When it comes to practicing a sport or doing any sort of physical activity most like to listen to music while doing so. We have the best waterproof headphones for swimming. Swimmers should not be out of the equation just because they are in the water the whole time. There are still headphones there with high quality waterproof abilities so you don’t have to worry about ruining any good pair.
Top 9 of the Best Waterproof Headphones for Swimming
What happens if you have a waterproof MP3 player that doesn’t have a Bluetooth feature? For you folks we recommend Swimbuds. These in-ear earbuds are the gold standard when it comes to wired headphones in the pool, ocean, and type of water you encounter. They’re not exactly the most durable waterproof headphones on the market, but they’re extremely simple to set up and use and relatively inexpensive.
The reason the Swimbuds at the top is quite simple, they come in enough shapes to work for every swimmer’s different ear shape.
You’ve got the more classic shaped rounds, the tree-shaped headphone, and my go-to with headphones both in and out of the water, the fin tips, which help secure the plug within your ears and keep them from getting moved around when you push off or when you are moving along at a high rate of speed. The main problem with underwater music players isn’t usually the music quality, but being able to simply keep your earphones in place while swimming.
A poor earbud fit means it’s getting moved loose while you are swimming. It doesn’t take much wiggle for water to get in there and muffle the sound coming from the earphones at times despite the more secure fit compared to other headphones. Once you get a good fit with your ear, the headphones do the rest, turning up your favorite songs while you swim through the rest of your workout.

Sample Customer Review…I use these on a daily basis, with my waterproof iPod shuffle (also from Underwater Audio). The sound quality is better than I could have imagined possible for underwater headphones. The “tree” buds also act as earplugs, creating a secure and tight, but comfortable seal, so I no longer end up with a swimmer’s ear, or water sloshing around in my ears for the rest of the day post-swim. I follow the recommended procedure for inserting them of crossing my arm over my head to pull up on the opposite earlobe, and then placing the bud into the ear canal. I can’t speak highly enough about Underwater Audio’s customer service- they have been prompt, courteous, and responsive any time I have had reason to contact them. This is my second set of headphones from them, and I definitely recommend getting the optional extended warranty. I had one side/earbud stop working, and they replaced them quickly, no questions asked, no hassle. Having music to swim to has gone from a luxury to an essential!Read more reviews at Amazon.com
2. Hydroactive Waterproof Headphones
These types of headphones have a special wrap-around feature that allows the headphones to stay intact when swimmers pick up speed. These headphones also have a memory foam to best fit the shape of your head.
The added protection and heavy plastic casing allows for uninterrupted connection and maximum security. The headphones have a clear sound thanks to the multiple layers of protection.
There are also four different sets of earbuds that come with this set, allowing the user to use these while doing dryland activities. The versatility of these headphones is one of the many reasons that they are popular amongst customers.
- Brand: Underwater Audio
- Material: ABS Plastic
- Color: White
- IPX Rating: 8
Sample Customer Review…I’ve tried about 10 different headphones for swimming; all of them either leaked or were falling out. I guess my ear canals refused to follow the evolution theory of Darwin and remained primitive. But finally, I found something that even worked for me. I’ve been swimming with these for about 2 years. These headphones have a very nice snuggle and comfortable fit, they don’t leak or fall out after 45 mins swim in the endless pool (I haven’t tried them in a lap pool). The only peculiar thing is I found that if I wear them in the proper orientation (that is left channel to left ear) I couldn’t hear anything out of the left bud! However, when I reverse them and wear them “upside-down” with the right ear channel in the left ear, the sound is perfect and the buds still don’t fall out. The short cord doesn’t interfere with strokes or get tangled up.
These come with a myriad of different shapes and size buds, extension cord, and very nicely packaged.
Overall I’m extremely satisfied with these – I think the money is well spent.Read more reviews at Amazon.com
3. SoundWiz w18
The SoundWhiz W18 is on our list as one of the more affordable waterproof Bluetooth headphones. Keep in mind it isn’t the cheapest one on the list, but it’s still more economical than any other of the premium and more expensive headphones. Water protection is amazing with an IPX7 rating. It means that these headphones can endure underwater for a very long amount of time. However, it’s not suitable for swimming because the Bluetooth feature doesn’t work underwater. Durability is high quality, but it’s important that you handle it with care.
The fit is very comfortable for any lengthy activity as the ear hooks grip stable and steady. It comes with six pairs of silicone, foam and ear tips with 3 sizes as replacements in case they need to charge. The SoundWhiz W18 offers proper fit with good isolation and comfort. These headphones are equipped with Bluetooth 4.1 connectivity. This means that it offers at least a 30-feet range. The true range depends on how many objects are in between and in the way. The connection is recommendable since it hardly ever disconnects. This is important if you know how frustrating it can be to have constant disconnection while listening to your favorite songs.
The battery powers a standard 8 hours of continuous use. The headphone’s sound is excellent. It offers a well-modulated and well-balanced audio for any music genre. The sound signature is the bass which is quite soothing and light in deeper lows.
- Brand: Soundwhiz W18
- Material: Plastic
- Color: Black and Red
- IPX Rating: 7
Sample Customer Review…I have purchased several different types of sport wireless Bluetooth earbuds, and these actually work perfectly and feel great, (Once I switched to the soft memory foam adapter pieces from the plethora of accessories they gave me from which to choose! AWESOME!!) It’s the little things, like the details of the adjustable earpieces, that make for great products. People’s inner ear canals are as different as fingerprints, and the ability to tailor your fit with all the various pieces given makes them extremely comfortable. Then add to that the deep bass response, incredible highs, and lows, I’m jamming all the time now with zero fatigue to my ear. Great job guys… I’m extremely satisfied!!Read more reviews at Amazon.com
4. H2O Audio Stream 2
H20 offers a hydrodynamic design that is fit to better accommodate your ears. There are a number of headphones that have customizable ear tips, but H20’s proper alignment of the earbud allows for maximum flexibility.
H20 offers a more modern approach to usability, as it is compatible with Spotify. Fast-forward buttons and the ability to drag and drop music eliminates the need for an MP3 player. H20 audio stream has a swanky design to it. Customize your workout with these headphones!
- Brand: H20 Audio Stream
- Material: Plastic
- Color: Black and blue
- IPX Rating: 8
Sample Customer Review…Night and day. I was a user of H2Audio back in the day when you had to stuff your iPod into a zip lock bag-like pouch.
I had recently purchased half as an expensive no-name brand to save money and it was a nightmare. Even the replacement item was junk. I returned it, got my money back and bought this.
This device so far has been flawless. It worked instantly on my Mac. It has Bluetooth, which I have not tried. But within five minutes of getting this, I had it unpackaged, plugged into my Mac, and all the files transferred. No word of a lie. The junk I previously bought I struggled with for literally two weeks, with shipping delays, replacement, etc.
H2Audio is the leader. I can’t get my two weeks back but at least I now have a very reliable product.
Highly recommend!Read more reviews at Amazon.com
5. Sony NW-WS413LM
This pair is a popular selection for a variety of reasons. One of which is that you can use them in fresh and saltwater. Another reason is the inclusion of 7 pairs of ear tips. The many selections may seem overwhelming to some, but to most, it means the more the merrier. A safety feature known as the ambient selection allows the user to discern what is happening around them with a push of a button. A microphone plays back to what is happening to the user, to limit accidents.
You won’t run out of room for your music, as the headphones come with 4 GB of memory.
- Brand: Sony
- Material: N/A
- Color: Blue
- IBX rating: 7
Sample Customer Review…I’ve never found underwater headphones to work as well as this. I always expect swim headphones to be low quality, but honestly, these are pretty dang good. They come with different-sized earpieces so you can customize this to fit your ears. Take the time to read the directions- some of the earbuds it comes with aren’t for swimming. Aside from the music quality is surprisingly good, the other thing I love is how they stay in place while you swim. I’m used to a clunky thing that clips to your swim cap. These just sit in your ears and seriously don’t impede my swimming at all. They don’t fall off or come loose. I put them on first (before my goggles). Been using it every day for a few months and so far so good. The battery lasts about 6 hours I’d say between charges. Fairly easy to put music on it, but I haven’t been able to get podcasts or audiobooks to work.Read more reviews at Amazon.com
6. Finis Duo
Undoubtedly one the leading swimmer MP3 players on the market, the Duo waterproof headphones come from a company that’s famous for its high quality swimming accessories. They come in two colors, black/acid green and dark grey/mint. What’s unique about this music device is that it uses bone conduction technology to transmit sound underwater through your cheekbones. This saves you having to mess around putting headphones in your ears which can become frustrating when they easily come out while you’re swimming.
Large buttons are provided on one of the earbuds, including fast forward, rewind, play/pause, shuffle, and sound quality is remarkably loud and clear underwater. Keep a note that you can only use these in water, they do not work on land. Charging is through a USB-based dock that is magnetic, although you will need to clean the very small charging points on the device out regularly so they won’t stay clogged.
Now, these aren’t necessarily just headphones, the FINIS Duo is an all-in-one headphones and music player wrapped into one. The first thing you might be thinking when you look at it is where exactly are the headphones? And that’s exactly the point of this bad boy—with no headphones, no wires, and trying to figure out an earbud that fits your ear you can focus on the business of swimming laps in the water with quality sound.
There are a lot of perks to the “bud-less” set of headphones, and one of them is focused on swimmers who do lap quick laps while wanting to listen to some music. If you’re someone that has suffered from rampant ear infections due to the water, a problem you may experience is the lack of plugging in your wars. We will point out that listening to bone-conduction waterproof headphones like the FINIS Duo while wearing earplugs gives a much fuller sound.
- Brand: Finis
- Memory Storage: 4096 MB
- Color: Black/acid green
- IPX rating: 8
Sample Customer Review…swimming laps to music is wonderful. The sound is clear. Has doubled my swimming time as I lose myself in the music. It’s easy to download the music onto this player. Two things to know that are not in the enclosed instructions: 1. You are to charge the battery 24 hours before your first use. 2. Before putting on the player, turn it on until you see the green light. Then wait 10 seconds for the music to turn on. Initially, I would turn it on over and over and over as I never heard anything. I finally called Finis and was told there was a lag time of 10 seconds before the music would play. I suggested this be included in their directions. Now that I know how to operate this player, it’s fantastic.Read more reviews at Amazon.com
7. Plantronics Backbeat
People consider the Plantronics BackBeat as one of the best overall sports headphones that still have a focus. They make sure that the headphone is suitable for water activity mainly with the added ability for other sports. Snorkeling and cycling are some of the activities to consider while wearing them. These headphones move with you every time you reach for your beat. The headphone is flexible. It’s also sweat and waterproof. The BackBeat delivers amazing sound, but lets you hear your background while you work outside.
The BackBeat has reflective colors for safety when you’re out for a nighttime run. They’ve powered the headphones to give them about 8 hours of continuous sound. It’s the standard time with some Bluetooth headphones. However, other Bluetooth devices have less battery life than the Plantronics Backbeat. These offer good quality sound and realistic audio. It also has easy on-ear controls that let you manage your music and calls without distractions. The adjustable armband locks your smartphone while you’re on the go, making it easier to move around with instead of requiring it to be in a pocket.
They’ve built these headphones out of rubbery plastics that are durable and flexible for any type of strain during sports activities. The ear tips are excellent while keeping comfort for as long as you have them on. Wearing them for a lengthy period doesn’t annoy the ears, no matter what your ear size is. They’re well-balanced, pleasing to the ears, and comfortable for long hours of listening. The bass sound is the sound signature if you’re a bass-lover. Mids and highs are precise and detailed. People will most likely focus on clear vocals than the lack of sound tremble.

- Color: Black
- IP 57 (for withstanding fresh water up to one meter for 30 minutes.)
Sample Customer Review…I love these headphones. Not only have mine last multiple (5-7) times ran through washer and dryer. They are super durable to sweat and just being treated rough. I have carried them in my front pocket in my jacket through Splash Mountain (seated in the front) then put them on and used them the rest of the day at Disneyland. But while biking home through heavy rain in the PNW. The mic is great the sound quality for the small headphones is great and the range is not that bad either for the Bluetooth. I have told multiple coworkers about these and many have gotten multiple pairs for when they forget them or eventually lose them. I have worn them for 8hrs straight and had no pain from wearing them. Great battery life and lightweight.Read more at Amazon.com
8. Pyle Marine Sport
We’ll say this right away that these headphones are definitely not the best quality on this list. Although the idea of the over-the-ear clasp is promising, they aren’t exactly ideal for swimming. While the earbuds come with a variety of different tip sizes, the clasp isn’t adjustable, making securing the earbud more challenging to get a secure fit. Because of this, any time pushing off a wall with force can make these slide off your head.
Nothing more frustrating than having to stop constantly to strap them back onto your head. Additionally, the cord is 4 feet in length which is far too long for swimmers. This makes it more suitable for activities on dryland where sweaty that way the water resistance has some use, versus swimming. However, this type of headphone may work for some people, plus it’s also the cheapest option in this guide and that’s why it’s included in the list.

- Color: Black
- IPX Rating: 7
Sample Customer Review…These are Awesome! I had gotten a waterproof iPod a few weeks back, but the earbuds that came with it kept falling out of my ears. These seemed to get pretty good reviews so I purchased them on Amazon & received them in 1 week. Started using it for my lap swim workout & the sound quality is great! (far better than my previous earbuds). They sound like normal, full sound earphones (not weak ). I actually had to lower the volume since the sound was so powerful. And they really do stay in your ears (they come in 3 sizes, so you can test out which ones work for your ears). They even stay in my ears when my swim cap is off – so lap swimming has become so much more enjoyable. I highly recommend theseRead more reviews at Amazon.com
9. SWMIUSK Waterproof Headphones
With an IPX8 rating, these headphones are optimal for aquatic exercise. Customers have praised this item for its clear sound and impeccable tone. SWMIUSK offers a three-layer protection that is still compact and lightweight.
Its simple design is popular amongst users. For those on a budget, they can still have comfort with a flexible band.
- Brand: SWMIUSK
- Material: Silicone
- Color: Black
- IPX Rating: 8
Sample Customer Review…Ok, I’ve only used these one time so far but I’m impressed enough to feel a rating is in order. I honestly expected these to be complete junk, but they were very inexpensive and I needed a replacement set for my SYRYN mp3 player ASAP. The sound is surprisingly decent. The fit is excellent ( there are many plug options supplied). The water and steam room performance were better (by far) than the original set that came with my SYRYN. This was quite a surprise, frankly and I felt it was worth sharing. The key will be How well these hold up over time. My originals only lasted 4 months of light use before they developed a short. The cabling on this unit looks a little flimsy but I had no problems so I’ll just need to take a little care with it and if they hold up GREAT. They were incredibly cheap and sound decent and performed well under swimming and steam room conditions.Read more reviews at Amazon.com
Buying Guide: Things to Consider When Buying Waterproof Bluetooth Headphones for Swimming
One of the most popular ways to get through a workout is through music. Swimming practice can especially get a little dull after a couple of laps and reduce physical performance. Waterproof headphones help immensely with keeping a workout exciting. Below you will find a buying guide designed to help you find your perfect fit!
One of the most important things to keep in consideration when shopping for waterproof headphones is the IPX rating. If you’re submerged underwater for a majority of the time, it is recommended that you get headphones with an IPX rating of 8. IPX ratings of 7 are for areas that are 1m/3ft of water for up to 30 minutes. Vendors that don’t share this information or seem suspicious about this information should be avoided entirely.
Wired vs Wireless Headphones
Deciding between wired and wireless headphones depends entirely on if the swimmer is just swimming laps, or goes underwater. As of right now, there are no wireless headphones that have the ability to work while underwater. If this is the case, then wired would be the best option, as they have the ability to work well without losing signal underwater.
There are many different styles of earbuds to choose from. It’s important to find the right size so that the earbuds don’t fall out whilst one is working out, and for maximum comfort. It helps to try on different sizes along with swim caps to see which size works for you.
Both the plastic housings and sleeker, stainless steel headphones can withstand the pressure of water at three feet. However, some offer gold-plated coverings to assist in providing extra protection against these depths. Some wired models provide thicker wire insulation for extra safety as well.
Whether you are looking for top quality or simply something to put in your ears while swimming, the best waterproof headphones for swimming are on this list. Even a bud-less option so you can swim with ease. Of course, budget is a big factor and some of these options are expensive as the quality goes up. Whatever your factors are, swimming with music is 100 percent an option with these waterproof options.
