With these filters, you must change it out each month, as it will fill up with the unwanted particles, and then begin to push those into your home. A HEPA filter system lasts about 2-4 years. Changing out your filter is very important, no matter the type. When determining which filter is better, a little tip is that the higher the MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) rating, the better the filter performance is. HEPA filters tend to have the highest ratings, but some HEPAs are only compatible with an HVAC system. Make sure you research if an HVAC is needed, before making your decision.

Activated Carbon Technology

An activated carbon filter consists of porous and processed carbon, which is essential for absorbing unwanted air impurities. This type of filter is one of the oldest and was first used as a water purification method. To quickly get scientific, carbon filters have been chemically engineered to have a lot of pores that are designed to catch pollutants. The carbon not only catches the pollutants but eliminates them, so no trace is shot back into the air. One trait of carbon filters is the ability to absorb formaldehyde from furniture and flooring. Formaldehyde can be extremely hurtful to people who suffer from MCS, and these filters are very helpful in combating that. Carbon filters not only remove pet dander, odor, and dust but also simple household products that have chemical residue. This is great for people who suffer from asthma, the elderly, children, and simply put, everyone. It is important to be breathing the cleanest air possible, and many overlook that household cleaning items are full of harmful chemicals. The only disadvantage is that some models struggle with eliminating irritants that are far away from the filter itself, as it is more effective to the closest air.

UV Technology

This type of purification method is ideal for killing bacteria and viruses, more so than riding unwanted air pollution. When an air purifier utilizes this technology, it will be installed with a UV lamp that helps to destroy all of the dangerous viruses that are circulating through the air. It is extremely rare for an air purifier to only come with UV technology. More often than not, they are joined by either a carbon filter or HEPA filter first to eliminate the odors, dander, and overall air pollution. After all of that removal takes place, is when the UV light can shine, eliminating the bacteria and viruses from your home. Together, these filters complement each other.
