Sample Customer Review… I purchased this sewing machine with the intent of learning to sew in my spare time. There was a very comprehensive how-to video on the web which made this machine look very easy to use. After two additional recommendations from friends and family who use Janome machines and love them, I purchased mine. It arrived quickly as advertised and came with all of the pieces nicely packed for shipment. I literally took it out of the box, followed the instructions on how to thread it and started sewing a practice piece of fabric immediately. I’ve used it a few times for small projects that I would normally have hand-sewn and it’s worked very well (plus has saved me a ton of time!) I’m also using it to sew medium-sized silk lavender sachets for gifts and it couldn’t be easier. This particular model comes with a few decorative stitches which have worked out nicely. One bit of advice… Go with a model a little above what you think you want. I was waffling between this model (Magnolia) and another model with half the stitch options and I’m so happy I spent an extra few bucks and got the extra stitches. Happy sewing!!

Janome Magnolia 7318: Notable Pros and Cons

Pros

Jam resistant bobbin

With its jam-resistant bobbin, the Janome Magnolia 7318 is an efficient model as it guarantees fewer interruptions in the middle of a project. This is an important feature to have as many mechanical sewing machines experience issues with jams that interrupt projects, requiring time for maintenance to get the machine running smoothly again.

Easy transport

With a bigger size and heavier weight, this machine is by no means easy to move around on its own. What makes this easy to transport is the built-in carrying handle. As it only weighs 17 pounds, having a handle helps with moving this type from place to place with ease.

Heavy Duty

This is the feature that makes the Janome Magnolia 7318 shine. Many mechanical types tend to have issues due to speed which prevents them from working through thicker materials. Working with “heavy-duty” materials is vital because repairs on the denim in jeans and big canvas bags are everyday uses.

This model doesn’t suffer from this issue as it has the necessary speeds to handle multiple layers of thick materials, making repairs, and home design projects easy. This feature allows one complete freedom with project material, increasing the range of possibilities. Do note that multiple layers of heavy-duty materials can strain even the best machine types so proceed with caution.

Free-arm capability

Not all machines are built with this feature which makes working on specific tasks more difficult than they need to be. However, this model can adjust to allow free-arm capability, allowing one to work on more difficult tasks like cuffs and sleeves.

Bonus Bundle

This model, when purchased with the bonus bundle, comes with a variety of accessories that make this investment more worthy. It comes with a muffling mat which reduces noise during operation, 10 bobbins, and 5 needles. Most models usually come with 3 bobbins and usually don’t include a muffling mat which adds to its value.

2 Year Warranty

This is a very durable model but even the best machines can have problems, stemming from overuse to mishandling. To alleviate concerns, this model comes with a 2-year warranty to address any immediate problems that may arise.

Great for beginners

The collective features made for the ease of use as well as the functional features that broaden one’s options are what make this model excellent for those exploring sewing as a hobby or for common repairs. Many cheaper models boast a wide array of built-in stitches but lack the ability to consistently sew through thick layers of heavy material.

The Janome Magnolia 7318 has 18 built-in stitches and can do just that, allowing a greater range of freedom with options as the other stitches different machines have can easily be copied with practice.

Cons

Cost

A major flaw with this brand is not in its functionality but in its pricing. Naturally, a foreign model will incur greater costs but it is understandable when some are less willing to invest so much. However, the price does pale in comparison to the various benefits one can have with such a model.

It is among the more expensive models but it is important to know it comes in exchange for the freedom of choice with both stitches and material options, making this model much more versatile than machines that can only handle thinner fabrics. The current deal also comes with various benefits such as the bundle of accessories that alleviate some of the costs to make this a more worthy purchase.

For U.S. use only

This model is a 110-volt machine and is intended for use in the U.S. only. There are various workarounds to this but it is something to keep in mind.

Conclusion

The Janome Magnolia 7318 boasts a greater range of options, making it suitable for many people. It provides a decent number of stitches but can easily match that of other models as it can adjust to suit one’s needs. Through practice, one can find that this model will suit your everyday needs and proves to be a fun learning experience. In addition, it’s able to work with many types of materials so you don’t have to feel so restricted. Some machines are only able to work with thin fabrics which, while functional, limits the user from other important repairs like jeans which can get ripped often.

Overall, this model has few functional drawbacks. It comes with a limited 2-year warranty, has great durability, and has all you could ever need to handle any project you may need to handle in the future. The only real drawback lies in its pricing which, since it is a foreign model, is very understandable. However, if you’re looking to make an investment in a heavy-duty mechanical sewing machine with great reliability, the Janome Magnolia 7318 may be what you’re looking for. The price may be a bit higher than other models but you will be able to have a complete experience as you work with various projects that you could never do on other machines.
