at 5 ACH, this product has a 320 CADR rating. With its three cleaning levels, a True HEPA filter and an activated carbon filter, this machine works on reducing 99.97% of all pollutants that are 0.3 microns. The kind of contaminants that this air purifier can clean out include pet dander, dust, smoke, pollen, mold spores, viruses and bacteria.
One of the drawbacks of this air purifier is that it is not compatible with other air purifier filters, meaning that you have no other choice but to continually buy the Genuine Honeywell filters. If you do purchase any other filter besides the recommended one, you are not guaranteed the same performance or efficiency. Another one of the notable drawbacks of this product includes no touchscreen interface, no Wi-Fi connectivity or wireless control, and that the sound level of it is unknown.
The Honeywell HPA300 is one of the simplest air purifiers that you can choose from. It has the basic capabilities that any air purifier should have without any of the fancy features that you can get with a more expensive unit. For its price and utility, this air purifier is definitely worth considering.
Specifications
- Covers 1,163 sq ft
- 9.25” x 20” x 22.25”
- 21 pounds
- True HEPA filter
Sample Customer Review… This unit is a tad bigger than I expected but in this house (versus houses I’ve previously lived in) the size isn’t a factor for me. I use it in a two-room “open space” concept and it is just great! Don’t expect it to work overnight because it takes about 2 days running continuously on low to achieve optimum effectiveness. I have mega allergies and this lovely unit is now my best friend. I can tell a big difference when I stay in the room where the unit is versus other rooms. The suggestion is to close the windows and even doors to other rooms to avoid overtaxing the unit’s effectiveness. I wish it had wheels so I could easily move it around, but it’s not really heavy and it can be done if you have a place to put it in different rooms. Because it attracts air to it (and ejects purified air), it is also important to note that wherever you put it may attract more dust than usual. It is a small price to pay for breathing better and feeling more energized.

3. Winix 5500-2
[amazon box=”B01D8DAYII” description=” ” rating=”4.7″]
As one of the most compactly designed air purifiers and one of the cheapest, the Winix 5500-2 is more ideal if you have a smaller space that you are concerned about. This air purifier is only able to cover a space of 360 square feet, so it is not ideal for those larger spaces in your home. Although this is definitely a drawback, the True HEPA filter and its washable advanced odor control (AOC) carbon filter makes up for it by contributing to the unit’s great performance levels. By capturing 99.97% of all particles in the air, this unit is able to capture mold spores, dust, pet dander, smoke, microbes, viruses and bacteria. With a coverage of 360 square feet and a CADR rating of 360, this perfect balance is highly ideal for cleaning your household’s air.
With a low sound level of 27.8 dB, this air purifier is great for operating at a very quiet level so that you don’t even notice it there at its highest fan level. One of the most convenient features that this machine boasts is its Sleep Mode. When a room is darkened, the unit automatically continues to clean the air but does so at a quiet, and energy-efficient operation so that it’s not disturbing to those who are sleeping.
The Winix 5500-2 also has some great features, including an LED light that shows the air quality of the room in real-time which is indicated by the different colors it exhibits. Although this air purifier is not highly ideal for large rooms, it can serve as a great backup or mini-unit just in case you’d prefer a smaller and more compact machine in some particular rooms of your home. At a very cheap price not only can you get some exceptional performance when you buy the Winix 5500-2, but you can also get some of its most convenient features as well.

Sample Customer Review… In this crazy time of Coronavirus, we are all looking for ways to make our homes safe, or at least I am. One of the things I wanted to do was filter out as many “particles” and as much fine dust as possible to protect our respiratory system. I already have a different brand of air purifier but I wanted something that did a better job.
I researched several options and thought I’d try this one: Winix 5500-2. My only hesitation was that from the photos, it seemed like it might stick out like a sore thumb because it is so big. But the features were what I wanted so I went ahead and ordered it.
I am so happy that I ordered this Air Purifier! (1) It comes ready to use, (2) it is not a “big sore thumb” in a room, (3) it is quiet and has several options that make sense, and most of all, (4) it works wonders and absolutely cleans & filters the air as advertised. In fact, I was so pleased with this purchase that I HAVE BOUGHT TWO MORE

Sample Customer Review… Purchased two units. Cleaned the air in 1200 sq feet in 20 minutes from bad-red to good-green, also removed cooking odors and allergens. We sneezed continually for a day, but it has been a week and no allergy flare-ups. We also have tons of mold in NE Florida and this is supposed to reduce the spores. I am so pleased with this brand, that I ordered 2 more for the larger bedrooms.
I have another brand that was working fine and moved it to another bedroom. I have 2500 square feet, 3 people on different schedules, and tons of cooking orders, sand, mold, and an allergy to live oak and pollen. We also have the old Dyson models, but can’t get filters. I ordered a year’s worth of filters for each unit for this brand. We are breathing easier after only one week.

5. Winix AM90 Wi-Fi Air Purifier
[amazon box=”B07KQBNM7H” description=” ” rating=”4.6″]
This air purifier is the best of both worlds. This model is very basic and easy to use, while also partnered with various unique features. The Winix AM90 is built with a 4-stage filtration process consisting of a pre-filter, activated carbon filter, true HEPA filter, and a Winix Plasmawave ionizer. Together these four filters capture large contaminants, absorb household odors, rid the air of allergens and viruses, and also reduce the overall amount of pollutants throughout your home. The Plasmawave feature can easily be switched on or off depending on if you want to utilize the ionizer.
This model covers up to 360 square feet and will clean the air in the room four times per hour. It also has a high CADR rating, meaning that it produces fresh air faster than other models on the market. The noise level of this machine is almost silent, and has been compared to a whisper, making it perfect for bedrooms.
This model comes with many additional features that are not paired with a traditional air purifier. It is a smart air purifier as it can be paired with Alexa voice control. If you do not have Alexa in your home, it can also be easily paired to your home’s wifi, using the Winix Smart app. The Smart sensor on the device monitors the air quality throughout the house, and the number is clearly indicated in the LED display. This model also has a sleep mode and dim indicator light, which again is perfect for bedrooms.
Specifications
- Comes with True HEPA and Activated Carbon Filter
- 16.5 lbs
- 2-Year Warranty
- Unscented
- Wifi Enabled
- Works with Amazon Alexa voice commands
- Washable mesh filter
Sample Customer Review… So far so good. Bought one of these a few months ago, initially since my wife and I seem to have developed a greater sensitivity to spring pollen, which has been particularly heavy this year. Based on early positive perceptions of the first unit located in our bedroom, I bought 2 more to locate in other parts of the house where we tend to plant ourselves during the day.
The first unit came with a broken controller board for WiFi and WINIX rep was easy to contact and very helpful in quickly shipping out a replacement unit. All three easily connected to the internet, but the utility of internet connection and Alexa connection are marginally useful since the unit is pretty much self-running.
It detects increased contaminants and moves to higher speeds until the problem is resolved. Runs very quietly, almost unnoticeable, at lower speeds. The bedroom unit hasn’t disturbed us at all. Turbo mode, the highest speed, is very noticeable, but still not overwhelming. Based on first 15 day cleaning of pre-filters, it is catching a lot of dust, dander and pet hair. I would buy these again and plan to buy 1 – 2 more in the near future.

6. Alen BreatheSmart 75i
[amazon box=”B07FVYF77S” description=” ” rating=”4.6″]
As a distinguished brand, Alen has created one of the best air purifiers in the market with their Alen BreatheSmart 75i product. On the outside, the product is really sleek and sports a simple design that can be put anywhere in the home without detracting from your style of interior design. The great looks of its exterior are quite representative of its interior and what kind of features this air purifier offers to clean your indoor air. Another thing that you will notice first is its size. This product is big but not the biggest in the market which makes it more ideal.
Able to filter out the air within the room of up to 1,300 square feet, this humidifier is perfect for your living room, master bedroom, and other equally large spaces. More specifically, at about 1,300 square feet this air purifier is able to operate at 2 ACH and 5 ACH within 520 square feet. With a closer look at the Alen product’s specifications, you can see that it has a rating of 350 CADR and a maximum airflow of 347 CFM.
The BreatheSmart 75i also has advanced H13 HEPA filters, which are created to be more thorough in filtering out your air. It has a medical-grade HEPA filtration level as it captures more than 99% of the particles that are the size of 0.1 microns. But there are four different types of True HEPA filters that you can choose from before you purchase your Alen air purifier including:
- HEPA-Pure – targets microscopic allergens
- HEPA-Silver – extra layer of protection for those with asthma
- HEPA-FreshPlus – extra layers to attack smoke and heavy chemical vapors
- HEPA-OdorCell – extra layers to attack strong odors of pets and babies
Another testament to its good quality is the low dB it quietly boasts. All other large air purifiers usually have more than 60 dB because of their higher airflow but the Alen air purifier has managed to lower its sound level to 49 dB. Alen specifically developed and created their products to be used in the bedroom, making this product one of the quietest largest air purifiers available.
As one of the best air purifiers to choose from, the Alen BreatheSmart 75i is highly recommended because of its perfectly synchronized CFM and CADR, the minimal amount of sound that it makes, and its ability in filtering out your large space by using H13 HEPA filters.
Specifications
- Covers 1,300 sq ft every 30 minutes
- 15” x 23” x 30.75”
- True H13 HEPA filter
- 350 CADR and 347 CFM
- 49 dB
- Colors change according to air quality
- 5 fan speed settings
Sample Customer Review… We chose this product after reading a review on Consumer Reports. Here is what we have found: Quiet. From what we had read about air purifiers in general, we were a little nervous about how much noise this might add to our venue. However, now we use it every day on “turbo” setting (the highest setting) and it is MUCH less noisy than the window fans we were previously using, and it is only 1/3 as “noisy” as our HVAC system!
If you listen for it, you can tell that it is running, but otherwise, we don’t notice it; it doesn’t impair the audibility of speaking or singing. We are very impressed. Effective. We put one in the dormitory (also on “turbo”), and we have experienced a noticeable increase in quality of sleep, especially for the elderly. Great service. We had a question for customer service, and they were excellent and helpful both by phone and e-mail.
As a bonus, the product packaging is a dream. One unit made quite a journey on the way here, but the packaging kept it undamaged, and the box is ingeniously designed to lift open in a special way that effortlessly releases the product from the packaging so you can lift it right out. No struggling with two people to pull the packaging off as you take it out! Clean and beautiful.

7. Medify Air MA-112
[amazon box=”B07LFJMS2S” description=” ” rating=”4.6″]
The clean, white design all around of the Medify Air MA-112 makes it highly desirable for putting it anywhere in your home despite its big size. The performance of this product is superior in the way that it guarantees clean air in your household.
The suggested room size for this air purifier is either 1,200 or 2,400 square feet but this machine can withstand a space up to 3,700 square feet large. This product can practically clean the air in your whole apartment! With a CADR rating of 950, the air in your home is sure to be cleaned throughout several air cycles during the day. More specifically, the CADR rating is 400 for dust, 450 for smoke and 450 for pollen CFM. This product also boasts a four-step air filtration system too, as described below:
- Pre-filter – covering the True HEPA filter, it prolongs the lifetime of the core filter by trapping large pollutants such as hair, fur, and large dust.
- True HEPA filter – capturing 99.97% of particles sized at 0.3 microns such as virus particles, mold, pollen, allergens and fungi particles.
- Activated carbon filter – used for removing toxic odors such as formaldehyde and nitrogen dioxide.
- Ionizer – produces negative ions to charge particles and traps them within the machine. This feature can be switched on and off.
With this efficient filtration system, you don’t have to worry about ingesting harmful pollutants. What’s even better is that this product is able to clean 3,700 square feet in an hour! Some other notable features of this air purifier include a touch screen panel so that you can manually change the settings yourself, four fan speeds, a sleep mode, and a child lock. All of these additional product attributes make this air purifier all the more desirable especially if you have children and would like the machine to operate at a quieter operation at night.
The Medify Air MA-112 is 100% worth the price, especially in comparison to the other more expensive products that we will be reviewing in this blog post. One of the only drawbacks of this product is its bulky size, but there are wheels at the bottom, so you don’t have to worry about picking up and moving the unit when you want to relocate it. This product is definitely one of the more perfect air purifiers for your large spaces at home, so be sure to consider it while shopping.
Specifications
- Covers 3,700 sq ft
- 28” x 16” x 15”
- 32 pounds
- 360-degree air delivery
- 950 CADR
- H13 True HEPA filter
- 4 fan speeds
Sample Customer Review… I have a 3000 sqft house with a large open family room, 20′ ceilings, which opens up to a loft at the top of the stairs. The kitchen, den, living room, and dining room are all relatively open on the main floor as well. I needed something that was capable of cleaning a large space. We have two boxers and a new development being built close by us.
The construction from the development has caused an increase in dust and allergies. With two boxers I have always been concerned that our house will smell like dogs.
This unit seems to have made a noticeable improvement in air quality. I no longer smell dogs or dust. I am far less stuffy and there is noticeably less dust settling on furniture. I was dusting my desk in my office every couple of days and now sitting at my desk writing this review I am looking at my desk and monitors and there isn’t any dust. I know I haven’t dusted it in at least a week. For how things were prior to buying this air purifier that is unheard of.
When the unit is on high (#4 setting) you definitely notice it. For how much air it needs to move that is expected. If you are in the same room as it having a conversation or watching tv you can turn it down to the 1 or 2 settings and it is plenty quiet. I would definitely recommend this air purifier as I have had no negative experiences with it and it performs at or above my expectations.

8. LEVOIT LV-H134
[amazon box=”B07CP5D3LS” description=” ” rating=”4.5″]
Being one of the most affordable air purifiers in the market, the Levoit LV-H134 is great for smaller rooms including your bedroom, office, living room, kitchen, and sometimes even your whole house or apartment. An improvement from the LV-PUR131, Levoit has proven that their upgrades are for the benefit of providing better air purifiers for consumers.
Able to cover a room-sized at 1,170 square feet, this product was improved from its previous 135 CFM in its LV-PUR131 model to 312 CFM. Using a smart laser sensor, this air purifier is able to detect the number of contaminants in your air, so it can adjust its fan speed and settings accordingly. On top of this, this machine is also a lower energy-consuming product, so it is more environmentally friendly. The performance of this machine is proven by its three-stage air filtration system that is outlined below:
- Pre-filter – this nylon pre-filter captures large airborne pollutants such as pet hair, lint, fiber, pet dander, and dust. The pre-filter works to maximize the True HEPA filter lifespan.
- True HEPA filter – this filters out 99.97% of all particles sized 0.3 microns such as allergens, pollen, dust mites, and mold spores.
- Activated carbon filter – efficiently absorbs odor, formaldehyde, benzene, smoke, and VOCs.
Through its 360-degree air suction, this air purifier works to clean your air faster and more efficiently when combined with this three-stage air filtration system. In 30 minutes, it is able to clean 1,170 square foot rooms and in 18 minutes clean 710 square foot rooms. All of the contaminated air is suctioned through the bottom and all of the clean air is pushed through the top.
Compared to other air purifiers, this one can be quite loud with its sound level of 54 dB at its fastest fan speed. This can be quite obnoxious if you are looking for a product that is more on the quiet side. This is one of the only notable drawbacks of this air purifier in addition to its lack of touchscreen display or wireless features that allow you to control it from your Smartphone. Besides these missing features, the Levoit LV-H134 is a viable option, especially due to its attractive price and more than decent performance and coverage area.
Specifications
- Covers 1,170 sq ft
- H13 True HEPA filter
- 30” x 20.5” x 20.5”
- 25.9 pounds
- 54 dB
- Smart laser sensor
- 360-degree suction
Sample Customer Review… This machine is a bit bigger than I anticipated and reminds me of a Dalek. Luckily, it has not threatened anyone! It has a nice modern feel and has wheels to make moving it easy. I originally bought this because my immune system is trash and I wanted to keep the air in my home clean. I have not gotten sick since I started using it and it sucks up any smoke from my kitchen or pet odors aggressively.
It is not a deodorizer, but it does remove particulate from the air (i.e. smoke, dander, dust, pollen, etc.) which can help minimize household odors. The filtered air does have a scent to it that I find pleasant, but you can only smell that if you hover over it. I did not experience any plastic or unpleasant smells from the machine at any point. It measures impurities in your air so if you burn something, the machine will amp up the filtration until it removes the smoke from the air.
It is a little louder when amped up, but the normal cycle is nearly silent. My biggest complaint would be the price tag, but I think it was worth the investment at the end of the day. My home is open-concept so it works very well in that space, I would recommend a smaller model for individual rooms.

- 300 CFM
- 29 pounds
- HyperHEPA filters
- 4-stage air cleaning filtration system
- 320-degree air delivery
- 6 fan speeds
Sample Customer Review… The MultiGas is the best Air Purifier we have owned. We have some Austin Air units, which are great, and have had numerous others (we like to geek out on this stuff and work in the building sciences so indoor air quality is paramount but also a bit of a hobby).
The MultiGas was easy to set up and get running and the 6 speed settings are great. I love that we can schedule it to run at a higher cfm at night and slow down (so it isn’t so noisy as when running at 300 cfm) during the day. It has done a great job of making our house fresher and cleaner.
We use an AirVisual indoor air quality monitor and it is amazing how well and how quickly the MultiGas cleans the air. Even when we burned something on the stove last weekend, usually it smells in the house like cooking or grease for a day or so, but this unit really helped get rid of any cooking smells and bring down our PM from the smoke really fast.

10. Blueair Classic 680i
[amazon box=”B085B4V3DP” description=” ” rating=”4.5″]
Although the Blueair Classic 680i has the highest large room coverage compared to the other products on our best air purifiers for large room list, which is clearly proven why by its high-quality performance.
With coverage of 1,745 square feet, in the description of this product, they recommend using this unit in spaces between 700 and 800 square feet large. This air purifier has a high CADR rating of 450 and a 650 CFM airflow. At 2 ACH, the machine is able to sustain its 1,745 square foot coverage, but at 5 ACH it can only cover 698 square feet.
This would mean that its coverage is at least 40% bigger than the Alen BreatheSmart 75i! Sporting the HEPASilent technology, not only does the filtration system work to eliminate all pollutants in your air that are 0.3 microns, but it also has Dual Protection, removing contaminants such as dust, allergens, smoke, odors, and pet fur.
Although the HEPASilent technology is supposed to make the unit much quieter than other large room air purifiers, it isn’t quite successful. With 650 CFM, the sound levels are over 65 dB, which means it can be too loud for some customers.
The Blueair Classic 680i’s air quality sensors allows it to automatically adjust to the number of air contaminants and change its settings accordingly. This is called the Auto Mode, which automatically adjusts the fan speed, so it can steadily and efficiently capture all of the air pollutants to improve air quality. This air purifier can also be controlled wirelessly via your Smartphone when you use the Blueair Friend app. Here, you can monitor the air quality in real-time, adjust the fan speed, and set a timer that is to your liking.
This air purifier plays on convenience, proven by the Wi-Fi connectivity, its Auto Mode, the wheels on the bottom of the unit that promotes portability despite its bulky frame, and a touchscreen interface. Maybe these convenient features are entirely worth it to you and so you’d be willing to spend an extra hundred dollars on it. If you are hoping for better performance, the Blueair Classic 680i may take some extra consideration.

Sample Customer Review… I have struggled most of my life with asthma and allergies and have always had an air purifier in my bedroom. I’ve been through several other air purifier brands and to be honest they have all worked about the same….I get relief (but not 100%). A friend recommended Blueair to me earlier this year and I have delayed in purchasing one. I am now happy that I waited as this product was only recently released with wifi.
The instructions for connecting the air purifier to wifi are made clear, but I did give a quick call to the customer service team just to make sure I was setting everything up correctly (they were very helpful). Now that this purifier is set up and running in my room I am thrilled as to how it is working. I can absolutely tell the difference between this product and others I have had in the past. I think my favorite part of this air purifier is the ability to control it via my phone. The app is very user-friendly and it allows me to access, power, and control the air purifier remotely.
Overall I am very happy with this purchase. I like the look, the feel, and the way it is running. It was hard for me at first to drop $400 on an air purifier—however now that it is running, (and I am feeling healthier and sleeping better) I am happy with the investment. You can’t place a cost too high on your health!! I would recommend this unit to anyone looking to purchase an air purifier.

11. Austin Air HealthMate Plus
[amazon box=”B01N8WWB72″ description=” ” rating=”4.4″]
The Austin Air HealthMate Plus boasts the title of “the only clinically proven, medical-grade air purifier,” and so you can assume that it has a great reputation amongst the air purifier market. This is proven by its great coverage area and four-stage air filtration performance.
With a coverage area of 1,500 square feet, this air purifier is well suited for space such as your basement, living room, master bedroom, and others. With a 400 CFM CADR and 5 ACH, this machine can clear out the pollutants in your air at a fast rate, multiple times throughout the day. Combined with its 360-degree air intake and four-stage air filtration process, the Austin Air HealthMate Plus is a good companion to have.
- Pre-filter – removes large pollutants such as pet hair, large dust, and human hair. This pre-filter is easily washable and a permanent part of the machine.
- Medium particle pre-filter – this focuses on removing spores, molds, and pollen from the pre-filter.
- Activated carbon filter – this 15 pound activated carbon filter works on removing VOCs, benzenes, gases, odors, formaldehyde, and chemicals from your air.
- True HEPA filter – due to the two pre-filters, the 60 square foot True HEPA filter catches the particles sized 0.3 microns.
One of the only things to complain about regarding this air purifier is its sound levels. At the lowest fan setting the sound is quite low but at the highest fan setting the sound can get quite loud. Due to this, it is recommended that this product run on a lower setting the majority of the time. Another thing of note is the lack of smart features compared to other air purifiers. It can’t read the number of contaminants in the room and adjust accordingly and does not support wireless connection.
Specifications
- Covers 1,500 sq ft
- 14.5” x 14.5” x 23”
- 52.9 pounds
- 400 CFM CADR
- True HEPA filter
- 360-degree suction
Sample Customer Review… I’ll beg to differ with the reviews that say that this machine is noisy. It has three fan speeds. At the lowest speed, it’s quiet—not inaudible, but quiet. I have it in the dining room, and on low speed, I can barely hear it in the adjacent kitchen. I turned it up to medium, which is more audible but not unpleasant, although if I had dinner guests I’d turn it down to low.
I use it as white noise to mask the sounds of traffic. I have a similar machine, the Bedroom Machine, in my bedroom, where I keep it on low–medium would probably be tolerable, but it’s a bit much for sleeping. Toleration for fan noise may be learned–we’ve had air purifiers for years, and the Austin is no noisier than previous ones, even though it’s two or three times the size.

Sample Customer Review… I ordered this Molekule air purifier for the main living area in a 2 bedroom apartment. We have an open floor plan and it fits the space well. I LOVE the modern, sleek design and was so impressed with the packaging when it arrived. The setup process was really easy to get it started and synced to my app. I love smart home technology so this was a perfect fit for my home.
The handle makes it easy to carry around the home to find the perfect spot. On the app, you can see a % of filter usage and know exactly when to replace your filter. It also comes with one more which is nice. When you go through the setup process, you are offered an opportunity to set up an auto subscription of filters if you want to, but it’s optional. It’s not too loud and I hardly notice that it’s on, so it’s not distracting at all.

13. Sharp FP-A80UW
[amazon box=”B0067X12EW” description=” ” rating=”4.6″]
Effective and reliable, the Sharp FP-A80UW air purifier is suitable for spaces of up to 455 square feet and is about mid-range in terms of both price and performance. The Sharp FP-A80UW also boasts a unique 3-stage air filtration process: a True HEPA Filter which is meant to catch 99.97% of common airborne contaminants such as dust and allergens, an activated carbon filter to reduce odors and certain chemicals, and a unique Plasmacluster ionizer technology which will further reduce the number of airborne contaminants in the room (this can be turned on and off).
The Sharp FP-A80UW is also ARB certified, and it produces 5x less ozone than the industry standard. The fan speed automatically adjusts based on a smart sensor, increasing this air purifier’s efficiency even further. The Sharp FP-A80UW is undoubtedly a great pick!
Specifications
- Covers 455 sq feet
- 17.6 pounds
- 9.6” x 24.4” x 15.9”
- 1-year warranty
- Automatic fan speed
Sample Customer Review… I have owned the Sharp FP-A80U-W for about 4 years now and I love this air purifier. Great middle-of-the-road air purification buy. Not a $1,000 unit but not your Walmart $100 unit either. I have trouble with allergens and dust at night and I now run this in my bedroom every night.
If I turn the purifier on before I go in, my nose immediately clears up as soon as I enter the room. The filters are a bit pricey but very easy to change. I generally re-wash the carbon filters after a few months and extend the life of them that way.
The HEPA one is supposed to be every 2 years. Really, no complaints, I just had to cover some of the lights with electrical tape since I couldn’t shut all of them off (you can turn some of the lights off like the big Plasmacutter lights by holding the Plasmacutter button down for 3 seconds plus). Probably really a 4-star unit just due to some fan noise (but I am very picky about noise), but it cleans the air so seemingly well and I breathe so much better I am giving it 5 stars.
I’ve enjoyed many nights of much better nose breathing sleep since buying the Sharp FP-A80U-W and highly recommend it for the price!

Things to Consider Before Buying
We know that some of the terms and acronyms being used to describe the specs and features of an air purifier unit can be confusing. Some of them are really important to consider and understand before buying the right air purifier for you. Here is a combined list of all of the different acronyms and features that you should be looking out for while shopping.
Cubic feet per minute (CFM) and Clear Air Delivery Rate (CADR)
CFM stands for cubic feet per minute, where higher CFM means more cubic feet of air purified per minute. In conjunction with CFM, you have to consider CADR also, which stands for Clear Air Delivery Rate. It is the most important feature to consider when buying an air purifier because it dictates how quickly and effectively an air purifier will clean your indoor air.
For example, if your air purifier states that it has a maximum airflow of 200 CFM, this means that it can process up to 200 cubic feet per minute. But if the machine also has a CADR rating of 190 CFM, this means that the air purifier can effectively clean only 190 cubic feet per minute. The rest of the 10 CFM will not be cleaned until the second air purifier cycle. When the CFM and CADR are around the same numbers, then this makes it all the better.
Air Changes per Hour (ACH)
The second most important feature that you should be aware of is Air Changes per Hour, or ACH. The ACH tells us how many times an air purifier filters the air in a room within one hour. For example, if the ACH rating of an air purifier is three, that means that it cleans the room’s full volume three times within the span of an hour. If the air purifier has a higher ACH, it means the purifier is more effective than others at filtering out and cleaning your indoor air.
But you also have to keep in mind the number of square feet in conjunction with the ACH as well. For example, if your air purifier has a coverage area of 1,000 square feet and has a rating of 2 ACH, this means that the machine is capable of cleaning 1,000 square feet worth of air two times within the span of an hour. If the same air purifier is in a smaller room of 500 square feet and has a rating of 4 ACH, then this means that due to the smaller size of the room the machine can clean 500 square feet worth of air four times within an hour.
Noise level or decibel units (dB)
Another feature that you should be aware of before purchasing is the dB, or the decibel units, of the air purifier at its various fan speeds and levels. For your reference, the level of noise within a quiet room measures at about 30 dB, and a typical conversation measures at about 60 dB. Preferably, when you are choosing an air purifier, the lower the dB the better, especially if the machine will be in your bedroom or similarly quiet spaces.
High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters
HEPA stands for High Efficiency Particulate Air and is used to describe any filter that can trap and filter out 99.97% of particulates that are 0.3 microns. 0.3 microns is the most penetrating particle size, meaning that they are the best at evading air filters compared to smaller or bigger particles.
But what is “True HEPA”? This is a marketing term to differentiate whether the product meets European or American HEPA standards. In Europe, they are allowed to manufacture HEPA filters that only capture 85% of particles that are the size of 0.3 microns. But in the U.S., if you want to be HEPA certified, the filter must be able to capture 99.97% of the same sized particles. Thus, “True HEPA” and “Ultra HEPA” are what marketers refer to as the American HEPA standard that is being used in consumer products.
Oftentimes, HEPA filters are used together with another kind of filtration system, such as activated carbon fibers, so that there is a second line of defense to catch the other super-small contaminants like fumes, smoke, chemicals, dust, allergens, mold spores, pet dander, bacteria, and pollen.
Photo Electrochemical Oxidation (PECO) filters
But what sets HEPA filters apart from PECO filters? PECO stands for Photo Electrochemical Oxidation, and it builds on the existing solutions that other filtration systems already have in place. PECO filters use mechanical filtration to clean out the pollutants in your air, but it also takes an extra step by destroying those pollutants through an oxidation process. Without all of the fancy science behind it, what PECO technology essentially does is take all air pollutants, trap them in the fibers of the filter, and convert them into carbon dioxide and water.
Activated carbon filter
The purpose of a HEPA filter is to catch all of the solid contaminants floating through the air but it doesn’t trap and capture any gases, odors, or chemicals. This is what activated carbon fiber is for, its most significant purpose is for reducing the number of odors that can hang in the air. Activated carbon filters also work to remove volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the air as well, such as cleaning products, paints, furniture, carpeting, building materials, office equipment, and cleaning equipment.
Air quality monitor
When an air purifier is operating to clean your home’s air, it is extremely helpful to know the air quality in real-time. The air quality monitor is useful for knowing what kinds of pollutants are in the air and what you can actively do to reduce the number of contaminants. Most of the time, these monitors go hand-in-hand with the Auto Mode, which automatically adjust an air purifier’s settings to maximize efficiency. Most of the time, the air quality will be displayed through the colored LED lights on the unit or an actual reading in an app.
Coverage area
Coverage area is especially important for larger rooms. For example, if a room is 1,000 square feet large and you purchase a unit that is meant for rooms that are 700 square feet large, then the air purifier will be underpowered for space, and it won’t effectively clean the air. The larger the space you are trying to clean, the greater the CADR rating you will need. If you are worried about how often the air purifier cleans the air in the room, you also may want to consider higher ACH if the room is exceptionally large.
Portability
If you will move the unit around often, for example from room to room, then you should consider purchasing an air purifier that has wheels or a handle on it so it is easily portable.
Maintenance
To make sure that your air purifier lives a long life, you should replace the filter regularly. Most filters have a replacement indicator to notify you when the filter needs a change. Pre-filters are mostly washable with a damp cloth or a vacuum so that you don’t have to constantly replace them throughout the year. One of the downsides to HEPA filters and activated carbon filters is that they need to be replaced many times a year.
Conclusion
It is important to keep the indoor air clean, especially when you suffer from asthma or or allergies. For your friends and family members who are allergic to the household cat, you’ll be doing them a huge favor by adding an air purifier to your home. Our top choice for the best air purifier for large rooms is the Alen BreatheSmart 75i due to its balanced CFM and CADR, lower noise levels, and great cleaning utility. Although this is our recommendation, it is important to purchase the right air purifier that will not only clean the entirety of the air in any of your rooms but also offers the right combination of features within your budget.
