Sample Customer Review…I got this with zero experience sewing and was able to use it. I am a single dad with girls who wanted custom dresses, blankets, and dress-up clothes. I had absolutely no idea what I was doing, but this sewing machine is so simple and easy to use I was quickly able to begin sewing dresses, shirts, skirts, blankets, etc with this thing. If I can learn on this machine anyone can. It is simple to thread, fill and load bobbins with enough stitch options to get you through, and I didn’t even know some of those words existed or what they meant before I got this machine.

If you’re a beginner looking to get a base knowledge of sewing and to have broad capabilities without spending a ton of money, this is definitely for you. I can’t recommend it enough. Sample Customer Review…This was so easy to use. I have never sewn a day in my life and I found it fairly easy to learn to use. I did watch a youtube video for guidance because I am not familiar with the ins and outs of sewing and using a sewing machine. My first project was sewing a torn shirt for my son, and I was pretty proud of myself for it! I think this is great for any beginner, child, or adult! I can’t wait to take on more projects. Great gift idea and I would recommend it.

Sample Customer Review…I bought this sewing machine after reading reviews about its ease of operation and that it was a good machine for beginners. I have never sewed a thing in my life, and I have certainly never used a sewing machine. I had a project I needed this for and it was easier to buy a machine than try to find time to use someone else’s. This machine was incredibly easy to set up. It comes with step-by-step directions and diagrams. It took me about 45 minutes to set up, again because I had absolutely no idea what I was doing, but it was no fault to the directions at all. Once the machine was up and running, I was able to complete my project with ease. I was sewing some heavy-duty fleece fabric and had zero issues with the machine. I was really impressed with how my son’s Jedi robe turned out. I would recommend this machine to anyone looking for a simple machine. I am not sure what kind of limitations it has for the advanced sewers, but for basic, it’s perfect!

Sample Customer Review…I like this machine because it’s easy to use. I have been sewing for many years and now I’m becoming a more versatile seamstress. I’ve made 2 dresses much faster than on my regular machine. I’ve embroidered many different items with ease. I would tell experienced and novice sewers to buy this machine.

6. Singer 4411

This is a very powerful machine that can work with thick fabrics, like leather. This machine has a 105 W motor that can take on just about any project that you decide to take on. With this machine, you can create up to 1,000 stitches per minute and still keep your machine at top quality. This machine will always remain steady and never skip a stitch, regardless of what speed you use. Also, you can easily change the feet of this machine; it comes with 9 snap-on presser feet that you can use to make your projects the best ones ever made.

Keep in mind, this machine is not as versatile as many other models; it only has 11 built-in stitches. Plus, the needle threader has to be manually operated. Of course, it is pretty simple after you get the hang of it.

Specifications

  • 11 built-in stitches
  • 4 decorative stitching options
  • 6 basic stitching options
  • Adjustable needle position
  • Accessory kit included
  • Sturdy case
Pros
  • More powerful than other models
  • Can make quality stitches at top speed
  • Easy to use
Cons
  • Not versatile
  • Manual needle threader

Sample Customer Review…I disposed of my industrial Singer to create more space but soon started missing it for sewing things like denim jeans. I read about the Singer 4411 and decided on getting one. I was very surprised with how sturdy it was and the jeans job I had for it was completed without any problem. As a retired sewing machine mechanic, I am fully aware that the rigidity of the frame is very important to the performance of a sewing machine and the Singer 4411 has this and doesn’t take up valuable space. Well done singer for your effective design of this product. Sewing machines can be temperamental and no machine does everything, but this product gives me the confidence that it will serve me for many years.

7. Brother CS7000i

This machine is highly recommended for people who want to learn how to make quilts. This machine comes with a large table and a bunch of stitch options that are made specifically for quilting. In fact, there are 70 built-in stitches altogether, including decorative ones, unique stitches made for quilting, and seven styles of one-step, auto-size buttonholes. Plus, this machine also comes with an automatic needle threader, which is a life-saver, especially for beginners. You can also adjust the sewing speed on this machine. Lastly, there is a quick set-up bobbin that allows you to start sewing when you first get the machine.

While this machine is indeed great for quilting, keep in mind that it is not ideal for heavy-duty sewing. Also, this machine is bulky and hard to carry. If you want a sewing machine that you can travel with or take with you to your sewing classes, this is probably not the right model for you.

Specifications

  • 2″ LCD display
  • Wide table
  • 70 built-in stitches
  • Automatic needle threader
  • Free technical support
  • Jam resistant top drop-in bobbin
Pros
  • Variety of stitch applications
  • Easy-to-use buttonholes
  • Automatic needle threader
  • Adjustable speed
  • Easy-to-use
Cons
  • Not for heavy-duty sewing
  • Heavy

Sample Customer Review…I sincerely love this machine! I usually use this machine for making my own clothes, accessories (bags, home items, gifts, etc.), and shooting DIY video tutorials. In all scenarios, it has proven to be an excellent workhorse. The machine is lightweight, very user-friendly, and comes with a generous amount of feet/accessories. If you have any doubts about using the machine, the user manual is seriously your best friend! It’s easy to be a little suspicious of the quality because of the lower price-point, but I would recommend this machine to both beginners and more advanced sewers that are in need of a reliable home machine.

Sample Customer Review…It is amazing! I made a shirt for my son. The stitches are perfect. The auto knot and thread cutting feature work well. The buttonholes are simple and come out beautiful. The owner’s manual is easy to read and explains the stitches well. I also purchased the free-motion quilt accessory kit. I am just learning to free-motion quilt, and this machine gave me very professional-looking results. There is not one thing that I don’t love about this machine. I shopped at my local sewing store– really wanted to support a locally owned business, but they couldn’t come close to this price.

9. Singer 4423

This machine is very easy to use. It has 23 built-in stitches and an automatic needle threader. Additionally, it has a plethora of accessories, including bobbins, a buttonhole foot, a quilting guide, an all-purpose foot, needles, and much more. There is also a 25-year warranty with this machine, although there is a good chance you might never need it because of the quality materials.

Specifications

  • 14.5 Pounds
  • 23 built-in stitches
  • Automatic needle threader
  • Max speed of 100 stitches/minute
  • Accessories included
  • 25 Year Limited Warranty
Pros
  • Automatic needle threader
  • 23 built-in stitches
  • 1,100 stitches per minute
  • Plethora of accessories included
  • 25-year warranty
Cons
  • Can be noisy

Sample Customer Review…I love this machine. This Singer is a nice, simple machine that works very well on heavy fabric. My first project on it was sewing new cushion covers for my patio furniture….with heavy outdoor fabric. I had piping on them and everything, so sometimes I was sewing thru 5 layers and this machine did a great job. It doesn’t have 2 billion fancy stitches (which I would never use), but it does have a few…which I may find a use for! and it has the basic stitches I need. I’m really happy with it.

10. Singer 7258

You can learn how to sew with this machine very easily. It also comes with lots of accessories, including 10 presser feet, 100 built-in stitches, 13 needle positions, and an LED screen. You can also adjust the speed and tension of this machine.

Specifications

  • 14.6 Pounds
  • 120V
  • Adjustable stitch length
  • Adjustable stitch width
  • 25 Year Limited Warranty
Pros
  • Programmable needle
  • Plenty of automatic settings
  • 10 presser feet
  • 25-year warranty
Cons
  • Can be expensive

Sample Customer Review…I’m a beginner sewer and have been teaching myself. This machine has been great. It is very easy to thread. It has a ton of stitch patterns to choose from. I have only used the basic stitches needed to mend a few clothes. I haven’t gotten into using all of the fancy designs, but I did play around with testing a few of them and they seemed to work properly once you got the hang of feeding it through the machine at the right pace. Also, I love the clear bobbin cover! That helps to keep track of when your bobbin thread is getting low and it’s time to replenish. It has the option to have your needle stop up or down with the push of a button, you can set your sewing speed (slow for us beginners and speed it up once you get better), a reverse stitch button, an automatic needle threader (which took some time to figure out but now I love!), and it comes with an assortment of presser foots. As I said, I’m a newbie, so I haven’t used all the presser foots and aren’t even sure if I know what all of them are used for. I think for the price and all the options you get, it’s a great deal! The machine seems to be well made and sturdy. Plus all of the options and gadgets are nice.

11. Singer M1500 Sewing Machine

The M1500 model comes with all of the features that a beginner could need. Not only are there 57 stitch options, but the sewing machine also comes with an instructional DVD. Weighing in at 12 pounds, this machine is easy to transport anywhere that you may need it.

It also comes with many useful features and accessories ideal for beginners. There are adjustable stitch sizes and a built-in needle threader. The accessories included are needles, bobbins, a seam ripper, sewing machine tools, and more.

Specifications

  • 57 stitch options
  • LED lighting
  • 110V
  • 65+ accessories included
  • 12.4lbs
Pros
  • Many stitch options
  • Lightweight
  • Simple
  • Comes with instructional DVD
  • Quiet
Cons
  • May skip stitches
  • Not heavy-duty

Sample Customer Review…Great sewing machine. Easy to operate for beginners, but has also been designed for serious sewing! Does not have all the bells and whistles that you find on expensive machines, but definitely has features/stitch patterns that are probably all that will be used the majority of the time. The exterior is plastic, but internally it is all metal. It will last a long time in regular use but would recommend a heavier duty machine for hard/ very thick cloth, or prolonged heavy use like quilting.

Are you a beginner that wants to start making quilts? If so, this sewing machine may be the best option for you. The machine has a large table that is extendable, has many decorative stitches, and comes with a walking foot.

This sewing machine is not only affordable, but the heavyweight makes the machine sturdy enough for quilting. The drop-in top bobbin and automatic needle threader also make this model perfect for beginners.

Specifications

  • 15.87lbs
  • 37 built-in stitches
  • Free technical support
  • Included accessories
  • Automatic needle threader
  • Top drop-in bobbin
Pros
  • Many stitch options
  • Automatic needle threader
  • Free arm
  • Drop-in top bobbin
  • Simple features
  • Bright light

Sample Customer Review…I’m just learning to sew, and I’m thoroughly enjoying this sewing machine! The instructional DVD–combined with the manual–helped me get started, and by watching various tutorials on YouTube, I’ve been able to successfully complete several simple projects. Even though the Brother XR3774 has an amazing array of features, it’s not at all intimidating. It’s easy enough for a beginner like myself to use, and I’m excited to know that it will allow me to do far more complicated projects as my skills improve. Very pleased with my purchase!

Buying Guide: Things To Consider When Purchasing A Starter Sewing Machine

Automatic Needle Threader

An automatic threader will thread the needle for you so that you won’t get frustrated spending the time threading the needle by hand. This makes the learning process for beginners much easier and is one of the top features that a beginner should seek out in a sewing machine.

Built-In Stitches

Beginners will want a machine with at least 10-20 built-in stitches. Most beginner projects will only need around this many stitches. As you advance, you may require a sewing machine with more built-in stitches. Be sure to think about your goals in sewing to determine how many built-in stitches that you would want in your sewing machine.

Top Drop-In Bobbin

A drop-in bobbin system loads a new bobbin into the machine and is the easiest way to reload the bobbin. The other option, a front-loading bobbin system, is much more complicated and therefore more time-consuming than the top drop-in system. For beginners, a top drop-in system would be much easier to learn.

Number of Stitches

As a beginner, you typically only need to focus on 2 different stitches: a zigzag and a straight stitch. However, the more advanced that you become, the more stitches you’ll utilize. If you plan to only use the sewing machine for simple projects or are only planning on learning beginner techniques, a machine with fewer stitch options may be for you. However, if you plan on improving your sewing skills over time, getting a machine with more stitch options may save you money and hassle in the long run.

Weight

Think about where you will be using your sewing machine to determine the proper weight for your sewing lifestyle. If you are going to be transporting it a lot (bringing it to classes, a friend’s house, etc…), you will want to consider a lighter weight. You may also want to consider purchasing a sewing machine with a handle on it to make it easier to travel with.

Ease of Use

As a beginner, your first machine should be simple and easy to use; it should be sturdy, durable, and have helpful features. To make sure it’s easy to use and understand, you may want to avoid a sewing machine that has complicated features that are likely to get a beginner confused.

Conclusion

Hopefully, you have an idea of what you feel is the best starter sewing machine! This is an exciting adventure to tackle for your first time, and I know you’ll be ready. With these easy-to-use, simple sewing machines, you’ll be improving your skills in no time!
