1. Death Wish Coffee

If you are looking for a bean to put a pep in your step, Death Wish Coffee will do that and more. This brand is notorious for its high caffeine content, but that doesn’t even compare to the coffee’s great flavor which is rich with hints of dark chocolate and cherry! While the price is not for everyone, if you truly care about the boost you get from your morning cup, this coffee is your best bet, and it is what makes it our top pick for the best coffee beans!

Specifications:

  • Brand: Death Wish Coffee Co.
  • Item Form: Whole Bean
  • Roast Level: Dark Roast
  • Flavor: Chocolate
  • Caffeine Content: Caffeinated
Pros
  • Low acidity
  • High caffeine content
  • Rich flavor
  • Available in multiple forms
Cons
  • Expensive
  • Caffeine content might be too much for some

Sample Customer Review… I’ve never written a review on anything I’ve purchased on Amazon, but this is so deserving of my time to sit and do this. I will try not to babble on too much. First, this is the smoothest cup of coffee I have ever had. Pot after pot – bag after bag. I waited until I had purchased several bags to test the consistency from the first bag to the last bag I’ve had. Side note – the bags are still coming. Thank you, Amazon for ‘Subscribe and Save’. I have always wanted to be able to just enjoy a cup of black coffee and go. This product is so incredibly smooth and great tasting that is exactly what I’m able to do now, enjoy it. Another thing I’ll mention that most people don’t, your tummy. Most of the time when you hear about an extra potent cup of coffee, people think of their tummies. This is such a smooth blended product – there was no difference between drinking this versus an average coffee. It isn’t like the harshness of drinking an energy drink. I’ve been a coffee drinker since 1987 and it’s nice to actually be able to enjoy a rich cup of coffee that really kicks me in gear too. It’s no comparison to drinking an energy drink that makes you all jittery. It’s just this nice energetic and still able to concentrate buzz. I even put this to the test with some folks in my office. They all said the same thing – it gives you that good even tone of feeling wide awake yet you’re still able to do what you need to do. Whether it’s running around the office or actually sitting at the computer. I am a customer for life. You guys make the best coffee hands down. I even expanded out to enjoy some of your other flavors. But this is my favorite of all.

2. Stone Street Coffee Cold Brew Reserve

If you have been an avid cold brew advocate, then we could not recommend a better bean for your cold brewing needs! Stone Street’s Cold Brew reserve is a rich dark roast with an intricate chocolaty flavor, and while it might not be as high in caffeine as some of our other picks, it is full of antioxidants and is less acidic than your regular brew.

Specifications:

  • Brand: Stone Street Coffee
  • Item Form: Ground
  • Roast Level: Dark Roast
  • Flavor: Whole Bean
  • Caffeine Content: Caffeinated
Pros
  • Cold-brew specific
  • Variety of size options
  • Great flavor
Cons
  • Price varies
  • No instructions

Sample Customer Review… I make a lot of cold brews so hand-grinding out a pound every 3-4 days gets tiresome and at the price of super freshly roasted beans locally, it’s also stupid expensive to buy for a brew method that is so very flexible (I’ve gotten pretty good cold brew out of super old beans before) that getting it pre-ground is just easier, more affordable, and still can taste wonderful. Stone Street is top-notch IMO, it’s rich, smooth, and very strong just as I like it. The grind is also VERY consistent so if you’re using a metal mesh filter or a cheaper straining bag, you’re not going to get many fines with this. I make a concentrate to really stretch how many cups I can get out of a batch, so I use the entire pound per about 5-6 quarts of water and let it brew for 36-48 hours. It’s fabulous, I cut it about halfway with either water (if I want it plain) or half-and-half (I want a creamier drink) and I’ve got enough caffeine to get me through an entire day of school and work. I’d estimate that I get about 11-12 total cups out of my full batch, but I do use larger 18oz cups since I drink a lot so for those that drink smaller amounts you’ll get a lot more servings if you go the cold brew concentrate route. UPDATE: I’ve burned through 2 bags of this now and I’m hooked for sure. Buying really fresh beans is my preference but it’s really hard to do that in my city much less for anywhere near affordable in large quantities. This hits my affordable AND easy AND great tasting criteria.

3. Lavazza Super Crema Espresso

One of the only espresso options we have on this list, but this ranking should not be viewed lightly! Lavazza’s Super Crema Espresso is an affordable buy that brings notes of almond, honey and dried fruit with that extraordinary jolt of caffeine. This medium roast would blend wonderfully in a decadent almond milk latte, or any espresso driven creation you could come up with!

Specifications:

  • Brand: Lavazza
  • Item Form: Whole Bean
  • Roast Level: Medium Roast
  • Flavor: Super Crema
  • Caffeine Content: Caffeinated
Pros
  • Great flavor
  • Affordable
  • Goes well with drip
Cons
  • Beans can be stale
  • Available only in 2.2 lb bags

Sample Customer Review… Very good beans. I just received mine and began to make espresso with my Flair espresso maker. My bag is 2 months after the roast date. Yes, that means the beans are not fresh. But guess what? You can’t tell. Fine-ish grind, 7.5g in, 25g out in 30 seconds, just like the bag says, and it is one of the most delicious espressos I’ve had. I like milk drinks, but this I can have without any additives. Nada. Compared to shots you sometimes get at coffee shops, it wasn’t bitter, wasn’t acidic. Just very aromatic strong black coffee with lots of caramel-brown crema on top. I guess I got lucky and accidentally got it dialed in after my 2nd try. I like bright 3rd wave roasts, but this was earthy, hazelnutty, and very mellow Italian because of the presence of decent Robusta. I don’t think it is a coffee that “blow your mind,” (if you’re a 3rd wave hipster who’s into that sort of thing) but it is a solid and very pleasant coffee for espresso, or any other type of coffee really.

4. Valhalla Java (Whole Bean) Coffee

Like it’s predecessor, Death Wish Coffee’s Valhalla Java flavor comes packed with caffeine and an exceptionally rich taste. This chocolaty blend has notes of nuttiness and is complete with a sweet and smooth finish. This coffee is not called the “Odinforce Blend” for no reason, however, the incredible amounts of caffeine will give you the energy that the Norse Gods themselves would be envious of!

Specifications:

  • Brand: Death Wish Coffee
  • Item Form: Whole Bean
  • Flavor: Dark Roast Coffee
  • Caffeine Content: Caffeinated
  • Organic
Pros
  • High caffeine content
  • Rich flavor
Cons
  • Expensive
  • Caffeine content might be too much for some

Sample Customer Review… This is the best coffee you will ever drink. The smell is so intense and wonderful you will think you died and went to heaven. When you open the bag the smell takes you away. I recommend getting the whole bean and grinding them yourself, do not be a lazy pile. The smell and freshness from fresh ground beans are so much better. The mouth flavor is like nothing I have ever had in coffee. We used the beans in the french press and it was amazing. The dark intense color and rich flavors of smoke and coco were great. I am hooked and will be getting this from here on out.

5. Bulletproof The Original Whole Bean Coffee

For those of you who prefer a medium roast, and would like a Keto-friendly coffee option, Bulletproof The Original Whole Bean Coffee is the brew for you! Keeping up with Keto is hard enough with all of the charts and nutritional information that you have to memorize to make it through the day, why not try a coffee that you know will get you going in the morning, and not have you losing sleep at night wondering whether or not the carbs will count against you? If you are keeping with Keto, Bulletproof is highly recommended.

Specifications:

  • Brand: Bulletproof
  • Item Form: Whole Bean
  • Roast Level: Medium Roast
  • Flavor: Original Whole Bean 12oz
  • Caffeine Content: Caffeinated
Pros
  • Keto-friendly
  • Great taste
  • Rainforest Alliance certified
Cons
  • Higher fat content (for those not on Keto diet)

Sample Customer Review… It took 65 years for me to actually drink coffee. And after reading the book Bulletproof Diet, I’m SO glad it did. Bulletproof coffee is so delicious and gives me energy for the whole day. Knowing I’m drinking mold-free coffee makes me feel better too – seriously feel better. I tried another brand to start with and it was making me nauseous. I thought it was because I had never drunk coffee before, but decided to try Bulletproof since I was following the Bulletproof Diet. It didn’t bother me at all. And to be sure it wasn’t my imagination, I drank the other one again. The same thing happened. So I’ve been drinking Bulletproof coffee ever since, and I don’t think I’ll switch. Why change something when it’s good for you, delicious, and working! I love the diet too. I’ve never felt so good. I recommend it to everyone!!

6. Real Good Coffee Co. Certified Organic Whole Bean Coffee

Looking to buy a satisfying cup of coffee in bulk? Well Real Good Coffee Co USDA Certified Organic Dark Roast Whole Bean Coffee, is just what you’re looking for! If the name isn’t enough to attest to the quality of these beans, then let the notes of cedar, lemon, and bell pepper speak for themselves, and enjoy that classic and dependable morning cup that you can wrap your fingers around and inhale that alluring warm aroma.

Specifications:

  • Brand: Real Good Coffee Company
  • Item Form: Whole Bean
  • Roast Level: Dark Roast
  • Flavor: Organic Dark
  • Caffeine Content: Caffeinated
Pros
  • Affordable
  • Sold in bulk
  • Organic
Cons
  • No size options

Sample Customer Review… Where has this been all of my life?!?! I love coffee but am not really into bitter coffee, which most places make. I read about how some Scandinavian countries enjoy light roast coffee and drink it straight with nothing added. I bought this one to try and I can confirm that it is a light roast and you can drink it straight from the cup with nothing added to it and it both smooth and light. I have added some cream to try it out but it doesn’t need it. I’ve also added one sugar pack and that also contributes to a light sweetness without altering the coffee flavor. This is a fantastic product if you enjoy a lighter blend that isn’t as bitter as a politician scorned. I’m a lifelong buyer now.

7. Koffee Kult Thunder Bolt Dark Roast

Koffee Kult Thunder Bolt Dark Roast is a coffee that comes with a taste just as powerful as the name would lead you to believe, carrying an earthy flavor with a smoky sweet aftertaste. This French roast coffee is perfect for a french press, but even your traditional drip brewer would do these beans justice, and the aroma alone is worth every penny!

Specifications:

  • Brand: Koffee Kult
  • Item Form: Whole Bean
  • Roast Level: Dark Roast
  • Flavor: Whole Bean
  • Caffeine Content: Caffeinated
Pros
  • Many size options
  • French roast taste
Cons
  • Hard to find in-store
  • Expensive

Sample Customer Review… Thunder Bolt blend is my favorite roast from them by far. You will not be disappointed. It brews a very smooth cup of coffee that makes waking up in the morning a breeze. I will be recommending Thunder Bolt coffee to my friends. Koffee Kult coffee is by far one of the best companies to get your coffee from. I have purchased multiple roasts from them over the past year and every one exceeds my expectations. They are very responsive and even send along a brewing guide to ensure you get the most out of your beans.

8. Four Sigmatic Mushroom Ground Coffee, Lion’s Mane

While you may have seen coffee in all shapes and sizes, what makes the Four Sigmatic Mushroom Ground Coffee unique, is exactly what’s in the name. This peculiar blend of coffee incorporates mushroom powder into the final product, giving the coffee, not only a unique flavor, but the ability to, according to some reports, strengthen your immune system! It is the perfect coffee for those that dread those February sniffles, or who simply love mushrooms and wants nothing more than to incorporate them into their morning coffee.

Specifications:

  • Brand: Four Sigmatic
  • Item Form: Ground
  • Roast Level: Dark Roast
  • Flavor: Lion’s Mane
  • Caffeine Content: Caffeinated
Pros
  • Reportedly helps immune health
  • Unique flavor
Cons
  • Less caffeine than some other brands

Sample Customer Review… This coffee with Lion’s Mane and Chaga mushroom extracts has changed my morning routine forever. I gave up coffee about 6 months ago as it was not agreeing with my stomach–often causing indigestion–and was leaving me crashing in the early afternoon. Soon after I discovered Four Sigmatic’s instant coffee blend that gave me ZERO negative side effects and had me energized without jitters or stomach issues throughout the whole day. Now they have true ground coffee which makes the experience that much more wonderful! I can finally whip out my french press again! I am obsessed with this stuff. It tastes great and offers some wonderful healing benefits. Could you ask for more!?

9. Kicking Horse Kick Ass

Kicking Horse’s Kick Ass is a dark roast coffee with a strong flavor with hints of chocolate, licorice, and rich molasses, and a perfect companion to a french press or cold brew. This coffee is wildly available despite its small origins, and is the perfect addition to your morning routine.

Specifications:

  • Brand: Kicking Horse Coffee
  • Item Form: Whole Bean
  • Roast Level: Dark Roast
  • Flavor: Kick Ass – Dark Roast
  • Caffeine Content: Caffeinated
Pros
  • Great flavor profile
  • Widely accessible
Cons
  • No 12oz bag
  • Only one light roast flavor

Sample Customer Review… Best Coffee Ever! I’m always hesitant even if a product has great reviews so I tried it out myself. I got the “Kicking Horse Coffee, Kick Ass, Dark Roast.” I’ve been trying out different coffee and this one and Lavazza are best. I actually think I like this better though because it really is FRESH. Just opening it was a beautiful smell. It did not smell rancid like other coffee beans or have a sour taste. I love how it has a deep dark slightly bitter (NOT sour or acidic) taste. Kind of like semi-sweet or dark chocolate. It left a “clean” feeling. If that makes any sense it’s like having a homemade cookie vs a processed cookie. One tastes good and makes you feel good after while the processed tastes good but after makes you feel sick. I have a sensitive stomach so this was AWESOME. It did not give me cramps or a headache! Definitely going to be my number one pick. 🙂 I ground 10g coffee beans in my Epica burr for 5 seconds to achieve a medium-coarse texture. I measured out 6oz. of fresh filtered water and placed it all together in my Moka Pot under medium heat. I like 50/50 of coffee and milk. So happy to find a coffee that met all my expectations. Dark, bold, not acidic/sour, doesn’t upset stomach, and is fresh and affordable! Woohoo!

10. Grizzly Claw Whole Bean Coffee

Like the other Kicking Horse products on this list, these beans are roasted in the Rocky Mountains and are rich in flavor. Grizzly Claw holds notes of dark chocolate, roasted hazelnut, and cacao nibs in every bean, and is certified organic! Like Kick Ass, this flavor pairs great with a french press, but hails pleasing results anyway you choose to brew.

Specifications:

  • Brand: Kicking Horse Coffee
  • Item Form: Whole Bean
  • Roast Level: Dark Roast
  • Flavor: Grizzly Claw – Dark Roast
  • Caffeine Content: Caffeinated
Pros
  • Great flavor
  • Widely accessible
Cons
  • Only sold in 10oz or 2.2 lbs

Sample Customer Review… Amazing coffee! I’ve purchased Death Wish, Valhalla Java, San Francisco Bay, Starbucks – all manner of whole bean coffees, and this was the absolute best. It is smooth, non-acidic, mellow, and yet somehow still kicks you in the backside and gets you going in the morning. I found I needed fewer beans for a couple of cups than I did with other coffees, so even though it’s a 10oz bag, I’d say it easily goes as far as a 12oz bag of most coffees, maybe even a little further. I have also had the decaf of this, and it is delicious as well. There’s a great aroma, a nice amount of oil, and it works great in a French Press. Treat yourself to some Grizzly Claw. It makes getting out of bed bearable. Bearable, Grizzly Claw – see what I did there?? 🙂

11. Kicking Horse Decaf Dark Roast Coffee

Unlike the other products on this list, here we have our top pick for a decaf option! Kicking Horse Decaf Dark Roast Coffee brings forth all of the rich flavors you would come to expect in a caffeinated coffee, but with none of the jittery alertness that comes with a fully caffeinated alternative! Complete with notes of dark chocolate and hazelnut, these beans are perfect for any individual who simply wants the aroma and taste of a delicious cup of coffee, without the commitment of caffeine.

Specifications:

  • Brand: Kicking Horse Coffee
  • Item Form: Whole Bean
  • Roast Level: Dark Roast
  • Flavor: Decaf – Dark Roast
  • Caffeine Content: Decaffeinated
Pros
  • Decaffeinated
  • Bold flavor
  • Organic
  • Fairtrade
Cons
  • Can have a burnt taste
  • Better for dark roast fans

Sample Customer Review… I recently switched from drinking mostly caffeinated to drinking mostly decaffeinated coffee. I wanted a coffee that was decaffeinated using the Swiss Water Process and not by using chemicals. I also love a dark roast but not a dark roast that tastes like it was burned as is the case with one national chain. Kicking Horse definitely filled the bill. This is a delicious coffee that is as good as any caffeinated coffee, minus the buzz. Highly recommend it if you like a dark roast. I bought two other decaf coffees at the same time. One was No Fun Jo which was definitely too light a roast for me. I found it bland. The other one was Stone Street. It was a fuller flavor with a definite earthy flavor. I’m still not sure how I feel about Stone Street. Definitely more flavorful than No Fun Jo but you have to like an earthy flavor to enjoy it. It still might grow on me.

12. No Fun Jo Decaf

If you are simply looking for a richly flavored coffee with little to no caffeine content, then we have yet another decaf option for you!  No Fun Jo Decaf uses the Swiss decaffeination process, which does not use methyl chloride like some other processes tend to. This coffee also holds notes of blueberry as well as milk chocolate and is highly regarded as both flavorful and smooth.

Specifications:

  • Brand: Jo Coffee
  • Item Form: Ground
  • Roast Level: Dark Roast
  • Flavor: Swiss Water Process Decaf
  • Caffeine Content: Decaffeinated
Pros
  • Flavorful
  • Uses Swiss decaffeination process
Cons
  • Some reports call the coffee watery

Sample Customer Review… I had never found a decaffeinated coffee that I liked. At this point, I just assumed that all de-caff tasted absolutely terrible. However, I am pregnant and didn’t want regular coffee and I greatly missed coffee. So I did what any American would do. I googled best-rated de-caffeinated coffees. This was number two on the list. I can’t imagine how blissful the first option must be, because this No Fun Jo is freaking AMAZING. I can’t tell you how good it is. It’s better than my usual coffee which is a whole bean coffee I buy and grind at home and the label says celestial male deer (or a shape with five points and alternative words for dollars). I’m not sure I will ever go back to my old coffee. I brewed a whole pot of this and drank a large cup. I put the rest in the fridge and heated it up the next day. Still delicious. Thank you No Fun Jo!

13. Intelligentsia House Blend

One of the sweeter options on our list, the Intelligentsia House Blend is rife with hints of milk chocolate, apple, and citrus, making your morning cup feel more like a desert! This coffee is also one of the few light roasts on our list, so if you aren’t a big fan of the bold dark roast taste, Intelligentsia is a crisp and sweet alternative.

Specifications:

  • Brand: Intelligentsia
  • Item Form: Roast & Ground
  • Roast Level: Light Roast
  • Flavor: House Blend
  • Caffeine Content: Caffeinated
Pros
  • Drinkable for non-coffee lovers
  • Great value
Cons
  • Rare find in-store
  • Beans can be stale

Sample Customer Review… Intelligentsia is delicious, a full-bodied blend that tastes great whether you like to make your coffee extra strong with a lot of grounds, or if you only like a little flavor. Tastes great either way. This bag is mainly used with a metal filtered pour-over thingy.

How to Know What are the Best Coffee Beans for You?

Ground vs Whole Bean

The difference between the two is quite obvious, one comes in the form of literal beans, the other comes pre-ground, but what are the benefits of buying one over the other? To put it simply, in many aspects, buying whole bean coffee is preferable to the pre-ground alternative, the main exception being convenience. When getting your coffee delivered or buying pre-packaged, whole beans have less of a chance of growing stale and taking on that sour after taste than their ground counterparts.

Whole beans also allow you to alter the flavor of your coffee in a way you aren’t capable of with pre-ground beans, if your coffee doesn’t taste up to snuff, you cannot simply change the grind size in order to improve the extraction that your brewer is getting, but with whole beans, you can!

Not only that, but being in control of the grinding process allows you to customize the size of your grounds based on your type of brewer, whether you want it ground for espresso, french press, pour-over, cold brew, or just an ordinary drip brewer, there is a specific way your coffee should be ground, and not all beans are guaranteed to come prepackaged in the grind size you require.

The experience of whole beans, of course, comes with the condition that you own a coffee grinder, or know someone who does, and this is not always the case, and in those circumstances pre-ground is still a viable option. For the true coffee enthusiasts, however, you know the choice you are making when buying whole beans or pre-ground, so choose wisely.

What’s Roast Got to Do With it?

The word gets thrown around a lot, light roast, dark roast, dare I say… medium roast, but what exactly does the level of roast tell you about your coffee beans? Well, to put it simply, light roast coffee holds a more delicate taste, a thinner body, but the bean itself is denser. When the beans are lightly roasted, they are not heated for as long, so less evaporation occurs, and you are left with denser beans that typically have a higher caffeine content.

Dark roast, on the other hand, are roasted for much longer, which makes the beans dryer and typically hold less complex of a flavor profile. Medium roast, surprisingly, is somewhere in the middle. While the majority of our list consists of dark roast beans, it is a testament to how strong their flavors are that they outmatch many of the lighter roast competitors!

Conclusion

Only you know what coffee you would like best, but in our humble opinion Death Wish Coffee is the way to go. Its caffeine content alone is enough to have us diving for our wallets, but the rich taste truly makes those beans an exceptional find! Even if Death Wish isn’t the best coffee beans for you, there are still plenty to choose from, and we hope that you will find your coffee soulmate while perusing the other options on our list!
