The Gen7Pets Natural Step Dog Ramp measures 72 inches in length, 16 inches wide, and 1.5 inches in height. The Gen7 dog ramp is designed with a poly grass surface that is soft on your dog’s paws but still provides the safety of a non-slip surface.

Sample Customer Review…Very Happy with the dog ramp. My senior labrador retriever adjusted to it quickly. Other stairs/ramps she has been skittish about because she doesn’t feel steady on their smoother surfaces. The ramps ‘astroturf’ gives her feet some traction and makes her feel safe. I have a mid-size, SUV, a Toyota FJ Crusier.

The incline is not too sharp and the lip fits well along the back door of my vehicle. The ramp is easy to use. It has a clip that automatically locks in place when you fold the ramp together. Just unfold/fold the ramp slowly to avoid a finger getting caught. Ramp is made of a hard thick plastic. Handle makes it easy to transfer the ramp. I’m glad I spent the extra money, it was worth it.

Sample Customer Review…This was a great purchase. There was no assembly require save for unfolding the ramp. The ramp was high enough for my very high bed. This ramp has eased my mind considerably as my dog used to just fling himself from the height of the (tall) bed and I was concerned the he would injure himself. He also no longer has to beg to be put up he can do it by himself even when we are not at home.

My dachshund took to the change almost immediately with very little hesitation. The ramp is carpeted giving very good traction both up and down (even at his speed which seems to be a dead run at all times except when he thinks he is in trouble). the shipping was speedy and the box it was packaged in was sturdy and recyclable. So all in all a five stat experience with this seller.

6. Pet Studio Pine Frame Dog Ramp

[amazon box=”B004IN9NAS” description=” ” rating=”4.6″]

The Pet Studio Pine Frame Dog RampSteps offers a three-step ladder that can be converted into a ramp to get the best of both worlds. The ramp measures out to be 40 inches in length, 17.5 inches wide, and 19.5 inches in height. Each of the three steps measures 12 inches in depth and 16 inches wide, covered in a carpeted, non-slip surface. Rated for a weight capacity of 130 pounds, and weighs approximately 18 pounds.

Sample Customer Review…We first bought these steps several years ago to allow aging dogs access to the bed or sofa. We’ve got several of the steps at different places in the house. While we usually leave them in place, it’s great that they can be easily folded and stored under many beds or in a closet. The low pile carpet on the steps gives the dogs traction and helps prevent slipping. While the step platforms can be folded to create more of a ramp instead of steps, the incline is pretty steep.

We found the steps worked best for our dogs. After our older dogs passed, we kept the steps for our new pups. Since jumping from high beds can put a lot of stress on a dog’s joints which can later lead to the issues our older dogs experienced, we wanted to encourage the younger ones to use the steps to avoid later problems.

They must like it since they usually use the steps even though they can jump up and down. We’ve had these steps for years now and they’ve held up very well overall. Highly recommend especially for smaller or aging pets as well as those that have had surgery.

7. PetSTEP Original Folding Pet Ramp

[amazon box=”B00006OALW” description=” ” rating=”4.4″]

PetSTEP Original Folding Pet Ramp measures out to be 70 inches in length, 17 inches wide, and 2.5 inches in height. This ramp has a unique rubber surface that allows for traction in both wet and dry weather conditions. The ramp has a large weight capacity of 500 lbs and weighs just over 18 pounds. The PetSTEP ramp includes handles on both ends and folds together to make it easy to store and travel with.

Sample Customer Review…This is the first review I’ve ever written and felt that I absolutely needed to let people know how incredible this product is. Our 13-year-old Chihuahua could no longer use steps and was having to sleep on the floor instead of on our bed while we are gone to work.

We thought we would give this a try out of desperation. She would often wake us up several times during the night to get down off the bed and now after practicing with some treats for about 20 minutes she now goes up and down the ramp on her own in the middle of the night and while we are gone and is much happier. It is a quality product with cushioned rubberized tracking so there is no slipping or injury to her paws. It hooks over the edge of the bed securely without being in the way of our feet.

If she were larger we would also be able to use this for the car but don’t need to. It folds well and is lightweight but extremely sturdy. There are two short rails on either side that provides security in her not falling off. She is a very timid dog and would not use other soft steps etc. so we thought we would give this a try and it has literally changed our lives for the better.

I’m telling all of my friends about this and you should definitely give it a try. Compared to other expensive steps that we have tried and sent back that are not versatile like this is, this is a great buy.

Sample Customer Review…I needed a ramp to be able to get my Golden Retriever in and out of my car when I take her to work with me. I used to lift her in and out, but I had back surgery and wasn’t allowed to lift more than 10 lbs for a while. This is very durable, relatively lightweight, and easy to set up. It was very easy to train my dog to climb up and down the ramp. When you are done with it, it telescopes down to a manageable length which you can store easily, like in the back of your car. Was very pleased with this ramp.

Buying Guide for the Best Portable Dog Ramps

When buying a ramp, there are many factors that need to be considered to make sure that your purchase fits the needs and lifestyle of you and your pet. Some of these factors include:

Weight of the Ramp

If you plan on keeping your ramp in a permanent location such as by the bed or couch, the weight of the ramp may not be as important. However, if you plan on using the ramp frequently or even daily, to get your dog in and out of the vehicle, you may want to consider a lighter weight design. Ramps typically start around 10 pounds for lightweight designs, with heavier ramps weighing roughly 25-30 pounds.

Ramp Size

It is a good idea to double-check the measurements to make sure that the ramp you purchase is a good fit for your vehicle height or other platforms where it is needed. Some ramps are more suitable for higher platforms (such as full-size trucks or SUVs) while others may be more universal in use.

In addition, depending on the design each ramp’s measurement will be different from when they are fully extended versus when they are retracted. In any case, you want to make sure your ramp can easily fit in its intended place, as well as under the bed or in your vehicle before making your purchase.

Weight Capacity of the Ramp

Each ramp comes with a different weight capacity that it is rated for. This ranges anywhere from 150 lbs to even 800 lbs. Double-check to make sure your ramp is rated for the appropriate weight needed for your pet.

Surface Material

Most ramps are designed with a non-slip surface to help create traction and prevent falls and injuries. However, the material used to accomplish this in each ramp varies greatly. Some ramps have a surface that is similar to rough sandpaper, while others have a more rubbery texture. If your dog has sensitive paws, it may be a good idea to purchase a ramp with a softer surface texture to ensure they don’t become injured.

Steepness or Length of the Ramp

There is no one-size-fits length of the ramp that will suit everyone’s needs. The length of the ramp required will depend on how it will be angled, such as the height of your vehicle, or other platforms you plan to prop it on. To give you some guidance on how steep you want your ramp, some recommendations may be having an angle of 18-20 degrees for smaller dogs and having an angle of 22-25 degrees for medium and large dogs. In addition, it is recommended to have a ramp that is 15 inches wide for small dogs, and 24 inches wide for medium to large dogs.

Conclusion

There are a lot of options out there when considering the best portable dog ramps, but hopefully, this article helped you sort through the pros and cons of each style to help you find the perfect fit for your pet.
