Sample Customer Review…The best purchase I have ever made. I have had several different machines over the years, all Brother with the exception of my old school Kenmore that was handed down to me (I was 3rd to have it handed down to) which I loved but it finally bit the dust. This machine was worth every single penny. It has all the bells and whistles that matter; the speed, the durability, and power, the automatic thread cutter (which I have to say as simple as it is it’s the real game-changer)but this sewing machine is everything that is the best parts of a sewing machine. None of the frivolous extras that make it complicated; it’s just the things that you need and are most important and it takes it back to the basics like the full self customization of thread tension and powerful speed. But it also has the new “fancy bells and whistles” like the thread cutter. I can’t say enough about how much I love this machine. You won’t regret your purchase!

Pros
  • Feed system ideal for working with heavy materials
  • Control speed slider
  • Bright light over workspace
  • Optional foot control pedal
  • Portable
Cons
  • Not durable
  • Unexpectedly locks up
  • Inexpensively made
  • Lacks embroidery features

Sample Customer Review… I do a lot of sewing & machine quilting. This is my 3rd sewing machine after many years of sewing. This Brother HC1850 is the best I’ve ever had. It sews, quilts & embroideries with a computer that is easy to use. The instructions are clear enough for novice seamstresses. I am disabled so sometimes my leg muscles just will not work. This machine gives you a choice of using the foot pedal or you can use the controls on the machine. It will move the presser foot up/down, start your seam, then stop & lift the presser foot. Of course, you are in control of the buttons & the speed so it is comfortable for your use. Another plus is this machine is not as heavy as my other ones. I also use a serger which is a bit heavier than my sewing machine. This is a real help if you suffer from motor problems as I do. The price is very good for a computerized machine that does so much. Great buy!

3. Brother SE600

The Brother SE600 is the supreme sewing machine and outclasses many other sewing machines with its capabilities. Its value and usability are unmatched as it will give you the ability to sew away in creativity as you go through the variety of different projects you have.

Specifications

  • Type: Electric

  • Material: Metal
  • Dimensions: 21.18 x 15.51 x 16.54 in

Pros
  • 103 embroidery designs
  • LCD Color Touch Screen
  • 4 by 4 hoop
  • Automatic needle
  • 6 lettering fonts
  • 3 different sizes
  • Warranty
Cons
  • Not durable
  • Unpredictable needle threader

Sample Customer Review… I absolutely love this machine! I’ve only used it for embroidering so far, but it does a great job and is easy to use for a beginner like me. The color screen feature is great. The instruction manual is very helpful and easy to understand! The threading feature is also very nice and a lot better than the previous model with the cassette threader (a couple more steps, but it works every time) It has so many features that I have on my Babylock Symphony machine that cost over 6x as much as I paid through Amazon Prime. Some of the features are an automatic threader that actually works every time, a thread cutter, a stop-start dial, and a sliding dial to increase or decrease sewing speed. It also has a handle, making it easy to carry. I highly recommend this machine for anyone looking for a low-price machine.

4. Janome JW8100

The Janome JW8100 is a dependable machine that comes with a variety of features such as computerized sewing, an LCD screen, a detachable extension table, 100 built-in stitches, and 850 stitches per minute which sets the machine high respect.

Specifications

  • Type: Electric
  • Color: White
  • Brand: Janome
  • Weight: 12 lbs
  • Material: Metal
  • Dimensions: 16 x 7 x 12 in
  • Treadle powered
Pros
  • 850 stitches per minute
  • 100 Built-in Stitches
  • Detachable extension table
  • Computerized Sewing
  • LCD screen
Cons
  • No quilting foot
  • No automatic thread cutter

Sample Customer Review… Very pleased with this machine. I needed a lightweight machine for retreats and traveling. This only weighs 13 lbs total yet has every functionality that I need and sews extremely well. I have set it up in my sewing room with white thread and whenever I need something sewed quickly I use it rather than changing out the thread on my main sewing machine. Great beginner or traveling machine. Can handle layers for bag making. I really enjoy the different features. Learning to sew without a foot peddle is scary, but so much easier than I thought. The speed control is great because it helps to slow down the people who are foot heavy and can’t keep up. I’m very happy I bought this.

5. Juki HZL-F600

The Juki HZF-F600 helps you to gracefully sew and embroidery any of the projects you are working on. Having some knowledge of sewing and of a variety of sewing machines will help you to navigate the machine well. This machine is great for advanced sewers who are undergoing big projects.

  • Color: White
  • Brand: JUKI
  • Weight: 33.4 lbs
  • Material: Metal
  • Dimensions: 14 x 23 x 16 in
Pros
  • Random and Automatic stitch option
  • LED Lights
  • Control panel
  • 900 stitches per minute
Cons
  • Advanced Functions

Sample Customer Review… The features on this machine allow a sewist to go from garment sewing, hemming, and mending to household sewings like curtains and drapes, to quilting “seamlessly.” The transition from one function to the other is flawless. I’ve just finished a 108 X 112 king-size quilt and this machine would have made that process a breeze. I love the exact 1/4″ needle placement for scant 1/4″ piecing that is flawless each time. I love the thread cutter. This machine is quiet compared to base-level machines. As for lighting, there are two LED lights, one over the needle one over the bed. The machine is intuitive and easy to set up and operate right out of the box. I played with mine for half an hour and started piecing another quilt. This machine produces a quality stitch each time. I also love the bobbin winder, fills a smooth tight even bobbin, and has an independent bobbin motor so there is no need to stop sewing for bobbin filling. The free motion quilting foot is so well designed and makes FMQ a breeze. I can’t say enough about this machine.

6. SINGER Heavy Duty 4423

If you’re looking for a heavy-duty sewing machine, the Singer 4423 is a great choice. It’s fast, high-quality, and efficient, like other Singer products. Despite it being heavy-duty, it’s easy to carry around. It also has a high-sewing speed, plus an automatic needle. There is a foot pressure control in case you want it even faster. For advanced sewers looking for a heavy-duty machine, this product is for you.

Specifications

  • Type: Electric
  • Color: Grey
  • Brand: Singer
  • Weight: 14.5 lbs
  • Material: Metal
  • Dimensions: 15.5 x 6.25 x 12 in
  • Treadle powered
Pros
  • Affordable
  • Automatic needle
  • 1100 stitches per minute
  • Easy to use
  • Portable
  • Heavy duty
Cons
  • Thread gets jammed in bobbin area
  • Loud

Sample Customer Review… I’ve been using a 1942 Bel Aire (Singer knock off from back in the day. Weighs about 35lbs and has an externally housed motor) for years. It’s gotten to the point where the thought of wrestling with that beast has made me stop sewing! I realized I had a pile of projects building up, so I did my research and found this beauty. I had it out of the box and fully set up in less than 10 min with their clear picture instructions, and grabbed a bit of scrap, and made a simple pouch in about 90 seconds without any issues or readjustments needed. The stitches are beautiful. The machine is fast and precise and feels sturdy while still being quiet and lightweight. A lot of the complaints in the reviews (though there aren’t many) must be from novice sewers because I have never used such a beautiful and effective machine! No weird parts (people were saying they wished they had a spool cap…but there is one. Also something about a felt piece for the bobbin? Crazy talk), no bird nests, simple and clear knobs, and threading. And the automatic threader is so simple and genius! It will save some much time. Love the LED light, it is bright and effective. I would say more, but I have about 6 months worth of sewing to catch up on!

7. SINGER 9960

With the Singer 9960, there are a variety of aspects that makes this machine efficient, with a lot to offer. For your embroidery and sewing needs, it can adapt to any sort of material that you can use for your projects. This machine can give you gentle seams, delicate designs, and multiple sheets for your projects with the highest mastery.

  • Type: Electric
  • Color: White
  • Brand: SINGER
  • Weight: 20 lbs
  • Material: Metal
  • Dimensions: 16 x 7 x 12 in
  • Treadle powered
Pros
  • Sewing Speed control
  • 990 Built-in stitches
  • LCD screen
  • Optimized control and accessories
Cons
  • Pressure foot
  • Size of letters

Sample Customer Review… This machine is an absolute joy to use! How could anyone find fault with it, or rate it with anything less than 5 stars? To just touch on a couple of my favorite features: first off, I never even use the foot pedal anymore; the very sensitive and clearly-marked buttons that control starting, as well as the Speed control slider, just make the foot pedal obsolete; for me, anyway. OK, and when you reach the end of your seam, hit Stop, and then you can touch another button, marked with a pair of scissors — the machine chirps, the needle lifts, and both threads are cut! Another button lets you pick whether to have the needle in the raised or lowered position whenever you’re stopped. And the needle-threader! Makes threading the needle such a piece of cake, and it’s no matter if the thread-end is frayed; it pushes a loop of your thread through the needle a few inches from the end! And you can wind bobbins while the needle is still threaded. I’m so happy to own one of these beautiful machines, you will be, too.

8. SINGER 9985

Similar to other Singer models, the Singer 9985 is an excellent addition to the other models and is a perfect model for your embroidery needs, and will do a good job of sewing. The Singer 9985 is an easy machine to work with and has some good sides to the machine.

  • Type: Electric
  • Color: White
  • Brand: SINGER
  • Weight: 20 lbs
  • Material: Metal
  • Dimensions: 17.25 x 8.5 x 12.5 in
  • Treadle powered
Pros
  • 960 built-in stitches
  • LCD Color Screen
  • Threading system
  • Automatic needle threader
Cons
  • Price

Sample Customer Review… I absolutely love it. Runs quiet, and absolutely perfect stitches every time. It’s very nice to be able to go to your machine, turn it on push a button and sew to your heart’s content. Singer, you knocked it out of the ballpark with this machine. Love all the 600 stitches, all the things that you can change on the stitches to make whatever you are sewing come out so perfect. From elongation to mirror imaging. Plus love love love the thread cutter in this machine. It sure cuts down on wasted thread. Easy needle threader as well. Plus I also love the automatic reverse sew as well. No more oops I forgot to backstitch to lock the seams. Singer, I think you had nailed everything into this machine that people could ever want. Very easy to learn to operate this machine. Everything has a learning curve to it. But for the most part, I found it to be very easy.

  • One-step buttonholes
  • 100 built-in stitches
  • Electric auto-pilot and speed control
Cons
  • Thread jams easily
  • Short foot pedal cord
  • Noisy operation

Sample Customer Review… I received this sewing machine as a birthday gift. I’m a beginner sewer and have been teaching myself. This machine has been great. It is very easy to thread. It has a ton of stitch patterns to choose from. I have only used the basic stitches needed to mend a few clothes. I haven’t gotten into using all of the fancy designs, but I did play around with testing a few of them and they seemed to work properly once you got the hang of feeding it through the machine at the right place.

Also down with the push of a button, you can set your sewing speed (slow for us beginners and speed it up once you get better), a reverse stitch button, an automatic needle threader (which took some time to figure out but now I love!), and it came with an assortment of presser feet. As I said, I’m a newbie, so I haven’t used all the presser feet and am not even sure I know what all of them are used for. I think for the price and all the options you get, it’s a great deal!

The machine seems to be well made and sturdy. Plus all the options and gadgets are nice.

  • Reasonably priced
  • High-quality stitching

  • Includes machine cover
  • Convenient usability of stitch selector
  • Free arm for greater mobility
  • Abundance of accessories
Cons
  • Somewhat loud
  • Small foot pedal cord
  • Immobile
  • Heavy

Sample Customer Review…I love this machine! I sew a lot, sometimes many hours a day for days at a time. I stick fairly close to the basic stitches, straight, some zig-zag, and buttonholes, so I really do not need a $3,000 machine that does 200 stitches. I have been using my last Singer for 30 years. I decided to treat myself to a new machine, and after reading a lot of reviews, bought this one. It was truly like going from a black and white TV to a new color flat-screen. It is so easy to use! I love the storage compartment for the various attachments. It takes about two seconds to change a pressure foot. Although it is basic enough not to need much instruction for an experienced seamstress, the instruction booklet is extremely easy to follow. I usually do all of my hems by hand, but decided to try the blind hem available on the machine, when doing a set of drapes. It turned out beautifully, and of course, took a fraction of the time. Highly recommend!

11. Janome Magnolia 7318

The Janome Magnolia 7318 is a great choice for experienced sewers. It’s very easy to use, with features like a thread cutter and jam prod bobbin system. It has 18 stitch patterns and a 4 step buttonhole feature, which keeps the sewing simple. Janome has also minimized the scale and weight as much as they could, which is an added bonus. With its simplicity and accuracy, sewing will be easier than ever.

Specifications

  • Type: Electric
  • Color: White
  • Brand: Janome
  • Weight: 17 lbs
  • Material: Metal
  • Dimensions: 22 x 13 x 18.5 in
Pros
  • Easy to use
  • Portable
  • Jam proof bobbin
  • 18 stitches
  • 4 step buttonhole
  • 7 piece feed dog
Cons
  • Expensive
  • Restricted view of drop feed
  • Not computerized

Sample Customer Review… As a complete beginner, it was so easy to set up, start playing with and actually begin to sew with. The stitching is nice and it was fun to may my own “examples” so I know what I need to use when making projects. It is a wonderfully simple machine with enough bells and whistles to keep me busy for quite some time. I do not perceive that I will outgrow this model for a while, even though I eventually plan to make elaborate items of classic ladies’ clothing with it. So far, I have already made an apron and it is a two-sided/reversible type. Literally, one hour out of the box it worked great – no snags, no birds nests – just nice even stitches. Even the reverse button works well for strengthening the straps! I’m pleased it is light enough to carry although I purchased a nice roller bag specifically made for sewing machines so I could pack it back and forth between classes, a small sewing circle my friends and I created, and to my boyfriend’s home. As a true beginner, I am really enjoying the process, and I believe it is because this Janome is well-rated, and has lived up to everything I read about it. I would recommend it to those who are considering taking up sewing or just want a sturdy, functional, yet enjoyable machine.
