Sample Customer Review…I bought this sewing machine in 2014. I needed a portable machine to take outside to sew some strapping on our dune buggy frame… and to do some miscellaneous sewing for outdoor projects. I didn’t want to take my ‘nice’ machines outside and risk damaging them… so I decided buying this inexpensive machine would be a good choice. I figured I’d leave it in the garage and it would be my outside machine. The funny thing is though… I fell in love with this machine and it’s become my everyday machine. I haven’t used my big expensive cabinet machines in 4 years now. I have used this machine to sew a variety of lightweight to heavyweight projects with zero machine problems. No broken needles, no jams, no tension problems! This machine is very durable and is super easy to thread. I made several ‘doodle books’ for my grandkids last Christmas … Using heavyweight fusible facing, and padding, some pieces were 1/4 inch + thick… this machine sewed through it like butter. I recommend this machine to anyone… beginning to professional… this machine is a keeper!

2. Brother RLX3817A

This product from Brother is a great option for a machine around the house and maybe a smaller business setup. It is a great blue color and has a very sleek design. Brother is a reliable brand and their machines are always a great choice. This particular model comes with 17 built-in stitches such as those for normal clothes, decorations, and ones made for specific materials.

Specifications

  • Dimension of 17.3 x 14.3 x 7.1 inches
  • Weight of 12.75 pounds
  • 17 Built-in stitches
  • 25-year warranty
Pros
  • 17 built in-stitches
  • User-friendly control dial
  • Appealing design
Cons
  • Less stitch options than other products
  • No LED light

Sample Customer Review…This is not a kid’s machine. For the price, I had expected a machine only capable of doing very basic things like repairing a torn seam, or kids’ projects. But this does almost everything the full-sized heavy machines do including buttonholes, lots of different stitches. It includes a DVD tutorial that is also on Youtube and I used it to learn to thread it, saw what I was doing wrong, and now that I know the proper way to thread it ( and it really is simple) I have done lots of things with it including hemming, made a dress and repaired many articles I had planned on taking to the dry cleaner for alteration. For the price of this machine, I have already saved 3 or 4 times what I would have paid at the dry cleaners.

There is a full warranty, and it is in perfect shape. The blue flowers make it look nice as well.

I would recommend this for beginners and experienced sewers alike.

3. Singer Start 1304 Sewing Machine

The next machine we would recommend would be the Singer Start 1304. This specific model is a very good choice for beginners, people on the go, and experienced sewers alike. It is a portable and compact machine but that does not take away from the durability of the product. The Singer 1304 has a metal frame which makes for a very strong and sturdy machine.

Specifications

  • 6 built-in stitches such as straight, blind hem, zipper, zigzag, sewing buttons, and scallop
  • Dimension of 13 x 7 x 11.5 inches
  • Weight of 11.5 pounds
  • 25-year warranty
  • Speed: 350-400 stitches per minute
  • 3 different types of presser foot: multi-function presser foot, zipper leg, sewing button
  • 4 step buttonhole
Pros
  • User friendly machine
  • Mechanical design
  • Great for kids and people who are just starting to learn
  • Durable metal frame
  • Not very noisy and very easy to operate
Cons
  • Could run into issues with thicker fabrics
  • Less stitch options
  • Needle threader issues, but can be resolved with practice

Sample Customer Review…I bought this sewing machine after reading reviews about its ease of operation and that it was a good machine for beginners. I have never sewed a thing in my life, and I have certainly never used a sewing machine. I had a project I needed this for and it was easier to buy a machine than try to find time to use someone else’s. This machine was incredibly easy to set up. It comes with step-by-step directions and diagrams. It took me about 45 minutes to set up, again, because I had absolutely no idea what I was doing, but it was no fault for the directions at all. Once the machine was up and running, I was able to complete my project with ease. I was sewing some heavy-duty fleece fabric and had zero issues with the machine. I was really impressed with how my son’s Jedi robe turned out. I would recommend this machine to anyone looking for a simple machine. I am not sure what kind of limitations it has for the advanced sewers, but, for basic, it’s perfect!

4. Janome Fastlane Sewing Machine

The next on the list for best sewing machines under $100 is the Janome Fastlane sewing machine. This specific model is designed to be very compact and portable while also coming in a variety of colors. This tends to be a great choice for someone living in a small area like a dorm, an apartment, or people who are just taking classes and have to constantly bring their machines around to different places.

This machine is especially helpful for beginners. The best option might be to start with this machine and then once you get more comfortable with sewing in general you can level up to a better, more advanced machine.

Specifications

  • Includes 10 integrated stitches like zigzag, straight, and two needle positions
  • Bobbin drop-in front
  • Built-in storage and a free arm allows for skill-building and experimentation with different styles
  • Finger guard and a presser foot
  • 25-year warranty
  • Five pounds
  • Dimensions of 10.5 x 5 x 9 inches
Pros
  • Diverse range of colors to choose from
  • Great option to use for teaching children to sew or to teach yourself.
  • Very portable, get up and go style
  • Cheap price options for a quality product
Cons
  • Parts can be fragile leading to a short lifespan
  • Not very durable
  • Not battery powered, could present portability issues if no plugs

Sample Customer Review…I ordered this machine, although somewhat hesitant because of its low price, to teach my two daughters (7+9) to sew. It is very lightweight and petite – doesn’t take up much space at all. Straight out of the box it sewed perfectly! While not an industrial machine for sure, we have used it to complete many projects in the last 2 months and it has had no problems at all. For anyone wondering about fabrics, we have successfully sewn through flannel, fleece, quilting cotton, and felt – up to 6 layers of the thinner fabrics at seams, and 2 layers of thicker fabrics such as the felt and fleece. The machine’s motor changes tone when it is challenged by a task that it struggles with (too many layers) so while it continues sewing, I’m not sure that it would be good to do it for long (a whole project vs a seam join). The machine is also easy to thread – both my daughters have no problem with it, and because of its slower maximum speed (compared with my larger machine), it is much less intimidating for them! Highly recommend this especially as the first machine for kids.

5. Magicfly Mini Sewing Machine

The Magicfly Mini Sewing Machine comes with a bag to place the machine in. This is convenient considering the sewing machine’s small size, which makes it perfect to store or even travel with. On the machine itself, there are also two settings so you can adjust based on what you are working on.

Additionally, the Magicfly Mini Sewing Machine has a thread cutter. This makes the sewing process go smoother. It also features a light so you can better see the project you are completing.

To equip you with the correct tools, a five-pack of needles, a pair of scissors, and a measurer are included. Further, you will also receive a pack of 36 bobbins and a threader. A manual is also included to make the sewing process easy for those just getting started.

The machine itself uses an AC/DC power supply. You could also use batteries if you choose.

Specifications

  • Good for beginners
  • Two settings for different speeds
Cons
  • Might break easily
  • Hard to sew through thick fabric
  • May be too basic for advanced sewers

Sample Customer Review…I have minimal experience with sewing machines, so I was looking for one that does simple sewing tasks to fix my clothing, hem my skirts, etc. I’m not an avid seamstress of any sort, so I also didn’t want to spend a huge amount of money on a machine that would seldom be used. This machine perfectly matches what I was seeking. It is compact, lightweight, and gives the user options. It comes with a small table to feed the fabric through that folds up and can be stored easily. It has the option of using the machine via AC/DC power supply or can be battery operated using 4 AA batteries (not included). You can run the machine by pressing the power button or use of the included foot pedal. There is a small light on the sewing machine that you also have the option to turn on if needed (see 4th photo). It comes with everything to get you started…a variety of various thread colors with matching colored bobbins already wound, scissors, a thimble, tape measure, stitch ripper, needle threader, extra sewing machine needles, empty bobbins, and a dust bag for the machine when not in use (see 5th photo). All items are of fair quality but go hand-in-hand with the price point. Instructions provided for setup and use are clear and easy to understand. Would highly recommend it for beginners or those looking for a simple machine that only requires basic sewing needs!

Sample Customer Review…I have a Kenmore machine with all the bells and whistles, but there is only one place in the house it will fit and it is not easy to get to for simple repairs or sewing hems. So I hardly ever used it and my mending pile was getting big. Anyway, this little machine sits on a shelf in my bedroom. It is super lightweight so I can just pull it off the shelf, put it on my bed or the coffee table, and sit there to sew, and it is no hassle to chuck it right back on the shelf. It doesn’t do all kinds of complex stitches just straight, zigzag and I think it does buttonholes (but I never tried it.) The point is it is reliable, simple, and basic, but it is for this very reason that I love it. My mending pile is history. Also, I think I will buy one for my niece as this would be a great machine to learn on. Thank you for this cute little machine.

Lastly, the compact size of the machine makes it perfect for storage and traveling

Pros
  • Features compact design

  • Has two speeds
  • Comes with storage
Cons
  • Is not as durable as other options
  • Could be ineffective for complex projects

Sample Customer Review…I purchased this DONYER POWER Portable Mini Electric Sewing Machine to make simple projects like some sachets. I miss the big machine that I gave away several years ago because I did not use it anymore. This adorable little machine does everything I want to do and it comes with everything needed. It has all the things my full-size machine had, including a sewing/threading light, a built-in thread cutter, and a handy storage drawer. (See photos.) I’ve been making “Sweet Dreams” Bunny Sachets and Lavender Rose Sachets for my drawers. I like that this has three different sewing modes; foot pedal, slow, and fast. I have always used the foot pedal for sewing, so that option was a must-have. Although I will likely always use the same stitch, it’s nice that this comes with 12 different built-in stitches and I definitely like the one-year warranty. This is wonderfully lightweight and portable; so easy to carry and easy to use. This is an excellent little machine for a beginner or for anyone. I appreciate that this machine is space-saving and, most importantly, works great for me, not to mention adorable.

The metal pressing foot can be changed out for your sewing needs. The machine can also be used to sew backward. The small size of the BTY sewing machine also makes it easy to take with you.

Specifications

  • Weighs 5.39 pounds
  • Has dimensions of 10.8 x 4.8 x 10.2 inches
  • Made of plastic and metal
  • Is environmentally-friendly
Pros
  • Is environmentally-friendly
  • Has lightweight design
  • Features two speeds
  • Comes with materials such as needles
Cons
  • Made for beginners, not advanced sewers
  • Made of non-durable plastic

Sample Customer Review…I bought this for my 13-year old daughter who wanted to learn to sew. She loves it! It’s small so it’s easy for her to maneuver, but still sturdy, so I feel like, unless she decides to take up sewing masts for ships, there’s not much she couldn’t do on this machine. It’s easy to use but still has that “grown-up” sewing machine feel. It does almost everything my big expensive one does, (I’ve even used it once or twice when I didn’t want to dig out my bigger machine!).

She loves their purple and the fact that they’re accents and not the whole thing purple makes it feel less like a toy to her and made her feel “grown-up”.

The directions were easy to follow and get everything set up for her. The only downside I could find was that it came with black and white thread with matching, pre-wound bobbins, so if she wants to use a different color (such as borrow a color from me) she would either have to completely unwind one of the bobbins or we’d have to go buy her some more. Not a big enough deal to mark this down any stars though. Enjoy!

10. Varmax Portable Sewing Machine

The next product on the list is this portable machine from Varmax. It is a very small machine and features an extendable table. A machine this small is compact and simple to travel with. This machine is also cheaper than some other options as well. This product also has great service after you buy it, and the manufacturer offers a great warranty and insurance.

Specifications

  • Dimensions of 6.9 x 3.5 x 8.6 inches
  • Weight of 2.65 pounds
  • 25-year warranty
  • 12 built-in stitches
Pros
  • Compact design
  • Decent amount of features for price
  • Many different accessories
  • Large sewing table extension
Cons
  • Small design can be a disadvantage for some projects
  • Comes with a lower bobbin

Sample Customer Review…I am a beginner with no experience whatsoever and I loved this. As we all deal with COVID I wanted a sewing machine to make my own masks. I watched a Youtube tutorial for this exact machine and it was so helpful. I was successful in my first sewing project, no issues! The machine already comes with the thread ready to start. I like how it comes with a removable table, sewing accessories, and light. I cannot compare this to any other sewing machine, or speak on the specifications as I am not an expert, but if you need a sewing machine for basic projects I recommend this as it is so easy to use and such a great compact size.

Buying Guide: Things to Consider When Purchasing a Sewing Machine under $100

When shopping for something like a sewing machine, it can come with many questions. To pick the right machine for you, you are going to have to ask yourself what your wants and needs are in the machine.

Do you need to stitch heavy-duty materials? Are you going to keep the machine in your house or is it going to need to be portable? How many different stitches and stitch types do the machine need to come equipped with?

All of these questions come into play, especially if it is your first time getting into sewing.

What comes with buying a $100 sewing machine? You are not purchasing a professional-grade unit, that’s for sure. Some of the best units in the world can cost upwards of $3000 and more.

If you are new to sewing, the most important thing that you are going to want to make sure the machine you buy offers is…

  1. Most basic stitches like the straight and zig-zag stitches. You probably want to consider some decorative stitches as well.
  2. Easy-to-use design, including a stitch dial, foot pressers, etc.
  3. A ton of features and accessories that you can experiment with (for example – needles, bobbins, LED lights, etc)

Projects That Can be Easily Completed With a Machine Under $100

As previously stated, a budget sewing machine like the ones above is not going to be the best option for industrial sewing or working with heavy fabrics. These are a few things that can be easily done with a machine of this caliber.

Hemming shirt sleeves or pants can be easily accomplished with machines like these, so don’t fret about that.

A great beginner project would be to sew together some new throw pillows for the living room.

One of the easiest projects that a machine like this can handle is to make tote bags. This is a way to work on straight and zig-zag stitching.

Conclusion

This list of 10 of the best machines under $100 should be more than enough to make a great decision on a new machine for you or your beginner sewers. We compiled this list full of great options, now it is your turn to make a decision based on your needs, what you want to accomplish, and how you are going to use your new machine. The best option in our opinion is the Brother XM2701. It comes with everything a rookie could ever need and has a good price for what you are going to get out of it. Good luck with your sewing adventures!
