1. Valhalla Java Bagged Coffee Grounds

Valhalla Java Bagged Coffee Grounds has a smooth dark roast profile with a high level of natural caffeine. It was created as a tribute to guitarist Zakk Wylde and was meant to reflect the melody of his guitar riffs: smooth and powerful. It is ideal for those who like a strong roast with an extra energy boost kick. These powerful arabica and robusta coffee beans originate from Indonesia and Central America and are roasted in the United States. They are certified organic by the USDA and Fairtrade.

This dark roast has undertones of dark chocolate and a nutty aroma. This roast is not ideal for espresso machines as they are ground and you will not get the full-bodied flavor so you will have to use the pour-over method. If you are not satisfied, the company offers a money-back guarantee.

  • Pure, smooth taste
  • Depth of mellow flavor
  • Consistency and freshness
  • No bitter acidity
  • Smooth profile
  • High natural caffeine
  • USDA Organic certified and Fairtrade
  • Money-back guarantee
Cons
  • Not ground or ideal for espresso
  • Pricey

Sample customer review… I’ve gone through a lot of coffees before settling on Death Wish. Originally, I was drinking their namesake blend but after deciding to finally try Valhalla Java I don’t know if I’ll be going back. The caffeine rush isn’t as strong as their Death Wish blend, but it’s still significantly stronger than a typical cup of coffee and does a decent job of perking me up. The flavor is where this blend really shines, though. It has a prominent, very unique taste that causes it to stand out over pretty much everything else I’ve tried. It’s almost nutty with hints of chocolate. The bitter is low, and instead, it has a mild sweet flavor. I can’t recommend this coffee enough, it’s truly worthy of a Norse god.

2. Starbucks Blonde Roast Ground Coffee

If you are new to black coffee, or even drinking coffee in general, a light roast is not a bad option to start with. Starbucks makes their blonde roast called Starbucks Veranda Blend. Since this is a mellow, and lighter-bodied roast it is easy to drink black. Starbucks is a popular brand so it’s probably intuitive what type of quality you are going to get. It is also one of the more affordable roasts on this list at a decent-sized bag.

Specifications

  • Brand: Starbucks
  • 100% Arabica Coffee Beans
  • Ground beans
  • Light roast
  • Caffeinated
  • 28 oz bag
Pros
  • Large bag size
  • Reduced acidic taste
  • Available in K cup
  • Mellow and approachable flavors for novice to black coffee
  • Easy to find
Cons
  • It may be considered weak if you are used to a dark roast

Sample customer review… This coffee is my go-to for the past 6 months or so. The quality of the beans compared to the price is probably the best I have ever seen. It’s a huge bag and lasts me about 2 weeks before it’s time to reorder (I drink a lot of espresso…) I use these with my Flair espresso machine with an automatic burr grinder. It produces crema comparable to much more “premium” options and has an incredible flavor profile. I still buy local beans on occasion, but these beans will always be my go-to!

It is more ideal for those that are new to black coffee and looking to experiment. The mild flavor is not bitter like other black coffees and will help beginners acquire a taste for black coffee. Available in a 5 lb bag, this coffee will last a while.

  • Robust
  • Bright profile with medium acidity
  • Ideal for beginners
Cons

  • Only available in an 80 oz/ 5lb bag

Sample customer review… This is a great flavor coffee. I used to drink Koffee Kult’s Colombian Huila all the time until they price hiked their coffee beans. I came to this brand and tried the Panama Boquet flavor and it’s fantastic. Everyone that tries it loves it; low acidity, smooth, great flavor; to be fair their Kona Blend and Jamaican Blue Mountain are also delicious; Jamaican Blue Mountain is awesome for cold brew.

We have never agreed on coffee until we found Koffee Kult! We’ve had the dark, medium, Columbian, and one other kind I can’t remember and I would give everyone 5 stars. I don’t take the time to review very many things ever, but I just had to take a few minutes for this superior coffee! Try it! Seriously. 😊

Sample customer review… I have worked in coffee shops for many years and am a bit of a snob when it comes to coffee. I got this coffee as my espresso roast on a whim because, pound-wise, it was actually a good deal. I normally use Pete’s espresso and hate deviating. This was a great coffee. Not only is it fair-trade, it’s good, too. I found it to be medium-bold but not bitter at all. It produced a thick and sweet crema and I didn’t even have to adjust my grinder. It has a good flavor to it and I would describe it as almost nutty. I already ordered more and am happy to say I will likely stick with Kicking Horse for a while.

As this coffee is on the expensive side it is well worth every penny to not get a single ounce of acid reflux since drinking Lifeboost and I drink a lot of coffee. Not only is it low acid but the only way I can describe the taste is clean. I happened to run out for 2 days and tried another brand and both myself and my husband were like yuck, I got heartburn right away and we both did not like the taste including name brands. Thank God distribution is fast! When I think of the work that goes into bringing this special coffee to us it is worth every penny! years of acid reflux and now none. Cons
  • Expensive
  • Only available in 32 oz bag

Sample customer review… This coffee is simply fantastic. It’s almost like drinking dark chocolate. I’ve felt no need to use sugar and just a little cream. I have used this in the Aeropress and made both coffee and espresso with perfect results. Now for the little things. The bag it comes in is great. Easy pull tab to open it and a nice resealable liner that is thick and not flimsy. Also, a valve on the back to squeeze the air out. The bag when opened is actually like a spout so it is easy to pout out the beans without trying to funnel them. Sounds silly but I appreciate little design choices like that.

Sample customer review… I stopped drinking coffee when I became pregnant and was doing fine until about 2 weeks ago when an insatiable craving for coffee overwhelmed me. I’m 6 months pregnant and haven’t had caffeine in months and didn’t want to start drinking regular caffeinated coffee now, but this craving…. wasn’t going to go away. I’ve heard so many negative things about decaf being not good for you, so I figured there HAS to be some kind of non-toxic decaf out there somewhere that also happens to taste decent. I found No Fun Jo Decaf on Amazon and the ratings were great. It’s organic, Swiss water processed, and Fair Trade certified, so I decided to try it. I got the whole beans and shipping was super fast with my Prime. It came. I grinded. I brewed. I sipped. Oh… my… gosh. Yes! I love it! When my cravings first hit me, I took a trip down the road to a major chain coffee shop and got a tall decaf…. it didn’t quite do it for me. That first sip just wasn’t as good as I had hoped it would be. So disappointed. Then No Fun Decaf Jo came into my life. My insatiable craving was satiated, and all was right with the world again. I’ll be drinking this throughout my pregnancy and while I’m nursing, so this will be brewing at my house for the next couple of years. Then I’ll be trying out their caffeinated beans, which also have great reviews on here. Thanks, Jo! You made this pregnant lady very happy!

Sample customer review… These beans are delicious and my stomach is so thankful for them! I love my two daily coffees, but lately, I’ve been getting pretty bad heartburn. I started reading about low acidic coffees and how they can be a game-changer for people who have stomach problems after drinking coffee. Volcanica’s blend came up as the #2 low acidic coffee on a couple of reviews and was much more reasonably priced than the #1 (life boost), so I thought I would try it. I cannot tell you what a difference it has made! It’s so rich and silky/smooth, without tasting burnt or too toasty like I think some of these other low acidic coffees can taste. It makes a good espresso but I think even better in the Chemex. It’s high-quality coffee… for reallz. I will be buying again and I would recommend that anyone else who loves their coffee but has digestive problems from coffee try it. And even if your tummy can take all the coffees, it’s still worth trying if you like a medium/dark toasty roast!

Volcanica Kenya AA Coffee Beans are grown in the volcanic soil of East Africa and then roasted in Atlanta. This medium roast is natural with no use of pesticides or additives. It has a floral aroma and fruity overtones. With a wine-toned acidity, it delivers notes of citrus, berries, and wine. This adds serious depth to the cup but it is not ideal if you are looking for a bold flavor. Delivering a rich, balanced body without bitterness, Volcanica has earned the reputation of high-quality coffee producers.

The AA in Volcanica Kenya AA Coffee Beans is a reference to the coffee bean grade. This means that they are larger than the average coffee bean. This is the highest rank that Kenyan beans can receive and is widely considered one of the best coffees in the world. Despite its hefty price tag, it is worth trying and comes with a 100% satisfaction guarantee by the manufacturer.

Sample customer review… WOW was my thought when I popped the bag open and caught my first whiff like this is the kind of smell that puts a smile on your face in the morning! I just started drinking my coffee black about 6 months ago after decades of sugar and cream-filled cups all day every day, BIG coffee drinker most of my life but has been interesting in experiencing coffee seemingly for the first time all over again. I have unfortunately become somewhat of a coffee snob as now it’s ALL about the natural flavor and boy does this one do it for me! Supremely delicious and a WONDERFUL natural sweetness, I have found myself favoring Guatemalan beans because of the natural sweetness that I find so tasty. This may be the best I’ve had to date in terms of natural sweetness and may just very well be the best tasting coffee (for me of course) I’ve had since kicking the cream and sugar. Most DEF will be ordering this stuff on a consistent basis!!

12. Death Wish Coffee

Death Wish Coffee is intense, bold, and most of all mouthwatering and will have you feeling excited to wake up in the morning. The artisanal flavor and high-quality energy will give you the caffeine boost that you need to get through your day. Every bag of Death Wish is fair, organic, and USDA certified so you can feel good about your coffee every time you take a sip.

Specifications

  • 16 oz bag
  • USDA certified
  • Organic
  • Fair Trade
  • Caffeinated
  • Dark roast blend of Arabica and Robusta beans
Pros
  • Bold aroma
  • Intense flavor
  • Sweet undertones
  • Hints of cherry and chocolate in every cup
  • High caffeine
Cons
  • High in price

Sample customer review… Great coffee, but don’t let the name fool you! When I first saw the name of this coffee, I got the impression that it was super-strong. While it is a caffeinated coffee, don’t expect it to give you the jitters or a jolt that will send you to the emergency room! It’ll wake you up in the morning, and it has a very nice flavor that isn’t bitter and doesn’t leave a lingering aftertaste that makes you wish you hadn’t drank it like some coffees do. Obviously, it’s pricey, so if you’re on a budget and your budget is relatively limited for coffee, this may not be for you or maybe you only want to drink it on special occasions. You can buy it as a subscription and save an item and save a little money if you’re into that. It’s head and shoulders better than the typical store-bought coffee that I’ve tasted, which may have to do with it be organic. Therefore, if you’re a caffeinated coffee drinker and looking for something different, give this a try. I wouldn’t worry too much about it being overly caffeinated; the name is more of an attention-getter than a description.

Buying Guide: What to Consider When Making the Switch to Black Coffee

There are so many great black coffee options available that it is almost impossible to list them all, but this is a great starting point for novice black coffee drinkers who are looking to experiment. As you become more accustomed to the flavor of black coffee you may wish to look for blends that have a stronger brew or acidic profile.

Black Coffee is Good For Your Health

Black coffee is better for your health than coffee that uses a lot of creamers. This will reduce the number of calories and added sugar in your diet.  Black coffee also contains antioxidants and has been linked to exploratory studies that suggest there may be a link between black coffee and reducing the risk of developing Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

Amazing Flavor

Many people tend to think that black coffee tastes awful and bitter because they never started high-quality beans meant to be consumed without cream or milk. Many black coffee blends contain fruity, sweet, or robust overtones such as elements like citrus, chocolate, and blueberries.

Strength Types

Enjoying black coffee is something that is acquired. Anyone can enjoy black coffee if they are exposed to the right kind. The strength of the coffee is determined by the type of roast, whether it is light, medium, or dark. This affects how strong the coffee tastes. You should also consider how acidic the coffee is as that will leave the bitter aftertaste novice black coffee drinkers tend not to like but is acquired over time.

Conclusion

There are many options for good quality black coffee. It will take some experimentation to find what your strength and flavor preference is, but this list a great place to start.
