1. Sony WH-1000XM4

Let’s start strong with one of the best all-around over-ear headphones. These have excellent noise cancellation and DSEE Extreme audio upscaling. The Sony WH-100XM4 has up to 30 hours of battery life with its new multipoint pairing.

In addition to this, if at any time you are listening to audio and take off your headphones, your audio is automatically paused.

Specifications

  • Dual Noise Sensor noise-cancellation
  • 30-hour battery life
  • Touch-sensor controls
  • Voice microphone
Pros
  • Excellent noise canceling
  • DSEE Extreme audio upscaling
  • Long battery life
Cons
  • Pricey
  • Not water resistant

Sample Customer Review…It’s genuinely hard to find a fault with these. I own dozens of high-end headphones, some of which offer superior audio quality but none offer this degree of functionality. These are my new go-to’s. Noise-canceling is phenomenal; if you can hear stuff while wearing them then you can definitely say someone’s being too loud.

Dual pairing, functional touch controls, an assignable custom button, Alexa compatibility, insane battery life, sleek and simple design that definitely understates what’s underneath the hood.

2. Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700

Bose is one of the top producers of noise-canceling headphones. These over-ear headphones offer 20 hours of battery life and are one of the best products for phone calls. The microphone uses technology that picks up only your voice so you can have clear communication.

This product offers independent volume control and different levels of noise cancellation, allowing you to customize your listening experience. All around, this product is a strong audio performer and from a reputable brand.

Specifications

  • 11 levels of active noise cancellation
  • Wireless
  • Voice microphone
  • Alexa and Google voice assistants
  • 20-hour battery life
Pros
  • Excellent for calls
  • Customized controls
  • Great noise cancellation
Cons
  • Bose Music App is a hassle
  • Connection issues

Sample Customer Review…They connected to my Galaxy Note 8 with android 9.0 instantly. From there I paired them with my Surface Pro and desktop PC both with Windows 10 and they work great with both. I had no problems switching between either PC and the phone, just had to pause playback on one and start it on another.

The sound from these surprised me a lot. They sound great. They have plenty of bass and are very clear with all the music I’ve played. The ANC works very well; I’m able to still hear voices a little with it on 10. It works best with things like motor and AC noise. They are very comfortable to me. I haven’t had any discomfort at all with these even using them with a hat on.

3. Bowers & Wilkins PX7 Wireless Headphones

This product has made its way to the top with its sound quality and sophisticated noise canceling. Their sound quality is run by 43.6mm drivers for studio-quality performances. Their adaptive noise cancellation automatically adjusts when it needs to so that you are receiving optimal sound quality. They offer a more comfortable design with their ear cradling option to ensure you don’t feel achy after long usage.

The Bowers & Wilkins product offers 30 hours of battery life and a quick charge of 15 minutes with 6 hours of listening. All these features make an excellent set of headphones to have especially the amount of effort that goes into the comfortability of these headphones.

Specifications

  • Wireless
  • 43mm drivers
  • Adaptive noise cancelling
  • 30-hour battery life
Pros
  • Excellent battery life
  • Comfortable
  • Easy Bluetooth pairing
Cons
  • Earcups don’t collapse
  • Not Durable

Sample Customer Review…They sound great, very balanced sound and the soundstage is the widest of all I’ve tried. You can hear everything distinctly in different places, and it’s really amazing. I do hear things with these that I don’t with other headphones. The noise-canceling is very strong, possibly because the noise isolation is so good with the way the ear cups are designed.

They are lightweight but have a very solid build quality that feels premium. They are very comfortable as the ear cups sit completely around my ears. Also, the battery life is spectacular and exactly as advertised at 30 hours. The carrying case is as solid as the headphones: well designed and fits in my bag with no issues.

They connect to two devices at once and you set in the app whether they should connect to the same device first or the last one connected to. Overall I love these and also think they look cool, and I highly recommend them.

 4. Cowin E7 Pro

No products found.

These over-ear headphones are some of the most budget-friendly products out there. Even at this price, Cowin still provides some of the crispest details and boasts 45mm aperture drivers for powerful bass. They offer active noise canceling so you can focus only on your sound and get the most out of your listening experience with 30 hours of battery life.

It’s amazing how well this product performs for its price. The sound quality is even better than most high-end noise-canceling-focused products.

Specifications

  • Soft ear cushions
  • Noise cancelling
  • 45mm large-aperture drivers
  • Voice microphone
Pros
  • Extremely budget-friendly
  • Great bass
  • Great battery life
Cons
  • Not durable
  • Less noise cancellation

Sample Customer Review…I love these so much! The sound is great, the interface is awesome and it keeps a charge forever! You can wear them all day without it hurting, and it talks to you and tells you what setting it is on and if the battery power is high or low (I’m guessing it says low eventually, the battery lasts so long I’ve never gotten past “battery high”).

The noise-canceling works well enough for me, and it makes focusing on work so much easier. I can focus and it doesn’t take me a million years to complete a task. They even come with a hard-ish, zippered carrying case with an inside pocket for charger and wire storage. It hooks up to my phone, computer, tv, tablet, and everything else super easy, and they look stylish.

5. Jabra Elite 45h

This is another product under $100 but Jabra Elite does not have any added features. This is a good product for those who are looking for something more simple and just want to listen and not keep up with anything extra because I understand that a lot of features can feel like a lot to keep up with and there’s a higher chance of them not working.

This company focuses its attention on the audio with their app so you can focus on the sound as well to adjust to your liking. This product has plush memory foam with earpads lined in leatherette covering. The underside of the headband is also cushioned for a secure and lightweight fit for long listening sessions.

Specifications

  • 50-hour battery life
  • Voice microphone
  • Alexa and Google voice assistants
  • Wireless
Pros
  • Extremely budget-friendly
  • Comfortable fit
  • Customize audio levels with an app
Cons
  • Not the best for calls

Sample Customer Review…Very comfortable. I’ve worn them for hours with no ear pressure discomfort at all. They weigh less than 6 oz and have a padded headrest. Longest battery life. After two days of use, I’m down to 88% power. Allows connection to two devices. Bluetooth 5.0 allows them to function all over my house.

Great sound, made even better by a really cool feature unique among the tested units: there’s a phone app that allows you to tweak the sound and features. It even has a hearing test that independently tests each of your ears and tailors the headphones to your hearing profile. On top of this, there is a five-band equalizer, the ability to adjust how long they stay on (including indefinitely), and other features.

While these features are only available via smartphone, your settings remain in the headphones while using them with a computer.

 6. Beyerdynamic Amiron Wireless

The Beyerdynamic wireless headphone offers some of the best sound quality. With its detailed mids and highs, it’s still able to deliver an overall neutral sound. Incredibly, it’s still in the average price range.

These over ear headphones are built to last. Their bulky design can make it difficult to travel, but they still offer optimal noise cancellation and great sound.

Specifications

  • Voice microphone
  • Wireless
  • Mobile app for audio mixing
  • Touchpad controls
Pros
  • Great price
  • Incredible sound quality
  • Durable
Cons
  • Not suitable for travel
  • Lacks deep bass

Sample Customer Review…Overall, the whole tuning of Amiron creates a sense of an expansive soundstage (quite impressive for a closed-back design!) with the sound surrounding you. You are in the center of the stage, and there is plenty of air and separation of instruments. Never a sense of congestion. Beyerdynamic has really achieved something special here and these may well be the most musical and “best” wireless headphones available.

Of course, they are on the neutral-natural spectrum of tuning, as all HiFi grade ‘phones should be. There are other headphones with many different tunings, that may appeal to different personal tastes. However, I can say the Amirons are absolutely Hi-Fi “audiophile-grade” cans in a wireless package. There is liquid musical magic oozing out them with virtually any genre of music that I threw at them.

Comfort is great, even with the increased clamping adjustment which was critical for hearing all the bass, and they remain extremely comfortable on my head after 2-3 hours of listening.

7. Sennheiser Momentum Wireless

This product puts Sennheiser in competition with other brands known for noise cancellation. The Momentum gives you high-detailed sound quality and balanced levels. This product offers 17 hours of battery life and is built with comfort for those long listening sessions.

Specifications

  • Wireless
  • Play controls
  • Leather headband
  • Active noise cancellation
Pros
  • Great noise cancellation
  • Good sound quality
  • Comfortable
Cons
  • More expensive than competitors
  • Shorter battery life

Sample Customer Review…They sound great, as expected in this category. The noise cancellation is acceptable, it’s going to be a preference thing. There are three levels plus off. I use them on the lowest level mostly, and that helps block clarinet practice upstairs. I wish there was a setting that actually could make my children quiet for a time…

The battery lasts longer than I can stand to wear them comfortably which is 4-5 hours. I haven’t had them go below 60%. The main reason I got them is that I have huge ears. The soft, real leather, ear pads are big enough for my freakishly large ears to fit in if I’m really careful. Another plus over the others are physical buttons and a switch. I just have to feel for the bum on the button to pause music or answer a call.

8. AKG N700NC M2

These headphones have a good durable build and still maintain great sound quality and noise cancellation. With this product, you receive double earcups and replaceable ear pads. This offers a more comfortable build for on-the-go listening and still includes noise cancellation and surround sound. If you do want to take this product on the go, these over-ear headphones are foldable and have an ambient sound mode to listen to your surroundings when you need to.

There are a lot of other features, such as the adjustability to the headband which a lot of high-end products don’t offer. Even with all these features added to ensure you have the best listening experience, it comes at a more budget-friendly price. I would highly recommend this product for those who are looking for headphones to travel with or just to take them anywhere.

Specifications

  • Adaptive noice cancellation
  • Ambient mode
  • Wireless
  • Includes 5mm audio cable
  • Includes carrying case
  • Foldable
Pros
  • Budget-friendly
  • Durable
  • Adjustable
  • Great for travel
Cons
  • Less sound quality
  • Shorter battery life

Sample Customer Review…The functioning of these headphones greatly surpassed my expectations. They readily paired and connected with my soundbar and also with my mobiles. The sound quality over each connection is clear and rich. I was particularly impressed with how useful they are when connected with my mobile phone; I can walk around my apartment speaking in a normal tone of voice and, I’m told, my voice can be heard absolutely clearly with the phone parked on the kitchen counter. Well done, AKG and Samsung Electronics.

9. Sennheiser HD 450BT

This is another product that is less expensive than the well-known product and it still has a lot to offer. The right earcup houses all the controls such as power/pairing, playback, track navigation, a volume rocker, and a dedicated voice assistant button. The Sennheiser compacts pretty flat when not in use so yet another good travel product. You get roughly about 30 hours of battery life depending on your volume levels which are perfect on road trips or traveling by plane.

For the price, the Sennheiser offers pretty decent noise cancellation. They eliminate low-frequency rumbles and noises but high frequencies are a bit less controlled. The earpads give a pretty good noise cancellation but if there is some loud chattering nearby or someone is blasting loud music it is most likely to leak through. This product is easy to operate with nothing else added; it is user-friendly and overall offers great sound.

Specifications

  • Wireless
  • Bluetooth 5.0
  • Voice microphone
  • Siri and Google voice assistants
  • Mobile app for mixing audio
  • Play controls
  • Includes carrying case
Pros
  • Budget-friendly
  • User-friendly
  • Lightweight
Cons
  • Less noise cancellation
  • Connection issues

Sample Customer Review…They sound so much better than the cheap wired ones I usually get, and I used to think they were pretty good! I can see why some people will find the ear cup padding uncomfortable. I may end up replacing them, but if I adjust them over my ears right then I really don’t have any problems. The sound is very clear and they do a good job covering the entire frequency range.

The battery life kicks butt! They last so long I forget to recharge them. It’s just not something I have to do very often. The noise cancellation works well. But really the full cup nature of these headphones deal with most noise without the need for electronics. If I wear these with no sound playing I can’t hear much in the way of noise. I love not tripping over the wire of my old headphones anymore, or rolling over the wire with my chair. I highly recommend them, they are awesome!

10. Audeze LCD-1

These Audeze over-ear headphones offer highly detailed sound for a more immersive experience. Anything you’re listening to takes you into a full experience with crisp sound quality. This product has good sound isolation, but there is some sound leakage due to the open-back design. But don’t let that hold you back from these headphones because they offer some of the best sound quality on the market.

These over ear headphones have a great build and offer maximum comfort. I would highly recommend this product to those who pay very close attention to the sound levels and everything within them. The sound is direct, detailed, and will not disappoint you.

Specifications

  • Open-back design
  • Wired (3.5mm)
  • 90mm Plantar drivers
  • Includes carrying case
  • Foldable
Pros
  • Detailed sound quality
  • Sturdy build
  • Comfortable
Cons
  • Sound leakage
  • No noise cancellation

Sample Customer Review…I can’t say enough about the headphones. Within a few minutes of listening, I realized I’ve been listening to music the wrong way for years. With these headphones, you will hear things in songs that you’ve been missing this whole time.

Besides the incredible, accurate sound, they are the most comfortable headphones I’ve ever worn. The cable is the perfect length and easily removable for storage (in the awesome travel bag that’s included). I understand the price may make you nervous if you’ve never invested in something like this… but treat yourself! You won’t regret it.

11. Beyerdynamic DT 1990 Pro

These Beyerdynamic headphones are top-notch in terms of sound. The open back allows for plenty of space, creating a large soundstage. You’ll be able to hear where each instrument is playing during a song. And with all of the extra features, it’s a lot of bang for your buck.

Because the open back lets sound travel in and out, these headphones are best for home and studio use. If you’re around others, they’ll be able to hear what you’re listening to, and you’ll be able to hear them. So these headphones are designed for use in controlled environments.

Specifications

  • 250 Ohm Tesla Studio Reference Headphones
  • 3m straight and 5m coiled mini XLR to stereo cable
  • Analytical and well-balanced earpads
  • Hardcase
  • Cleaning set
  • 6mm (¼”) stereo jack plug
  • 2-year warranty
Pros
  • High sound quality
  • Comfortable
  • Sturdy
  • Includes cleaning tools
Cons
  • Not noise-cancelling
  • Best used at home

Sample Customer Review…The DT 1990’s are a different animal! You know you have something of quality in your hands when you first pick them up. The sound is simply amazing through a good amp. Bass, mids, and treble are all very detailed with no bleeding, muddiness, or overbearing sound from any part of the spectrum. They also have a pretty good sound stage which I really appreciate. I would really say they are my overall favorites and worth every penny!

12. Apple AirPods Max

The Apple AirPods Max boasts active noise cancellation and great sound quality. Their unique design sets them apart from most headphones on the market. Plus, they come in 5 different colors.

These over ear headphones are targeted toward, you guessed it, Apple users. They connect easily to newer iOS devices, enabling lots of great features for iPhone customers. Despite the audio performance, noise-canceling, and design, the price of these headphones isn’t quite justified if you’re an Android user.

Specifications

  • Active noise cancellation
  • Transparency mode
  • Connects to Apple devices
  • Memory foam ear cushions
Pros
  • Apple pairing and special features
  • High sound quality
  • Easy to use
  • Great noise cancellation
  • Comfortable
Cons
  • Pricey
  • No 3mm audio jack or port
  • Bulky case
  • Requires Apple device

Sample Customer Review…Are they worth $550? If you have an iPhone, yes. Android or anything else, maybe not. The iPhone will give you audio editing/tuning options that you will not find elsewhere. On the iPhone make sure you are updated to the latest iOS; that helps the phone truly recognize the headphones and then update the firmware of the headset itself.

I consider myself an audiophile, and when I try new headphones, the sound test I put them through is fairly simple. I play 5 key songs of different genres that I would say have “hidden sounds” or instruments that cheaper headphones would not catch. These pass the test and surpass the Bose and Sony headsets in separating instruments: the “soundstage” effect.

If you are a person who can’t tell the difference between good headphones versus others, don’t waste your time, because you won’t be able to justify the reasoning for the pricing. The comfort is amazing, and I can wear these for 4 hours plus with no discomfort. They look great, and noise cancellation is amazing on these headphones.

Buying Guide: Things To Consider Before Buying The Best Over Ear Headphones

Every product has ups and downs. To find the best over ear headphones for you, consider the factors below. Keep in mind what matters the most about your new headphones as you read.

Purpose

First, focus on the purpose of your over ear headphones. Do you plan to use these headphones at home, on long trips, or around town? Picturing yourself where you expect to use your headphones can help you decide on the most important features of your new headphones. For instance, choose headphones that are foldable and compact if you want to use them while traveling. Choose headphones with great sound and comfort for studio use.

Deciding how often and where you will use your over ear headphones is a huge factor because it helps determine the other qualities that can lead you to the best over ear headphones.

Price

Thinking about your budget will help you choose your headphones. If you’re a true audiophile with pocket money to spend, look for the best of the best. But if you’re looking for something to wear while working from home, find something more budget-friendly. There are plenty of great quality options no matter what’s in your bank account.

Sound Quality

Everyone wants good sound quality, but there are so many factors to the sound of headphones. All the products on the list offer a great sound quality. Still, some have a more crisp, detailed, and balanced sound with more bass, mids, and highs. If you like to have control over your sound, look for headphones with a mobile app for mixing the different aspects.

The best sound quality is found in wired headphones, but not everyone needs that kind of detailed sound for everyday listening. Considered your favorite music genres and the setting you’ll be listening to music or podcasts to get the most out of your headphones. After all, wireless noise-cancelling headphones will produce the best sound quality and comfort during your morning commute.

Added Features

Headphones offer lots of additional features, so pay attention to and prioritize the ones you’ll use. If noise cancellation is a priority, choose headphones that completely cancel out noise and instead of doing the job halfway. But if sound space is more important, look for headphones with an open back. These will have some leakage but offer greater sound quality.

Also, note whether or not your headphones are wireless. Bluetooth headphones are great for hassle-free listening on the go. But for intense sound quality and studio use, wired headphones are a better option.

Conclusion

There are some amazing over ear headphones out there, and each product has something for everyone. I hope the product you chose gives you the best listening experience for your preferences.
