Sample customer review… I never take time to leave reviews, good or bad but after this experience, I knew I had to. Thing is AMAZING. Let me tell you. I am not a camper. Never tried it. Never thought I would. I wanted to do a hike that requires camping overnight so figured, let me get a tent. I was so nervous about all these things, putting things in the ground, a floor mat, this and that. This truck tent is amazing. At about 9:30pm, at the campsite, we opened the box for the first time. Never tried setting it up, so I was SO nervous as it was dark, no lights. This things went from box being opened to light hanging in tent within 30 minutes. It was SO EASY! It was literally three straps on each side of the truck bed and three on the tailgate, three sets of connecting poles that basically snapped into place and up it went. We literally did this in the dark, with an iPhone light and truck bed light within 30 minutes. Thing is huge too. I stood in it, setup the best. Windows were great, let enough air in. Stayed warm if you closed them. I cannot give this tent enough praise.

Quick Notes: Fit in my 2017 Chevy Colorado bed, no problem. With room to spare but didn’t effect the tents performance at all. Perfect weather so didn’t secure rain guide but seemed easy enough. Super easy to figure out placement because side straps are hooks and tailgate is snaps. Best purchase in a long time. Was worried because of how inexpensive it is, don’t be fooled. This is way better than sleeping on the ground!

Even better, it comes with your own foam mattress that can accommodate up to 661 pounds. Not only does this tent include all these amazing add-ons, but it’s extremely easy to set-up and take down. If you want a truly designer tent experience, buy the Smittybilt.

Specifications

  • Occupancy: 2 people
  • Brand: Smittybilt
  • Weight: 48 pounds
  • Material: Polyester
Pros
  • Great quality
  • Comes with a ton of add-ons
  • Easy to set up
Cons
  • Pricey

Sample customer review…Tent arrived quickly and was easy to install. Definitely need two people to get it up there but it came with everything I needed to mount it to my 4runner. Easy set up and take down and the USB light it came with lights up the inside of the tent great at night. I run a small solar battery pack in the tent and works great. It stores my sleeping bags and pillows easily with no real difference in folded dimension. Being a side sleeper I was worried about the mattress but it held up great. No waking up sore like I usually would when camping. Set up and tear down is an easy 5 minute job for one person. Tent stays cool in 80 degree weather and keeps the warmth at night. Our first night out we got hit with about 40 mph winds in the middle of the night but it held up just fine with no tears. Extremely satisfied and considering getting a second to mount to my trailer for the kids.

  • Built-in gear loft

Sample customer review… This tent is super easy to set up following step by step instructions that are sewn right into the bag so there’s no chance of misplacing them. Everything is packed into one bag for easy storage. And I love that it folds back up very easy and fits back into the bag. We ordered the short truck bed version and it fit perfectly. We did put a small square pad on each side on the bed railing in the back because our tonneau cover railing was a bit sharp and we didn’t want the tent to rip at these points. I would highly recommend this truck tent. We love it!

  • Hard to set up
  • Poor air circulation

Sample customer review… I researched truck tents for a few months and hesitated on purchasing the Kodiak, primarily due to the extreme price difference from other tents. After reading so many positive reviews, I researched Kodiak a little further. Finally, I went for it & I am absolutely 100% satisfied I did and so thrilled with the product for several reasons:

– The overall construction quality is top notch.
– The zippers are heavy duty and you can feel it.
– The canvas itself is not skimpy or cheap and thin by any means. It also has that fresh clean canvas smell.
– Fits my 98 Dodge Ram 1500 perfectly.

A friend has a Napier and after having them setup side by side – there is absolutely 100% no comparing the two, he even commented on purchasing one after seeing mine. This tent definitely has a “Mil-spec” feel to it – it reminds me of the canvas Army tent I used to camp in with my Dad when I was a kid.

Side note: The first time setup can be a little daunting; especially if you are setting it up alone. Don’t get discouraged – the second, third, fourth time it gets much much easier. Oh and tear down is a snap.

  • Weight: 8.55 pounds
  • Material: Polyethylene
Pros
  • Very durable
  • Good value for money
  • Water resistant
  • Spacious
  • Lightweight
Cons
  • Only two sizes available

Sample customer review… This seems to be a decent enough tent for the price, there are definitely some cheap aspects to it, but for the occasional camper, I can see the value. It’s a little long for my 5.5’ bed, but it will do just fine. I definitely recommend setting it up before you take it camping, figure out how to set it up because the instructions are vague and you need to find any weak spots. I had two of the pole holders come unstitched when I set it up in my driveway, so I was able to fix them before actually using it. We are going camping in Colorado next week, so I will update this after we get back if there is anything else I can bring to light.

UPDATE: The tent has performed very well, it has good ventilation even with the rain fly on with the windows open, but also retains heat well with them closed. There were the two pockets that came unstitched when I set it up in my driveway, but I have had no more failures. I’m leaving it at 4 stars because of the initial issues, but I still say it’s a great tent for the money.

There are two windows on each side of the tent for ventilation and air flow.

Specifications

  • Occupancy: 2 people
  • Brand: Napier
  • Weight: 1 pound
  • Material: Nylon floor
Pros
  • Weather proof
  • Lots of headspace
  • Straps have protective clothing to prevent scratching truck paint
  • Solid poles
Cons
  • First time set-up is hard
  • Low quality zippers

Sample customer review… I love this tent! I bought this for my 2003 Avalanche Z71. Took me 30 minutes to set it up the first time when it arrived. After that, it took me about ten minutes to set up. I used it at the Oregon Coast in pouring reason and stayed completely dry inside the tent. I never lowered the midgate because I didn’t need the extra room. The tailgate is left down when using the tent which leaves enough room to fit a full size air mattress inside and still have 2 or 3 feet left over. I’m 6’2″ and I had no issues fitting inside.

8. Rightline Gear Truck Tent

The Rightline Gear Truck Tent is a two person tent with a unique floorless design making setup and take down easier without having to remove anything from the bed of your truck. The fabric is water resistant and the seams are very tightly sealed to keep you cozy and dry. To ensure stability and durability, the tent has heavy duty straps and nylon buckles that are high quality so there isn’t damage to your truck. The best part of this tent is the sky view vent – allowing you to stargaze and have better light in your tent. For a quick and easy set up there are color coded poles and pole pockets, which eliminates guessing during setup.

Specifications

  • Occupancy: 2 people
  • Brand: Rightline gear
  • Weight: 8.7 pounds
Pros
  • Stable especially when windy
  • Good ventilation
  • Lightweight
  • Glow-in-the-dark zippers
  • Easier fit for shorter truck beds
  • Removable rainfly
Cons
  • Delicate zippers
  • Straps have potential to scratch the paint of your car
  • Not much headroom, cramped

Sample customer review… This tent is easy to set up, easy to take down, packs down small enough and is very waterproof. We use it year round… Plan on using it in May during an Oregon/California coastal road trip from BC. I highly recommend this tent. Rightline gear seems to be very engaged with their customers online as well which is nice to see. I guess the only downside is that this tent has no bottom. We usually have a small broom with us and quickly give the bed a sweep before set up. If its wet out we throw down a small tarp. I did have one occasion where the tent wasn’t set up tight enough and because it has no bottom the mosquitos found their way in the gaps. The mosquitos were VERY bad at that location though and I have never had any bugs come in any other time. Solid purchase! Our camping friends have all converted to truck bed tents because of ours, hehehe. I also prefered the color scheme to some of the other truck bed tents out there but that’s just me.

Update! Still love this tent. I have a new truck new and I repurchased this tent in a smaller size so I could use it with the new vehicle. Rightline’s customer service has proved to be excellent as well. I received the second tent I purchased from amazon nut when it arrived it was missing the rain fly. As I am a canadian purchasing from amazon.com (not .ca) and picking up my items from a parcel place across the line returning the tent to amazon was a costly hassel. After contacting rightline and providing proof of purchase they promptly sent me a replacement rain fly. I am a huge advocate for rightline gear. Gwt one of these tents. You wont regret it.

9. Milliard Truck Tent

The Milliard Truck Tent is made of strong and durable material and has superior ripstop grade material. It’s a two person tent with a mesh door and windows. The doors and windows come with privacy features in order to sleep in peace and enjoy yourself. The sewn in floor keeps you from sleeping in dirt and mud. The tent is a six and a half foot bed length for you to sleep in comfortably. The tent has a lantern hook as well as a storage pocket for good lights and keeping important accessories off the group and safe.

Specifications

  • Occupancy:  2 people
  • Brand: Milliard
  • Weight: 15.7 pounds
Pros
  • Easy setup
  • No exposed areas
  • Lots of standing room
Cons
  • Ventilation is mid-tier
  • Poles are low quality so not very durable

Sample customer review…I needed an affordable truck tent to travel to visit my family. This worked perfectly. The fabric is plenty tough enough and it fit very well even though I didn’t remove my Tonneau cover. Easy to assemble and break-down but I did need assistance getting the rods into the pockets – two pair of hands helps a lot! I put in a twin size air mattress and a 3 inch foam topper and slept like a baby. It did not rain on my trip so I can’t speak about performance in the bad weather, but the construction makes me believe that it would handle this well. I really like being up off the ground!

Sample customer review…I’ve not been a tent camper for many years. My family trail ride with our horses but only have a two horse trailer, no hauling room a camper. At first it was hard to set up but it gets easier with practice. We’ve now camped with our truck bed tent even in 40° nights with a heater. The tent was awesome. It held the heat, even our 3yr old never got cold. Holds the blow up mattress and still has plenty of room to keep all of our clothes, phone, heater or fan even a mobile a/c. And more. Love our bed tent. Now we keep the tent in the truck and we can up and go, to ride and camp when ever we want and don’t have to try to get a second truck to haul the camper. So glad I bought it.

Buying Guide: Things to Consider When Purchasing The Best Truck Tents for Camping

There are many features to consider when purchasing a truck tent. Before all, make sure that this tent is compatible for your specific truck and needs. If it is, consider these features below to make your way to your greatest purchase ever!

Size

Some tents are tall enough so that you can stand inside of it rather than crouch, whereas smaller tents have the advantage of being lighter and more portable. If you’re going camping with a larger group of people, you might want to opt for a larger sized tent.

Ease of setup

One of the most important features is how easy the tent is to set up and how convenient it is for the customer. Camping is complicated enough, your tent shouldn’t add to these complications. You should be able to get it set up in less than ten minutes and enjoy the rest of your trip.

Ventilation

The circulation in general and mesh windows are important in order to make sure that you don’t feel suffocated and too hot. You should make sure that the tent that you choose includes these features in order to make your stay more comfortable

Weather durability

Coupled with a good ventilation system, you need to make sure that your tent has good insulation if you’re camping in colder weather. These two features together will make your tent perfect for year-long camping. You also need to make sure that you have some sort of wind protection so that your tent doesn’t fly away if faced with any wind. Furthemore, your tent should be waterproof in case of rain. If your tent has all of these qualities, you will be safe to camp in any sort of weather conditions.

Flooring

Some tents have a built-in floor, which is good in case you don’t want to sleep on the bed of your trunk, and makes the overall experience more comfortable. It also protects you from the outside. However the floor has to be flat so you have to make sure that your tent is not filled with too many items/is not too cramped. If it is, a floor could make your tent seem smaller.

Storage

Some tents include pockets on the sides which is useful so that you can store any extra material you have that you can’t fit in your trunk.

Conclusion

The best truck tents for camping have many useful features that can make traveling and camping ten times easier. The products listed above are sure to provide you with maximum space so you can sleep comfortably and store all of your belongings. You won’t have to worry about ventilation either as many truck tents have mesh windows. If you’re an avid traveler and love your truck, purchasing a truck tent can be a wonderful investment.
