1. Estwing Sportsman’s Axe

Estwing Sportsman’s Axe is a great tool for numerous circumstances. It can be used for chopping large logs or branches on smaller trees. It is also a great tool to prepare your fire at night to roast some marshmallows after a long day of camping. It is very practical for all of your camping needs.

The Estwing Sportsman’s Axe comes in two colors. It has a genuine leather grip for your protection. It is comfortable but ensures you will not lose your hatchet. The grip is very fashionable but made with quality material to make sure you are being safe. Its clean design is one of the ways this hatchest stands out amongst others. The shorter handle makes this hatchet easier for cutting and splitting wood. The blade is also extremely sharp and this tool comes with a nylon cloth to keep the blade nice and clean.

With all of these great features, the hatchet only weighs 3.8 pounds which is on the heavier side compared to other hatches on the market. It is also reasonably priced compared to other hatches on the market as well.

Specifications

  • Durable
  • Outdoor versatility
  • Heavy-duty sheath
  • Genuine leather grip
  • Made in the USA
  • 2.75 or 3.25-inch edge
Pros
  • Good size
  • Good design
  • Sharp
Cons
  • Poor quality
  • Chips in design on the handle
  • Chips on blade

Sample Customer Review… I loved the fact the head and handle were one piece. There is no way for the head to become loose and eventually come off. The overall feel of this hatchet is strong and sturdy. The handle is the perfect size for my hands and feels comfortable to grip. I treated the leather-wrapped handle to make it last longer rather than look shiny. The back of the head is flat which is perfect for hammering tent stakes into the ground. My previous hatchet had a small, round hammer-style butt end. This one is flat for the length of the butt. This will give me a larger surface with which to hammer in those stakes. It came much sharper than I expected it to be. I am not going to sharpen it before it gets used the first time. I also like the leather cover that it comes with. It has a bit of personality whereas most other hatchets come with a plain wrap black sheath or plastic piece to cover the sharpened end.

2. Fiskars X11 Splitting Axe

The Fiskars X11 Splitting Axe17 Inch is a great lightweight hatchet. Its weight is what attracts customers to this product. It only weighs 2.18 pounds which is much lighter than the other hatchets on the market.

The Fiskars X11 Splitting Axe has many uses. It can be used for splitting and cutting wood. On the other hand, it can be used for more detailed woodland projects. Therefore, you can cut down trees or get kindling for an evening fire very efficiently with this hatchet. It is used by many females or people who are shorter in height because it is smaller and easier to use. The size or the weight doesn’t overpower the users of this tool.

The balance between weight and size makes it very easy to swing that anybody could use this effectively. However, it is going to be more challenging to cut larger pieces of wood or larger trees because it is smaller in size. However, it can also make this hatchet more practical if you are hiking or want to travel light.

It is reasonably priced for the quality of this hatchet. This product also comes with a plastic coating to ensure that the handle will not damage. The handle material also ensures that you have a strong grip when using this hatchet.

Specifications

  • Easy one-handed use
  • More one-strike splits
  • Good power-to-weight ratio
  • The sheath helps protect the blade
  • Lifetime warranty
Pros
  • Good balance
  • Lightweight
  • Sharp
Cons
  • Rusts
  • Overpriced

Sample Customer Review… Every now and then you get a product that excels at doing what it is designed for and really stands out. This little hatchet is one of those items. I bought it to take camping as I have a larger splitting ax for home duty, but it splits wood so easily and is so nice to use that for backyard fires I tend to grab this in lieu of the heavier ax. The weight and ergonomics are terrific with the lightweight grippy handle. The resin handle looks like a weak point where it attaches but the head is nicely designed to push the wood away from this point, avoiding damage. The nonstick coating works well and keeps the hatchet from getting stuck. The hatchet is still extremely sharp after a summer of use. Just a great product.

3. Morakniv Boron Steel

This hatchet is light and easy to pack for car or backpacking camping. Its weight and size do not compromise its utility in splitting pieces of wood for the fire. The blade is sharp and strong. The reinforced plastic handle is durable enough to last through most projects. It comes with a leather sheath and a limited lifetime warranty from the manufacturers.

Specifications

  • Axe head made of black epoxy coated in boron steel
  • Blade thickness: 6 mm
  • Blade length: 115 mm
  • Total length: 320 mm
  • Reinforced plastic handle
  • Comes with a leather sheath
  • Limited lifetime manufacturer’s warranty
Pros
  • Light
  • Sharp blade
  • Affordable
  • Limited lifetime warranty included
Cons
  • Sheath is low-quality
  • Not usefully in chopping large logs

Sample Customer Review… There’s obviously a trade-off with weight when it comes to hatchet usability, but we found this to work really well. We split wood and kindling for several hours’ worth of campfire and had no issues. My concern was with the design of the blade inside the handle. Splitting wood puts the handle in the impact area, but we had no problem. It’s not the best hatchet I own, but it’s a pound lighter than my next one, and for backpacking, that’s worth it. Because of its lightweight, chopping is less effective, but batoning (embedding the hatchet and then driving it the rest of the way through with a heavier section of wood) worked very well. This will go on most of my trips from now on.

4. M48 Tactical Tomahawk Axe

This ax is light for its size and can handle light to medium tasks. The ax head is designed to reduce and redistribute the weight for a more balanced hatchet. The spike on the back of the ax can help pierce and split wood. The handle is made of glass fiber nylon. This ax has an ergonomic handle which makes it easier to use. A budget-friendly ax that can work well for splitting wood.

Specifications

  • Total length: 11.8 inches
  • Total weight: 1.4 lbs
  • Blade length: 3.8 inches
  • Blade is made up of 3Cr13 Titanium
  • Handle is made up of glass fiber nylon
Pros
  • Ergonomic handle
  • Very light and easy to carry
  • Affordable
Cons
  • Edge can get dull quickly
  • Low-quality sheath

Sample Customer Review… The handle is a very strong type of plastic material, and it looks great. The rubber grip gives excellent grip and it very comfortable to hold at the same time. The head is thick, but not too thick and has a nice flat grind on the edge. It comes slightly sharpened, but can be made to have an absolute razor edge, which holds excellently. Even though the blade is stainless steel, it is very strong, and it also has a cool dark grey coating, which stays on well. It is rather light compared to most hatchets but still packs an incredible hit.

5. Husqvarna Wooden Hatchet

The Husqvarna Wooden Hatchet is a very traditional hatchet. The wooden handle is curved to provide comfort when using. However, it does not include any non-slip material to provide safety during wet conditions. This can also be a safety concern during dry conditions.

The Husqvarna Wooden Hatchet does weigh more than other hatchets on the market. Which does not make it a good tool to bring when hiking. The increase in weight makes it a great product for cutting or splitting large logs or trees. Also, it can be used for smaller pieces of wood. Swedish steel also contributes to the weight of this product.

However, it ensures that the blade is more durable. It is also lower priced compared to others. It is a cheaper alternative hatchet. It does have a traditional feel to the design and style of the product but still gets the job done. Whether big or small wood, cutting trees or preparing fire kindling, the Husqvarna Wooden Hatchet can tackle any project you have to complete.

Specifications

  • Leather edge cover
  • Small
  • Weighs 2.4 pounds
  • Lower priced
  • No non-slip grip
Pros
  • Affordable
  • Time-saving
  • Quality steel
Cons
  • Poor quality
  • Breaks in half
  • Slippery handle

Sample Customer Review… I was impressed with the fit of the ax head to the hickory very solid and very little space between the head and handle. Next, the grain alignment is very solid and lines up very well with the cutting edge. Another great aspect about this hatchet is the way the cutting edge is aligned perfectly with the handle and does not taper to one side. Now there seems to controversy over the ergonomics of the handle because this shape seems to be a little unconventional. But as soon I spent an hour or so testing on a few fallen trees in the middle of the road. I found that the handle fits very nicely in the hand. Let’s move on to the ax head. This hatchet is unique because the head is on the heavier side of hatchets. I felt that this actually did justice. This weight really puts a punch behind every swing and makes me rethink the jobs that I can do with a hatchet. If there was such thing as a felling hatchet I think this tool would fall into the category. The metal itself is durable and the edge came very sharp. I’ve purchased a few knives that actually came just as sharp. I honed the blade after my first use for no more than 5 minutes because it only took a few strokes on the stone to create another beautiful edge.

6. Gransfors Bruks

The Gransfors Bruks hatchet closely resembles a traditional hatchet. It is a great first hatchet if you are using it for the first time. For example, this would be a good tool to introduce to a group of boy scouts for the first time.

The handmade features of this tool are very rare compared to other hatchets on the market. This may be the main reason for it to drive up the price. It is more expensive than other hatchets on the market as well. It is very easy to carve or cut anything of your desire. The steel that it is made of increases the durability of this hatchet. It should be able to last decades before there is any chipping or wear-and-tear shown on the blade. The handle fits comfortably on your hand to be easy to chop and carve. The style and design of the handle also allow the hatchet to be more controllable when using.

The Gransfors Bruks hatchet also comes with a fitted leather sheath to protect the blade. This also ensures safety when the tool is not in use. This traditional hatchet can get the job done.

Specifications

  • Weighs 1.3 pounds
  • Traditional hatchet
  • Handmade
  • Good handle
Pros
  • Comfortable
  • Durable steel
  • Reasonably lightweight
Cons
  • Cheap quality sheath
  • Small
  • Pricey

Sample Customer Review… Best backpacking hatchet I have ever owned. Hands down the best-made, best thought-out design, practical, ergonomic hatchet I used so far. Razor-sharp. Awesome leather sheath. I have actually started carrying this in place of a knife, with a lightweight Mora as a backup. Seems expensive, but compared to what I have paid for other hatchets, this one makes the others seem like failed experiments that I wasted my money on. I am the happiest I have ever been with any hatchet, ever. Will never go back to anything other. I have used it for chopping, cutting, skinning, and carving. I like it more than a knife now.

7. Schrade SCAXE2

The Schrade SCAXE2 is another great hatchet on the market. Many enjoy the large blade that is made of a titanium coating along with glass fiber. These quality materials that are on the blade make it extremely durable. It is also very dependable and easy to use with its thermoplastic belt sheath. The blade is on the smaller side of the market which makes it more useful for smaller pieces of wood. It will not be as effective in splitting or cutting larger logs or trees.

These qualities make the Schrade SCAXE2 a great tool no matter what the weather situation might be. Also, if it is raining, the special rubber grip ensures that you will not lose control of your hatchet.

The head of the hatchet also acts as a hammer. It is a perfect tool for hammering in the stakes of your tent. The versatility of this product is what attracts many customers. It is extremely practical for many different situations.

It is also a lightweight hatchet that is very beneficial for hiking or backpacking. This feature also makes it extremely easy to store and move around.

Specifications

  • Weighs 1 pound, 6.4 ounces
  • Blade is durable
  • Dependable
  • Secure
  • Rubber grip on the handle
Pros
  • The handle is a strong plastic material
  • Strong blade
  • Easy to store
Cons
  • Breaks into pieces
  • Low quality
  • Doesn’t arrive sharp

Sample Customer Review… The picture makes it look much bigger than it actually is. It’s just about exactly 1 foot long, with a 5 1/2 inch long head. The handle is a very strong type of plastic material, and it looks great. Due to its decreased size, it does not get in the way anywhere you have it stored. It is rather light compared to most hatchets but still packs an incredible hit. The Kydex sheathe is very durable, and will not rot like leather. It fits the head perfectly and snaps on and off. The snap is a bit hard to open and close at first, but with time gets easier. Lastly, the fire steel. The Ferro rod is hidden in the base of the handle, completely out of the way. The rod on its own is worth at least $20. This thing is enormous. It is 2 3/4 inches long, and 3/8 inches thick. It is much larger than a usual firestarter rod. The top of the head (NOT THE EDGE) works great to spark it, and it sends off a LOT of sparks.

8. Off Grid Tools Survival Axe

The Off Grid Tool Survival Axe has a very unique design. Most of the other hatchets we have seen do not include a claw. This feature is a competitive advantage for this product. Additionally, it has a hammer that is an extra useful feature. It also has replaceable saw blades. Overall this hatchet has many unique features that we have not seen in other hatchets.

Specifications

  • Re-sharpened blade
  • Hammer and claw
  • Replaceable saw blade
  • Steel glass breaker
  • Weighs 1.6 pounds
Pros
  • Multifunctional
  • Small to save space
Cons
  • Cannot cut anything large
  • The blade is not very sharp
  • Thin claw
  • Higher priced

Sample Customer Review… The Lil Trucker tool is awesome! It clearly was made of high-quality materials and has proven to be very durable. I love the fact that I can bring it on a backpacking trip or day hike and know that I have enough capability to solve any problem that comes my way. The less you need to keep track of when outdoors the better. I also keep the Lil trucker in my car at all times. Again, having such a versatile tool provides a lot of confidence in situations that are hard to prepare for.

9. CRKT Ruger Hatchet

The CRKT Ruger Hatchet is reasonably priced compared to others on the market. The head of the hatchet is made out of carbon steel material to ensure the hatchet is durable. The polypropylene handle is strong and durable to handle any hatchet needs. This hatchet also includes a hammer. This feature is very useful when camping to hammer down stakes and poles.

Specifications

  • Carbon steel
  • Magnesium phosphate black coating
  • Hammer
  • Tough polypropylene
  • Strong
  • Durable
Pros
  • Reasonably priced
  • Good head design
Cons
  • Doesn’t include a sheath
  • Dull

Sample Customer Review… The hammer on the back functions great. I tried it out by pounding a 16 penny nail (big framing nail) into hardwood. Albeit more awkward because of the blade on the other side but pounded about as effectively as a 15 oz. swing hammer. Effective for pounding tent stakes. The ax on the front will have to sharpen before use. If sharpened well, it meets all, exceeds most, other hatchets in this price range I have used. Better bevel from tip to handle than any others I’ve yet seen. The handle is very light and makes it a great emergency pack/backpacking hatchet.

10. CRKT Kangee Tomahawk

The Kangee Tomahawk provides the perfect mix of performance and value. The long handle of this tomahawk provides great control and reach with each strike. Its tapered edge allows for a sharper cut. It is very practical and useful for camping and outdoor usage. The handle can be removed for maintenance and cleaning. The ax head is easy to sharpen too. This ax is best used for survival needs and camping.

Specifications

  • Blade thickness: 5.84 mm
  • Weight: 1.53 lb
  • Made of carbon steel and glass-reinforced nylon handle
  • Limited lifetime warranty
  • Removable handle
  • Comes with a sheath
Pros
  • Handle is a non-slip grip
  • Great cutting power with large logs
  • Lockable plastic cover
  • Durable
Cons
  • Larger than most camping axes
  • Grip ineffective when wet
  • Non-stick coating wears off over time

Sample Customer Review… It is comfortable, very well made has more cutting edges than a bucket of glass. It feels great in the hand, the weight feels perfect for the size, at or just over a foot long. The grips have a great feel to the hand with an almost ergonomic feel. The sheath is a great idea and gives you lots of carrying options which I love and was probably one of the other big selling points. It is a beast at chopping wood, I’d put this up against any knife or similar sized ax, yet it’s light and handy enough to do small tasks.

Buying Guide: Things to Consider When Purchasing a Camping Hatchet

After reviewing many different hatchets that are on the market, it would be helpful for you to take into consideration a few important characteristics before purchasing.

Use

It is important to consider your reasoning behind needing a hatchet. Different people enjoy different products because of their intended use. If you are planning on using it to be convenient when hiking, a lightweight hatchet would be better than a heavier hatchet.

If you are interested in using it as a hammer as well, choose a hatch that provides this function. If you are planning on using it to split small logs or prepare to kindle, you do not need a large or heavy-duty hatchet that weighs more. Taking into consideration what you use for a hatchet will help you narrow down your options to what fits your needs.

Material

Many of the blades we have seen are stainless steel. However, the brands come with different warranty features. If you are planning on using this item for many years, it would be better to invest in a hatchet that is built with higher quality materials. Yes, it is important to consider the blade and the sharpness of the blade, but it is also important to consider the material that the handle is made out of.

If you live in a climate where rain is common, you would want to purchase a hatchet that is made with a non-slip rubber material. You also want to purchase the material that is most comfortable for you. It is important that the material increases the safety of this product but that it also ensures you can chop and split away for hours.

Size

The size of the blade determines the size of the wood it is most suitable for. If you have a larger blade, you will be able to cut through larger pieces of wood. Therefore, if you have a smaller blade, you will be restricted to smaller and thinner wood.

Shape

The design of the handle is what determines your comfort level when using the hatchet. You want to make sure you can firmly grip this product for many hours. Your hand mustn’t cramp when in use.

Conclusion

Finding the best camping hatchet is easy with the right information. The same hatches are useful for all kinds of outdoor activities, including hiking and fishing as well. The information above should be able to guide you in your purchasing decisions. Always remember that safety comes first when using and storing your hatchet. Chop and split safely.
