Sample Customer Review…This was a step up from my previous Brother machine. It gives me so many excellent stitches and my fabric art is greatly embellished by the options it provides. The tension holds so well when switching from light to heavy fabrics. It was so easy to clean when I wanted to do maintenance under the presser foot plate. I love the slow stitch option. It is perfect for when I am making small circles or detailed stitches in a small area. It also allows me to sew through many layers of heavy fabric without needles breaking. I love the extended arm for a working surface. I am truly pleased with this machine. I like it so much that I bought one for my sister.

2. Brother PQ1500SL Quilting And Sewing Machine

This powerhouse of a sewing machine is perfect for any quilting or sewing job you can possibly come up with. The crazy amount of features that the Brother PQ1500SL includes will blow your mind. The automatic needle threader is very handy so you can start your project easily. Many people stated how easy this machine can stitch through multiple layers of fabric without getting stuck. There is also a knee lever for lifting the presser foot which no sewist should go without.

At a speed of 1500 stitches per minute, you will barely be able to keep up with the machine. You will fly through your projects with no trouble at all. One thing that sets this machine apart from others of its kind is the amount of control you will have over the feed dog. This machine includes 4 different levels of adjustments that change the speed of the pressure foot and the feed dog. With the numerous positive reviews online, you just cannot pass up buying this machine.

Features

  • Stitch Speed: 1500 stitches per minute

  • Product Weight: 32 pounds-Heavy duty frame

Cons
  • More expensive

Sample Customer Review…The BEST purchase I have ever made. I have had several different machines over the years, all brother with the exception of my old school Kenmore that was handed down to me (I was 3rd to have it handed down to) which I loved, but it finally bit the dust. This machine was worth every single penny. It has all the bells and whistles that matter: the speed, the durability, the power, the automatic thread cutter (which I have to say is the real game-changer), but this sewing machine is everything that is the best parts of a sewing machine. It has none of the frivolous extras that make it complicated. It’s just the things that you need and are most important, and it takes it back to the basics like the full self customization of thread tension and powerful speed but has the new “fancy bells and whistles” like the thread cutter. I can’t say enough about how much I love this machine. You won’t regret your purchase!

3. Brother HC1850 Computerized Sewing And Quilting Machine

The Brother HC1850 includes tons of features to make your sewing and quilting experience fun and easy. Some of these features include an automatic needle threader, 130 different stitches, and an attachable quilting table perfect for any of your projects. The computerized stitch system on the front of the machine makes picking out the perfect stitch easier than ever. This machine can accomplish most tasks as it can quilt, sew, and embroider without any trouble.

Many people talk about how easy it is to learn how to work with this machine. It is perfect for any beginner quilter or sewist. This machine is also on the lighter side being only 10.1 pounds. This makes the machine portable and easy to take anywhere. The price is cheap and fits into most people’s budgets. Best of all, buying this machine buys you a 25-year warranty which is something you do not want to miss out on.

Features

  • Sewing Speed: 850 stitches per minute
  • Throat Space: 5.75 inches
  • Product Weight: 10 pounds
  • 130 different stitches
  • Extra-wide sewing table
  • Automatic needle-threader
  • Large LCD display screen
  • 25-year warranty
Pros
  • Many stitch and embroidery machine patterns
  • Detachable wide table
  • Light and portable sewing machine
  • Automatic needle threader
  • Easy-to-use beginner machine
  • On the cheaper side
Cons
  • Very light (10 lbs) so may tip when working with a larger crafting project
  • Some people complain that the machine is loud
  • The machine was built with cheap material

Sample Customer Review…I am more than impressed with my new Brother Quilting Machine. My last sewing machine I paid over $1000 for and it does not even begin to compare with my new Brother Quilting Machine that I paid less than $200 for. The machine is so easy to use, I am even teaching my 6-year-old grandson how to sew on this machine. The advanced needle threader is one of the best features. Ease in threading the needle has never been better. I cannot believe for less than $200 this sewing machine has 130 sewing stitches and 55 alphanumeric stitches, not to mention the 8 different styles of buttonholes with an auto-sizing! It is so user-friendly utilizing the LCD screen–touch the screen to select the stitches and you are then able to view the stitch prior to putting it into action. My first Brother sewing machine and I am sold on Brother.

4. Brother CS7000i-Computerized Sewing And Quilting Machine

This quilting and sewing machine has been the number 1 selling sewing machine on Amazon for years. It’s no question that this machine is popular for beginner quilters. Reviews from all over Amazon explain how easy-to-use this machine is. The price is easily affordable for anyone that is just starting out this hobby. This machine can stitch through heavy and light fabric in a breeze.

This quilting machine is one of the cheapest quilting machines out there that have a computerized system on the machine. The extended quilting table and 70 built-in stitches make this machine one of the easiest ones to use. The computerized system lets the sewist choose from countless different stitch options and that will make quilting easy as pie!

At this point, you may be wondering if there is something that this machine cannot do. Well, there isn’t much missing from this quilting beast. One of the downfalls is that since this is not a heavy-duty machine, it is on the lighter side of things. You would have to be careful when quilting very heavy fabrics as the machine might tip to one side. One last con about this machine: some people have experienced difficulty threading the needle, even with the automatic needle threader. However, this is not a complaint from every single person that buys this machine; so I would not worry about this too much.

Overall, this sewing machine might be one of the best out there for beginner quilters.

Features

  • A Speed Of 850 stitches Per Minute
  • A Throat Space Of 5.25 Inches
  • The product weight is: 17 pounds
  • 70 built-in stitches
  • 7 styles of the 1-step buttonhole
  • Auto thread cutter
  • Easy bobbin winder
  • LCD touchscreen stitch selector
  • 10 different sewing and quilting feet
  • Extended quilting table
  • A built-in LED light to brighten your work area
  • Auto-needle threading
Pros
  • 70 built-in stitches
  • Auto-needle threading
  • Pretty Inexpensive
  • Easy to use
  • Light and portable sewing machine
Cons
  • Lighter than some other machines so it may tip if working on very large/ heavy quilts
  • Hard to thread on some occasions

Sample Customer Review…My wife wanted to get back into sewing after decades away from doing anything with a sewing machine and was interested in learning to quilt. We had an older machine, and it was difficult to use and finicky on settings. I felt it would discourage her interest to constantly fight with it, so began researching a new one. The predecessor to this unit, the CS6000i, seemed a real owner favorite. It took forever to find this new one in stock anywhere, but it finally came available on Amazon so I ordered it as a surprise for her. She loves it! With the machine difficulties eliminated, her enjoyment of sewing has really taken off. I may have created a monster, but it’s a happy monster! The machine has good capabilities, many stitches built-in, and a better array of presser feet than any machine I found in this range, and includes a walking foot. The removable table and surround make it versatile. It isn’t a huge machine, so the area to the right of the needle isn’t as plentiful as an expensive long arm machine, but it’s not bad. You can drop the feed dogs for freehand quilting if you’d like. It sews very smoothly, with easy tension adjustments, needle threader help, decent lighting, and easy bobbin threading and loading… just a great machine at this price point. She’s making amazing things with it!

5. Brother CS6000i Sewing and Quilting Machine

If you are looking for a sewing and quilting machine that’s easily portable, the Brother CS6000i is for you! This beginner-friendly machine offers smooth functionality at an affordable price, offering 60 included stitch options, a computerized display, and an automatic needle threader. It differs slightly from the Brother CS7000i, offering ten fewer stitch options while being slightly cheaper.

The Brother CS6000i has easy set-up–it does not require a pedal, winding the bobbin is a breeze, and you can switch the presser feet with a nifty lever on the machine. Once set up, it is extremely efficient, clocking in at 850 stitches per minute.

While the Brother CS6000i is a great quilting machine, it’s not as capable of handling heavier fabrics, so stick to lighter products while using it. It also has a smaller throat size, which might make larger quilting projects trickier.

Features

  • 60 stitch options
  • 7 button hole styles
  • Drop-in bobbin
  • Automatic needle threader
  • 25-year limited warranty
Pros
  • Great for beginners
  • Easy set up
  • Efficient stitching
  • Good price for quality
Cons
  • Heavier fabrics more difficult to handle
  • Small throat size

Sample Customer Review…I’ve had this sewing machine for several years now and I’m just now getting around to writing a review. But I have recommended this to so many of my friends and family that were looking to buy a sewing machine. I love my Brother CS6000i. It has just enough options and extras, but not too much. I am a novice sewer, I do lots of odds and ends projects and this works for so much. It has lovely stitches and stitch options, and I love the drop-in bobbin as well. It is easy to thread and simple to use. The reverse button on the front of the machine is also a very nice feature and the adjustable speeds are very helpful, especially if you have a heavy foot and don’t want to go 100 miles an hour unintentionally. I also work with a lot of denim and have had no issues; it sews through thicker materials quite well. This machine in my opinion is excellent, especially for the price, which is unbeatable for the quality.

6. Brother Sewing and Quilting Machine, XR3774

This sewing machine is definitely one that will not break the bank. If you are on a budget, this is the machine for you as it is one of the cheapest ones out there that can do the job of a quilting machine. Even though it may be on the cheaper side, it doesn’t mean you miss out on the same features that wallet breaking machines have.

This machine is absolutely perfect for sewing stitches in just about any fabric. With its easily attachable extension table, quilting is also made possible. Although this machine does not have a computerized system for picking out stitches, you still have the option of choosing between 37 different stitches for your project. Using this machine is easier than using the computerized system because of the stitch selector dial on the front of the machine. This machine also possesses walking and quilting feet which make quilting large blankets very easy.

Along with the automatic needle threader, this machine easily competes with most machines that cost twice as much as this one. If you are someone on a budget looking for a soothing hobby; this is the machine for you.

Features

  • 37 different sewing stitches
  • A Dial for selecting stitches
  • Jam-resistant drop-in bobbin
  • Free arm and attachable extension table
  • Automatic needle-threader
  • Extension for Sewing Table
Pros
  • 37 different stitches
  • 8 different sewing feet
  • This sewing machine will work within a budget
  • Easy to learn how to use
  • Cheaper than most quilting machines
Cons
  • It doesn’t have retractable feeder dogs like some other quilting machines
  • No computerized system for choosing stitches
  • Complaints about stitches changing lengths while sewing

Sample Customer Review…I love this machine. My old machine was a Singer and I had problems with it since day one…40 years ago. This machine right out of the box is a dream! I haven’t mastered all the fancy stitches yet, but am working on it. It is light and easy to transport. I like the little table attachment. I find the directions clear in the manual, but being a visual person I find that “playing” with the machine is how I learn. There are some good instructional videos on YouTube as well. For a fairly basic machine with a few extras but not every bell and whistle the price is reasonable. Overall I am very happy with my new Brother XR3774 and would not hesitate to recommend it to others. I would definitely buy it again.

7. Juki TL-2000qi Sewing And Quilting Machine

The Juki TL-2000qi is known for being one of the best sewing machines for quilting out on the market right now. The large throat space is extremely useful for quilting as it gives the sewist lots of room to work. It is on the more expensive side of things, however, its quality is impeccable. This machine can average speeds of 1500 stitches per minute! You will barely be able to keep up with the speed of this machine.

Like many sewing machines of this caliber, it has an automatic needle threader, an extension table, and bright LED lighting. What sets this machine apart from others of its kind is the free-motion quilting aspect. This machine will provide no resistance for your free-motion quilting and will put you in complete control of the speed and direction of the stitches. The instructions for this machine do not provide much information, however, Youtube is the perfect place to go if you have any questions. Although the price of this machine is a little hefty, you get amazing quality and all the right features for your quilting projects.

Features

  • Sewing Speed: 1500 stitches per minute
  • Throat Space: 8.5 inch – large throat space
  • Product Weight: 36 pounds
  • Automatic needle threading
  • Updated LED lighting
  • Attached Extension table with a large sewing area
  • Stable thread tension when free-motion quilting
Pros
  • Fast stitching
  • Single needle straight stitch
  • Large extension table
  • Even feed foot
  • Heavy frame – no tipping or bouncing while working on heavy-duty fabric
Cons
  • Expensive
  • The bobbin locks up sometimes
  • A couple of people received the machine and some of its pieces were missing
  • The fabric holding feet are low and it’s sometimes hard to layer fabric

Sample Customer Review…I am absolutely in love with this machine! I have had a Singer Curvy for basic sewing for the last 8 years, but I wanted to upgrade to a quilting machine. After much research, I chose the Juki as it had great reviews and is sturdy enough to be able to sew canvas which I will need in the future. It has NOT disappointed me! It is a very sturdy build (which means it does have some weight) which makes for incredibly smooth sewing. I’m used to a machine that vibrates so much my entire workspace bounces. My table stays completely still. Setup was very simple when following the instructions, and it was fun to find all of the little “perks” this machine has that I didn’t know existed. Every issue that I have had with my Juki has been due to user error, and the one time I was SURE it wasn’t me, I contacted Juki support and had a technician solve my problem within hours of emailing. (Hint, the problem was me.) So I now have a very sturdy, high-quality machine, and great customer service and support to back it up. Worth EVERY penny!

8. Juki TL-2010Q

The number of reviews talking about how amazing this product makes it impossible not to include this machine on the “Best sewing machines for quilting” list. This sewing machine was built for tailoring, but it also makes an amazing quilting machine. There is only 1 option for a stitch, however, this makes the machine ready-to-use anytime you need it. It is a light-weight and portable machine. All you need to do is plug it in, thread the needle, and you are good to go.

This machine is one of the fastest ones out there. It can sew up to 1500 stitches per minute! That is so fast, you will probably have to slow it down because you cannot keep up with it. This machine will help you blow through projects so fast you will be left wondering how it was able to go so fast. The attachable working table that comes along with the machine gives easy control of the fabric to the sewist.

Reliability is something rare to come by when talking about sewing machines. The Juki TL-2010Q has proven to be one of those few rare ones. Its reliability is something to be in awe of as its customers can’t help but talk about how sturdy and smooth it is. If you are looking for a machine that will last; look no further.

Features

  • Up to 1500 stitches per minute
  • Foot and Sliding Speed Control
  • Comes with a large (12 x 23) working table
  • Knee-lift and a needle up-down
  • Lightweight, and portable
  • Automatic thread trimmer
  • Bobbin loads from the side
Pros
  • It sews fast, quiet, and smooth
  • Very strong and sews through the thick fabric without lagging and maintaining evenly sized stitches
  • Nice extension table
  • Very responsive foot control
  • Perfectly formed straight stitches
  • Knee lifter
  • Very sturdy
Cons
  • Manual could be better
  • The needle threader takes some practice to learn
  • Some reported the light is a bit dim
  • Only 1 kind of stitch
  • Expensive

Sample Customer Review…What a dream machine. I needed a straight stitch for piecing and the ability to quilt including free motion quilting. This is the machine. It is substantial. With a larger harp area, it is easy to see what you quilt. The table helps support larger items. It has a couple of more steps to thread than my Singer, but it was not difficult. I like the bobbin that loads from the side. The auto trim is neat. It snips top and bottom threads and doesn’t lose the bobbin thread. I am finding this to be a great feature. This is really a workhorse machine. The stitch is consistent and it feeds the piecing very well. The feed dogs take the fabric easily. I am really falling in love with this machine already. I debated on the price, but after quilting a lap quilt, which would have cost over $100 at the quilters, I feel it will pay for itself in no time. If this machine could talk it would say, “Here, let me help you with that.” Love it!!

9. Janome MC6650 Computerized Sewing And Quilting Machine

The 170 different stitches sound amazing to any quilter, but with the LCD screen, picking the perfect stitch is easier than ever. Janome is very well known for its high-quality sewing and quilting machines and the Janome MC6650 is no exception. The top-loading bobbin system and the automatic needle threader make this super easy to use for the average quilter. The product weight, of 34 pounds, makes this machine very heavy duty and able to withstand some of the thickest material without even flinching.

The bobbin loading system is jam-proof and therefore, you will have no problems with the bobbin no matter which project you are working on. On the control panel, there is a button that automatically cuts the thread in your bobbin. This feature is something that sewists only dream of. There is also a reverse stitch that will allow you to reserve back and reinforce the stitches you just finished. The number of features in this machine are unbelievable. The cost of this machine is pretty up there, but if you are looking for the easiest quilting machine to use, this one is it.

Features

  • Sewing Speed: 100 stitches per minute
  • Throat Space: 10-inch throat space
  • Product Weight: 34 pounds
  • 170 built-in sewing stitches
  • A Top-Loading Bobbin System
  • An attachable extension table
  • Automatic needle threader
  • Easy-To-Use Control Panel and LCD Screen
Pros
  • 170 different stitching options
  • Automatic needle threader
  • Jam-proof bobbin loading system
  • A thread trimmer
Cons
  • Expensive
  • Does not stitch as fast as some machines

Sample Customer Review…I am a beginner quilter. I don’t have very much experience with sewing but have had a few machines for small projects–two Brother machines and a Baby Lock. I absolutely love this machine! It is easy to use, has many features and stitches (I really love the auto-lock stitch and thread cutter!), and sews a straight line perfectly. I plan to get the knee lifter but have not done that yet. It is easy to thread and change the needle and the bobbin. The bobbin winder is a great extra feature. It has many features that I have not tried out yet, but the ones I have tried work great. I would highly recommend this.

10. Singer Quantum Stylist 9960 Sewing Machine

The Singer Quantum Stylist is a well-loved machine throughout most beginner and intermediate quilters. This machine includes most everything that people are looking for in a quilting sewing machine.

The easy-to-use automatic needle threader makes starting new projects easy; even for beginners. This quilting machine includes 600 different stitches and 13 different styles of 1-step buttonholes. It also includes 5 different fonts for people who are interested in monogramming. The attachable large quilting table is perfect for those quilters who need extra room. You will also get to choose between 18 different presser feet which will help you personalize your machine for exactly what you need. Something that sets this machine apart from others is its 25-year warranty on everything that is included in the purchase.

Lastly, you can also adjust the sewing speed level by easily moving a lever on the machine. You will definitely not regret buying this machine and all of its amazing features.

Features

  • Sewing Speed: 850 stitches per minute
  • Throat Space: 5.5-inch throat space
  • Product Weight: 20 pounds
  • 600 built-in stitches
  • Automatic needle threader
  • 13 sewing and quilting feet
  • Drop-in bobbin system
  • Extension table
  • Electronic twin needle settings
  • Heavy-duty metal frame
Pros
  • 600 stitches
  • Automatic needle threader
  • 25 needle positions
  • Computerized system
  • 25-year warranty
Cons
  • You are unable to use the quilting bar with the walking foot
  • This machine has been reported to seize up sometimes
  • Stitches badly on sheer fabric

Sample Customer Review…This is a great machine. I’m so happy with my purchase. It sews smoothly. It’s easy to operate. The video is very helpful and was very easy to understand. It’s easy to thread, wind bobbins, and sew. It’s not so light that it walks while you sew. The extras that come with this machine are amazing. The extended platform is large enough to be very useful. After I showed my sister the embroidery stitches and that it can elongate and mirror, and put her name on a pretty piece of fabric, she ordered one for herself. She got it yesterday and said it sews as smoothly as mine. The machine she has used for the last many years is a Juki, and she loves it. I’ve been using it daily. I’m still “sew” happy with my purchase. It does everything I’ve asked of it. Definitely would buy it again.

I love the features like the needle threader and thread cutter. So far I have made clothes and done piecing and free motion quilting with no issues at all. Sews thick fabrics easily too. I have been giving it a workout and it never disappoints! I have pieced, free motion quilted and bound quilts, made fidget blankets, made kids costumes, curtains, pillows, and clothes. I have never had an issue with it…..wish I had bought one years ago. And the decorative stitches and buttonholes are very professional looking. Makes my projects look better than ever!

12. Bernette B77 Sewing and Quilting Machine

The Bernette B77 Sewing and Quilting Machine is great for quilting because of its large throat and user-friendliness. It can tackle many layers of fabric while still maintaining stitch quality. With a wide variety of stitches and buttonhole options, the sky’s the limit with thousands of different stitch and buttonhole combinations. The sewing area offers plenty of room for thick fabrics and even has LEDs that provide a well-lit sewing experience. In addition to quilting, the machine handles traditional sewing and even embroidery, and the 5-inch computerized touch screen allows for easy settings selection.

While the Bernette B77 Sewing and Quilting Machine has many attractive features, it might be best for advanced sewers who know how to apply the breadth of options the machine provides. Additionally, as a luxury machine, the Bernette B77 is relatively expensive, so if you’re considering this model, be prepared to make an investment.

Features

  • 5-inch color touch screen
  • Knobs with quick multi-function
  • Needle threader with semi-automatic function
  • Dual feed
  • 500 stitch options
  • 17 buttonhole options
  • Foot with programmable control and back-kick ability
Pros
  • Lots of stitch options
  • Spacious sewing area
  • Versatile
  • Large touch screen
Cons
  • Expensive
  • Might be better for more experienced sewers

Sample Customer Review… I am an experienced sewer who is looking to fine-tune my skills and work on a quality machine. I was given a Bernina 1008 from a friend, and although it is 35 years old, it still creates the perfect stitch. However, I have been wanting to purchase a more modern machine with a longer throat base. I have purchased and sampled many machines, and I am blown away by the Bernette 77. This machine is a keeper! I was very close to buying a Bernina 750 QE, but this Bernette, made with the same industrial standards as the Bernina and was created by the granddaughter of the Bernina owner, does not disappoint. The onboard touchscreen can be utilized by a stylus or your finger. The layout is identical or very similar to the Bernina menus. And the quality is outstanding. I am so pleased with this purchase at 1/5 the cost of a Bernina! Just do it!

Buying Guide

What Material Are You Using?

Think about what material you are planning to use. A thick fabric such as canvas or denim will need a machine that can easily take on a heavy-duty job. If you are using a lighter fabric to quilt with, almost all machines (big or small) will be able to complete the job.

What Weight Are You Looking For In A Machine?

The weight of the machine is very important when you are looking to quilt. The weight ties in directly with what material you are using. If you are using heavy-duty material, you need a heavy machine so it won’t tip over when it is stitching. If you are planning on using thinner material, then the weight of the machine isn’t too important. A sewing machine that is at least 25 pounds will give the most stability when quilting if stability is what you are looking for.

What Is A Bobbin System?

A bobbin system can look scary and complicated. No need to worry, however. A top-loading, drop-in bobbin is a great feature, in any sewing machine, that reduces all of the steps you need to take when the bobbin is on the front of the machine. As long as there are no bad reviews about the bobbin system, it should do its job smoothly; no matter what project you are working on.

Size of the Sewing Table

While quilting, the width and length of the machine and its table is very important. The bigger the table, the more control you have when sewing in the stitches. Expandable tables are perfect for quilting so keep an eye out for those.

Stitches

What kind of stitches are you looking to sew? You want a machine that has many different options in stitches you can use. Even better, if the machine can let you customize the stitches’ width and length, then you will be able to personalize your projects even more. Tension control would be an even bigger bonus and will give you a variety of options for your projects.

Needle Threader

A built-in needle threader is not necessary, however, it will help and save lots of time. Threading faster and easier means less frustration when trying to start a new thread. Always keep a lookout for a machine that has its own built-in needle threader.

Conclusion

I hope this list helped you find the best sewing machines for quilting! Make sure you know exactly what you need in a quilting machine before making a purchase. Now go on and shop!

Happy Quilting!
