1. AeroPress Coffee and Espresso Maker

It goes without saying that the AeroPress has an incredible taste, coming top of the list for taste year after year. This brewer is very versatile, not only can you produce smooth espresso shots in addition to tasteful, full cups. The taste is so great that it is not uncommon to use this same brewer at home, the portability of this mug allows it to also be used for camping trips. Cleaning is never an issue as it is as fast as you like since the squeegee action allows for effective cleaning without needing extra water.

As with anything good, it takes a bit of trial and error to perfect the technique, as it includes more pieces than most other coffee makers in our list. A drawback with this brewer is you will require the special filters; AeroPress includes a good amount nonetheless. Although it may not be for everyone, we are sure you will appreciate the versatility and delicious results of this brewer.

Specifications

  • Weight: Press alone: 7.98 oz. Press + spoon + stirrer: 9.39 oz
  • Type: Pour over/ Press Hybrid.
  • Capacity: 1 cup
  • Material: BPA-free polypropylene
  • Made in the U.S.A.
  • Product Dimensions: 4.75 x 4.5 x 11.75 inches
Pros
  • Amazing flavor
  • Versatile
  • Very portable
  • Simple cleanup
  • Fun
Cons
  • A lot of little pieces to keep track of
  • On the heavy side for backpacking

Sample Customer Review…I’m really into specialty coffee and I have been doing pour-over style coffee for years and got this for fun. After my first brew, I realized this is my new favorite way to make coffee. It makes a very balanced cup that has the clean paper filtered flavor of a pour-over but with a bit more body and sweetness. It is very easy to brew and makes the quality of your grinder less relevant since it uses immersion. If you grind fine you can brew in about 1-2 minutes which is incredible. It also is insanely easy to clean. You just unscrew the cap, pop out the coffee puck and filter in one push and rinse it off.

Best coffee-related purchase I’ve ever made.

2. Eureka! Camp Café

This coffee maker is perfect for campers who are traveling in larger groups as it makes up to 12 cups of coffee. Although producing large quantities of coffee, its Flux Ring technology helps increase the rate at which the water boils, allowing for 60 ounces of water to boil in six minutes. The durable hard-anodized aluminum pot and carafe produce a weather-resistant product that is perfect for unexpected weather while camping.

This maker is also an excellent choice for backpackers as the filter holder and carafe are easily stored within the lightweight kettle. Although intended for coffee, this product’s versatility enables the cooking of foods such as rice and pasta.

Specifications

  • Material – hard anodized aluminum
  • Weight – 0.48 Pounds
  • Dimensions – 8 x 8 x 8 inches
  • Capacity – 12 cups
Pros
  • Large serving sizes
  • Silicone base and handle to prevent burns
  • Strainer included
  • Lightweight and sturdy
  • Versatile
Cons
  • Hard to transport
  • May leak

Sample customer review…Toss out that old stainless or enamel percolator, unless you’re an old-school cowboy. Having a cup of coffee has been important when camping- warms you up, makes you feel human after sleeping on the ground. I’ve had a Stansport percolator and tried some other glass french press systems. Messy, fragile, or did not produce expected results. There are quite a few nice features here- packs neatly w/ nesting storage- and is durable to pack away with your gear. The common #4 filters are easy to come by. The fins on the bottom help heat the water quickly. You’ll have 2-4 cups boiling in just a few minutes. Easy to clean. Also used it to boil hotdogs (fit 6 easily), and another night-made macaroni and cheese. Careful when pouring through the strainer in the lid- if you line it up w/ the spout, you’ll lose some noodles. I found spinning the lid to the side a little prevented this.

3. Primula Coffee Brew Buddy

It is easy to judge a book by its cover with this one, as it doesn’t look as impressive as brewers like the AeroPress. But do not doubt the impressive performance that the Brew Buddy can produce.

Thanks to the design of the Primula net, the water stays in contact with the hot water longer producing a more balanced flavor. Never sour like some drip coffee makers.

When something this small and compact is also extremely easy to use, the result is a very good product, and this is what we think about the Brew Buddy.

Sure, it takes some patience to execute the best cup of coffee as the basket can only hold a small amount of water. But you’re camping! Relax and look at the view, the time will go by faster. Still, Brew Buddy is easy to use, easy to clean, and won’t break the bank.

Specifications

  • Weight: 0.32 oz
  • Type: Drip
  • Capacity: 1 cup
  • Dimensions: 4.2 x 4.2 x 1.6 inches
Pros
  • Inexpensive
  • Simple to use
  • Lightweight and packable
  • No filter needed
  • Great taste
Cons
  • Requires patience when brewing a larger cup of coffee
  • Delicate
  • Potential for residue

Sample Customer Review…This could be one of my favorite purchases from Amazon. I bought it to use on camping trips and it is proving to be very easy to use, easy to clean, and has no additional taste. It appears to be well made and takes up little space when hiking/camping. I’ve even used it at home since it’s fast and simple for making coffee just for one person.

4. Wacaco Nanopresso Portable Espresso Maker

Throughout history, heading into the country has meant one big sacrifice for coffee lovers, no caramel crema for their perfect espresso. Thanks to the Wacaco Nanopresso, this is no longer the case. Through its spectacular design, it produces a fantastic espresso with crema. This product has exceptional taste, only rivaled by the AeroPress. Once you have figured out what role the different pieces have, it is very easy to produce the espresso.

With a few small drawbacks to do with its price and cleaning time. If you are an espresso and camping lover, then this is your best bet.

Specifications

  • Weight: Press alone: 11.02 oz. Press + cup + brush + scoop + bag: 12.35 oz
  • Dimensions: 2.36 x 2.76 x 6.14 inches
  • Material: BPA-free plastic
Pros
  • Super tasty espresso
  • Compact
  • Fairly straightforward to use
Cons
  • Steep price tag
  • Many small parts
  • Somewhat difficult to clean
  • Time-consuming to produce more than one shot of espresso

Sample Customer Review…I bought this because I travel a lot and I wanted to have espresso on the go. The machine is light and it can fit in a small space.

It’s very easy to use, and Very easy to clean. There are really no bad things I can say about this product. If you are considering purchasing an espresso machine and you travel this is the perfect purchase for you.

5. GSI Outdoors Ultralight Java Drip

The GSI Outdoors Ultralight Java Drip has a grand total weight of just 0.32 oz and produces a damn good coffee.

If that’s not enough for you, it doesn’t need any extra filters, collapses to literally nothing, and requires minimal water for its very easy clean.

The only thing we recommend is to be careful with it. As it is so lightweight, you could easily break it, and the last thing you want is to be stuck in the country with no coffee right? That is pretty manageable when you consider its low price.

Specifications

  • Material – nylon, clear polypropylene
  • Weight – 0.32 oz
  • Dimensions – 4.2 x 4.2 x .5 inches
  • Type- Drip
  • Capacity – 1-12 cups
Pros
  • No filter needed
  • Tiny and light
Cons
  • Must pour carefully for bold flavor
  • Delicate clips

Sample Customer Review…Great way to start the day! I love this thing. So light and easy to carry and the quality of coffee that you make with it tastes better than any instant packet. I went with the tips of other reviewers and used small cone filters inside of it. I used a circular motion while pouring the hot water to get the grounds that stuck on the top of the cone. It takes about 3 minutes for it to brew completely. It makes a nice strong cup of brew. Weight is so minimal that you can’t really notice it. I just store it folded up inside my GSI infinity mug, another great piece of kit.

6. Hario V60 Plastic Dripper

Generally speaking, the Hario V60 Plastic Dripper is our all-time favorite camping coffee maker. The V60 not only produces exceptionally tasting coffee, but it is also simple to use after you’ve perfected your pour-over technique. What makes it better? This little legend is unbelievably lightweight, weighing just 2.95 ounces, or 3.37 ounces when combined with the measuring scoop). Yes, the AeroPress is said to have a slightly better taste, but it is more than triple the price, double the weight, and much more complicated to use — especially when brewing for numerous people.

As far as we can see, the only large disadvantage of this little dude is to produce great coffee with the V60 requires more skill and competence than usual french presses, plus V60-specific filters are needed. After that, the negatives are few. A tip from us is if you are searching for the best-tasting coffee (who isn’t?), you should use very finely ground coffee. Combining this with measuring your coffee and water, will shoot your brewing skills into another universe.

Specifications

  • Weight – dripper alone: 2.95 oz
  • Dripper + scoop: 3.37 oz
  • Brew type- pour over
  • Main material – plastic
Pros
  • Gourmet flavor
  • Well-conceived design
  • Ceramic version available for home use
Cons
  • Filters are harder to find
  • Expensive for a plastic dripper
  • Heavier than other brands

Sample Customer Review…I Love this pour-over coffee maker. It was a super good value compared to others I’ve tried. The drip is very quick and makes a great-tasting cup of coffee if you’re just needing a single cup on the go. This also serves me very well when I go camping. Very durable and easily cleaned.

7. Brutrek French Press Coffee and Tea Maker

When looking for the right brewer for you, there’s a lot of factors to consider. Yes, lightweight and compact brewers are good for up to two campers, but it doesn’t quite cut it for large groups. You want something that speeds up the process through bigger capacity and storage ability. The Planetary Designs Table Top French Press executes this to perfection through its 48 ounces of coffee storage ability, allowing everyone in your group to enjoy their coffee promptly.

Using this brewer is actually easier than you have already thought. Just add the correct amount of coffee towards the bottom of the carafe, pour the hot water inside, and then seal the pitcher with the French press lid. Next, sit back, relax for three to four minutes before beginning to push the plunger down until the end.

Planetary Design’s core mechanics in the product allow for the correct amount of coffee to enter your beverage. The result is a maximum taste with a smooth texture, with no bitterness.

Created from double-walled, vacuum-insulated stainless steel, this press was born for the campsite. To add to its wonders, there is no need for extra filters or pieces, allowing you to save room for other essentials.

Specifications

  • Material-Stainless steel
  • Brand- Planetary Design
  • Item Weight- 2.38 pounds
  • Dimensions- 5.5 x 5.5 x 10.5 inches
  • Type: Press
  • Capacity: 6 cups
Pros
  • Big and durable
  • Brews coffee for larger groups
  • Stays warm for long periods of time
Cons
  • Heavy and bulky
  • Requires a lot of water to keep it clean
  • More pricey

Sample Customer Review…Can’t really add much to all the glowing reviews here except to say that they are entirely well deserved. This is a great product: well-made, durable, and exceptionally easy to clean. After a year of constant daily use, it looks and performs as good as new, and the interior and filter do not seem to pick up coffee sediment and residue as easily as the Bodum presses I have used in the past. And the thermal qualities keep coffee warm for a good amount of time – even longer if you wrap a kitchen towel around the pot on chilly mornings.

8. MSR MugMat

I know what you are looking for, you want something that’s lightweight, easy to clean, and consistently produces tasty coffee? Look no further than the MSR MugMate. All they ask of you is to add the coffee grounds and the hot water, wait a few minutes, and enjoy. It cleans easily by either tapping the remains into the trash or the old fashioned quick rinse in a nearby stream, providing there is one. If you wake up and are feeling a tea, no problem, this brewer doubles up as a loose-leaf tea brewer.

Something we like about this brewer is how easy it is to constantly produce good quality coffee. Without considering providing for a bigger group, this product has minimal drawbacks, making this guy one of the best for backpacking.

Specification

  • Package length: 20.574 cm
  • Package width: 11.684 cm
  • Package height: 5.334 cm
  • Weight: 0.7 oz
  • Brew Type: Espresso / Pour Over
Pros
  • Lightweight
  • Great taste
  • Good design
Cons
  • Small quantity

Sample Customer Review…This is the easiest, fastest, and very best way to make a single cup of excellent coffee. I grind my own coffee to achieve the strength I want. In addition, the filter can be left in a cup for as brief or long as desired to achieve the desired taste. I am giving it as a gift to someone else who custom grinds his coffee.

9. Farberware Yosemite Stainless Steel Coffee Percolator

There usually is a difficult tradeoff when providing coffee for big groups, a good coffee maker, or an affordable one. However, the Farberware Classic Stainless Steel Yosemite 8-Cup Percolator has found the in-between.

The design of this dude can make things real nostalgic on your retreat, with its classic design. An issue with its cool style, is its not so cool wait time for your brew, taking 21 minutes to make all 8 cups of tea. At least you could pitch your tent in the meantime. This positive about the long wait time, because of the French press lid, it stays hot for a long time and won’t turn bitter.

Specifications

  • Weight: 1 lb 11.5 oz
  • Type: Percolator
  • Capacity: 8 cups
Pros
  • Great style
  • Affordable
  • Keeps coffee hot
Cons
  • Glass lid could break
  • Long time to brew
  • Not very portable

Sample Customer Review…This percolator is perfect for a good personalized cup of coffee. You determine how much and what kind of coffee to put in the basket. It takes only ten minutes on my stove for the water to boil and percolate. You can let percolate as long as you like to suit your taste. For me, two to three minutes makes for the best flavor. It cleans easily. I would recommend this to anyone. I bought a second one when my wife took our first one with her on a two-month deployment.

10. ESPRO P1

The ESPRO Travel Coffee Press P1 is a real front runner for lovers of the classic French press. If you want something to really get you going, this has a double filter that is 9-12 times finer compared to a standard French press filter, and believe us it’s good. As if you needed anything else, the ESPRO offers paper filters in between the two microfilters for the smoothest, cleanest final product. The only downside to this (believe us, the only downside) is that it takes up more space, with it previously holding 16 ounces, it now would only hold 10 ounces. Yes, the thing is kind of heavy, but if this is an issue they also offer a lightweight model, your choice.

Specifications

  • Weight – 12.3 oz
  • Type – French Press
  • Stainless Steel
Pros
  • Clean flavor
  • Double-filtered
  • Can be used as a leakproof travel mug
Cons
  • Many pieces to keep track of
  • Heavy
  • More expensive

Sample Customer Review…I don’t know why I hadn’t heard of a travel mug-press before but now I am in love! Not only is this extremely practical, it actually tastes great too. There’s a regular french press in my office that serves about 2.5 cups of coffee and a water heater to use in conjunction with it. I just heat the water and pour it into my travel mug. 3-5 scoops of grounds usually do the job depending on how fine they are. You can either drink straight from the thermos (which keeps the coffee steaming hot for 3-4 hours with the top off) or pour it smoothly into a coffee cup. Clean-up is really simple. I add a few steps to make it easier. I pour water on the top once the coffee is emptied. Move the plunger up and down once to push that water through the filters. Unscrew, dump out the used grounds, rinse with water and scrub clean gently.

I plan on taking this with me for all of my travels. Hope you get one!

11. Snow Peak’s Collapsible Coffee Drip

Now, this guy is coffee in its simplest form, and it produces a really nice brew. The base is wide enough to fit the majority of vessels, whatever the shape, and you can use any filter you have. This is very transportable due to its lightweight design, and the fact it can fold up, making it one of the best non-plastic options available. Be careful though, as the legs don’t lock into place, so ensure you are mindful when it’s filled with hot water.

Specifications

  • Weight – 4.8 oz
  • Type – Pour Over
  • Stainless Steel
Pros
  • Packs down flat
  • Great taste
  • Lightweight
  • Works on top of many types and sizes
Cons
  • Can collapse while brewing as the legs don’t lock
  • Certain filters can hang low

Sample Customer Review…Snowpeak engineering, so fabulous design, brand name folds more flat, less-bendy, worth the money! Take any cheap round paper filter, fold in half (half-moon) then fold over about a third, now you have a cone that fits perfectly, throw out, or compost when done. No need to even rinse in between uses although it’s stainless steel so dishwasher safe too. Also works with stainless screen, laser drilled, or fabric reusable filters. Fits even larger mugs or former French Press containers whose fiddly bits have gone wonky. Everywhere I take this, people end up loving it. Make coffee as mild, strong, fast, or slow as you want. Ideal for tiny, sustainable living.

12. ROMAUNT All In One Portable Coffee Maker

The compact design of this 4-in-one coffee maker makes it the ideal product for camping as it is easily packable and lightweight. Containing a grinder, filter, a brewer, and two coffee mugs, the only external action required is heating water. This coffee maker serves enough coffee for one or two people and can also be utilized to make tea.

Adding to its convenient design for packing, the brewer is also time efficient as it only takes 2 minutes to grind up to 24g of coffee beans. Additionally, the coffee is easily personalizable because the user can control the size of the coffee ground when grinding. Lastly, its stainless steel inner container provides excellent heat insulation to maintain the what of the coffee while protecting the user’s hands

Specifications

  • Stainless Steel
  • Weight – 2.2 Pounds
  • Dimensions – 10.1 x 4.1 x 3.9 inches
  • Capacity – 1 cup
Pros
  • No beans in coffee due to mesh lining
  • Rich coffee taste
  • Reusable filter and grinder
  • Easy to transport
Cons
  • Expensive
  • No water heating component

Sample customer review…I really bought this for the manual bean grinder, if it makes coffee too then so much the better. I use it on my sailing yacht and camping. I had already bought one of the pump-style espresso makers and I needed something to grind the beans. What I found was that the larger basket on this one allows you to add more grounds and really fix yourself some jet fuel! It actually holds enough for two cups. I have to say it beats my espresso maker! I think both coffee makers are fun and I like to switch around. Grinding the beans by hand takes 3 or 4 minutes, which is not that long but seems like an eternity. I like that though, you put a part of yourself into it. It’s a handmade cup of coffee! It’s easier if you hold it at the base while you grind. You get a little better leverage that way. The handle folds up and everything tucks away nicely when you’re done. I think it’s really well thought out. I’m thrilled with mine!

Buying Guide: Things to Consider When Purchasing the Best Camping Coffee Makers

For us coffee lovers, we don’t want to be out in the wilderness and then find out we can’t have our lifeblood- our coffee. There are several factors that you need to check before making that all-important choice.

Portability

We all know that when camping you have a ton of kit to take with you, and you don’t want the burden of more weight due to your coffee.

Value

This isn’t just about the bang for your buck, but also its longevity and versatility. This means that on your fourth day of camping, will the coffee still have that amazing taste that it did on the first day.

Durability

Similar to your gear, you don’t want it breaking within the first trip. You want one that can not only survive knocks against rocks but also changes in weather.

Coffee Quality

For some (us) this is the biggest factor, as even if your coffee maker has survived a fall off a cliff if it tastes awful at the end of it then was there any point.

Conclusion

Don’t worry, we’re on the same page. It’s a big commitment selecting a coffee maker for when you’re camping as there’s no going back, and if you’re like us, it can nearly make or break a trip. This is why we have used our personal knowledge and recommendations of trusted others to compile this list of the best camping coffee makers. FAQ

What temperature do coffee makers brew at?

Coffee makers brew at 195°F to 205°F

Why is my coffee maker making weak coffee?

Weak coffee is typically due to the water not being hot enough, the coffee isn’t ground properly, or the coffee-to-water ratio is unbalanced. Some fixes can be to increase the heat, add a small amount of instant coffee, and brewing the ground again with the weak coffee.
