1. Camco (41541) Portable Travel Toilet

If you want to go to the toilet just like you do at home, but when you’re camping, then this is the toilet for you. Unlike most of the toilets on this list, this Camco gem allows you to flush your waste away just like a regular toilet. All of this whilst sealing the awful odors and leakage inside of the piece. The design of this thing is just awesome, with the secure side latch you can dispose of everything easily, without a collection of parts. If you’re looking for a proper toilet, this is your winner. With excellent ease of use, price, portability, and great odor retention. A must-buy.

Specifications

  • Weight – 10.8 lbs
  • Capacity 5.3 gallons
  • Dimensions 15.5 inch H x 14 inch W x 16 inch
Pros
  • Affordable
  • Sealing valve
  • Side latches
  • Manual flush
Cons
  • No ventilation

Sample Customer Review… I love my portable toilet!!! Just went camping and used my new Shower/Utility Tent and portable toilet. It was fantastic. I didn’t have to share with anyone…camped alone…and I didn’t have to worry about bugs or dirtiness. It was wonderful. If you are thinking about buying a portable throne…then you want this one. It is so easy to use. Fill the top part with water for cleansing flush and it lasts all week. To empty the bottom part, just detach the top and take it to a bathroom and pour and flush down the toilet. It is a must for tent camping.

2. Camco Portable Toilet Bucket

Staying true to itself, the Camco’s portable toilet is truly portable, very lightweight, and can support a lot of weight.

The smooth interior design of the bucket allows easy cleaning without the need for extra scrubbing, as we all know this is the worst part. As camping is a family occasion, you don’t want to bring numerous buckets for all the family. Camco’s product allows for enough capacity for the entire family to use without change.

I’m guessing you’ll be outside at some point on your trip. This is why the seat is made of durable, UV-resistant polypropylene, meaning it won’t fade from sunlight, staying looking new.

Specifications

  • Weight – 4 lbs
  • Supported weight – 300 lbs
  • Height 16 in
  • Capacity 5 gallons
Pros
  • Lightweight
  • Seals tightly
  • Durable
  • UV Resistant
Cons
  • Bags sold separately
  • Not designed for males
  • Seals too tightly, may require tools

Sample Customer Review… I bought this to save us from middle-of-the-night bathroom trips in the deep, dark woods. We’ve used it on a few camping trips and it served its purpose well. The seat accommodates kids as well as plus-sized adults. It is pretty sturdy – it hasn’t yet been knocked over so can’t say what would happen if it did. I kept it in a corner of the tent. I will say that we have only used it for pee and only at night – so we didn’t use it full time as we had outside bathrooms. For these purposes, one of the bags that was included lasted two of us for 2 nights – would’ve needed another bag for a 3rd. The bags are nice because they have a double-seal so there wasn’t really a way for me to spill the contents. Also the material inside prevented odors w/in our tent. And… if it matters to anyone.. it was pretty quiet due to the material in the bag so all of the other campers couldn’t hear us peeing in the middle of the night. Overall I’m really happy with this purchase and do recommend it.

3. Porta Potti 550

The award-winning product functions are just as good as it looks, very modern. Its Battery-powered flush technique provides a very strong water flow, flushing waste and cleaning the bowl. Also, the carrying handle is easy for lifting, and with the integrated paper holder it’s perfect.

Specifications

  • Weight – 13.45 pounds
  • Dimensions – 18 x 18 x 16 in inches
Pros
  • Sealed
  • Capacity
  • Rotating spout
  • Battery powered flush
  • Integrated paper holders
Cons
  • Cannot flush without batteries

Sample Customer Review… I have to say that the Fiamma I had was good, but this Thetford Curve is better. First, it stands taller than my Fiamma and the Thetford feels like a real toilet. It looks much better with the smooth lines and curve, which is nice for when company comes over and they don’t have to encounter a square clunker-looking toilet and the uptight people will feel more comfortable sitting on the Thetford Curve. The automatic flush is great. It does the job and does not spray up on the toilet seat like t Fiamma’s manual flush would do. I am an overweight person and I am comfortable on this toilet. This toilet feels sturdy. I wouldn’t sit on the lid (even if I was skinny) because it really isn’t made to be sat on.

4. Thetford Corp Porta Potti 345

The Porta Potti is a great find for those who want a flushable portable toilet with minimal caveats. The fantastic piston pump flushing system can jet the bowl clean. As it is pre-assembled, it is one of the easiest to use. With Thetford, you can trust the brand that it will do the job.

Specifications

  • Weight – 10.12 pounds
  • Dimensions – 15.36 x 17.13 x 13.27 inches
Pros
  • Comfortable
  • Durable and sturdy
  • One unit
  • High capacity
  • Spout swings out
Cons
  • Leaks from weak points over time

Sample Customer Review… Very nice and compact. We carry it as an emergency toilet in a truck camper. Seals well and doesn’t smell even after several “loads” and several days. We do go out of our way to keep urine out of it to be sure the smell stays away. The seat could be bigger but then it wouldn’t store away as nicely as it does. Overall, a good compromise between size and utility. Emptying it is not all that much fun, but it works and I guess that is all you can ask for. Definitely better than the 5-gallon bucket with a plastic bag and toilet seat and in our camper are stores better too, plus no worry about turning it over.

5. Basicwise Portable Travel Toilet

The Basicwise travel toilet is not only very good for its function, but also adds some style to a toilet. It includes a removable pail positioned underneath the toilet allowing you to bring some hominess with you when you’re in the country.

This toilet is great for big groups, as the capacity of 4-8 gallons for the waste bags allows for heavy use without change. Although they must be bought separately, the toilet parts are all very lightweight which allows them to be transported very easily.

This product can also be double up as a normal seat, both for small children and adults, making it very versatile.

Specifications

  • Weight – 5.5 lbs
  • Supported weight – 250 lbs
  • Height – 14 in
  • Capacity – 8 gallons
Pros
  • Integrated paper holder
  • Removable waste bucket
  • Usable as seat
  • Wide base
Cons
  • Not sturdy
  • Bags separate
  • Made of plastic can break

Sample Customer Review… I got this portable because my fiancé is a wheelchair user and my basement is the only accessible entrance and doesn’t have a bathroom. When she comes over she uses it and so do I. It is convenient and very sturdy. At first, when I got it I thought this is going to fall over but it has sturdy material. Honestly, the cover they give you for this toilet does keep the smell out. The smell and orders aren’t very strong when the pail cover is on and also using scented trash bags helps. I was able to fit this toilet in my basement closet with a shower chair next to it. It’s easy to carry and very lightweight.

6. Reliance Products Luggable Loo Portable

With all of the hydration and sanitizing products that Reliance Products make, it’s not surprising how reliable this product is. The design doesn’t give it the kudos it needs, as you may think it’s a regular bucket, but trust me it’s much more.

The Luggable Loo is the perfect bucket-type toilet for all aspects of camping. With its reasonably wide base, there is no chance that it won’t fall over or slowly sink into the mud.

Specifications

  • Weight – 3 lbs
  • Supported weight – 300 lbs
  • Height – 15.56 in
  • Capacity – 5 gallons
Pros
  • Affordable
  • Metal handle portability
  • Easy to clean
  • Snap on lid
Cons
  • Lid does not close securely
  • Made of plastic
  • Cannot waft odors
  • Too small for most

Sample Customer Review… I can’t believe how much I love this thing! It’s just a tad low for me at 5’1”, but that isn’t really a problem, and I find it remarkably comfortable. I have a lowered floor wheelchair van, so it’s really easy to use it inside, and if I need privacy, I just put on a standard rain poncho. I bought it for a car camping trip to New York, wanting to avoid going into stores to use the facilities during COVID as much as possible. It was perfect, so much so that I have kept it in the van for daily use. I find the lid very secure, to the point of actually being somewhat difficult to remove.

7. Reliance Products Hassock Portable Toilet

Something that camping toilets often look past to lose weight is a comfortable seat. With its great design, the Hassock has found a loophole in this, providing a comfortable seat whilst weighing just 5 lbs. Through detaching the seat you can empty the contents of the bucket. To handle the smell it provides an eco fresh packet, as well as the toilet roll holder.

Specifications

  • Weight – 5 lbs
  • Dimensions 14.7 by 14.7 by 14 inches
Pros
  • Removable bucket
  • Seat contours
  • Toilet paper holder
  • Splash cover
  • Lightweight
Cons
  • Seat is flimsy

Sample Customer Review… We used their portable loo (that fits on a 5-gallon bucket) for many moons for camping and on job-sites, etc.- GREAT- no odor, comfy, etc. I thought I’d try this for something that looks a little nicer, less bathroom-like, and lower-profile, that could double as a seat in my travel trailer. My main concern of course was odor control, and I’m happy to say that NO odors escape from this. I don’t see the point of the plastic insert for TP, more trouble than it’s worth, so I discarded it. The inner toilet seat is rounded and more comfortable than the one on the portable loo- SUPER comfortable. And the outer lid is comfy too, for extra seating in the tiny bedroom/bath, for putting on one’s shoes or whatever. It’s not as tall as the portable loo though, so if knees or whatever are an issue for sitting down onto something so low you may want to either have a grab/grip bar affixed to the wall next to it (they make good ones that affix with suction cups I’ve heard) or put it on a small platform of some sort. Otherwise- highly recommended.

8. Reliance Products Fold-to-Go Collapsible Portable Toilet

This product by Reliance is the real deal for outdoor camping. Whether you’re someone who likes to dig a hole in the ground or feel like you’re more at home, this toilet is perfect for both. With its attachable bags (included) you can quickly dispose of your waste. Reliance has thought about the biggest problem in camping, fitting everything in a carry-able bag. This is why the legs fold up, and there is no need for extra cleaning equipment.

Specifications

  • Weight – 4.5 lbs
  • Supported weight 300 lbs
  • Capacity 5.3 gallons
  • Dimensions 14.5”x14.5″x14.5″
Pros
  • Lightweight and compact
  • Affordable
  • Comes with bag
  • Sturdy leg locking
Cons
  • Short stature
  • Leg locking is hard

Sample Customer Review… We used this over a four-day family camping trip and it worked great at what it was supposed to do. I was worried that it would be unsteady or that it would be gross to pack up when it was time, but the design lets you keep things pretty contained and away from your hands. It feels very sturdy once everything is locked into place. The lid kept things pretty airtight so smells were no issue and it didn’t appear to attract any animals. We used the recommended bags and we were surprised how long a bag lasted for us. I’d buy this again for the intended purpose.

9. Alpcour Portable Toilet

The Alpcour Portable Toilet may be one of the more comfy toilets on this list, as it reaches 16.5 inches, and the seat is 14.4 by 16.3 inches wide. Other than its height and seat width it has a couple of great features! This toilet has two compartments, one for waste and one for water. The waste compartment is 5.3 gallons and the water compartment is 3.2 gallons. Both latch together firmly and can handle at least 50 flushes. Even coming with a nonbattery-powered flushing mechanism that does a 360 spray and flush of the bowl. Making clean-up easy as can be and with such a large capacity, emptying out is infrequent.

It is a durable 11-pound luxury portable toilet that can hold up to 440 pounds in weight. If you’re looking for a durable toilet to take your mind off the rugged outdoors, this toilet is right for you, as it is filled with these features to make it more convenient, this should be a considered option for any outdoors trip!

Specifications

  • Weight – 11 Pounds
  • Supported Weight – 440 Pounds
  • Capacity – 5.3 Gallons
Pros
  • Comfortable Height
  • 360 Spray and Flush System
  • Does Not Require Batteries
  • Easy Clean-Up
  • Durable Build
  • Carry Bag
Cons
  • Expensive When Compared
  • Uncomfortable For Men
  • Waste Cleaning May Need More Water

Sample Customer Review…I purchased this Alpcour Portable Toilet for my little Chalet camper for several reasons. First was the height. It is perfect! No more almost falling to the floor due to the low height of my old one. It’s also very stable. I liked the idea of the piston-type flusher vs the bellows on my old one. The bellows, being made of plastic eventually broke off on the old one. The other thing I really like is the spout for emptying it, so much easier and less chance of splashing. Although I did not hook up the hose for rinsing the bowl on my first trip out with it I like the idea and will try it next time. I did think the price was a bit high, however, after using it I find it is worth every penny, and with Prime shipping, it came the next day! Others I looked at would have taken 2 weeks! Thanks for a great product!

10. Nature’s Head Portable Composting Toilet

A new innovation of a toilet that composts the waste which means it does not need a compartment for waste. With new benefits such as not having to maintain it often and the fact, it is odor-free. A unique feature of this toilet is that the odor diminishes the longer it isn’t emptied out. This is due to the composting compartment that separates the solids and liquids. With only 4 gallons, it can be used up to 80 times due to the composition while also being able to easily clean up. It is a durable yet expensive toilet when compared to others, however, if odor bothers you a lot and if you are an environmentally friendly person then this would be a great choice for your next camping trip!

Specifications

  • Weight – 28 Pounds
  • Supported Weight: 300 Pounds
  • Capacity – 4 Gallons
Pros
  • Odorless Over Time
  • Maintenance Free
  • Environmentally Friendly
  • Steel Made Durable
Cons
  • Very Expensive
  • Heavyweight
  • Mold Can Grow
  • Liquid Tank Needs Constant Removal

Sample Customer Review…We use this as an extra bathroom in our 1 bathhouse. Saved $5-6,000 installing plumbing for a 2nd bathroom. Very little maintenance required. When we go boating, I just unsnap it from the floor and put it on the patio boat. Way easier than the old “port-a-potty” that has to be emptied and cleaned each trip. When we get back home, just carry it back in the house, snap it to the floor and continue using it. There is absolutely no smell, and the compost can be used in the flower bed. I put a little RV toilet treatment in the urine bottle, so there is no smell there.

Buying Guide: Things to Consider Before Purchasing The Best Camping Toilet

When camping there are a few factors that will make the trip much more enjoyable, a light bag, great weather, and a place to do your business. When selecting your toilet you also need to take a few factors into consideration. We’ve compiled a small list of what we feel are the most important elements to choose for your toilet.

Transportability

Not only light but you want it to be somewhat transportable. Can it fit in your car/ in a bag? These are all big points when traveling.

Capacity

Now, this is a choice you have to make. Since if you are only going for a weekend on your own, unless you’re eating Indian Food all weekend, then you probably don’t need that much storage. But if you’re with your family then you may need to consider this.

Comfort

Everyone likes to relax on the toilet. The last thing you want is a seat too small so you’re basically stood up, or a seat too big so you’re falling inside. Choosing a seat that is adaptable for different sizes is a big factor.

Odor Concealing

I’m yet to meet a person that loves the smell of a toilet. If you are one of those people, you don’t need to consider this, if not then you probably want a toilet that doesn’t smell like one. Our list of toilets does a great job of keeping that smell inside so you don’t have to deal with it.

Conclusion

The list we’ve compiled comes from the many years of experience we have had sitting on the toilet. When you’re camping you want these same factors. The list ranges from different strengths so we’re sure that you’ve found one that fits you/ your family’s needs.
